Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (May 8, 2009)

LESBIAN-ISH QUOTE OF THE WEEK NO. 2
"When it comes to marriage, you know, I think that civil rights need to be for all."

— Singer and Mormon icon Marie Osmond in a radio interview in which she discussed her love and support of her lesbian daughter and her own position on gay marriage.

PREPPING FOR THE HOT 100
The AfterEllen.com Hot 100 will be published on Monday, and I thought I'd address in advance a few of the questions and issues that tend to come up every year.

Diversity. The people who most often come to mind when you're voting in polls like the Hot 100 are the people you see on TV and at the movies, because these mediums make them larger than life, persistently visible, and memorable. Since TV and movies are still dominated by white, straight women (and men, but that's not relevant here), so is our list, and similar lists in magazines like People and Maxim.

The number of women of color and out gay/bi women on the Hot 100 this year is about the same as last year (20% to 25%). Yes, it should be higher — especially for women of color — but please remember that this list was chosen by readers, not staff, and it's a direct reflection of the fact that we live in a world dominated by images of white, straight women (and men). That's one of the reasons we added the Top 10 Hottest Women of Color, Out Women, and Women over 40 lists this year (and why this site exists) — to draw attention to those who don't tend to get enough mainstream media coverage.

In other words: the lack of diversity sucks, but we're doing what we can to try to make things a little better.

Recognizability and Predictability. We have a global readership with wildly divergent tastes, and over 150,000 votes cast this year. This means women who seem no-brainers to you to make the list may not make it, and there may be women on the list you don't recognize (we've tried to introduce you to some of them in our Hot 100 Preview posts).

Also keep in mind that 95% of those who voted did not post their nominees on the site for all to see, so you shouldn't use the names listed in the comments as strong indicators of whether (or where) someone will end up on the final list.

Videos. We're more short-staffed this year than last, so we're not doing any Hot 100 videos this year, unfortunately. But look for a discussion of the winners in next Tuesday's episode of Gal Pals!

Photos. It's actually very difficult to find good photos of 100+ women that meet our requirements, which are: Photos should be as recent as possible (i.e. within the last year); preferably from photoshoots or a red carpet; sexy but not in a porn-magazine-pose way; and — for actresses — pictures of themselves as themselves, not in character. The photos also need to be least 450 pixels wide.

That rules out a lot of photos, and we have a very limited selection to choose from for many of the women on the list, especially those actresses who haven't done many photoshoots (e.g. Gabrielle Christian). So occasionally we had to make exceptions to our own rules and choose older photos, or less sexier ones, etc. Please keep all this in mind if, for example, you don't think Rose Rollins looks butch enough in her photo (that's not how she presents herself in real life), or Meryl Streep looks sexy enough in her photo (she hasn't done a photoshoot in awhile).

Also, if anyone has a good, sexy, recent photo of Home and Away star Esther Anderson that is over 450 pixels wide, please send it to me at afterellentips@gmail.com! (That woman wins the award for Hardest Woman to Find a Decent Large Photo Of!) Friday Update: I've now been deluged with good photos of Esther, so you can stop sending them. Thanks everyone for the help!

Now that we have all the rules, reminders, and explanations out of the way, I'll give you a some good news to chew on over the weekend: five of this year's top 10 women are openly gay or bisexual, and only one of these women was in the top 10 last year.

Leave your guesses in the comments!

Bummer about the not in a

Bummer about the not in a porn-magazine-pose way.

I had no idea this site was that big, 150,000.

I watched a few clips of Otalia on youtube last week, because I saw it everywhere on this site. I couldn't get into it, as hot as Natalia was, even though I think she's pregnant. I'm not hating in the least, to each her own. It reminds me of Bianca and Maggie, with the anticipation and build-up. As much as I had invested in those characters, I get it. I just thought it was more, with all the hype.

Why so little coverage, AE?

"Sweden and the state of Maine now allow same-sex marriage!"

Why is this amazingly exciting piece of legal news condensed into a one-liner at the bottom of the article?! Are you writing a larger piece on the development of same-sex legal rights throughout US States and the world to be published later, or have you consciously decided to publish only entertainment-related articles and ignore legal matters?

Would be nice to see them covered, especially given the progress that pro-gay marriage legislators have been making recently!

Apart from that, great article as usual, I love reading these.

Not a political site

The site is about "News, Reviews, and Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual Women in Entertainment and the Media."

It's an entertainment site.  I do appreciate that she puts other important news in as one-liners like that, and the forums are often used for people to talk about other non-entertainment issues, but it's not a news and legal site.

I'm sure there are plenty of standard gay websites out there with plenty of pieces about the development of same-sex legal rights in the US and the world.

Can't wait for the Hot100, although nobody I voted for has appeared in the previews yet...so I'm crossing my fingers that my votes were just obvious ones that you didn't feel the need to introduce us to.

