News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (June 1, 2007)

LITTLE SURFER GRRLS
In preparation for the June 18th debut of Logo's new, six-episode reality series Curl Girls, we've just launched our new Curl Girls section with lots of photos and videos, like these:

If you recognize Erin in the video above, it's because she was featured in Logo's original 2005 Curl Girls special, which was the inspiration for this new 2007 series (Erin and Vanessa are the only two from the special who ended up in the series). Since our site is now owned by Logo, we get extra photos and videos, but we'll still write a (fair and balanced) review of the series when it debuts and make fun of it with lengthy weekly recaps, like we do with The L Word and Work Out.

And trust me: on a show about six lesbian/bi women who spend their free time surfing, drinking, fighting and hooking up, there is plenty to make fun of.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Rosie may have abruptly departed The View (see Scribe Grrrl's article on why this was inevitable), but I hear through the industry grapevine that Rosie has already inked a deal to host her own talk show to air possibly as early as this fall. She's also working on a book about her struggles with fame titled Celebrity Detox, according to People magazine. Is America ready for All Rosie, All the Time? I'm not sure ...

I had lunch with Xena's Renee O'Connor when she was in town yesterday, and she caught me up on the various projects she's working on now, including a role in the new Western Ghost Town, opening this weekend in limited release. She plays a role that was originally written for a man, and she says they didn't change a thing when they cast her in the role (unfortunately, seducing a woman was not part of her character's story line). Find out more about the movie here.

In case you missed our blog post about it, Heroes is adding a lesbian cheerleader named April as a recurring character next season. We'll let you know when we know more.

Openly gay Cuban-American contestant Daisy made it to the final three on Bravo's Shear Genius, but she lost the big prize to fellow contestant Anthony this week. AfterEllen.com readers still love her, though.

Good news for Kristanna Loken fans, not-so-good news for fans of TV writing that doesn't suck: The Sci Fi channel has picked up Painkiller Jane for a second season, according to my sources. Yeah, I don't really understand it, either, but I'm happy for Kristanna, and at least we'll have an out actress on cable TV awhile longer.

On June 9th, Australia's SBS TV will debut Kick, a new multicultural ensemble drama that includes a story line about a young woman named Layla who is engaged to a man, but finds herself falling for another woman. (Thanks to Raven and Amanda for the tip!)

There's one openly bisexual woman on the new season of the U.K.'s Big Brother.

We said we were going to compile your/our list of AfterEllen.com Hotties by the end of this week, but it turns out we couldn't sift through the 783 comments (!) worth of names that quickly. But look for it on the blog early by early next week (we hope).

After four years of devoting a dozen hours each week to writing this column, I've decided to share the pain wealth with my staff. Starting next week, Karman, Malinda, Scribe Grrrl and I will take turns writing Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever., which means we'll each be writing it once a month. Why the change, you ask? So you can get a fresh take on your lesbian entertainment news, and so I can take a breather now and then — it's a lot of work trying to come up with new ways to make fun of bisexual women getting killed in horror movies, and lesbians getting pregnant on TV. But don't worry, nothing else about this column will change — same format, same schedule (new every Friday) and same great (or not-so-great, depending on the week) lesbian/bisexual entertainment news. Just different snarkers.

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

About Bug

I actually saw Bug last night, going in blind with no idea there would be lesbian/bi characters...

I loved it, but then again, I would. Still, you have to give props to a film where the lesbian (R.c.) is the only sane person in the movie. Literally.
jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

Bug seems to be very

Bug seems to be very polarizing: either you love it or you hate it. I read the reviews in both the Pittsburgh papers and thought, wow, wtf. So, you know, I went to see it. I loved it. It's so complex, and flat out weird, and I don't think Ashley Judd has ever stretched this far as an actress.
turkish's picture

Loved It Too

I'm going to third that by saying I loved Bug as well. And yeah the lesbian was the only sane person in the movie. I thought the actress who played her did a fantastic job. And no homophobia whatsoever in the movie. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about this movie on this site considering that the character in question isn't the usual lesbian stereotype you see in mainstream movies.
Queen Bea's picture

Me too

I'll admit that "Bug" is not for everyone, but I have to say that I liked it, too. And I also agree that the lesbian in it does seem to be the sanest one. There's no question that it's weird and disturbing, but it certainly gives you a lot to think about and talk about after viewing it.

Moreover, Ashley Judd puts in an incredible, and I think courageous, performance. Her disintegration is devastating and believable. Harry Connick Jr. also puts in a good performance, as does Micheal Shannon. Lynn Collins is sympathetic and does a lot with a relatively small role. And I think the set dressers must have had a field day in the last few scenes.

Best of all, though, is the dialogue. It's actually intelligent, yet still moves the story forward and fills out the characters. It made total sense to me to hear that the movie was originally a stage play, given how strong the dialogue was.

If you like a nicely twisted psychological thriller, this movie is one to see. Sarah, I hope you'll give it a chance.

