Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (November 2, 2007)BECAUSE THERE'S MORE TO LESBIAN RELATIONSHIPS THAN A U-HAUL If you've never read Lip & Dip's advice, be forewarned: It is not for the faint of heart! As they write in the book's Prologue about their style, "OK, there's a lot more crass honesty than tenderness, but we do our best to soften the blows." Written as a dialogue between Lipstick (Gina Daggett), a self-described femme, and Dipstick (Kathy Belge), a longstanding butch (no, they are not together), the book covers everything from when to move in together and how to deal with infidelity to how to keep the love alive decades from now. Along the way, you get a heaping dose of Lip and Dip's snarky-but-loving commentary. For example, here's a sample from "Lipstick's Top Ten Signs It's Not Going to Work":
Frighteningly realistic, eh? If that's not enough to convince you to give Lip & Dip a try, OK, yeah, they thanked Malinda in the Acknowledgements. Yes, Malinda likes Gina and Kathy! There, now go get your own copy. SUBTLE TITLE, LADIES! Me gusto! Visit the show's official site for more. PHENOMENAL WOMYN Here are some clips: The director and producer, Tiona M., found inspiration in her own experiences and those of her friends. The film, she told us, covers a wide variety of topics, "from coming out, sexuality and religion, on down to discrimination and homophobia." Postproduction on the documentary is about to wrap up, and Tiona hopes to submit the film to festivals in 2008. A DVD release is planned for next year as well. For more info, visit Tiona's MySpace page or the film's official blog. FROM PINING TO GIGGLING IN A FEW STROKES OF A PEN If that's what serves as a thank-you gift at Moore's house, I'm totally going trick-or-treating there next year. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! The first season of Logo's original series The Big Gay Sketch Show will be released on DVD Nov. 7. The DVD version is unrated, so maybe little Fitzwilliam will finally get that big vagina he's been longing for! A new interactive web series called How Do I Say This? I'm Gay has launched on mtvU, MTV's site for college students. The How Do I Say This? project turns questions and contributions from website users into weekly videos. The new series was inspired by an email from a college student asking for advice on coming out to her family. Check it out here. Voting for the 2007 Weblog Awards starts today, and there are three lesbian-run blogs nominated in the LGBT category. Go vote for them now! Don't forget to watch the first lesbian couple to attempt The Amazing Race when the 12th season of the CBS reality series debuts this Sunday! That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. |

Though straight folks seem to have an unending supply of dating manuals and relationship guides, queer women have had fewer options (and most of them are sex guides, which, though quite useful and necessary, don't tell you how to deal with your partner's spendthrift ways). Here to fill that void are Curve advice columnists

Missy Higgins
She always makes me think of the in vs. out debate, the public vs. private debate.
Labelling is always a tough one, and different things have different meanings for different people. While I love the label 'queer', others find it offensive or non-specific.
And the verdict on Missy? Well, she's a great musician and seems like a nice person!
Grey's
Oh! I totally picked up a vibe between Cristina and Dr. Hahn!! Espeically at the end of last weeks episode. I'm going to be a wishful thinker and hope that Dr. Hahn will be the lesbian cardio surgon that I can only dream of. Like I said though, wishful thinking.
Part of me wishes I was back in Calgary to check out A [Soh-Schul] Art. Seems like they'd be cool to check out.
Anyway, great B.L.W.E. Great job Scribe, and great vids too this week!
*swoons*
I've been addicted to "Where I stood" for over a month now.
I heard the song playing in the background during the last 5 minutes of Smallville. It's very rare for me to hear a song on a show and have it stay with me for days. Finding out that Missy might be more sexually open than thought is like adding extra yummy icing to an already awesome cake. Her lyrics are brilliant. *sighs* I wuv her.
Wow. You would've thought it was sweeps week with all this girl on girl flirtation happening. I think Grey's Anatomy is the best show right now to pull an authentic lesbian relationship on network t.v. lol I could be wrong but here's to hoping.
Great job Scribegrrrl!
Thanks!
As usual, great job scribegrrrl! Funny stuff!!!

Blog Awards
Gaaaah!!
If You Liked That One...
You'll love this:
Um, yeah...there's a few more pictures and a behind the scenes video of her in GQ's feature: Sarah Shahi's Back to Boys. I'll forgive the feature's title because the pictures are so hot.
But yeah...I love Brooke Smith on Grey's, though I miss her exchanges with Nancy Botwin/Mary-Louise Parker on Weeds. The tension between Christina and Dr. Hahn continues to build and, the way I figure it, it'll have to boil over into a huge cat-fight or hot, steamy sex.
Sarah Paulson might keep me watching Desperate Housewives for a little while longer. Dana Delaney's managed to sustain me through a few episodes of the new season, but even that's starting to wane.
I've been keeping up with the blog for black.womyn.:conversations for a while now...I'm anxious for it's release. Ahh, more Staceyann Chin!
Next year, we need some notice for the weblog awards, so we can submit AE for consideration. It definitely deserves to be recognized!
Eliza Dushku
My Goodness... Just hearing her say that has totally completely made my day. I knew there was a reason I got up in the mornings.

