Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (July 20, 2007)

SARAH SHAHI THANKS LESBIANS FOR THE RIDE
At the recent Television Critics Association conference in Los Angeles, our own Malinda Lo had a brief chat with former L Word (and AfterEllen.com Hot 100 List) hottie Sarah Shahi. While Shahi was there promoting her new show, Life, Malinda was able to ask a couple of lesbian-centric questions that referred back to her role as Carmen de la Pica Morales on The L Word.

Malinda asked Shahi if she knew that she was No. 5 on the AfterEllen.com Hot 100 list, to which she replied, "I did not know that." When asked if there's anything she wanted to say to her lesbian fans, Shahi told her, "I  thank them for staying so loyal to me and for coming with me on the ride of The L Word, and I hope they continue on with me."

I think I can safely speak for all of us when I say, "Oh don't you worry, we will."

You can get your Sarah Shahi fix this fall on her NBC new cop drama (the aforementioned Life), in which she plays Detective Dani Reese. While Carmen de la Pica Morales with a gun could have been a little scary (remember the damage she did with a mere fire extinguisher?), I'm looking forward to seeing Shahi packing some (additional) heat.

SOUTH OF NOWHERE SEASON 3: SPASHLEY SPARMEN?
The latest promo for the upcoming season of South of Nowhere is one of the most lesboriffic I've ever seen for the show. Not only do we see a brief rehash of the high drama that was the Spencer/Ashley romance in Season 2, but we also get a glimpse of a new love interest for Spencer. While Ashley is embroiled in some lame do-over affair with Aiden, Spencer looks to be getting cozy with a brand new cutie.

Rumor has it that the new girl is named Carmen, and that she will help take Spencer's mind off that little heartbreaker Ashley Davies. If we're lucky, she'll also take our minds off of the lesbian PDA-lessness of Season 2.

And what is with TV lesbians named Carmen? Should I be flattered?

Uh, no, probably not.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Out lesbian contestant Sabrina Matthews was voted off the NBC comedy competition Last Comic Standing in the first round of the semifinals. Last season, out lesbian contestant Michele Balan made it to the final four before getting the boot.

If you missed the True Colors Tour this summer, you will soon be able to get a taste of that musical buffet in the form of a soundtrack. The CD will feature songs by Cyndi Lauper, The Cliks, Indigo Girls, The Gossip, The Dresden Dolls, Debbie Harry and other artists who joined the tour. One dollar from the profit of each CD sold or downloaded is being donated to the Human Rights Campaign. Two songs on the soundtrack, Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors (Morel's Pink Noise Mix)" and Erasure's "Early Bird (DJ Manolo's True Colors Mix)" featuring Cyndi Lauper were recorded and remixed specifically for inclusion on the CD as a special (not to mention collectible) treat for buyers. The CD will be available on Aug. 7.

Out lesbian actor Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, who plays a lesbian drug dealer on HBO's acclaimed series The Wire, will be publishing her memoir this November. Grace After Midnight will chronicle Pearson's harrowing childhood, her stint in prison for second-degree murder, and her eventual rise to fame via The Wire.

Season 4 of The L Word is now available for download on iTunes. Nifty lesbian factoid: Season 4 is already ranked No. 10 on iTunes' list of top downloads for TV seasons. Get it here.

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

Re: Sparmen

FYI. The name of the Spencer/Carmen relationship has been dubbed 'Spangs'...Carmen has been given the nickname Bangs, so...

It sounds a hell of a lot better than 'Sparmen' anyday.

...and all was well, and the world smiled.

Wicked1's picture

No Sparmen is the correct

No Sparmen is the correct term. That whole Spangs term is stupid, and it was fine when we didn't know her name and people were referring to her as Bangs (I didn't), but we know her name now, Carmen, not Bangs. Plus the whole name pairing terms mostly have 2 syllables.

I dub it Spencer/Rebound girl, I don't support it enough to name the upcoming fling, with a Ashley wannabe. As long as it eventually leads back to Ashley, I can deal with it.

FonFreaka.'s picture

^ I think it's funny how

^ I think it's funny how some people get so hot and bothered by it. Oh, well. To each her own, I guess. I still like Spangs, and that's what I'm going to say. *shrugs*

It's obvious that Spashley will be back together by the end of the first half of the season, though. It's just a process of implementing a new character in order to broden the storylines--kinda like when Kyla was introduced. Hopefully, this'll bring around other new queer characters.

...that is, unless Aiden decides to try and hook up with Carmen. Which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

...and all was well, and the world smiled.

Batwoman

In October Batwoman will be in the 8 parter Gotham Underground with the batboys, and The Question(Renee Montoya) gets her own 5 part comic Crime Bible: The Five Lessons Of Blood which is written by Greg Rucka who was also responsible for 52 and Gotham Central.

Woohoo

Thanks for the info! Shall definitely check these out.

