News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (September 5, 2008)

ENOUGH WITH 8
POWER UP's Stacy Codikow has co-produced a series of celebrity-driven PSAs designed to convince California voters to support gay marriage by voting against Proposition 8 in November (which, if passed, would amend the state constitution to limit marriage to heterosexual couples only).

The PSAs will be rolling out throughout September, and the first one includes Jillian Armenante (Judging Amy) and her wife Alice Dodd, and Heather Matarazzo (Exes & Ohs) and her new fiancee Carolyn Murphy, as well as several straight allies like Sara Ramirez (Grey's Anatomy), Amy Brenneman (Private Practice) and Melonie Diaz (Itty Bitty Titty Committee).

Watch it here:

Cool idea for a PSA, and it's nice to see Christine Lahti again (anyone else miss Jack & Bobby?).

Vote against Prop 8 in November, all you Californian readers!

WE'RE GETTING A RETIREMENT PLAN
As Jill Bennett pointed out on a recent episode of We're Getting Nowhere, she, Dara Nai and Karman Kregloe have logged over 40 episodes of their popular video blog. They will have done 47, in fact, by the time they're finished vlogging the first season of The L Word at the end of this month. That's a milestone most television shows don't even reach!

But like network TV shows, there eventually comes a time to put away the wigs, pack up the sock puppets, and let everyone go on to do other things, and the Sept. 29 episode of We're Getting Nowhere will be its last.

Thanks to Jill, Dara, and Karman for entertaining us all so thoroughly over the last year — they kick-started a video blog revolution on AfterEllen.com, spawned several other vlogs, improved on many a dreary TV scene with their own re-enactment of it, and made us laugh a lot along the way.

If you get lonely for the Terrible Three, you can always re-watch the episodes starting at the very beginning. And don't worry, we'll still be bringing you news about Jill, Dara and Karman on the regular.

In related news, Jenn and Dee will be vlogging South of Nowhere's final episodes on Come With Me If You Want to Live when the teen drama returns in October (sorry, Terminator fans, they decided to switch to SON for now.)

Look for more announcements about new and returning video blogs next week (all good news, I promise!).

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
In case you missed it: Leisha Hailey's Alice will be the star of the upcoming L Word spinoff.

House M.D.'s Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) might actually see some lesbian romance this season.

There's a 3-D Buffy world in the works.

Queer British rapper Mz. Fontaine has been nominated "Woman of the Year" by a European black LGBT community organization; buy tickets to the Sept. 20 awards event here.

Melissa Etheridge and Ellen DeGeneres will be among the 60 plus celebrities who will Stand Up to Cancer in a rare network multicast tonight at 8pm EST on ABC, NBC and CBS.

Laughing Matters ... Next Gen — a documentary by Andrea Meyerson about new and up-and-coming LGBT comedians, including AfterEllen.com vloggers Gloria Bigelow and Bridget McManus — will debut on Logo next Tuesday, Sept. 9, and then be available to watch on AfterEllen.com next Weds.

Karman and Bridget are going to be filming an episode of You Can't Take Them Anywhere! in Switzerland at the end of this month, and they're tentatively planning a meet-up in Zurich on Friday, September 26th. If you'd like to help arrange the event (pretty please!) private message Karman or send us an email at afterellentips@gmail.com.

Later today on AfterEllen.com, The Gay Agenda's Jay and Jon take on the DNC (Jay shares her experience blogging live all week from the Convention floor) and Sarah Palin's VP nomination, and the women of Cherry Bomb take on "fuzzy friendships." Plus: Hanifah and Olive play Wii games on a new episode of U People, and Michelle and Becca bring us the WBNA scoop From The Cheap Seats on Saturday .

That's it for this week! Got the inside scoop on a hot new lesbian/bi actor/musician/TV show/film? Tell us at afterellentips@gmail.com. Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

NOoooo!

