One of the key tenets of the AfterEllen.com Book Club—and one that I personally believe makes us a bit cooler than other book clubs—is the idea of choice. But I hope you’ll all allow me one month where I don’t give you a list of books to vote on. Because Malinda Lo’s Inheritance came out this week, and I have been anxiously awaiting being able to discuss it with you people!
Inheritance is the sequel to Lo’s sci-fi thriller Adaptation. You can read a review of Adaptation I wrote last year, or for the more ADD among us, watch the book trailer. Adaptation introduced the world of YA to science fiction with a diverse cast, from the bisexual protagonist Reese Holloway to one of her love interests, David Li.
If you haven’t read either of them, I can promise you that both are fast-paced reads that you will tear through in a matter of days. For good chunks of Inheritance, I felt there was slightly less action than Adaptation, but that’s just so Lo can really delve into and explain some of the complex intricacies of the world that we were first presented with in Adaptation, and it’s a lot of these themes and ideas that I found most fascinating in the whole series. And even then, the underlying tension and suspense of the novel never ceases, and your heart rate will definitely increase for the big finale, which includes something I’m not sure I’ve ever seen in YA before. I cannot wait to talk about this ending!
I’m also excited to announce that Malinda Lo would love to answer any questions we have for her and to participate in the discussion at the end of the month, because she is awesome. So after you’ve finished the series, you can shoot your questions for Malinda to me in a variety of ways: include it on the Inheritance discussion on Goodreads, drop it in the Ask box on our Tumblr (the question mark at the top right of the screen), tweet me @daffodilly, or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I’ll tweet out a last call for questions in October when I’m starting to gather them together. We’ll then post Malinda’s answers here on the site.
And if you can’t get enough of Reese’s other love interest, Amber—and who can!—you can also check out the e-novella Natural Selection, told from Amber’s point of view, currently on Kindle for just $1.99.
See you back here in a few weeks for some real talk about birds and aliens—among other things.