A Bit On

The more serious side this week.  But well written and truly informative.  Will be looking out for the above mentioned shows.

Well done.

ComicCon

If you happen to make it to ComicCon next week, check out Tor Books' booth. We're the largest publisher of sci-fi/fantasy books. There are going to be author signings and lots of free stuff, so stop on by.

As for South of Nowhere, can Ashley please stop showing off her ridiculously toned abs this season? I hope they add more gay PDA's, if they use hairbrushing again as an allusion to sex, I'm dumping the show.
FonFreaka.'s picture

...

In my opinion, any queer PDA is good PDA. It's a sign that we're one step closer to having a show like SoN (or better...) on mainstream TV.

Sarah Shahi

If she's on this new show, does that mean there's basically no chance for her to reprise her role on The L Word if it calls?  So then I'll never see Shane/Carmen again? Nooo!

lilpinkchainsaw's picture

Well, Sarah did say 'and I

Well, Sarah did say 'and I hope they continue on with me'. Which, to me, says 'I'm moving on, you should move on WITH ME'.

So, all you Sharmens, follow that former cheerleader!

Sarah doesn't want to come back. She would never say that to any journalist but I think that's basically what she said here. If she'd really wanted to come back, you wouldn't be able to keep her away, IF she really did want to come back as badly as most of her fans want her to.

JBLuver's picture

Maybe it's because I'm a dirty bisexual but..

I've always thought it was perfectly logical that a 16 yo (Ashley) who was previously in love and willing to have baby with a boy (Aiden) would get back together with said boy eventually. There is just too much history for a couple like that not to get back together.

Good for Spencer for finding a new girlfriend.

I'm sure the ensuing square be will be all teen angsty and delicious.

N.O.way's picture

maybe it's because I'm a jaded, bitter lesbian, but...

I was kind of expecting it, too. that was a close relationship between them and Aiden is, sorry ladies, a very pretty boy.

besides, teenagers flip-flop alllll the time. especially on television.

but I do have to admit I looooove watching people be jealous on tv. I don't know why, it's just one of my favorite things to see. So this season should be mucho fun for me.

SON

sarah sashi is hot!!!i want to have her babies lol!

OK guys,, one questions if anybody would like to respond  but i'm desperate to know..... where can i get previous seasons of South of Nowhere??? i'm intrigued now!!!I thought i would find them for rent in blockbuster just like they have the l word but they dont carry it so i'm wondering if they would be available on sale already?...

Answers will be very apprecciative!

Ma-lis-a's picture

Unfortunately...

the only way I know of that you can purchase previous seasons of South of Nowhere is from iTunes. There's no DVD set that I know of, so if you don't mind watching them on your computer or video iPod, iTunes is the only way to go to own 'em.

The-N is showing season two episodes I believe, but other than that, you'll probably have to tape/record the episodes if you want to get it.

SaturnaliaGirl's picture

I love SON!! ..plus where to get previous seasons

I can't begin to say how much I love SON! I'm not sure about the whole Carmen thing, cause you just gotta love ashley, but I guess she needs to stop clinging to Aidan before miss spencer can take her back..and I guess while she waits she's allowed some good fun!!

As for previous seasons and where to get them, there's a spashley forum where they have all the episodes and even webisodes to download. They take a while to download (like 2 hours each), but it's worth the wait...and if you're really anxious, I think they have the links to the episodes on youtube, where it's obviously faster but not as good a quality and you can't save them to your computer.

Here's the link: http://spashley.com/ (you have to register, usually takes about a day to complete the registration I think).

Anyways, I hope it helps.

don't forget to support

It's great that you posted this and all...but people please remember to support the show and download it off of itunes if you can. Right now it is one of the only ways to show financial support for the show (unfortunately).

Downloading epis off of the forum is mainly for vid-makers and those who can't use itunes or the-click  (like international fans). Getting the epis from the forum is fine, but they stres on there to buy them from itunes if you can, so the suits know how much people love the show.

Batwoman

I am very much looking forward to the upcoming development of both Batwoman and The Question this fall. I hope DC continues to have the guts necessary to keep these strong women characters just that, strong. (And well having a tryst together too would be great!)

Spangs!!

Happy-Aggressive-I'mATop Spencer is the best.  Ashley eat your heart out.

Did Batwoman ever actually make an appearance in 52 other than a clandestine meeting with Renee in a park?  Her ex-Renee had a lot of coverage in the first several months but I trailed off around #26.  I'll have to check out the spin-offs I guess.