WGN cannot end...sad... :( Oh well, at least we'll have the memories ladies. *raises glass of sparkling cider* to a job well done! Cheers. And, best of luck to the three on their future endeavors.

:)

God may have created man before woman, but there is always a rough draft before the masterpiece.

Nothing's picture

It's really been 35 years

since Billy Jean King whooped Bobbie Riggs' ass in tennis?  Yes, I remember it well.  Although I knew I liked girls at 15 years of age, I was still very puzzled about my sexual orientation.  But, there was one thing I knew for sure and that was that I was a feminist!  I called my step-father a male chauvinist pig, and rooted for the ERA!  BJK playing Riggs was a game for women vs. men, a win for the feminists who had long been trying to prove that women can do what men can do, and often better.  Ah, the 70's - those were indeed the days!

With the retirement of WGN and Terminator, it would appear that AE v-loggers are getting bored with entertaining us.  Pretty soon there won't be any more fun happening here on the AE site to draw us in.  I only became a regular when I discovered the fun vlogs, but with Bridgett and Liz on vacation, it's only a matter of time before they return then decide it's time to retire themselves.

dlink's picture

Coming and Going

I don't think you can jump to conclusions like that - there will always be vloggers, writers, shows that come and go, just like on TV. We're Getting Nowhere might be ending, but Cat on the Prowl just started, and it sounds like there will be more (good) news about vlogs next week. So yes, it's disappointing that WGN is going away, but I don't think it represents anything more than that. (Plus, a year of doing the same show every week, and I'd be ready for a change, too, so I can't exactly blame them.)

Also if you read closer, Dee and Jenn aren't retiring, they're just switching which show they talk about.

dlink's picture

BJK is a true pioneer

I remember watching her match against Riggs on TV as a kid. It was amazing and a real victory for women. Can't wait to read her book!

but whyyyy?!?!

what the f am i supposed to do when the l word comes back on? i can't rely on the actual show to be funny (or even good), i need we're getting nowhere! sad day, indeed.

Caitlin's picture

Damn

Man, that's sad about We're Getting Nowhere. But I guess Jill, Karman and Dara can't keep it up forever. Good luck to them in whatever they have planned for the future - and if they ever feel like coming back and entertaining us AE girls again, they'll be very welcome. :)

Whaaaaaat?!

I'm officially in mourning. No more WGN... That is so not BLWE.

I'm in mourning. Sept.

I'm in mourning. Sept. 29th, 2008 will be a very sad day. I'll bring my tissues when I watch the finale of WGN. :(

:D good luck to the terrible three. I'm sure they are moving on to bigger things. At least Dara & Karmen will still be blogging here.

Kinda bittersweet week

Yay for Mayra Lazara Dole!! The book sounds really interesting and she sounds really funny. And Allison Bechdel´s rules rock.

Sarah I too miss Jack and Bobby!

WGN is over?! I see a flood of tears coming! It´ll be missed for sure cause the Terrible Three are too much fun to watch but they deserve a break.

I´ve being dying to watch Laughing Matter: Next Gen, so glad that I´ll be able too!!! Can I join the YCTTA crew? I want love to travel and I can hold a camera :)

katy Gnosis's picture

Mayra Lazara Dole shocking info

Mayra suffers from MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) --which is best known from the movie “The Boy in the Bubble.” She wrote Down to the Bone when she was near death after being chemically injured and first being diagnosed with MCS, because she wanted to leave something meaningful behind. Though she survived the onset of MCS, Mayra still has to live in a glassed-in room isolated from anything with chemicals such as perfume, gasoline, paint, ink, traffic fumes, smoke, new technology, detergents, pesticides, paper, etc.

Even a better reason to read it!!

Does anyone know if she will publish it in Spanish?

chismes's picture

No more WGN?!