I first read about her music on this site and am glad I did. I bought "The Sound of White" and love it. Some of her songs just cut right through you.

Missy Higgins sings "Had me a girl"
Check out this YouTube clip of Missy Higgins and Ben Lee (another Aussie singer/songwriter) singing the Tom Waits song "Had me a girl". Apparently they decided to sing it about an hour before the show, so its a bit ad hoc but pretty funny. Great whistling by Missy in the "instrumental" section too!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XezX3bsKNdY
She is an awesome talent, I hear about her thru some Aussie mates a few years back and they send her latest stuff right over to me in the UK. Can't wait for her to tour here again.
Thanks you for sharing that!
Oh wow! Missy! What can I say... way to fufill a girls fantasy... Love it and love that she kinda "came out" without doing so or indeed needing to do so. I think she's said enough really :-)
The important thing is her awesome musical talent, clearly on display here on this YouTube clip.
Oh Missy Higgins...*swoon*
I sooo love Missy Higgins Music. I bought "on a clear night" cd months ago and fell in love with EVERY song...its not often an album does that. And to top it all off She will be here in my town on the 25th of november for a gig i cant WAIT!
And sidenote speaking of missy i was at well..karaoke last night and sang one of her songs and let me say most the people singing along and cheering were lesbians! Wha Hooo! hehe
On the flip side
It set us back a few years?
It set us back a few years? Really? I'm interested in hearing what people thought of the recent CI episode. I see where you're coming from but straight people play con artists and murderers on TV all the time, so why not lesbians too? It'd be nice to see continuing development in both positive AND negative characters/plots, especially if the storyline isn't just superficial (e.g. girls making out for sweeps week or Tila Tequila).
Having said that, Law and Order can be frustrating because it's a show with a large lesbian following that hasn't been all that nice/receptive to lesbians over the years. It'd be nice to see an out detective here or a little flirtation there now and then.
That's just my two cents though... let's make a dollar.
Thanks for the scoop!
This B.L.W.E. is one of the best so far. I gotta get Lipstic and Dipstick's relationship guidebook. I've been reading thir advice for years. I'm soooooo glad lesbian advice columinsts finally have something out there for us. Cheers!
Can't wait for black. womyn.: conversations come out. Even if it means I have to drive to another city t see the docu. I'm gonna se it.
Cool a vlog award show. Technology is revolutionizing how we see the world and connect with each other by a stroke of a key. Fabulous!*melting here!!*
AllI have to say is:
SARAH SHAHI WILL YOU MARRY ME??
get in line honey;)
My Fair Lady
Prepare for random comment, ready?
"JUST YOU WAIT, MISSY HIGGINS, JUST YOU WAIT ... " I'm loving the My Fair Lady reference (assuming it's intentional) and now I'm singing along. Yes I have the soundtrack and yes I am currently listening to it, ah Julie Andrews/Audrey Hepburn :)
Wonderful blog!!!
The Eliza soundbite will definitely be used in a FUFFY vid soon... I'm sure!!!! :)
oh, yes, it was intentional
Audrey Hepburn
Audrey movie references are rarely missed by me. I do love Audrey Hepburn.
I absolutely love the manamana avatar! It immediately pops the 'song' into my head. Do do dododo!
I've seen missy higgins live
I've seen missy higgins live a few times and she's just incredible. It amazes me that she's not on every movie and tv show soundtrack out there...but Smallville? ack. It's like when Private Practice featured Matt Nathanson this week. But I'm glad people in America are actually paying attention to her, though I wish it would've come during The Sound of White, which is my absolute favorite album of all time. I can think of a thousand scenes to drop in "Don't Ever".
“In a letter to Dear Abby a reader complained that a gay couple was moving in across the street and wanted to know what he could do to improve the quality of the neighborhood. Her suggestion - 'You could move.'”
you make me feel.
loved the jimmy somerville reference :) i used to dance to that song when i was little *yoou make me feel miiiighty real*.. haha enough reminiscing
full of awesome subtleties scribegrrrl!
p.s. go sheryl swoopes for coming out in an environment clearly not conducive to doing so... i mean come on there's got to be more girl lovin WNBA players than just her..
Lesbians in the WNBA
I suspect the WNBA is a little gayer than Swoopes says. Sue Wicks had a great quote in The Village Voice in 2000 -- when she was the only player talking to the press about lesbians.
"I can't say how many players are gay," notes Wicks, "but it would be easier to count the straight ones."

