Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (November 30, 2007)LESBIAN QUOTE OF WEEK NO. 2 — Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) to Frank (Judah Friedlander) on this week's episode of 30 Rock ("Cougars") IF YOU TURN ON THE TELEVISION AND NEVER SEE A LESBIAN, DO WE REALLY EXIST? Some of the AfterEllen.com video bloggers joined together to make these PSAs. The first takes an angry-lesbian approach, the second a smartass one (and is partly just for our own amusement). But don't be scared off by the scowling lesbians — you really need to watch the first PSA to appreciate the second one. Lesbians on TV PSA No. 1Lesbians on TV PSA No. 2Please embed these on your MySpace profile or blog, and send them to everyone you know, especially any writers in your lives. We want to spread the word that we need more lesbian visibility on television. Otherwise you'll be stuck with nothing but us for your "entertainment." BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! A survey taken after German TV journalist and national celebrity Anne Will came out last week showed that this revelation actually improved her image among Germans. Logo has announced the premiere of its new reality program, Gimme Sugar, in which "five hot young friends on the L.A. lesbian club scene bite off more than they can chew when they try to launch and promote their own club night." The show will air next summer in six half-hour episodes. The press release promises that "the girls will fight, fall in love, break apart, and come back together as they struggle to make their dream come true." Logo's VisibleVote08.com video blog has returned, this time with a new brand new name, The Gay Agenda! Tune in this week to watch vloggers John Polly and Jennifer Vanasco talk about what's really up with Trent Lott, why underage kids can vote in Iowa, and who they like this week in Candidate Watch. Ellen DeGeneres will receive the Trevor Life Award on Dec. 2 at the The Trevor Project's 10th annual Cracked Christmas event in Los Angeles. The Award honors "an individual who, through his or her example, volunteerism and/or occupation, is an inspiration to gay and questioning youth." Jodie Foster will receive the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter's 16th Women in Entertainment Power 100 Breakfast on Dec. 4 in Los Angeles. The Award recognizes "women who have been pioneers or leaders in their field in the entertainment industry," and past recipients have included Meryl Streep and Barbara Walters. (Thanks to AE reader dairy queen for both the DeGeneres and Foster award tips!) The New York Post says Tila's not really bisexual. Finally, Sarah and Lori's video blog She Made Me Watch This: Favorite Lesbian TV Moments, Part 2 will be posted on Monday instead of today. Don't complain, because the angry, finger-drumming, eyebrow-raising lesbian from our PSAs can hear you! |

Great PSAs, although the
Great PSAs, although the second one is kinda counter productive.
It's notable that Velasquez is Venezuelan, which means she's a Latina playing — gasp! — a Latina on The L Word! Alert the media! Oh, wait a minute...The apocalypse is upon us RUN!!!!
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
PSAs on YouTube
I think the second PSA is more for AfterEllen.com readers, and the first one is more for straight people. That's my take on it, anyway.
Someone already uploaded them to youtube - everyone go watch them there, too, so they'll get lots of views (and star ratings) and then straight people will stumble across them when they search on there (since there are a lot of videos about the writers strike).
PSA #1
PSA #2
It's all about infiltration! :)
Haha!
"If you should see her...tell her I miss her still." -- Galinda. 'Wicked'

Those PSAs were hilarious. ANd I agree with the first poster the second one doesn't really help much. Also the raised eyebrows the scowl and tapping fingers ... YUM!
"I don't kiss girls who wear doilies"
Patricia is my crush.
Patricia is my crush.
Jill in the PSA scared me! Angry isn't sexy, it's scary! I wouldn't want to piss her off. Dara looked mighty cute:)
Tina continues to rock my world.
"angry" for a cause IS sexy.
YES
Gossip girl and PSAs
Gossip girl: Why didn't my high school experience look like that?
PSAs: They're good. The first one scared me a little, the second one was very funny. Nice.
PSAs
Although I dont live in the US I am aware of the situation...mainly thanks to this website! I think the 2nd is a more amusing one but should probably just be used for our own amusement...the 1st however i think is very good at getting the point across!
You guys really do make me laugh and have cheered me up today even though i am ill in bed!

Listen... Sarah hair did look better on Studio 60... and it does seem to be getting shorter and shorter, i a random way... but come on she's is sooooo gorgeous! Her face is adorable and she's intelligent and a wonderful, sexy actress. OK so she's so my new crush of the moment, but still... leave her alone! LOL

