News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (April 27, 2007)

ROSIE'S LEAVING THE VIEW. IN RELATED NEWS, THE NUMBER OF LESBIANS ON NETWORK TV WILL DECLINE BY 50%.
If you somehow missed the media frenzy earlier this week, Rosie O'Donnell is leaving The View when her contract expires in June. Scribe Grrrl already blogged about the announcement and the media's take on the whole thing; I'll just add that as controversial as her short reign on the show has been, Rosie brought some much-needed edge to The View and to network TV in general, where people tend to play it all too safe these days. When Barbara Walters and company are looking for her replacement, I hope they'll consider another out outspoken lesbian — maybe Judy Gold? Of course, they'd have to bleep out every other word she said, so maybe she wouldn't work — but it would give Donald Trump something else to complain about!

YOU TAKE THE GOOD, YOU TAKE THE BAD ...
The Big Gay Sketch Show premiered this week, and judging by your comments on our review, y'all didn't love it. My initial reaction to the show was mixed, too, as I mentioned in my column a few weeks ago. But trust me when I say it gets better starting with the next episode, with skits like "Lesbian Speed Dating." I snagged a teaser of the first half of it, so you can check it out for yourself. The concept isn't original, but it's written in a fresh way, and Julie Goldman and Kate McKinnon (the show's two out female cast members) are very funny:

Catch the second half of "Lesbian Speed Dating," and a funny Facts of Life skit (Jo and Blair, finally united!), when the episode airs next Tuesday on Logo (or download it from iTunes).

SHE SAID WHAT?
Jane Lynch guests in the last episode we filmed at Dinah. Need I say more? Watch it now here.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
The Turner Classic Movie channel's upcoming month-long series of films exploring "gays & lesbians as represented in classic Hollywood cinema" doesn't include any films with lesbians. Now that's classic.

Maureen McCormick (Marcia from The Brady Bunch) reveals in her upcoming autobiography that she had a crush on Eve Plumb (Jan).

Although Bravo initially ordered only six episodes of Work Out, they quietly extended the order to eight episodes, so this week was not the season finale, after all. Look for two more episodes and a "reunion" episode on May 15th.

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

Blood Ties

In the books, Vicki's character is straight. Her love interests are Mike and Henry in all 5 books as well as the series. Henry is the bisexual one. Where did this Vicki is bisexual stuff come from? Have they decided to make her bisexual for the series or what?

I know from what I've seen they have completely de-gayed Henry for the show. His male lover Tony was not even cast on the show at all. I do like the show though but I hope they eventually bring back Tony for Henry.

From Tanya Huff (the novelist)

Huff has said in our interview with her (and others, I believe) that the TV writers made Vicki bisexual in the show (even though she's straight in the books), they're just not making it explicit yet b/c they don't want to scare the network. Ditto Henry, who's both bisexual in the books and in the TV show - they're not dealing with that aspect of his sexuality yet, either. It remains to be seen if they will, on both counts.

Thanks!

Sarah, thanks for posting all these clips.  I watched very little TV during the 80's-90's, actually, the 70's too!:)  Lucky for me, since I've been unemployed for a few months and chose to hibernate a bit, I've had plenty to catch up on.....and my waistline shows it too!  I never saw the early Ellen show even tho I was quite gay and I'm just now seeing Dr Weaver on ER for heaven's sake!     I however rarely miss an Ellen talk show episode or The View, or the lovely ladies of Court TV! (I can dream can't I?  So much female brain power on one network makes me weak in the knees!:) Just glad to see the lengthy posting by you here (and your brain power:), it seems you've been missing lately.  Just wanted to say thanks for pointing out these wonderful clips.  So...THANKS!

love smart funny women!  good looks are just gravy:)

Confused..

Hehe Sarah you totally confused me now.. I read the interview and it says:

“It stars a female bisexual private investigator with failing vision and her 450-year-old male bisexual vampire sidekick.”

“But in the television series, the bisexuality of the two main characters may be as invisible as a vampire's reflection in a mirror.”

"How does she feel about the de-queering of Blood Ties? "I think it's unfortunate," she said, "but I also think that, you know, that's the way the cookie crumbles."

It sounds like she was bisexual in the books but not in the tv series? (Btw: as usual, great "best lesbian week ever" :)

Me too

That's why I asked the question because the wording of both articles I read about the show were confusing. I kept thinking you can't de-gay a character that wasn't gay in the first place. If they are making Vicki bisexual for the series that's one thing but saying that she was always bisexual is factually incorrect. I'm glad that was finally cleared up for me.
Sarah Warn's picture

Tanya Huff's comments

I know it wasn't super-clear in the way we wrote up the interview, but she made it clear to us (and we've heard this from other sources) that Vicki and Henry are both bisexual in the TV show (only Henry is bisexual in the books). What she's referring to when she talks about the de-gaying is the fact that they're not planning to make either one's bisexuality explicit on the show for a long time.

