Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (March 16, 2007)

SHE GETS AROUND. NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
A reader (thanks Elishia!) tipped me off to the very sexy lesbian-themed music video for "I Get Around" from the hot new Canadian band Dragonette. Sadly, lead singer Martina is married to the bass player, Dan, so she's not actually gay in real life. Nor is she a champion tennis player. But the video is hot and pro-lesbian, so I'm willing to overlook that detail.

You kids today with your rock 'n' roll music!

QUEER CENTS AND SENSIBILITY
Worried your girlfriend is just with you for your money? Love Bad Girls but don't want to join Richard Hatch in jail for tax evasion? Then check out queercents.com, a new-ish website founded by a lesbian (all the best ones are, right?) that features gays and lesbians blogging about how to manage your money, with the very funny tagline, "We're here, we're queer, and we're not going shopping without coupons."

There's a little something at QueerCents for everyone, from advice on philanthropy to picking a financial planner to cheating on your taxes. (I don't want to spoil it for you, but they're against it.) My favorite section? Sleeping With Money, devoted to managing money and your romantic relationships.

Sections still reportedly under consideration include You Say "Cheap Date" Like That's a Bad Thing, Lesbians Who Have Money and the Lesbians Who Want to Sleep With Them, and The Helena Peabody Guide to Gambling Your Way to Financial Security.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Itty Bitty Titty Committee won the jury prize for Best Narrative Feature at the SXSW film festival this week.

Nominees for this year's Daytime Emmys were announced this week: The Ellen DeGeneres Show received 12 nominations (including Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Talk Show Host) and The View earned 10. Get all the nominees here.

A closeted lesbian publicist with many secret lovers was one of the murder victims on Fox's Bones this week. Sadly, her list of lovers did not include Emily Deschanel's character.

After 18 years, the Lambda Literary Awards has finally added a bisexual book category. You can see finalists for all the categories here.

Cyndi Lauper will be headlining a national "True Colors" tour this summer to benefit various LGBT organizations; find out more details at truecolorstour.com

The second season of Work Out begins on Tuesday, but you can already download the first new episode for free on iTunes.

There's a new She Said What? episode up now, with guest Ashu Rai, a DJ and party promoter. Watch it here.

Last Monday, we relaunched our Best. Lesbian-ish. Day. Ever. blog on a new server and finally integrated it into the site, so now (1) the pages actually load, for a change and (2) you can comment on the blog posts just like you do articles and forum topics. Plus, now blog posts have tags just like the articles do, so if you read a blog post about, say, Tina Fey and click on the tag "Tina Fey" in the pink box at the bottom of the post, you'll see both articles and blog posts tagged with that term across AfterEllen.com. The most popular blog posts so far this week? Amy Winehouse is just so good, When Idols become insults, and Avril Lavigne wants to be your girlfriend in 7 languages.

We've moved up the time of our AfterEllen.com VIP Cocktail Party at Dinah Shore - it now starts at 8pm on Friday, March 30th, and Maeve Quinlan (South of Nowhere, Girltrash) has joined our list of VIP guests. There'll also be drinks, hordes of women, and a rousing game of pin the tail on the bi-curious woman whose husband thinks she's at a baby shower. Don't miss it!

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

Hey Sarah, not trying to be

Hey Sarah, not trying to be picky but a quick correction - Dragonette is actually Canadian.  Although they are signed to a British label and they have been living over there for almost a year so I can understand the confusion.  Keep up the great work!   We all appreciate it :)

Thanks for letting me know

I fixed it. :) I think it was the British label that confused me - but I should've guessed Dragonette was Canadian, since all the best bands seem to come from up North!

Here's another one.

Here's another one. Shaye

Nikki Wade: You can't leave me like this. This is shit
Helen Stewart: Shit happens.

Sorry, but I choose Dory

Dory is just the most adorable fish ever, so I have to go with her:D

Shaye

The video for Beauty is a tribute to Tara MacLean's sister (one of Shaye singers) who passed away suddenly.  The band Shaye were named after her.

Lambda link

The link to the Lambda site is wrong (it's dated March 3, 2006), I think the correct link is http://www.lambdaliterary.org/awards/current_nominees.html for the nominees and http://www.lambdaliterary.org/awards/current_finalists.html for the finalists.

Has anyone ever actually SEEN the law that says you HAVE to pay an income tax? And how exactly is "income" defined as per the constitution?

The National Archives Experience

At The National Archives Experience site (set up by our govt.) includes text under Article 1, Sections 2, 8 and 9 for example, where you'll find specific information on how our Constitution orig. framed the use of taxes.  There is more information under the Amendments if you want to search around for it, as well as the issue of no taxation w/o representation.  Outside our Constitution, each state then added their own laws regarding taxes.....so they can tax us to death.  Hope that helps you.

This is an excellent site btw for refer. - original text w/ modifications that covers a lot issues:

Lambda Literary

Unless I've gone cross-eyed, I didn't see the bisexual book category anywhere on that list.

Hah!

"There'll also be drinks, hordes of women, and a rousing game of pin the tail on the bi-curious woman who's husband thinks she's at a baby shower."

That sentence made my night!

Is it just me, or...

does Sammy Winward bear an amazing resemblance to a very young Portia DeRossi?  What do other readers think?
nunya's picture

Exactly what I was thinking

I thought the same thing when I first saw that pic...I was like, "A little Portia!"

How can you not know who Marnie Alton is?

She played "laughing girl" on Josie and the pussycats!

Katie Sugden

Okay, here's the thing. Katie Sugden in a bi-curious story line is definitely not a good thing. I really thought that soap writers had learnt by now that turning a character that is known by the public for ages to be straight is not going to make for good telly. Take the disaster that was the Sonia story on Eastenders. And not so long ago the Yasmin - Debbie one on Emmerdale. Sigh... Please can somebody bring back a proper lesbian character, like dear Zoe Tate... And I don't mind whether it is on Emmie, Eastie or Corrie. Although, on second thoughts, I think Coronation Street has a little catching up to do, so yes, let's have one in Wheatherfield! But don't get Maria to suddenly fancy one of the new arrival girls please, that would be sooooo wrong...

magneta lane link and exes & oh's question

Love that magneta lane song! If anyone's interested I found where you can hear the whole thing on their myspace fanpage:  http://www.myspace.com/magnetalanefansite. Do you have more info on exes & oh's? I love the L Word (when I don't totally hate it) but can't wait for something else to watch... When in fall will it be on tv? Which of the lesbians are played by lesbians?

Emmerdale - Katie Sugden - HOAK!

Not sure if it as reached the US shores yet but the whole Katie Sugden, lesbian storyline in the UK soap Emmerdale is a hoak.  Some idiots from the show just threw this into an interview with journalist to see how far they would run with it.  Pretty far seeing as it is on an US website.

Can't say I'm sorry really.  It would have been as meaningless as Marissa's fling in the OC and the mass of other teen lesbian storylines that have flooded the airwaves, meant nothing and lead nowhere.