Sarah - I think the reason people want a top-of-the-page link to go on to the next page is because so many of the pages in the BLWE are old news if you read the site often.  Maybe if you could put all the NEW ones first, and then the old ones, so that we'd know that once we got to an old one, we could stop reading?  I understand why you include the old stuff, but it is kind of a pain for us to sort through what we've read before and what not, so maybe if it was kind of separated that would be a compromise.

Greek new storyline

I'm surprised you guys haven't even mentioned the plot of this week's episode of Greek. It started out kind of straight-male pandery (bachelorette party with a dare to kiss a girl) but when the bachelorette refused, Rebecca (one of the more interesting characters on the show) agreed and leaned over to kiss the very alluring new addition to the show. Later one, Rebecca learned the girl she kissed was gay, and she begins to think about how much she liked the kiss etc. They ended the ep with a tentative date, and the handling of it was quite nice, I thought (after the sophomorish beginning.) So did nobody hear about it, or has it not developed far enough to be covered, or...?

Greek goes Gay

Ahh I loved the episode!! I don't watch it but my brother watched it and when he'd finished he was like, you gotta watch this!

But yeah I thought they handled it really well - the gay character was well-adjusted (though you could kinda tell she was gay, I thought?), and Rebecca's interest wasn't just another bicuriosity it seemed. I'm so watching next week.

I love you, Sarah!

As always, an informative and entertaining BLWE.  A highlight of my week!

I've been submerged in Otaliaitis so this is a much appreciated breather.

Perhaps Otalia will get

Perhaps Otalia will get more physical in their relationship when Jessica Leccia returns from her maternity leave. From the scene in the hospital this week, it looks like Jessica's baby bump gets in the way of intimate hugs much less anything else. I did like that they adjusted for the pregnancy with Olivia hugging Natalia from behind. Nice touch!!

rainbowz895's picture

You said 'baby bump'...lol

How cute...and yea, kinda intrusive on the more physical moments. I know Crystal didn't SAY when in the podcast, but we know its coming. More tenderness, more relationship, more sweetness....and eventually more physical display. I'll wait as long as I have to, Im so caught up in the actual love story, Im not too concerned these days about the kissing scenes!

Los Hombres de Paco

Thanks for a great BLWE as always. However, I do have a small complain. Considering the kind of scene we were delighted with this week in LHDP I was definitely hoping for more than a "things heat up" comment coverage. Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt we see things like that in every other show (other than the l-word) or in every other LHDP episode for that matter. Guess I was expecting the scene to be there, maybe a pic or two at least..oh well.

Btw, next episode won't air next week but the week after.

"Que quiero decir que toquetear a una mujer no es que sea malo...sobretodo si está viva!"

femlesh's picture

Really? No Pepsi next week?

Damnit! I was so hoping for more stuff like this week. That was just... you are right about the pictures.

I bet Laura Sanchez is way up this years list. Maybe even top 10?!

Better Off Ted

I thought that the finale was the best episode. It was refreshing to see the characters actually show some emotion and humanity and have some actual dialogue instead of the regular, non-stop, machine-like one-liners.

I really hope the show gets renewed and if not, that we'll at least be able to see the five episodes they taped.

Ruby Rose

Did none of you Aussies notice the photo of Ruby on the first page? While I think Esther Anderson is a great pick, how about a real lesbian who's gorgeous and proud? Did you see Ruby hosting the Mardi Gras parade? She was really touched. I can remember my first Mardi Gras. You suddenly realise you're a part of something much bigger than you thought. I wish there was a role model like Ruby when I was growing up. She was pretty funny in the toilet queue at the Logies, too!
oscartg's picture

Well

How do we know that Ruby Rose wasn't in the Top 100 anyway, its not all been revealed.
slayersl's picture

hot 100 list

it kind of sucks that ruby is 96, compared to esther at 61. i mean, esther is awesome, and i love that she is at 61, but ruby should have made it to the top 50 at least, as a newcomer also. she is out, proud, and a role model for her generation.

Otalia

I think a lot of viewers wanting more physical intimacy aren't soap fans.

Soaps as a rule (in US) make you wait for EVERYTHING.

The writers of GL are taking their time with this story...and have been for over a year.  I think it realy cheapens the relationship that's been building to demand the characters get it on when they're obviously working through a lot of stuff.

It might not be realistic in YOUR opinion, but it is realistic to the SL.

I love that the writers are taking the time to explore the characters feelings...plus anyone who knows anything about SOAPS knows that Otalia is being built into a super couple ala Luke and Laura from GH back in the day.  That takes time.

Stop worrying and fretting about these two getting their freak on... WHEN it happens it'll be awesome.

Bravo!

Well said, KatsMeow, excellent point!