Noooo! ):

Damn...that ruined my night.

eki's picture

I'm another person sad to

I'm another person sad to hear that WGN is going to be ending, especially BEFORE the end of South of Nowhere. If any other video blog picked up South though, I'm glad its Jenn and Dee, because I didn't watch Sarah Connor, but I really love their vlog, so its cool they're doing a show I actually watch.
Elle Girl's picture

You know, the world is a

You know, the world is a very strange place. Just today I was watching the latest episode of WGN and thinking that it's so nice to have something to keep me sane throughout endless days of classes and other bs and to have something to look forward to on Thursdays, and now it's ending. I understand that the ladies have other projects they're working on, and that making a vlog is no small undertaking, but first Brunch With Bridget goes on hiatus, then This Just Out ends its second season (didn't it just start?), and there haven't been any new She Made Me Watch This episodes in a while, so this is not such a good time for the vlog world. I truly do understand that everyone is busy and that this isn't a primary job for most of you, but you've got to give us something to tune in to! We certainly aren't getting nearly as much quality lesbian entertainment on television, so where else can we turn?

Sarah, if you need vloggers, bloggers, writers, editors, anything like that which may be in short supply, why not just ask the wonderful community you've helped to kick-start? The After Ellen community would, I'm certain, be more than glad to participate in the creation of the very things that keep us entertained and thinking about issues facing our community, as well as laughing our butts off. I, for one, would be a willing participant!

Sarah Warn's picture

We have some exciting news coming up...

but out of respect for WGN and what it's meant to a lot of AfterEllen.com readers, I wanted to let this week be about celebrating the Terrible Three, and save the other vlog news for next week.

(FYI we'll be posting a new episode of SMMWT! on Monday, with our take on the first week of new fall shows.)

Di's picture

Ah, thank you

That makes me so happy to know there will be a new SMMWT! I was looking for that tidbit on the final page and figured, no, you didn't mention it, guess we'll have to keep waiting. Maybe you should add that so it's not all sad vlogging news...
Nothing's picture

Maybe you should have a separate topic

that deals with the changes taking place on AE.  This week of lesbian news really contained a lot of great stuff to talk about, but it was all over shadowed by WGN leaving.  That's been the case whenever an AE staffer leaves also.  It's kind of like working in an office with your best friends and finding out they decided to get another job and you won't be seeing them every day.  It's surprising and unsettling at the same time.  We need a private place to mourn and lick our wounds.  BLWE isn't given the positive attention it deserves when sad news is tacked to the end of it.
OhThatCris's picture

Er,

I'm almost certain that's Stand Up to Cancer. I'd hate to think they were cheering it on...

*edit*...and nevermind because it's been fixed to make me feel lame. :p

Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me...

WTF!!

i feard this day would come. the end of WGN. i was thinking about it the other day. crazy. i hate that its over. i sense there will be many angry lesbians. lol

you HAVE to spread your wings and fly. with out the red bull. ha

... but i get why its over, and i respect that. i wish them all the success and love.

good luck Karman, Dara, and Jill. really.

<3

*tear*

Gillian's picture

many angry others too...

it won't just be lesbians that will be angry WGN is finishing. we don't all have to be gay to watch WGN or use this site... sometimes i wish people would remember that.

i'm not exactly happy WGN will be no more, i instantly thought of what's going to happen to the SoN recaps and L Word season 6 recaps?

not entirely thrilled it's jen and dee taking over SoN, i probs won't watch. i watched the first terminator one, and was annoyed by jenn taking over and talking all the time, and always being right up to the camera, so didn't watch the rest. not sure if that was a one off, but most of the pics of their other vlogs, she's in the front too...

guess we can't all be happy with all the vloggers!!

i know it's a bit early, but any ideas on who will be doing the l word?

look forward to whatever the terrible three do next.

Di's picture

same here

I just want to add that I agree with you that you don't have to be a lesbian to enjoy WGN and this site....and I think sometimes people do forget that. That's why I'm glad to see blogs on here cover other topics too. But the WGN girls have it, and I think their appeal is universal. It is a sad day to hear they're not going to be around on a regular basis, but somehow I think they will pop up somewhere soon. They're just too good at what they do.