Yeah, PV is openly bisexual, isn't she?
Its beautiful
Lesbian visibility
Um did I blink? Where are the LESBIANS of COLOR?!
If AfterEllen wants me to support this cause then I want to see someone who represents me. WTF! It's like no matter how many times they get this complaint they are too arrogant to do anything about it. It's ALWAYS VANILLA, VANILLA, VANILLA. What about the vloggers from Upeople? What you couldn't contact them to be a part of your self aggranding?
PSAs and diversity
Two of the five women in the PSAs are women of color — one is Chinese-American and the other is Japanese American and Alaskan Native — so what you really mean is there are no black or Latina women represented, not that there are no women of color.
That is true. For a variety of reasons, we could only use vlogs done by AfterEllen.com staff for this PSA, and unfortunately we have a very small staff. Malinda and Sarah P were asked to participate but were not able to.
We take racial diversity very seriously on AfterEllen.com, and that's why we deliberately and consciously seek out women of color to profile and interview, and to blog and vlog for us, and we have done so consistently for the last five years. You'll note that "African American", "Latina" and "Women of Color" are three of the most popular tags in the tag cloud on the homepage (which means there are more articles and blog posts that fall into those categories than almost any other); that's not by accident.
I'm sorry we couldn't include anyone else in our PSAs; I agree that it would it have been better to include some Latina and black women, but we did the best we could given our constraints with this project. We'll continue to try and be as diverse as possible in everything we do.
On that note, let me take this opportunity to make a pitch: if you or anyone else reading this knows of black and Latina women who would like to write, vlog or blog for us an ongoing basis, please encourage them to contact me (for the vlogs), Malinda (for general writing), or Scribe Grrrl (for the blog) through private message or email. Thanks.
:-D
Actually
I'd like to point out that both Dara and Lori are women of color.
But rest assured, lezxotic, we do hear you, and we make every effort to include women of color in our coverage every day of the week. I like to see myself represented, too.
Thanks to AE
I think you all do a great job of including diversity as well as posting issues that are happening internationally.
well done
brilliant
Brilliant PSA's..
Lovely subtle hints to vote for Jill and We're Getting Nowhere aswell ;)
Ahhh. Gossip Girl.
Loving Gossip Girl atm ;)
yay something interesting is gonna happen on Gossp Girl!
I'm spreading the PSA's round my friends on facebook/myspace
"It's not pretty"... *Shows clip of Jill with blowdryer* "well sometimes it is"
Perfect!
R.I.P. Jane Rule

I am so sad. The world has lost a wonderful writer.

Blair and Serena on GG
Yeah, it's true about the BFF's... finally. it's not just subtext, lol. Geez, talk about oozing chemistry!!
In the book series, they do "hook up" a few times, Dan's character questions his sexuality, and Chuck is deeply closeted, despite the womanizing. Lots of queer themes to go around :) Interesting to see if the show follows at all in staying true to the books!
GG
i really hope they follow the books.. it would moke GG much more exciting.. but truthfully i doubt it.. because as they say these TV people never give is what we want..

GOD made men then He had a better idea girls.Tila Tequila
Okay so she's not "a" bisexual! Big deal! But can we all agree that she is indeed an equal opportunity whore! AND I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT!

AE's PSAs
OMG! EXCELLENT PSAs!
great PSAs
I guess I'll have to actually log into my myspace (for once) to put them on my page... ah well, it's for a good cause
omg, inbd
was there sound with these psa's??
Nope
There was no sound. It was a referense to the SAG PSAs for the writer strike, where actors didn't say anything, because there were no writers to write their scripts.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
PSA #2 has sound
Brilliant.
Thank you Karman for another wonderful Best.Lesbian.Week.Ever.
Oh and for the record, Jodie Foster is also accepting an award at the Cracked Xmas. Well, it's not for her, but for the late Randy Stone (who I love). She is accepting it on his behalf.
And, in addition to presenting The Trevor Founders Award, she appears in a short film that is a tribute to Mr. Stone, which will be shown at the event as part of her presentation.
"I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to present the first Trevor Founders Award to Peggy and James in memory of my dearest friend, Randy," said Ms. Foster. "Their inspired decision to establish this vital organization and their ongoing commitment to saving young lives are indeed worthy of recognition. The very fact that, after ten years, Trevor continues to pursue its mission so successfully is a testament not only to the founders' initial vision, but also to the importance of the organization's efforts to help desperate young people realize that their lives have value."
I cannot wait to hear and see what her role in the short film is like... Let's just say I have some high hopes concerning it.
Loved the PSAs. Sarah, you're a genius and you have the greatest staff in the world working for you ;) Thanks for absolutely everything, ladies.
Good stuff!
And the Patricia Cornwell article, thanks so much for posting. I've been a bad fan these last few years and haven't paid much attention to her - I just couldn't deal with the 1st-to-3rd person narrative shift - but it was wonderful to hear her speak so openly about her life and opinions.
And that Tina quote just rocks! Yay!
But the PSAs rock even more!! Off to post them on my blog right now. Although as someone said, with you all being so awesome, and all, that particular threat is kinda empty...
R.I.P. Jane Rule. Thanks you for your great books!
psa week
seeing Sarah paulson anywhere anytime is a good time..and its the correct message to send out there...that maybe if women did vote more so...we can finally change something in this country....plus afterellen making there own psa's about how lesbian's in general are almost none existent on television.
Awesome BLWE blog, Karman!
Awesome BLWE blog, Karman!
And the PSA (the scary one) is up on my MySpace :-)
Strike a pose....
Karman
If a writer's strike would mean more of your great vlogs, I say let it ride!
Great PSA's. Oooo Jill looks so surly! Those eyebrows were intense!
Interesting promos for the L Word. Looking forward to the show and the recaps here.
Thanks again for great info, great writing and great humor!
lesbians beating people up with chain wallets? priceless
This update rocked Karman!
To the staff at afterellen.com, thank you so much for the PSAs. The first one actually touched me as much as the announcements they were based on, and the second one made me jump for joy.
Y'all are great entertainment, and while it'd be nice to see more L[G]BTQI[A, because allies are good, too! Remember Peyton on One Tree Hill?] people on network tv and cable, I can't help but be happy that we still have you guys to entertain us when the going gets tough.
Perhaps the free toaster initiation should be changed to free chain wallet? ::shrug::
Also, loved the lesbian quotes of the week. Go Hayden! And Liz Lemon/Tina Fey always make life a little funnier.
Thanks again!
will lend wallet
