Richard Kelly (the writer/director of Donnie Darko) finally has enough money to finish Southland Tales. An early cut of the movie premiered at Cannes 2006, but negative reviews and unfinished visual effects made it disappear for a while. But Kelly himself is now saying it will be done by midsummer. Who cares? Well, fans of Sarah Michelle Gellar, for starters:
Southland Tales tells several intertwining, um, tales of the near future. Here’s the IMDb plot summary:
Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) is an action star who’s stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
Intriguing, if totally unclear. As Buffy might say, “I think I speak for everyone here when I say, ‘huh?’”