According to the former producer Nancylee Myat (?), South will never be released on DVD.  So, supporting it through itunes is the best course of action.  When the season aires this August you will be able to watch the current episode on The-N.

roni1133's picture

Where did you hear/read

Where did you hear/read Nancylee Myatt talking about the show never being released on DVD?  I'm kind of obsessed with TV on DVD and have been hoping SON would eventually be released, so I'm interested in the exact quote.

wickedgrrl's picture

conference vids

It was on one of the conference vids uploaded by frakin08 on youtube.  I'm not positive the exact quote but she said it comes down to them not being able to make money off of DVD's.  I don't have the conf vids memorized as many on the forum do, so I can't readily tell you which one.  Anyone reading this know which vid it is?  Please share.
roni1133's picture

Thanks

Thanks wickedgrrl.  I haven't watched the videos from the conference yet (I don't know what's taken me so long), but I will do so soon.

It's called SPANGS get used to it! ;o)

My subject title is not directed toward you Karman. It's just a saying the Spang shippers have on the forum. We like to support the new AggressiveTop that Spencer has become, and hope to see alot of Spangs before the glorious Spashley reunion.

More Spangs screen timSpangedSpangede, may equal less Ash*** screen time. Spangs

Wicked, you beat me to posting on AE once again. You're lucky I had research to do! :oP

Maybe one day the suits will release the deathgrip they have on their wallets and give SoN a bigger budget, so it can be released on DVD. Then all will be able to indulge in the Spashley goodness. :oD

August 10th is fast approaching Karman, I hope you have a mic ready!

wickedgrrl's picture

Spangs!

I had to comment on our girls.  Its been awhile since I've had reason to post commentary on AE.  This week's column gave me two.

I'm a little jealous you have research and studying to do.  ;)

Batwoman in 52...

Heya,

Yes, she did. She was quite pivotal for one of the plots (The Crime Bible), though she appeared nowhere near as often as, say, Renee Montoya did.

Let me just say that about the third last issue of 52... I got very angry with the direction the plot seemed to be going at that point... But things didn't turn out the way I was expecting, and I was ultimately pleased with the way it ended.

I won't give away any spoilers by saying any more. :)

SoN

I don't know how I feel about another Carmen coming into my world...I'm still trying to get over the last one.

Glad to see that Chelsea's back for the new season of SoN. I hope they give her a good storyline this season.

I hope we get to hear more about Malinda's chat with Sarah Shahi

Batwoman - The novelisation of the comics...

I was unable to obtain the comic strip, (yet, I still have friends looking) but I did order the novelisation of 52 from Amazon, (By an author called Greg Cox: http://tinyurl.com/2yr4l3 ) and it makes no secret at all about Renee Montoya's, and Batwoman's tastes in women. It actually makes them every-day things. So,though the book makes no sense to me as a whole, it is well written, and I did order it, as I always wanted a lesbian superhero. (the reason that the book or rather it's story, makes no sense to me, as I have never read comic books so the mythology is very foreign for me)
eek's picture

Batwoman / Renee content in 52

Ordering the trade paperback of 52 is recommended.  They follow so many different characters and storylines in 52 that you really have to read the whole thing to get the good bits of Batwoman and Renee Montoya.  Best stuff was in the issue that came out the week of Christmas in which Kate (Batwoman) and Renee share a brief but meaningful kiss.

There is also a glimpse early in the series of a random hook-up between Renee and a "citizen of Khandaq."  Before Renee and Kate reconcile back in Gotham City, Black Adam literally busts in on Renee sharing some intimate time in bed with one of his more nubile citizens.

Can't wait for Crime Bible: The Five Lessons of Blood!!  (and Season 3 of South of Nowhere!!!)
wickedgrrl's picture

Geez!

I stopped reading at the absolute worst time apparently.  I stopped buying them after Thanksgiving for monetary income reasons and I was tired of Renee running around with no face dude chasing Black Adam.

I guess its time to go back.  Are they continuing Renee/Kate in the rest of 52 because I know they are now counting backwards?  Sounds like I might be getting back into the DC game.  I had wittled my comic spending only to Buffy again after spending so much on 52 each month.

wickedgrrl's picture

The novel.

I was killing time at a bookstore at 1am this morning and came across the 52 novel.  I've never gone from comic to novel like that.  It was interesting to read it in that form.  I discovered the Christmas kiss was in week 33.  I may have to find that issue.  I hope to one day flush out my collection of 52.

Lesbian Koalas!

How did I miss that one?!! That New Zealand Herald article is too funny for words:

"Our aim was to determine the extent of differences in the homosexual and heterosexual behaviour of female koalas and thereby to determine the purpose of female homosexual behaviour in the koala," say the researchers.

OK, I'm already working on my Koala suit for the next Midsumma festival....

PS Karmen - that was the best Best Lesbian Week Ever, ever.

Brooke Vallone

Spencer's new love interest this upcoming season of South of Nowhere is played by Brooke Vallone, whom The N promos don't do any justice whatsoever, by the way. Homegirl is gorgeous and a good match for Ashley, I think. We'll just have to wait and see!

p.s. Carmen may be a hot lesbian name but Karman is hotter ;)
