Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (May 23, 2008)

A BUNCH OF LESBIANS WALK INTO AN AWARDS SHOW ...
Several AfterEllen.com folks attended Logo's NewNowNext Awards last Monday night in MTV's TRL studio in Times Square, where Bridget McManus and Jill Bennett presented awards, Dara Nai and Karman Kregloe interviewed people for a future We're Getting Nowhere episode, and Lori, Dee and I hung out with the women of 3Way and ate too many pigs in a blanket.

Others in attendance? Elizabeth Keener, God-des and She, Chagmion Antoine, and whole lot of well-dressed gay men, plus gay-friendly straight women like Cyndi Lauper and Leona Lewis.

Here are some photos of us at the event:

Michelle Paradise, Bridget McManus and Julie Goldman

Karman Kregloe and Dara Nai

Bridget, Jill and Michelle Paradise rocked their award presentations, and the Cliks gave a great performance during the show, but unfortunately, only two lesbians actually won awards — the Cliks for Brink of Fame: Music and Julie Goldman for Brink of Fame: Comic.

(A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila won in the Most Guiltiest Pleasure category, but that's more like a vote against lesbian and bi women.)

But these were the winners chosen by Logo's academy (i.e., a panel of industry folks). Voting for the online winner of these awards (i.e., "the people's choice") is still going on, and those winners will be revealed when the show airs on June 7. So go vote now to contribute to lesbian world domination!

Then watch the awards in their entirety on AfterEllen.com on the evening of Saturday, June 7, when we'll post the show and WGN's coverage of it. (Yes, that's how I spend my Saturday nights — uploading videos. Jealous?)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Out on DVD on Tuesday: Degrassi Season 6 (the one where Alex becomes a stripper and Paige becomes a completely different character).

In case you missed it: Exes & Ohs has been renewed for a second season.

This week's episode of What's YOUR Problem? will be posted later today, and on Saturday, Retro Reviewing takes on Go Fish!

We had a great time at the NYC meet-and-greet on Sunday! I've posted a bunch of photos from it on the blog, and the We're Getting Nowhere team will be posting their episode about it on Wednesday. Thanks to everyone who attended!

Lastly, due to the Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S., there will be a smaller number of blog posts on Monday. (We need our beauty sleep! Or, at least some beauty rest.) But there will be a new article, and a new episode of Liz Feldman's show. Her guest on Monday is someone who has played a lesbian in the past (but not on The L Word this time); who recently guest-starred on a popular medical drama; and who made our Hot 100 list last year. Leave your best guesses in the comments!

Missing Dyke Drama

My facebook status is currently how much I'm missing lesbian drama from SON L Word, 3way and Exes and Ohs. They should all sync up so we have regular viewing throughout the year! though come fall we're set until March with SON, Lword and exes and ohs.

And look at this... Maxims no 1 last year......

they look very cosy.

Great B.L.W.E!

I'm glad Ellen made McCain feel uncomfortable - at least he didn't look all to comfortable to me. I seriously can't stand him. It's a shame that Barack nor Hillary nor McCain supports gay marraiges.

If Shonda Rhimes messes up Callie and Hahn's relationship next season (if they even get one) I might consider not watching the show... Sometimes you have to be harsh..! Oh and btw that kiss was H-O-T!

Can I just say that I am so confused by Tatu, I never got those two.

You gals looked so pretty at NNN! Can't wait for June 7th!! And cool that Julie won, she is one kick-ass comic!

yes,yes and yes

concure that i am also overly confused with Tatu and might also stop watching greys id they mess up callie-hahn relationship.lastly kudos to ellen!

all saints

From what I know, Charlotte Beaumont is not really a lesbian, she just wanted something more than she was getting from her husband. She had a few relationships with women (one was a onenight fling with a colleague, another a rarely shown storyline about her wanting a baby but her partner didn't) but then got it on with a male doctor.

