News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (August 29, 2008)

WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE THE HUNGER
Given the long, torrid history of lesbian vampires, I wasn't surprised that HBO's new vampire series True Blood might include some girl-on-girl action. And lo and behold, this week HBO officially announced that "all the vampire characters in the series are actually pansexual." Uh, pansexual? I sure hope that doesn't mean "anything except lesbian."

Set in Louisiana, True Blood takes place in a time just after vampires have "come out of the closet" and are now advocating for the passage of a Vampire Rights Bill. In the opening credits, a church's sign declares "God Hates Fangs." Amid all this, small-town waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) falls for a seductive vampire who has been around since before the Civil War. Shortly after their first meeting, Sookie rescues him, catapulting her into an intense relationship with the dead.

The series is executive produced by openly gay Alan Ball, who gave us a nuanced relationship between two gay men as well as a lesbian story line for teen Claire on Six Feet Under. During a conference call with LGBT press this week, Ball did confirm, "Yes, there will be lesbian characters on True Blood." Woohoo! But he also admitted he doesn't know much about the way lesbians have been portrayed on TV.

AfterEllen.com contributor LeeAnn Kriegh attended the press conference and asked the important questions for us.

AfterEllen.com: A little earlier you mentioned the progression that you've seen in portrayals of gay males on television, and I wonder if you see a similar or in fact some other progression ... in the portrayal of lesbians on television.
Alan Ball: I have to preface my answer by saying I really don't watch that much television. I have like three shows that I watch religiously, and then I don't really watch much of anything else, just because I don't have time. So I may not be the person who can really chart the evolution of lesbian characters on television.

I do know that I recently saw the French movie Tell No One, and there were a couple lesbian characters in that, and I really loved the way that was handled. It wasn't about the fact that they were lesbians. It was just that the sister of one of the main characters was a lesbian, and he was actually really good friends with her lover. Seems like he was actually closer to the lover than he was to the sister, and that I really appreciated.

I'm certainly aware of The L Word. I haven't watched it, so I'm not really sure I can answer that question in a way that's educated.

HBO told us that the lesbianish vampire who shows up later in the series is named Pam, played by Kristin Bauer, who seems to have a thing for Sookie. Here's what Ball said about her: "There is a vampiress who works [at the vampire bar Fangtasia in Shreveport] who definitely exudes a certain lesbian energy in a really kind of entertaining and seductive way. Pam is a woman who was made vampire in Victorian England, and she dresses all goth when she's at work, but when she's not at work she basically wears Chanel."

Kristen Bauer (right) with actor Liz Vassey at the
world premiere of
The Ring in 2002

I've seen the first two episodes of True Blood, and to be honest, I loved them. They were just the right amount of creepy twistedness-meets-naiveté in the form of Anna Paquin's character, who oozes an innocent sensuality that I'm sure would be tempting to vampires, pansexual or not. But given the show's heavy-handedness with its gay metaphors and lush, over-the-top sexuality, I'm also guessing that any lesbian vampires are going to be walking the fine line between predatory and seductive.

Can Alan Ball overcome his lack of knowledge and deliver a sexy lesbian vampire who overcomes decades (if not centuries) of stereotypes? You be the judge. True Blood premieres Sept. 7 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

SO LONG, FAREWELL ...
After five years of interviews with lesbian and bisexual models, actors, reality stars, rock stars and authors; 26 video blogs; endless processing critical analysis about gender, reality television and killer lesbians in space; and even a few fluffy pieces about lesbian fashion and butches (hot!), it's time for me to say auf Wiedersehen and pack my knives pencils and go.

Today marks my last day as managing editor of AfterEllen.com, and I have to say, my life would not be the same without this site. I will certainly miss working with the wonderful staffers here, starting with Sarah Warn, who convinced me to write about gay stuff in the first place. It's also been a joy to work with Karman Kregloe, Trish Bendix, scribegrrrl, and all the numerous freelance writers who have been so kind to me when faced with my edits.

Last but not least, thanks to all of you who have read my work over the years. I've genuinely appreciated your time, your comments and your emails. I'll still be writing my column, Notes & Queeries, every month for AfterEllen.com, and you can always visit me at my website if you're interested in how things are coming along with my novel(s). Keep in touch!