Jay's picture

yeah, it's like if you're not a lesbian, then you will be by the time you finish reading your daily dose of AE.

Stupid

Pff...

I'm usually a happy observer that never comments but today I had to.  So, BLWE? Really? Really?  I'm going to, for this week only go out on a limb and rename it the Worst Lesbian Week Ever - losing WGN is retarded and I feel the need to drink and be angry.

limors's picture

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

I feel like I just started watching WGN (abd I actually kinda have), how can it be ending allready? :(

At least it will end with a 47, that's a bit of a comfort. I guess.

Anonymous's picture

If I´m really really

If I´m really really honest and I know this will bring angry comments but, I think WGN wasn´t that funny anymore lately especially with last weeks episode or the episode of 2 weeks ago, and I couldn´t finish this weeks episode because i kind of lost interest lets just hope there is 3way season 2, I wish all of them the best in the future with new projects and thanks for all their efforts

Get it while its hot http://www.youtube.com/user/HollywoodTOProd

bksn's picture

Agreed

Just a little support before you get your angry attacks.

However, I do hope you kept watching this weeks episode long enough to see Karman and Dara reenact the Jenny-Dana hookup from season 1 on the L Word. It was seriously laugh out loud hilarious and I'm not generally a person with a laughter control problem.

A.n.n.y.'s picture

I agree

Yes, they seemed to be a little tired of it .. wich I TOTALLY understand after so many episodes! It wasn't that I didn't think it was hilarious anymore, just compared to the beginning they were getting a little slow. But again, I don't blame them and I still LOVE them and am sad to see it end! :(
Dylan's picture

I guess we all find

I guess we all find different things funny :)

Me? Totally couldn't stop laughing with this weeks WGN, but that's just me :p

I didn't like them sitting

I didn't like them sitting on the floor. Jill had been holding back but started coming with it the last few episodes. I don't think they were into as they use to be. But with all that said I still loved WGN. Just to see Jill... drool :D.

I think we all need a group hug.

Nothing's picture

Well, if I were to be completely honest about it

I too felt as if they lost some of their spirit.  But, I was kinda comparing it to when they had guests on and things were really lively and fun.  So, I assumed they'd get their pep back at some point.  But, it looks like their pep done popped and they pooped out.
Anonymous's picture

NO, i totally agree with u!

NO, i totally agree with u!

And im not saying it to be mean, i just mean it as a observation.

it really hasn't been as funny as it used to be. i remember i would watch WGN in a lab at college and it was soo hard for me to keep in my laughs. i would giggle and people would look at me like "WTF is up with her?" lol...

but i can tell they're holding back, its pretty obvious, i would assume because of people's comments, and possibly the fact that they're tired (so many episodes!)

so i totally understand, and am not surprised they are going to wrap it up. So sad though.

Why God why?!?

No more WGN?

That hurts my heart hole! Seriously, with WGN, BWB, and TJO gone, I am crying salty tears.

But they've gotta have a reunion for the final season of the L word huh?

I agree with Madonna's post: drink and be angry!

Post Script: Drinking and angering will be taking place this Friday night at the Normandie room in WeHo...from 9PM on holla!

" Ilene Chaiken doesn't need tools...if you know what I mean."

Wow

No more WGN?!? Didn't see that one coming. At least not until SON ended. I do really wish it was after SON. Sad day indeed.

But I totally understand and respect the fact that Jill, Karman, and Dara are busy people and have lots of other things to do. I wish you girls the best of luck in all of your endeavors. Thanks for the laughs.

As Heidi Klum says every week on Project Runway, "Auf Wiedersehen."

Sad sad day. Totally not the best lesbian week ever. Lol.

WGN

Oh no, please don't let it end! I can't imagine the world without WGN no matter what you're talking about. Or not talking about.

