Madonna adds "director" to her resume with “Filth and Wisdom”

Look up "re-invention" in the pop culture dictionary and you'll see a picture of Madonna. For more than two decades, she has consistently dominated the Billboard charts, from her '80s-dance-pop debut Like a Virgin to the Timbaland-produced Hard Candy (2008). But she's done more than just sing: She's acted (winning a Golden Globe for Evita), published a book (a collection of photographs called Sex, if you were wondering), become a pseudo-Brit (first she picked up the fake accent; now she actually lives there), smooched Britney Spears, built an orphanage, adopted an African baby — you get the idea.

With that in mind, it's hard to imagine anything the woman hasn't done (besides sleep). But distressingly enough, there was a gap in her entertainment industry résumé: film director. Not a problem. Sometime this year, between recording tracks for her new CD, preparing for her tour and taking her kids to Kabbalah services, Madonna made a movie without anyone knowing it. It's called Filth and Wisdom, and the trailer has just been released.

What's that you say? You don't care? Oh, but Madonna directed it, and you've seen her music videos (fun for the whole family!). You've at least got to be curious. Go on, sneak a peek.

Who knew the Queen of Pop could make something so indie-ish? It's got a quirky plot (three London flatmates — a Ukrainian immigrant, a ballerina and a pharmacist — delve into morally questionable behavior to make the money they need to finance their dreams), a quirky leading actor (Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz, recently seen in Everything Is Illuminated) and heck, it even features a quirky mustache (which, I'm pleased to report, Hutz also sports in real life). We may not have a new cult classic on our hands here, but then again it probably wouldn't be the worst 80 minutes of your life.

What do you think? Will Filth and Wisdom turn out to be fantastic or forgettable? Should Guy Ritchie be worried, or does he still wear the director’s hat in the relationship?

    Sex is not her only

Sex is not her only book.

She has also published a number of children's books. :)

    Exactly!

Thank you Pudge. I was gonna say that too.

I like your little profile pic, by the way. I have only seen an episode with the cat lady once, but she was definitely memorable.

    No problem. :) I've been

    No problem. :)

I've been a Madonna fan my entire life so I can't help but point out other things she's done.

The cat lady is the best!! I particularly enjoy when Marge is talking to her and she seems okay..and Marge points out that her "pills" are just candy..and the lady starts shrieking and winging cats around again. :) I'm a child at heart. Can't help but laugh every single time.

    Okay.. has anyone seen

Okay.. has anyone seen 'wristcutters - a love story'? Theres a guy in there who is also in a band in the movie.. the character is played by Shea Whigham.. and he has the exact same accent and I believe even a handlebar mustache too. So when I watched this trailer I just went 'meh copycat'.
    Nunzilla's picture

    what?

That character is BASED off of Eugene Hutz. He is essentially playing himself in this new flick. Shea Whigham is the copycat. Or in this case, just trying to embody the real man.

I for one will be watching it as soon as I can. I love Gogol Bordello but also think Eugene has acting potential. And is generally awesome. Ahem.

To add on to what nunzilla

To add on to what nunzilla said, the role in Wristcutters was written specifically for Eugene Hutz, but then scheduling conflicts prevented him from being able to do it. That's when they called in the other guy to do the acting, but the music in the film is still Gogol Bordello :)

    Ooooh.. Maddie.. I'm SO in!

Ooooh.. Maddie.. I'm SO in! I kiss the ground Madonna walks on... well, I wish.

p.s. For a second there, I thought the actress who plays the ballerina was Emily Blunt!!! It was her voice I think.

    naomily's picture

    of course, madonna directed it,.

    i definitely watch this movie,.=)

    Why not?! Go on Madgerlicious!

I think that even if this venture actually turns out to be quite a success for Madonna critics are still going to find a way of panning it. If shes willling to try and do something different ( and she always is) then people and myself should watch it with an open mind. On a personal level, i think she will actually be a very good director!

If everyone was born with as much balls as her the world would be a very differnt place!

    Gotta love the Ho!

    Such a big fan

    He is such a mentalist

    hmmm

I love hutz and I love gogol boredello's music, but I don't know if I can take another movie based around his 'character' (I know this one's a little different) and music. (Wristcutters almost ruined 'Through the roof and underground' for me)

However, I will give this one a try

    itsonlymagic's picture