Maybe it's just the stigma that the false lesbian story of t.A.T.u has given, and what it has done to their credibility, but You and I can't be anything worse than 90% of the movies churned out by Hollywood these days. Their new song, 'White Robe', is nothing bad and has a decent film clip. New album, Waste Management, will be out on the 29/11.

Charlotte Beaumont

If im remembering correctly and i'm probably not, Wasn't Charlotte Beaumont pregnant in a few episodes of All Saints it was either her or one of the other female doctors that was on the show? Although i do watch All Saints occasionally i would prefer the old episodes when Georgie Parker (Teri) and Libby Tanner (Bron) were on the show, but i must say that i'm glad that Von is still on the show.
Meri's picture

Charlotte...

Charlotte- what can I say?

I am avery big lover of All Saints, and I adore Tammy MacIntosh- I think she is great!!!

But Charlotte- when she first turned up on the show was a lesbian- introduced herself as "Im Charlotte and Im a lesbian" or somehting to that affect, and was great. She was a great ball buster of a doctor, not afraid to take crap, and even had a girlfriend who was actually SEEN in a couple of episodes.

But then you find out she was originally married to a doctor Vincent, which is OK, coz it happens- and Charlotte is still gay which is fine.

According to true soap fashion, she gets incredibly drunk sleeps with a male doctor and gets pregnant- decidies to keep the baby, but has a miscarriage.

After that, she becomes surprisingly(or not) asexual, until she meets a mysterious doctor at a conference, and despite her initially refusing him, gets swept off her feet by Spence, and they have a baby very quickly, before Spence leaves her for the wilds of Africa...

Now, I havent watched All Saints for about 2 1/2 months having been in Japan since March, but call me cynical if I dont have much hope for this relationship...

Charlotte

Yeah me neither, apparently in the paper last week (I haven't read it, someone just told me), it mentioned that this storyline might turn into some stalker thing with Rhiannon being obssessed with Zac (Charlotte's son).

But I don't know, I'm hoping it's going to be a good ending. Charlotte's been through a lot already.

Go Ellen!

I have school in half an hour starting off with a test and I'm still here reading this addictive BLWE column.

The NYC meet was on Sunday and I still can't stop thinking how amazing it was.

Sigh, no supporting gay marriage candidates this year. At least Cali unbanned gay marriage and it might be the beginning of the end of the "Don't ask, don't tell."

Ellen and Callica

I love that she called him on it, but it seems a bit hypocritical since she'd been hyping both of the democratic candidates as pro-gay and didn't bother to ask them the same question, because their answers would have been the same and even rung more hollow. Honestly, the "you can have separate but equal" is a less tenable position than "you can't have anything" in my opinion.

Of course, I will be voting Dem in the fall on the tiny chance that they will be better to us, but I don't think we should just praise them for giving us crumbs.

Grey's - just watched it, WHOOHOO!! I was out of town and couldn't watch it till tonight, and I had to keep myself away from AE so I wouldn't be spoiled. Who knew that would be so hard to do? But hooray. I honestly don't even care if they break up in a short time span - honestly I'd expect nothing less from any couple on that show. So long as they make it clear that they are bi or gay!

I'll probably rent that Tatu movie...love the characterization of the accents!  Why didn't they just get a russian girl to play Mischa's part?  Oh well.

Amazon 's picture

maybe

I think i should start watching All Saints again,  altough the other day i did watch an old episode of NCIS that featured a bisexual character or was it two? at least the bisexual character wasnt a killer in this episode.

I should probably watch Grays on sunday, i think thats when it airs on Australian Television, i should probably start watching more television again.

t.A.T.u. Movie

Really? They are "not gonna get us" to see this movie? Please speak for yourself, there is no "us" here, I am certainly going to see this movie, and I know a lot of people who are very much looking forward to seeing it as well. Your obvious hate and contempt for t.A.T.u. makes you blind. How else could anyone explain such a vitriolic knee-jerk reaction to two very talented, gorgeous young artists such as Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova? Still oh so mad that they aren't "real" lesbians. Seriously? Wow. Try to get informed about them. I know it's soooo easy to make fun of them, but once you get over your prejudice and condescending attitude, you may be surprised. Yes, this is a movie about "love" - no one said that "lesbians can't be in love." Putting words into their mouths to make them look like they have an anti-gay attitude - that's just shameful. Next time get informed before you write such a "review".