Missy Higgins *sigh*
I just knew it!! Not that she actually says that much, but I've been sure since the beginning that she isn't completely straight:p I love her music soooo much, what a talented lady.
Really great B.L.W.E!

What a week for Eliza Dushku
What a week for Eliza Dushku news!! I am buzzing!!
Also, I always thought Alexis Dziena looked so much like Eliza, it's really weird to see them in a film together, and presumably making out! It's all good!!

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for that picture of Francine and Katchoo!!!! Totally made my day!! Note to everyone who is not reading/has not read Strangers in Paradise - do it! It is brilliant.

That is so cool!!
Kristen Chenoweth...
When it was rumored that Kristen Chenoweth was going to star in a proposed movie playing Dusty Springfield, I had a hard time seeing her pulling that off. Since I've been watching her in Pushing Daisies, I realize that she would be brilliant in the part. I finally got to hear her sing on PD and even though if a movie ever got made about Dusty Springfield (not looking good) I would much prefer someone lip-sinc Dusty's unique voice, at least Kristen has got the pipes to do it herself.
And now to find out that Pushing Daisies originally wanted to make Olive a Lesbian! Ha! I noticed the great chemistry between her and Chuck (Charlotte) in last weeks episode. I love the show for many reasons, but I find myself watching it more for Kristen just a bit.
Strangers in Paradise
Thank you for mentioning Terry Moore's awesome graphic novel, and posting the pic. And to all the fans: visit http://sipfans.com/community/index.php

...agreed...
Swoon! She has the best chin – it's such a gay chin. I love it.
...oh, and voice too :]
haha! i don't really know anything about her so...

Dang! It's a good song.
Interesting Missy trivia - her grandfather was Prime Minister of Australia. (Can you see either of the Bush twins being this cool??)
Love Pussy xx
Missy's (not-gay) grandfather...
Any resemblance!!?
Love Pussy xx
Wow, sometimes I forget for
Hilarious
Girl looks for girl is hilarious. It's great and funny!
Whoa...
The Sarah Shahi photo blew my mind...Wow!
Next...
shahi ... cruz ... weisz
I'm sure the entirety of this blog was terrific, but I'm so hung up on the idea of Sarah Shahi and Penelope Cruz or Rachel Weisz that everything after that is incomprehensible to me.
Missy Higgins
Sandra and Brooke together?
Sandra and Brooke together? Awesome. And as for the people at Maxim, they clearly need to go and get their eyes tested. Idiots. Not only is she sexy, but she is also super smart! Which surely adds to the sexiness?
Did you hear what I heard? Did she say, "I have always wanted a woman"? I feel like I've just watched a Buffy fan video, and I think I know what the next line should be: As Faith once said, "Want. Take. Have."
Man, I wish Eliza Dushku would just hurry up and come out already. The quicker that she does this, the quicker I can get in there. I think that we may see her programmed to be a lesbian in “Dollhouse” if not, we can at least rely on the amount of fanfiction which will be created. A girl who can be programmed to do anything? Imagine the fanficers joy.
Yet another fantastic read!

*Missy Higgins* - my future wife???
I love her!!! Shes awesome nd soo deep. Does anyone else think that Where I stood was about a girl??
particularly:
There were sounds in my head
LIttle voices whispering
That I should go and this should end
Oh and I found myself listening
'Cos I dont know who I am, who I am without you
All I know is that I should
And I don't know if I could stand another hand upon you
All I know is that I should
'Cos she will love you more than I could
She who dares to stand where I stood
See I thought love was black and white
That it was wrong or it was right
But you ain't leaving without a fight
And I think I am just as torn inside
Absolutely!
I've loved Where I Stood long before she released it in her new album, and initially never thought of it as being about a girl. But when I saw her perform it at LiveEarth it suddenly hit me... I don't know why... but I just felt that it had to be about a girl. Just a feeling. I could be wrong. She is absolutely amazing live... much much better than any recording... anyone who hasn't seen her live should go for one of her shows. Her live performance of Where I Stood at LiveEarth to me.... is the best I've seen so far, full of emotion. Like she said, it's the biggest audience she has ever played to... and she just rose to the occasion. Check it out:

Who's that girl?
Was that detective in the Bones clip the woman who played Cassie in Buffy the Vampire Slayer? I think that was her name - Dawn's friend who dies, and later appears in Tara's place in "Conversations with Dead People."

Your news is much nicer....
Missy Higgins
She's amazing folks. If you haven't checked her out, definitely do so! She just finished up a tour of the US here performing in small venues and a chain of Borders stores. I had the chance to see her live a little over a year ago at the Roxy, and just recently at Borders too. She is super sweet and so talented.
If anyone is interested, I recorded her live performances in Westwood, CA on 10.19.07 you can check them out here:
