Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (March 7, 2008)TWO LESBIANS WALK INTO A BAR... It's a "red carpet/travel" series because they'll be covering both celebrity-type events (parties, fundraisers, and events like Dinah Shore) and travel destinations like Lake Tahoe and Cancun, Mexico. But both types of episodes will feature them interviewing people — gay and straight, famous and not-so-famous — in their humorous, gay, and slightly inappropriate way. In their first episode, Karman and Bridget interview guests at IN magazine's 10th anniversary party in Los Angeles, including actresses Thea Gill and Carlease Burke and radio host Doria Biddle. Go here to watch the first episode now. Unlike the vlogs, which are new every week, we'll probably run new episodes of this series only twice a month or so, depending on what's happening. This weekend, Bridget and Karman are at Lake Tahoe WinterFest (that's a gay and lesbian ski week) shooting their next episode, which will include Karman attempting to snowboard and failing quite spectacularly. Look for that in a week or two. (I know I will!) ATTENTION ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE FILMMAKERS AND TV SHOW CREATORS! We want to use AfterEllen.com as a place to help launch the next 3Way, Time Traveling Lesbian, or You Can't Take Them Anywhere! While we can't give you money to make your series, we can give you a platform to expose it to a large and very passionate fan base. And since our readers also include women who work in the entertainment industry at all different levels, we'll also be giving you the opportunity to showcase your writing/editing/acting skills to women who are in a position to fund your series. Or hire you. You never know what could happen! The deadline for submission is April 15, 2008. We've posted the submission guidelines in the forum, but here are some of the highlights: Your series doesn't have to be big-budget, it just has to be good; it's not limited to Americans — anyone may apply, as long as the series is in English or has English subtitles; and both scripted and unscripted series are eligible. Oh, and obviously, the series should have some lesbian or bisexual women, or a lesbian/bi story line or theme. We'll review all the submissions, and up to three winners will be announced at the Q-Me Con NYC 2008 Women's Summit during the AfterEllen.com-hosted panel, "Alternative Routes: Web & Mobile Distribution Opportunities for Your Queer Content" on Saturday, May 10. For more information about the Q-Me Con NYC 2008 Women's Summit, visit www.qmecon.com. All three winners will have their episodes published weekly on AfterEllen.com, but the Grand Prize Winner will also receive:
This is your opportunity to make the lesbian series you've always wanted to see! With the demise of South of Nowhere, the ending of The L Word either this season or next, and Cashmere Mafia just making lesbian/bi visibility worse (if it even gets renewed), we need to be creating our own entertainment now more than ever. And if you're new to this and have doubts about whether you can make a web series, remember what Margaret Mead said: "Never underestimate the ability of a small group of lesbians to change the world." Or something like that. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Dorothy Snarker's blog won the Lesbian Lifestyle's blog of the year award! A very deserving choice, in our completely unbiased opinion. The savespashley.com campaign kicks off today. There's a new off-Broadway musical debuting that focuses on the relationship between Gertrude Stein and her partner called 27 Rue de Fleurus. In the Life Media is now seeking documentaries about the LGBTQ experience for their 2008 and 2009 seasons. We need more stories for our Dinah Shore improv! Get cracking, all you creative types! The next episode of Cathy DeBuono's vlog What's YOUR Problem? will be posted this afternoon, with guest Jennifer Corday. Bridget has a special guest on Brunch With Bridget this weekend ...
Yes, last weekend when I was in L.A., I finally accepted Bridget's invitation to be a guest on her vlog, and what started out as a conversation reminiscing about our childhoods, ergonomic technology products, and the '80s series Rags to Riches quickly descended into a name-calling session that could only be settled with a Very Special Pillow Fight. Tune in to AfterEllen.com on Sunday morning to watch the downward spiral. That's it for this week! Got the inside scoop on a hot new lesbian/bi actor/musician/TV show/film? Tell us at afterellentips@gmail.com. Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. |

yay
my week is not complete without B.L.W.E...
and Buffy gay!?!?! wow. i don't even know what to say. but i definitely think that faith is super butt-hurt right now. i think willow will have a similar reaction to angel when he found out spike has a soul too.
I just pictured that...
Willow: Looking at the ground, kicking at the dirt. "Well. That's great. Everyone's a lesbian now. You know, I started it... The whole being gay? Before it was all the cool new thing."
Though we choose between reality and madness, it's either sadness or euphoria.
-- Billy Joel
Wow
That was awesome - the comparison with Angel, I can totally see it! But, does it make me a bad lesbian that I don't actually like that Buffy slept with a girl? I'm kinda with Willow - it was her thing. And I really don't like straight girls "experimenting" and liking it - it's kinda like saying well, you can choose who to have sex with. When I know lots of lesbians who just don't think sex with men is satisfying, and it's kind of the same thing.
They need to have Willow sleeping witha girl...preferably not Kennedy...
Or Faith. Come on, of those two, who was gay? Not Buffy...and yeah I kinda feel bad for her now.
Choose choice!
I certainly hope people can choose who they want to have sex with- I wouldn't want it to be any one else's choice!
Seriously though, why put a 'straight' person in a box and say they can't change? Perhaps she thought she was a Kinsey 0 but has evolved to a Kinsey 1 or something.
It's irrelevant, really- shouldn't people be able to choose their own sexual partners without having to account for them to other people? Isn't that what we're fighting for?
Maybe Faith has a chance of
I can't wait for the new
I can't wait for the new BWB! I'm fairly confident in Bridget's kick-arse pillow fighting ability, but will she let Sarah win, with her being the boss and all?
I definately did not see the Buffy thing coming, but I am super excited for when the gn comes out!
I got so excited about Bridget and Buffy that I completely forgot everything else I was going to write... damn!
Why am I not at true colors right now?
The True Colors line-up is genius.
Commitment Ceremony is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. Kate and Julie can do no wrong in my opinion.
*Beams*
I love this site. :o)
Agreed.
I was just thinking the same thing, AJ. I come into work every morning with a cup of coffee and a little bit of breakfast, and I happily sit at my computer reading/watching the new content of AE to start my day, and I think, "This is great." Fridays are definitely my new favorite day of the week: a start to the weekend, BLWE, AND Cathy's vlog? Can't wait for it this afternoon!
Regarding the Shot at Love mess:
I admit that it has become a guilty pleasure of mine. I have always indulged myself a little too much in reality-tv dramas; add a few lesbians and I'm bound to be dragged into it. But I am also FULLY AWARE of all the negative stereotypes and impressions that the show projects. That said, I think it is IMPERATIVE for AE to continue to FULLY COVER the show. The tagline for this site, after all, is "News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual Women in Entertainment and the Media." No where in there does it say anything about "Entertainment We Like" or "Entertainment That Paints a Pretty Picture of Our Lives." As Sarah said, since EVERYONE ELSE will also be covering the show, I don't think AE's coverage will do anything to further popularize the show, but rather be the voice out there that calls attention to all the problems it creates, rather than simply discussing the latest hair-pulling fight at elimination. AE has the unique oppurtunity to use the platform it has created for itself to speak out against the negativity in the show. To do any less would be a disservice to the work that's been done to get "us" this far.
Finally, regarding "Commitment Ceremony," I must quote the goddess that is Sarah Warn by reiterating:
"GOD BLESS LESBIANS WITH TOO MUCH FREE TIME."
Happy weekending everyone!