RavenDenise's picture

Calm Down

Wow, did you miss the part where some of the actors didn't even attend the premiere? Not only is the film based on fake lesbians (who did it for the money) in love, it's probably really crappy in quality as well. Don't let your fandom make you blind and subsequently waste money.

Nicki75's picture

t.A.T.u.

A lot of the people involved in making the movie were in Cannes, including the director Roland Joffe. How can you know the movie is "crappy" if you haven't even seen it? Maybe it is, I don't know, but I'll wait with my judgment till I've actually seen it. You say I may be "blinded by fandom" - how would you call your attitude then?

Yulia and Lena only play a very small part in this movie, this is not a movie about t.A.T.u. - they are simply the inspiration for the two main characters to pursue their dreams and their love for each other. Just like t.A.T.u. have been inspiring for a lot of young people, have a look around the various forums - which still exist - if you don't believe me. They are still going strong in Russia and they have a very strong fanbase in Europe, Asia, the US, South America - granted, they aren't as big as before, but ultimately (in my opinion) it's not about the money you make, or the MTV Awards you get, it's about the impact you have and the message you want to send. And no, their message is not "gay for pay", please don't limit them to such a tabloidish epithet.

Rest assured I'm not "blinded by fandom" - I'm not someone who praises everything they do - but I like them, I like their music, I like their attitude, I like their feistiness, and I'm quite curious to see this movie. I'll let you know what I think about it when I've seen it.

Persephone's Nautical Nun's picture

Whoa. While I agree that

Whoa. While I agree that Nicki75's post was a little vitriolic, you're not making many valid points here. I'll touch on the fake lesbians in a minute, but are you really going to judge a movie you haven't seen? Isn't that the same kind of thinking we've been trying to fight for years?

And as far as "fake lesbians" go, what do you call a majority of the actors on The L Word? They're all "gay for pay." It was an act, it was a gimmick, yes, but who cares? It doesn't make their original message (or the message they send now) any less inspiring. In fact, I think it's even better that two straight girls sing about acceptance of lesbian love.

Excuse me, where is the bad here? Why are we fighting people on our side?

I'm sorry, but your logic does not resemble our earth logic.

x Rage More x

WarriorJudge's picture

With all due respect

You can't compare actresses who play lesbians in a TV show to two pop stars posing as lesbians.

When I watch a "the L word" I know that most of the actresses aren't gay. I, as I'm sure most people who watch TV, know the difference between an actor and the character he or she portrays on screen. That's not really "Gay for pay".

When tatu started their career they pretended to be gay and deceived their audience that they were lovers -- it did not start off as a gimmick, and reading interviews with them in the media back then, I thought that they were gay because they said they were.

I was never their fan, and to be honest, I judge art by its merits and not by the sexual orientation of its creator.

Still, I'm sure that a lot of people bought into their act and adored them out of the belief that they were gay.

Pretending to be gay when you're not just to boost your career is gay for pay, and I don’t care for it. Tatu are NOT on "My side" -- they are on their bank accounts' side"

Persephone's Nautical Nun's picture

Actually, it was always

Actually, it was always intended as a gimmick. These girls didn't even know the other existed before becoming tATu. They had to audition for that. The idea of a couple of lesbian pop stars was actually the producer, Ivan Shapovalov's idea.

Also worth noting is that when the girls left him, they decided to slowly break away from that lesbian image that he so doggedly drudged up for them.

But, do try to keep in mind that they were under contract the whole time they were playing into the gimmick.

Hmm... sounds like another form of media we're all familiar with...

I still don't see how it's different from actresses playing gay. People differentiate between real life and actresses, that's cool. Is there some block that keeps them from realizing that performers (all performers) put on an archetype on stage? Do people generally really think that what they see a musician do onstage is the equivelant of who they really are as a person?

Because if that's the case, I just lost what little respect I still had for the population.

Now, am I a fan? Not as a general rule. All their songs sound the same. I just think this hatred of tATu that's running rampant just because they're not really gay is a little, well... not all together thought out.

Well if actresses did not

Well if actresses did not want to play gay characters we wouldnt have gay shows on TV in first place :P

While I was glad that Ellen

While I was glad that Ellen brought up gay marriage with McCain, I felt disappointed that she didn't ask him why he believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Apparently he is not in favor of civil unions either. I wish she would have asked a follow up question or two. She could have easily done it in a "respectful" way.
Greylin's picture

I can only guess that McCain...

felt that marriage is only between a man and a woman because he was taught that all his life. In fact I have heard a minority in our community like 10 years ago saying things like: why subscribe to the hetero institutions, do our own thing, start our own tradition, etc.

Whether I agree with him or not, he is one of the very few politicians out there that I felt had a lot of integrity. It amazed me that he won the nomination without the conservatives in his party and when his people did try to pander to the conservatives, they did it clumsily. He does not come off as a homophobic person to me, just an older guy who has not changed his mind about what marriage could be. He probably pissed off loads of ultra-conservatives in this interview just for wishing Ellen every happiness.

I think Ellen handled the interview perfectly. I know that there will be conservatives out there thinking that she was brow-beating him. No doubt she could have done it in a respectful way, but she has never really interviewed anyone in depth like that and would not be consistent with her style.

I wish Oprah could interview all the candidates and ask them the question why they don't support gay marriages and get them like she got the guy who wrote the thousand pieces book.

Callie & Erica FTW!

I have very little time right now, so I'll read the rest of BLWE later, but for now I just want to say: CALLIE & ERICA! =D *happy dance*

That made my day =) I can't wait to see that scene.
And Sarah, I'm with you...hopefully they'll engage in an actual relationship, without one becoming a murderer or anything else that tears them apart.

Edit: Ok, so now I've read it all AND I've seen the scene =D
I thought the acting on Sara Ramirez part was phenomenal. SO good. And of course it was just a really sweet, great scene =)

Also, I have a feeling that the only reason McCain is against gay marriage is because he would lose almost all his voters. When he answered Ellen, he couldn't even look at her. And his arguments against it didn't make much sense to me (the again...anti-gay marriage arguments never make sense to me. They are just not logical).

And last but not least, you guys all look GREAT in those pictures. The one of Dara&Karman is my favourite =).

Maybe It's Better For...

Ignorance to be aired out from a highly overrated newspaper like The New York Times. When someone reads those half-baked questions and Cynthia Nixon's  responses. Maybe the readers will go hmmm. Think about how the questions and answers are a train wreck waiting to happen and it did on NYT's rails.

Thanks for bringing up Purple Panties,Trish. Zane is like the most freakin popular erotica writer right now. Black erotic book industry as I had found out last year is a billion dollar industry. Oh, one of my myspace (friend) writer's Jolie Du Pre hasa  story in that collection. She's the bisexual WoC who  edited Iridescence,a collective short story erotica by womyn of color. Also Curve magazine did a review of Iridescence and gave it a good review.

I'm glad Ellen's making waves.

Go Ellen!

I feel a change is a-comin' with gay marriage in the U.S. and it is starting with Ellen's increased visibility as LGBT spokeswoman and her daringness to address these issues with McCain in such a non hard-hitting forum.
H.'s picture

oh my

"Right on with not wearing women's shoes! They're totally uncomfortable anyway!"