JuliaG's picture

I can't believe

OMG I can't believce there'll be no more of Karman, Jill and Dara soon... it's such a bad news

they kept me laughing out loud every week :)

anyway, they did a great job throughout the 47 episodes and we'll love them forever

(yes i'm trying to reach the acceptance step of the grieving process)

Now I'm Getting Nowhere...

when WGN ends! Wow, a bit shocked now... Never saw that coming...

But still: Dara, Jill & Karman thank you for the hilarious vlogs and the hours of fun!

(I'm already on step three of the grieving process: first there was disbelief, than anger, now acceptance, the next will be: sent them money to continue or threaten them *joking*)

_______________

Choice, not chance, determines destiny...

Jay's picture

!

I see a long 3 week warning this time before the end of a vlog. Methinks this smells of planning, so this sounds okay to me. Though I really don't know how long Jill's going to last once the final season of the L word comes out and she realizes she can't talk to a camera about it.

So with Scribegrrl gone and WGN gone, who exactly is recapping the L word in February? I can't believe a recap would be overlooked so there's some plan in action over there, I can smell it.

Tricky lesbians.

bksn's picture

WGN

For some reason I started humming Carol Burnett's closing theme. It's been fun. Best of luck to Jill, Karman, and Dara in whatever they choose to pursue. I'm not going to join a campaign to keep it going. I happen to believe it is best to move on from things when it isn't fun any more. Like Garbo, like ABBA; Keep them screaming for more and dreaming of how great it might of been if only.

Again, Good luck to Jill, Karman, and Dara.

It has never been announced, but has SMMWT been 'cancelled' as well?

Trix's picture

Seconded, both

Yes, woez about WGN - I thought they'd at least do the final series of the L Word. Oh well.

And I was wondering about SMMWT as well. I know Sarah and Lori are both busy, but I miss Sarah's rants and Lori's ...charts. Yeah.

Lori's picture

Nope, SMMWT is still here!

Sorry we haven't updated SMMWT, but with work and travel schedules. It's been impossible to film SMMWT.

We are back on Monday SMMWT! with our take on the first week of new fall shows. We can't wait to report on our favorite topic...TV.

-Life is a Venn diagram

I am so relieved!

Thank you for this most welcome news, Lori. Its good to have a light at the end of a very long dark tunnel...! Okay, I'm being over-dramatic now, but it will be great to have you two back. Bring on Monday!

Jessy's picture

Such sad news :(

LOVED that PSA! Thanks for sharing that one!

I will miss WGN a lot. I was looking forward to seeing them do the last season of The L Word, if only they would do that season *sigh* But I do understand why you're gonna stop ;)
I say bring back some of those guestvloggers for the very last one!

Great BLWE!

Vanessa V.'s picture

Another sad girl here...

Another sad girl here... I've watched every single WGN ep since the first day, when Dara couldn't even be there and it was just Jill and Karman in Jill's bed. haha And Jill was flaunting her boobs. :D Ahem, yeah, that's what I remember most. That first ep was really cute, no one knew what to make of it, but most people thought it was funny. :)

*sigh* I was watching it yesterday and I was laughing so much that my cheeks hurt. And I thought to myself "this is too good to last forever". And today I read the news. haha

I think we'll be seeing Jill alongside Cathy DeBuono in their new vlog, coming up soon. I'm really looking forward to that, as I'm a big fan of Cathy too. And Karman will do the vlog with Bridget. But where's my Dara? :P I'll miss Dara if she doesn't get another vlog.

Anyway, the chemistry between "the terrible three" cannot be replaced. I'll be looking forward to the last WGN eps. And maybe someday, you guys will do a reunion or something.

Best wishes to all of you.

~ Vanessa

Initials

I also watched all the WGN epi's since the day it started!!! Hard to imagine an AE without WGN (just realise that a lot of lesbian shows have three initials: TLW, SoN, XWP... WGN). And you're right,, the chemistry between "the terrible three" cannot be replaced!!!