...
I was originally going to vote for don't cover it, but this makes much more sense. I'm all for this.
*patiently waiting for Sunday's Brunch w/ Bridget* and by patiently, I mean I want to see it nowwwwwwwww!
ditto
Absolutely!
This is really the best lesbian week
First Buffy sleeps with a girl, regardless the label that´s pretty cool.
Then a new crazy, funny vlog with Bridget and Karman! (It was awesome, thank you for coming up with it Sarah)
It´s really cool that you are giving an incredible opportunity to find the next great lesbian/bi web series.
Congrats to Dorothy Snarker on the award! Finally you are going to appear in BwB! And Cathy´s vlog was really missed today, good to know it´ll be on soon!
I couldn't have said it better
I think we all can't thank Sarah enough for all the great things she does, including this new contest. Sarah - you rock!!!!
I loved the rap song, very entertaining!!
"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from." ~ Jodie Foster
:D
As if Fluffy didn't have enough problems.
Amen.
Actually, I switched from French to Spanish because I can't roll my Rs.
That picture of you and Bridget looks like sitcom where you're the lesbian lathario and it is the morning after you sleeping with her but she already has a girlfriend.(best run-on ever!)
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
*g*
He can't wait for Brunch with Bridget. Looks like fun.

Sarah on BWB
Kate & Julie's viedo unavailable?
youtube link
I think this is the same video that's been on youtube since last July. I mean, it starts off the same, and it has the same title. I don't know if it's been redone, but here's the link to the youtube version.

Yeah, I think this the same.
NOOOOOOOOOO! D:
And then there's the contest. Know that feeling when something comes along, that would be THE opportunity you'd take in a heartbeat if the other obligations in your life wouldn't make it time-wise impossible for you to participate (time-wise and such)? Thought so. I need a drink. :(
(make that a barrel)
But I'm curious if Mr. Wheedon will actually explore the path of "what would Faith say to that"...
:P
Simple equation:
Buffy + Gay = AWESOME!!!
Thanks for this great week Sarah!!!
Always (with my companion, a cup of coffee) gets me through the last day of the week
:]
Not to be picky...
Errr, you do realise your closing dates for the Web Series thingy is last year? I hate being the pointer outer of itty biddy mistakes, but if I don't it'll drive me nuts, and I'll keep staring at it, and I'll never get any work done today, and the stock markets don't take a break coz I'm not paying attention!!
I'm such a loser! :(
Helping is good :)
Nothing wrong with tellin' the teacher she forgot to carry the one.
Oops!
Buffy!!
Buffy slept with a woman!! I love this comic *_* Thanks Drew Goddard *_*
And this episode of BWB seems like a lot of fun, can't wait to see it!
Thanks again for the great work Sarah!
Brilliant!
New Lesbian/Bi Web Series
Is it only going to be reviewed by the 'people in charge' or does the public get a vote as well? (Not that all previous VLOGS were bad decisions, I was just wondering if the public gets 'a vote' as well) Or is that a to big of a thing to do?
Anyways, great B.L.W.E. as always. And FINALLY miss Sarah is on BWB. I was wondering when the heck that was going to happen!
The Way The Cookie Crumbles
No Borders AllowedSaffron Burrows
Great BLWE as always Sarah, just wanted to say that I saw Saffron Burrows film "The Bank Job" this week and actually really enjoyed it, despite my initial reservations because it also featured Jason Statham (who I think is the Britsh version of Vin Diesel!) Anyway, Saffron is pretty good in it and also pretty hot, although she plays a straight character this time. There is also an appearance by Keeley Hawes no less, although don't think the blonde wig does anything for her at all! The only criticism my g/f had was that one of the cars in the film was a British 1973 registration and the film was supposedly set in 1971! Continuity anyone? Yes, I agreed - it takes a certain type of geekyness to notice such things, but thats one of the things I love about her!
The Tila Thing
I voted in the poll but, I wanted to add something. I love the recap simply because Karman writes it (she's not busy with anything else, is she?). I don't think it's giving the show too much attention. I think it's making fun of the show, which is very necessary. If someone wants to read it they can, if they don't... In the end it's still about lesbian/bi entertainment. And, for better or for worse (way worse), Tila's the mainstream option. I think I just gagged a little.
Anywho, thank you for teaming up Bridget and Karman again. I think I sense a new favorite
blogvlogpodcast. And, last week I was just thinking you (Sarah) should get in bed with Bridget. Yay! Can't wait for what is sure to be the funniest Brunch yet.
~It means pride.~
yes
what she said.
i love reading the recaps. but i'm a recap slut. or a snark slut. either way. i agree, read or don't read but don't punish us readers!
Wow, a web series contest? Wicked cool.
:) What the frickin frack?
Haven't got my Buffy comic yet (picked the slowest mail delivery, I really need to change that) but I am so anxious. So loving series 8, but I gotta say I did not see this coming, and yet ... I did.
Another Vlog? Bridget and Karmen? Hell Mothaf-cking Yeah! thank you AE. Off to watch now.
"I don't kiss girls who wear doilies"
Well Buffy never truely
Well Buffy never truely been labeled. She has slept with two dead guys one supersolder and a college jerk.
In the last issue Buffy knew that the girl had a crush on her and seemed totally cool with it in fact she only gave her a warning that those close to her tend to get hurt which to me ment that she was totally open to the idea of letter her get close to her (heart). Still this news blew my mind totally.

"I didn't do enough things! You did more things than me!"
That is so adorably familiar...
...and how great was Satsu's response:
"And you let me. You were amazing."
*heart flutters*

That is my absolute favorite line in the whole scene.
question about the tila poll choices
Hey, where do I sign up?
"Think Sideways"
Cellist are hot!
because they passionately play an instrument between their legs, one just cna't help wishing they were the one being played. I went to college with the sexiest musician, and I totally would've let her cary me around in a big case most of the time, if I got to send a few hours between her thighs being plucked by her fingers... (because she's a funky cello plucker- even hotter!)
see her website here: www.lindsaymac.com
The new Bridget and Karman show makes me think of the time my college friend Jill and I conducted a "Gay Census" running from car to car that was stuck at the border crossing back to the US after Montreal Pride. I guess only easy going straights go to Montreal during Pride weekend, because when we asked the gay percentage in each car, no one freaked the heck out. I suggest they use that question (in well-populated and lit areas).
BLWE
Its always better the weeks that Sarah does it.... maybe the fact that Ive been reading it for a long time now....
Sarah we miss you!!! Hope everything is ok for Lori, cant wait for the next HTTWAGI and SMMWT!
Buffy
There's a pretty good interview with Joss about this issue and the Buffy comic in general on Newsarama:

Adding Two Cents about the Buffster
I read way too many periodicals so I was kind of pissy when I read the NY Times and they didn't give the courtesy of letting me know it was a SPOILER! Sheesh! All I saw was Buffy's name and I got exciting about thinking that Joss was ready to make another movie. Wrong! I was deprived of my moment of Zen.
But it's all good, I still squealed! Buffy and Satsu, saw it coming. What's that Pylean word that Fred and Lorne like to call it when two soldiers meet in battle and recognize each other's mutual fate? Ah yes, Kherumption.

Buffy Comics
YES, please give a little warning
A little spoiler warning would sure be nice. It was right there on the main page, so I couldn't even pretend not to see it!
That's not so much to ask, I think :)
Still, can't wait to read the whole issue!
WTF!! You totally spoiled this issue of BtVS for me!!
A Very Interesting Week...No?
Well, like a lot of people out there...I honestly didn't see the "Buffy" storyline progressing in that direction, even after the revelation last issue...It must fullfill the hopes and dreams of a lot of fanfic writers out there...Still, considering it's Whedon...We all know exactly how the story will end...Poor li'l Satsu the Slayer. :(
And, Sarah...Demise is hardly the word any of us would use in regards to "South Of Nowhere"...Not even close! Nothing is "demised"...NOT YET!!!
"Is it just me, or is there
"Is it just me, or is there something sexy about a woman and a cello?"
Yes! My ideal woman would be a ginger cellist. (Not to narrow the field or anything)
It's not just you guys...
It's so not just you and Sarah.
Also, I believe Kate McKinnon plays the cello, one more reason for me to adore her.