Couldn't agree more! I have so many issues with women's footwear. Most of them span from my best friend. I spend my life in converse and vans, and i have happy, happy feet. They're always warm and well cushioned, and my shoes last me an age. My friend however, must go through about 4 pairs of shoes a month. She's ridiculous. She goes out and buys all these lovely little pretty dolly shoes and heels, then she steps one foot out the door and they're ruined. Holed to death or the heel's snapped off. And then, in the unlikely event that her shoes actually last her for an evening, by the end of the night she's whining about how much her feet hurt, how she's sure she's got blisters and cuts, and will i carry her. It baffles me. I'm like woman, just buy some bog-standard, normal, comfortable shoes.

Rant over :)

That aint no Etch-a-Sketch...

Lafitte's picture

Is it the lab coat? The stethoscope? The scrubs?

What is it with lesbians and doctor shows? Not that I'm complaining, but it seems like it's a worldwide trend, what with Grey's Anatomy, All Saints, and the Esther/Maca drama on Hospital General. It's almost passing the lesbian/cop pairing, which is also pretty gay no matter what country you watch TV in.

Proof: on a TV show called RIS, Police Scientifique (the French version of CSI), there's already been an episode with a lesbian forensic intern turning down the advances of the resident CSI flyboy (apparently a necessary character in such shows). More recently, actress Claudia Tagbo announced in the gay magazine Têtu that her police lieutenant character is going to come out next season, as a lesbian raising a daughter with her girlfriend/partner. Here's the link, in French only:

http://www.tetu.com/rubrique/infos/infos_detail.php?id_news=12531

Now if the original CSI would just follow their lead! I vote for bringing back Sara and having her hook up with the blonde detective instead of Grissom...hell, any woman instead of Grissom...

Callie and Hahn a let down

Don't get me wrong...I am ecstatic that there is a lesbian storyline on network tv. But am I the only one who found both kisses rather ho-hum? I don't feel any chemistry between the two, and they seemed uncomfortable with the smooching scenes.

I guess it's better than nothing.

The backlash begins

Dropping around the web it's interesting to see the backlash on Callie/Hahn begin.  Tvguide.com is filled with people going off on the gay Agenda.  I say let them keep hating on it.  Knowing the way Shonda has spoken in the past about plots me thinks the more backlash the more she will push the coupling forward.

I love that they have met with Glaad and I adore this complicated story.  I just hope we see more of them spending time together next season because the lead up was always very one sided for the audience this season.

Oh and on another note - did anyone see Taylor Swift on Ellen yesterday? (it was the John McCain episode) They had a young woman interviewing folks at the CMA's and Taylor spoke on how she cried when she learned of Ellen's engagement.  In country music (as one who has circled that industry ever so often) having her say that is HUGE.  Taylor is a posed and lovely young person whose support is incredible considering the politics that Country Music play.

Wouldn't it be fun if Ellen

Wouldn't it be fun if Ellen was president? She'd sarcasm homophobic parties to death, create the Adopt-A-Puppy Day, throw in some laws forbidding lesbian-for-ratings stunts, include lesbian erotica in sexual education literature, allow multiple votes in the PETA thing, make a paper AND plastic option, end famine and war... maybe.

Ah well...

I watch Ellen daily, and I was so happy to watch the interview with McCain... and I was proud of Ellen for speaking up and speaking out for the LGBT community. We need more people like her. I, too, am disappointed that there aren't any candidates who support gay marriage in this upcoming election.

Also excited that Grey's went through with the storyline, and hope that it continues tastefully decently through next season.

Loved the pictures from the NNN Awards and the NYC meet & greet.

And I'm right there with the no-girl-shoes attitude... they're so uncomfortable.

As always, thanks for B.L.W.E.!

best week ever

quick notes-Ellen is obviously amazing. Much love to her, she's very diplomatic and clearly smart. Also...You and I looks terrible but I never expected it to look good because I find Tatu very tacky themselves. I won't even comment on Mischa Barton's role because she seems to choose bad roles anyways. Points to the erotic writer who told people to basically get over it. Personally I don't read erotica but good for her to say point blankly that it shouldn't offend people.