Thanks!

Thank you for clearing it up, it makes a lot more sense to me now :) I'll look forward to see how they are going to handle the two characters' bisexuality on the show then (and drool over Cox in the meanwhile).

Laura Dern is awesome, and

Laura Dern is awesome, and Ellen is too.  Watching "The Puppy Episode" is still exhilarating even after watching it a gazillion times over the years.  I will be forever grateful for what Ellen did on her show.  I was just starting to realize I was gay in late '97 (I was 19), and seeing Ellen and Laurie in love and in a real relationship in Season Five was hugely important to me.

(BTW, Lisa Darr, who played Laurie, was on The Office tonight!  Yay!)

I loved watching The Big Gay Sketch Show this week.  I'm sorry to see that there have been a lot of negative comments about it here.  Yes, a couple of the sketches were weak, but I loved the When I Knew bits and the Honeymooners sketch.  And everyone in the cast seems to be really talented (especially that Kate McKinnon). I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the season, and hope it gets renewed. The show, at least from what I've seen so far, is what I want, and need, to see, and what there is so little of on TV - a quality show made from a gay perspective, for gay viewers.  Am I in the minority in wanting and caring about that?

The Big Gay Sketch Show

I thought the first episode of TBGSS was well....mediocre. It had it's good points, but I didn't plan to watch it again. That speed dating sketch was really funny though - so I'm gonna give it another shot :)

It's great to see the puppy episode again, I remember watching it when I was 10 - and everything started to click. Go Ellen!

A thought

You know, I like Laura Dern as much as the next person (Citizen Ruth was great) but I am wondering if the Ellen gig was really the reason for her less then full employment in 1997-98? It's no secret that US ententertainment industry shuns the "older" actresses. At 30ish the roles aren't the same nor are they as prevlient. It's along the lines of to old to be young and to young to be old.

So if you're a straight guy who constantly goes for lesbians...

Wow, Sarah.  Going back to the the puppy ep had me laughing all over again.  But it was so weird thinking.... gee he looks familiar.  Is that a younger, thinner, lighter? HENRY?!  Steven Eckholdt?!  First Ellen, then Tina Kennard.  What's up with him?

Afterellen on the case!

It's great that you're keeping Lynch & the-N's feet to the fire, let's hope it does some good. However, Madison/Spencer? Spadison? Eeeeeeeeeeeew!

They could always get her with Chelsea if the rumors are true and Clay is leaving the show. Then they could jump straight to the lesbian mommies story arc. =)

Seriously though, I do understand if the network was saying you can't show sex with the girls. I can't believe they wouldn't even let them kiss, though. They let them kiss once, where's the harm in having it repeated? Plus, there's another way they could have avoided claims of bias - limit the straight storylines. They didn't need to show as much as they did.

Lesbian Speed Dating, awesome skit!

I actually love the Big Gay Sketch Show so far. There's something wonderful about the way the writers make fun of stereotypes.

50%

"ROSIE'S LEAVING THE VIEW. IN RELATED NEWS, THE NUMBER OF LESBIANS ON NETWORK TV WILL DECLINE BY 50%. "

Oh Sarah. You make my heart smile. And then laugh, hysterically.
When I told this to a coworker, she said, "Except for that one on Fox." My response was, "There's someone gay on FOX?"

Is this true? And where have I been?

Ah, Laura Dern

My dizzy descent  into lesbianism began back when I was 7 and my big brother took me to see Jurassic Park where I first lay eyes upon Dr. Ellie Sattler. That's also when I decided to study zoology under the mistaken assumption that Dr. Ellie was a paleontologist. By the time I finally realised she was a palaeobotanist it was too late... My life would be so different without Laura Dern, and that mistake!

Thanks, Sarah

Amb. Gay 80's V.J. asked me to thank you for the mention and hopes this publicity can spark a dialogue about important issues such as lip-syncing scandals, hairspray shortages and the dangers of slap bracelets.

any opinions on the possible bisexuality of gorgeous lucy liu herself...?

I've always thought that

I've always thought that Lucy Liu is bi. Here is her comment on kissing another woman http://www.clublez.com/movies/lesbian_celebrities/tidbits/lucy_liu.htm