The online auction for B.J. Fletcher, Private Eye is on through Sept. 1 — bid on a walk-on role now!

Monday is a national holiday here in the U.S., so we're only going to be publishing a few blog posts on Monday, and a spooky/campy new episode of Ghostella. Enjoy the weekend, and we'll be back on Tuesday with lots more lesbian-ish content!

That's it for this week! Got the inside scoop on a hot new lesbian/bi actor/musician/TV show/film? Tell us at afterellentips@gmail.com. Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

Mischa barton is playing a lesbian? this should be interesting! I used to watch neighbours every day right before work, love it! But the girl in the wheelchair really annoys me i think it will be a very short lived romance. Tatu were great whether they were fake gay or not. And goodbye to Malinda Lo, good luck with future projects!

Thank you...

Goodbye and good luck to you Malinda Lo... we will miss you! Thank you for all your years of hard work here at After Ellen. I feel certain that you will find success in your upcoming projects and I'm happy to know that you'll still be making appearances on After Ellen every so often.

I was sad to hear about the passing of lesbian pioneer Del Martin, but was happy that she and her partner of 55 years, Phyllis Lyon were able to officially marry each other a few months prior to her death. The LGBT community owes a great debt of thanks to both of these women for standing up for their beliefs and for their openess during a time when few people were being as vocal as these two women.

Malinda Lo. You´ll be missed but I´m glad to hear that you´ll keep writing your "Notes and Queeries".

Sub Zero Nelle rocked! And is it me or does Mischa Baton like to play gay?

On another note, so cool to hear that Phyllis Lyon and Dell Martin had the chance to get married before D.M. passing (sad news).

Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon

"Without a doubt, AfterEllen.com could not have existed without the hard work that Martin and her wife, Lyon, did for over half a century in advocating for our rights as lesbians."

That is so true. Del and Phyllis paved the way for all of us to live our lives openly and with dignity. And, every couple, gay or straight, could learn something from their 55-year relationship. They embodied, "until death do us part."

Thank you miss Malinda Lo for everything! Your articles, columns, videoblogs and all you said in them. You've been a mighty voice on this site and you will surely be missed. Most defenitely by me, i always loved your humour and your have inspired on me on several occasions. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and will be looking forward to your new installment of Notes and Queries!

Thank you Malinda!

Glad to read that you will still be doing your monthly column. :)

Blessed be, Del...and Phyllis...two women who lived their lives fully and truthfully...wonderful examples for us all.

And some interesting tidbits...

I actually watched and enjoyed Cupid the first time around...totally because of Paula Marshall...and it was a sad day when it ended. This should be interesting...I think it might be the first time a show that didn't do well in the ratings is being revived and recast for another try.

And thank goodness for South of Nowhere FINALLY coming out on DVD! I was wondering what that collective "YAY!" I heard shouted 'round the world was all about. lol

Oh, and I am always up for a good and sexy vampire storyline...so I will be checking out Anna Paquin and company...I just hope Allan Ball educates himself in the meantime when it comes to lesbian characters and relationships and just doesn't "wing it." ;)

Thanks for the great article

Thanks for the great article about Del Martin's passing. She was such a pioneer and advocate for us. She love story with Phyllis Lyon was legendary. I'm so glad that she was able to get legally married, I only wish their marriage was recognized by the federal government before she passed away.

I've been an Obama supporter

I've been an Obama supporter for years and a volunteer with his campaign. As much as I was glad that he gave us a shout out in his speech, I just feel frustrated that when marriage is mentioned, it's always in the context of "visiting a sick partner in the hospital", which is barely a factor with living wills and never in the context of the government legally recognizing our families and giving us all of the benefits and tax considerations that our heterosexual counterparts have.

Your contributions to AE will be sorely missed.

And thanks for that beautiful tribute to Del Martin. She and Phyllis Lyon were truly great pioneers of equality. I'm glad that they managed to get married - for real this time - before she passed.

Yay Portia!

Wow, my day was going pretty badly until I heard this news! And Sarah Paulson as an added bonus. :)

And also yay Neighbours for another gay character! It's pretty funny that in 2004 there was so much fuss about Lana and Skye, and this time around I hadn't even heard about it until I read it here.

True Blood

I've read the first few books by Charlaine Harris, and they do allude to Pam's preference for women- though most of the vamps seem to be sexually fluid. Sex and feeding is often wrapped up together, and there are some humans who willingly submit to being bitten.

Not sure who I pictured in the roles, but Anna Paquin will certainly do as Sookie. She fits the part physically (digging the blonde hair!) and has a drawl to match. Might be worth checking out- the books are campy enough that I don't think a bad film version could really ruin them for me.

Everytime I read about Del

Everytime I read about Del Martin I tear up. It is so extremely sad that she passed but I am so, so, so glad that she lived long enough to attend her own wedding.

The Question

Greg Rucka's done some awesome stuff for the character of Renee Montoya. Any comic fans that haven't should check out Crime Bible: Lessons in Blood. I own the issues and the hardcover, just to support the title in the hopes they'll give Renee her own weekly comic one day.

Ally Sheedy...

I had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Sheedy, Ally's mother, a few years ago at a Christmas party in New York City. Charlotte is a literary agent who runs her own agency and just happens to be a lesbian. So, is it any wonder why Ally is comfortable doing lesbian roles?

Del Martin was survived by her Wife, Phyllis Lyon

It’s important to note that Del Martin was not only “survived by her partner of 55 years, Phyllis Lyon,” but, by her wife. Although technically, they were not married for 55 years, their marriage should have been acknowledged such as “her partner of 55 years and her wife, Phyllis Lyon.” The fact that they were finally able to be legally married was far too important a fact to leave out of that statement. Del and Phyllis are lesbian heroines, if ever there were any. Has there been any mention of the cause of death?

The Question!

I can't wait for Final Crisis: Revelations! I love Renee Montoya aka the Question. She is a total badass. She did have a liason with a non-Batwoman female in the Crime Bible series, dunno what that means for their relationship. I really hope she shows up in Batwoman's spin-off!

True Blood Pilot

I have already seen the pilot to this show. A rough cut actually and I thought it was all right but I wasn't really excited about it. Now that there is going to be a lesbian angle I might give it another chance...And yes I realize that isn't the only reason I should watch it, but I don't care. Sue me.

And this is the worst lesbian week ever...Malinda Lo will be missed. Mostly by me.

Another lesbian connection to Cupid

Jeremy Piven played the original Cupid. It was his first TV show after Ellen ended. (He played Ellen's cousin Spence.) I actually watched it because he was on it, and now I know why Paula Marshall seemed familiar when I started watching Out of Practice.

According to this article, "[Del] Martin has deeply involved in NCLR over the years since it's creation, and her family requested in lieu of flowers, to make a donation towards the No on 8 Pac at www.nclrights.org/NoOn8."

I also can't wait for You and I (the movie) personally...even if I can't see it in theatres, it's going to be lovely to see Mischa Barton play gay...again.

Oh, hi Anna paquin...yeah...I can't really read the article with that hot picture of her, thanks.. (I really enjoyed the lesbian storyline of Claire on Six Feet Under. But it shouldn't have been a storyline. It should have just been FACT.) So uh, yeah. If Anna's making out with a girl I will totally watch. A lot. Too bad I don't get HBO.

I hate goodbyes. So I'll say see you later, Malinda. I will check your website from time to time. (Sniffling). I am wishing well on your novels. If E. lynn Harris, an out Gay MOC can make it on the national bestseller list, I know you can too Malinda as a out Lesbian WOC. XOXO.

Batwoman a possible lesbian in disguise? Keep my eye on that one.

True Blood. I am a vampyre movie freak so I got to keep my eyes glued to that one as well.

It's nice listing known screenwriters and directors that are out LGBTQI. It makes my life feel more normal.

I enjoyed Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon's herstory. My only exposure to DOB was through my research about Lorraine Hansberry's lilterary work and personal life.

Best of Luck Malinda

A fitting end to your fabulous contributions to AE,a well wriiten tribute. Del Martin was the MLK of lesbians to me. I hope hope all the younger women on this amazing site realize that none of this would be possible without the activist forebearers, Del and Phyllis being among the first. All tributes I read stress the fact that they were able to marry legally before Del's death, which is an important culmination of their work, but i think that standing up for their relationship since 1955 and staying committed for all these years speaks louder.I only hope and know there are those who will carry on the work. I quess all that is left to say is rest in peace Del and THANK YOU.