Aussie Bourbon!!

You've just got to love the Aussie ads that don't entirely make sense!!

Aussie Bourbon

hi,

The ad makes sense to me, but I it;s because I'm an aussie.  But she is a bit of the airhead type

Lesbian/bi connection of Bug: The guy who wrote the play and adapted his play for the screen is Tracy Letts. He is the ex fiance of Sarah Paulson.

lipstick

i am definitely catching the episode about lipstick lesbians. nobody ever thinks i'm a lesbian, and i get it from both sides. straight people, particularly men, always assume i'm straight, and i've had many women approach me with a wary eye in lesbian bars and parties presuming that i was a straight or bi girl who just wanted to experiment. my own family has a hard time taking my lesbianism seriously because i am as feminine as i was before i came out and they have a preconceived notion of what a lesbian should look like. i'm glad this show is highlighting the particular invisibility issues femmes contend with.

loves it

I'm definitely drinking more Jim Beam =D

Kick

Australian television has been disappointingly lacking both multicultural and lgbt characters so for a show to give both is rather exciting. The last mini-series focusing on multicultural races (Dangerous, Fox8) was extremely well done so if Kick manages to stand halfway to it then it will be a good series indeed.

Perhaps your tipsters read about it in the latest Dolly magazine, and does actually mention Layla and her just-about-engaged boyfriend and girl-crush. Which is surprising due to Dolly's stepping around lgbt in most of its issues. For example, in a past issue in the sealed section a girl asked if having a lesbian experience made her gay. Dolly's response could be summed up as : 'well maybe but wait till you get older to make such a decision (as if it's an actually decision to make) and in the mean time look at all our pictures of hunky guys to make up your mind.'

I have issues with Dolly...

oh, and what an excellent ad for bourbon. I knew there was a reason I drank it.

Jox's picture

I love Jack & Jim, the only boys for me.

Leonharte, i saw the ad's for Kick on SBS on Monday nite. The few shots of Layla and her crush seemed pretty intense, that's what caught my eye so i looked it up on the net. I dont really Dolly magazine, i never did, i think those magazines rot your brain.

I liked the Jim Beam ad, i thought it was funny, poor unlucky Aussie men. Better luck for the girls tho, those chicks are hott... if only...

Usex Excel

Good luck for the counting of the votes. It is not as bad it seems at the first look :
- copy/paste
- some bit of editing & find/replacing in some wordprocessor
- counting and organizinf the data using excel.

My estimation is that it shouldn't take more than three hours.
Flame's picture

longer, actually

Ok, i had a glance through the votes and people have made a huge amount of typos, that is going to make the count so much more difficult with any tool i know... so add couple of more hours to my estimation :(

No! Don't do it Sarah!

At the risk of sounding like a slightly obsessed fan - don't stop the column Sarah, I look forward to it every week. It is the best piece of entertainment writing on the web. Not to detract from the other writers, I'm sure they will be great, but as good as you? Nah.
Chantal's picture

oooooh!

As much as I love Sarah's BLWE Columns, I'm looking forward to the others. And hey, Sarah's a busy girl and has done a great job so far, and she can definitely use a breather every now and then, who knows, now her columns will be extra Snarky ;-)

Tallyho

I agree, 2 women (one to read, one to input data), (a few beers) excel, sort, tally, and your done!  Along with the fifty million other things you girls have to do :)  Sounds like my kind of project.  (I love excel projects!)  But we can wait, we already know who our hotties are, altho it will be fun to see how this turns out.  My personal smokin' hot favorite,  Diane Lane!  Excuse me, my smoke alarm is going off!

I Love Best.Lesbian.Week.Ever!

Ashley Judd playing a bi character? That's sexy. The Liquor commerical: The girl seemed a little fake to me, a little to much acting was going on. I love the LGBT cartoon it was so cute. And I can't wait til Curl Girls!

Welcome Back!

Sarah:

First off - Welcome Back!!  It appears that you're week off was good (although you didn't bother to mention it to your ardent fans :-) who were all so happy that you were getting some time off .. lol).

Very good column (as usual) and although I am one who likes to come here and find that you've written the column, I do welcome the change knowing very well that it will be good that you'll be getting much needed breathers and also that different perspectives will be brought to the column.  I do believe that besides your followers missing you, that we are all confident that the column will definitely not lose it's edge.  AE has very competent, extremely witty and refreshing writers who are sure not to disappoint.

Keep up the great work!

Peace.

Secret Lives of Women

Considering I know the head of programming at WE, you should be scared, Sarah.  He's not what I would call a friend to our community.

You're the luckiest gal ever!

Having lunch with my future wife, Renee O'Connor. :)

So dish - what else is new with Renee? any chances of the much anticipated Xena movie? any more projects for her?

Man, I miss Gabrielle!

NLL's picture

Allllrighty then.

The aussie commercial made me cringe. The brunette was really pretty, but I kept waiting for the punch line. She came off like one of those tramps in the "Girls Gone Wild" videos.I guess if you drink enough Bourbon you believe that she has never been with a guy, and she really, really does prefer girls. God knows she said it enough during the commercial.

i spit out my soda when i

i spit out my soda when i read this. i know, the commercial does seem pretty skeevy.
TheWeyrd1's picture

I just LOVE Renee O'Connor

Tell me again, why is she married to a man? Oh yeah...kids...couldn't really be love...lol I'll be looking for that new movie when it comes out on DVD.
NorthernStar's picture

Not that it matters...

.... But Renee O'Connor isn't married.

She's divorced.

TheWeyrd1's picture

Yee Haaaaaawww

It could matter...really...since she's spending so much time hanging out with making appearances for the lesbo crowd! Thanks for the update. I really ought to visit her webpage more...

Okay...update...visited her website. Renee recently gave birth to a daughter with current BOYFRIEND...sigh  But she does love The Indigo Girls...she is so not completely straight...lol

NorthernStar's picture

She's a very private person

Never anounced her divorced even.

Iris was born last year, btw, and being the private person Renee is, we don't know who she is currently seeing or their gender, nor do we need to.

Renee

And just what WAS she doing at Dinah??? Just wondering :)
NorthernStar's picture

Showing gratitude to fans,

Showing gratitude to fans, for the most part.

(maybe a little bit of PR for her upcoming movie)

One doesn't have to be a lesbian to feature as a guest in the Dinah Shore weekend. Laurel Holloman is married to a man and was a guest there last year I think.

Boobon--er I mean--Bourbon

Um...can someone tell me the meaning of this commercial?  Besides watching a hot girl with a sexy Aussie accent, what was the point?  It was definitely overkill once her woman sits down and she says, "I just...love girls."  We got it, Sheila. <throwing out some Aussie slang lol>
Jox's picture

please explain? lol

The ad was made by Aussie men, for Aussie men. The two gorgeous women touching each other and wanting absolutely nothing to do with men is (in the mind of a straight male) THE ULTIMATE TRAGEDY, and Jim Beam is (apparently) THE ULTIMATE DRINK.

Well, that was my take on it anyway...

Finally!

I think we got the same thing out of the ad. TsC

The meaning of the commercial

Quote:
can someone tell me the meaning of this commercial?

Does it even matter? :P

Anyway, my take is that it emphasizes Jim Beam is THE drink, just like saying he/she is THE one.

The Tragedy, The Burbon

I thought it was about how men would think she is straight and would go for her but since she was and still is not into blokes (men), it is a tragedy.....thus, Burbon helps :-) am i making sense? hehe
Madonnaholic's picture

Ah-ha!

Alright, well all of your explanations seem to make sense.  I still think it's a dumb commercial, but don't get me wrong--I'm all about watching hotties in ANY capacity, so I can deal with the commercial. LOL

I'm such a pig...

Betty's picture

Oh!

Mcyw, your explanation seems to make more sense than mine.

Maybe because I watched two Jim Beam commercials in a row ("the girlfriend" & "the tragedy") so I paid special attention to the word "the": http://youtube.com/watch?v=LUWiXdBbEao

Written for a man huh?

So this movie Renee is going to be in a movie, not a mini series or something? I find it strange that there was no "women seducing action," in this endeavor. I'm a bit disappointed. *tear* Though I'm sure Renee doesn't want to be type-cast anyway, so all for the best. –Rachel

poll automation for the site

I think the site need to have an automated poll...so user can vote online and see the result immediately after the vote...and also have an option for the users to enter their nominations....that way it can be very interactive and dynamic....and results should be kept as well for future reference....

Jim Beam Ad - HELL YEAH!

ok, I kinda liked the ad, but coming from a resident - As if Australian Tv would ever air it!! I mean, has anyone seen it on their box over here??? 'cause I for sure haven't. The way national standards are at the moment I think they miiiiight allow it - maybe on 10 - i mean, they've had 2 gay moments/characters on Neighbors so they're probably more likely to show it than the other 2 networks... possibly ABC but they have almost no commercials so...

yes. It's an innovative and exciting ad in terms of exposure on Aussie TV (even if the characters are absolute bimbo's/fakes/unrealistic male-fantasy type characters) but I don't see it emerging on our screen's at present time.

Betty's picture

Lesbian-titillating ad in Australia

I don't know if this Jim Beam ad will ever be aired in Australia but there was this kinda suggestive lesbian ad a while ago. I remember it's a pizza ad, probably Domino. Anyway, there are 2 girls and a guy in a living. The guy goes out to get sth while a girl (Girl#1) takes a bite of the pizza. Suddenly Girl#1 feels so hot and jumps to the other coach, sitting next to the other girl (Girl#2), having her arms around Girl#2's shoulders and acting kinda macho. Girl#2 is weirded out and askes if Girl#1 is alright. The guy comes back and looks excited at the sight. I think the slogan is like "unleash your inner bloke" or sth like that. It's not explicit but a funny ad though.
