"Whip It!" will be released in October

It's not even summer and I was already anticipating next fall because that's when Jennifer's Body will be in theaters.

Yes, I still want to see the Diablo Cody-penned sexy horror film, despite star Megan Fox's recent, uh, misstep.

And now I have even more reason to look forward to leaves on trees: Whip It! has been given an October release date.

Ellen Page with the L.A. Derby Dolls' Axes of Evil

I've been patiently awaiting official news on the roller derby film starring Ellen Page since I first heard it was even in the works. And since she's become a huge fan of derby and seen out at bouts and talking it up in interviews, I have a feeling watching her around the rink is going to be extremely fun.

On October 9, Drew Barrymore's directorial debut will be in theaters nationwide through Fox Searchlight and Barrymore's production company, Flower Films. Filmed partly in both Michigan and Texas, the movie is based in Austin, and also stars Juliette Lewis, Zoe Bell and Kristen Wiig as derby broads.

I can't wait to see how this film turned out. Will you be marking the release date on your calendar?

Roller Derby?

What´s Roller Derby?

Derby Girl

I can't tell if you're joking or not, but you can read the book that the movie is based upon. It's called Derby Girl by Shauna Cross. I highly recommend.

Also, there was a reality show on A&E that you buy on DVD or rent from Netflix called Rollergirls. Lots of hot tattooed chicks beating the snot out of each other on roller skates. It's every dykes dream (or at least mine = )

Joking?

Why should I be joking? I´m from Sweden and have never heard of Roller Derby before.  And I really don´t get the point of the game after reading a little bit about it. 2players treis to pass all the others, and one passed person equals one point? Is that right? And the person who leads can stop the game at any time placing her hand on her hip? So what is the meaning behind the game? Are there any top-score? And how long is an match?
MissZabone's picture

Don't Hate...

Celebrate!

And if you aren't into Derby that's cool. But don't hate...seriously...there's enough bad energy in the world already = )

Madelene's picture

?

Are you joking!? I just don´t understand the rules of the game and what the meaning of the game is. But if you could explain maybe I would love it and not "hate" like you said...

And the bad energy comes from USA;)(that was a joke)

Eris_of_Myth's picture

It's OK

Roller Derby is awesome. Try to find something on YouTube if you still don't understand what's going on, hon. It's brutal, it's raw and overall it's hilarious and fun to watch. It's just entertainment.

Sorry for the gravity...

.

Haha I´ve watch some videos and I still don´t get the point of the game:) But I guess it´s like baseball and american football, the only ones that enyoys and understand it are the americans:D And are they really punching eachother? Because to me it´s look like wrestling on rollerblades. But one the other hand the only ones who understands wrestling are the americans aswell:)
Eris_of_Myth's picture

It's actually real

Roller Derby is real, and wrestling is acting. You can't fake the bruises and broken bones these girls get, but once they are healed (sort of), they are back out on the flat rink, kicking more ass. And the roller Derby girls do this for a hobby. They have regular jobs during the day, and/or have families. To be honest, they deserve the money and fame the faking wrestlers get!!

Waiting for Whip It!

Roller Derby. Hmmm, am not familiar with the term either, but isn't it like where you rollerskate 'round in a ring of some sorts? Like that one ubercute scene in Monster? :D ... *ponders*

Anyway, YES! I am always looking forward to some more of that Ellen Page movie magic. Her talent never fails to amaze me.

Get very excited...

I love Roller Derby it is epic!

This movie is going to be good reguardless because it has Ellen Paige in it and as long as I get to stare at her for 90 minutes it's all good...but seriously she tends only to do films with half decent scripts so my expectations are pretty decent

Roller Derby

Roller Derby is a fake sport, similar to pro wrestling, in which an extravagant theater of pain, violence, heroism and villainy is played out in a small ring on roller skates.  There are teams, and (supposedly) rules, but no one is paying much attention to the score, and mostly what happens is that the players pretend to beat one another up.  It was on TV occasionally in my youth (the 1960s), then seemed to disappear, and in recent years has had an ironic, hipster revival.
Andra8's picture

Disagree

Maybe some teams camp it up, but the roller derby matches I have been to have meshed serious athletics with a very accepting, very gay and family friendly good time.   In the games I have watched, the players were too focused on the game to stage fights.  Instead that sort of thing is left to the mascots.

And the movie is going to be set in Austin, which has some really strong teams.  I am so looking forward to this movie.

Texas! Texas! Kill! Kill! Kill!

um...

derby is not a "fake sport".

^_^

~i’m just a little bossy, i like it how i like it, when i like it...and that’s how it is~ :P

Erin's picture

how can a sport be fake?

how can a sport be fake? the definition of sport is pretty much any physical activity that uses strategy to win over another team. so no its not fake.. its just something to pass time and get a good work out.

im going to stop myself there because this comment really rubbed me the wrong way.

Tam G's picture

yeah.

"how can a sport be fake?"

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not even into sports but seriously, throwing a ball or running fast is not any more or less of a sport than derby. Which as far as I know, is pretty hardcore.

Bombshell's picture

Roller derby is real

Oh my. Darkmonohue seems to be stuck in the 70s. Roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the United States and is 100 percent real. Check out the rules page of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. http://www.wftda.com/official-rules. There is no "pretending to beat other players up." There's no punching, tripping, pushing, clawing, biting or anything fake or untoward. It's an aggressive, full contact sport that takes months to train for. Women all over the country have dedicated themselves to creating and supporting strong skater-owned leagues.

Where are you from, Dark Monohue? I'll bet there some derby in your area that you could go see. I'm a founding member of the Hellions of Troy Roller Derby.www.hellionsoftroyrollerderby.com and you can bet we are ecstatic about "Whip It!"

stephanie b's picture

Definitely not fake

Derby is not fake. It's a really fun, intense sport in which women get to be aggressive and athletic and sexy but not in exploitive way that's meant to get men off. Which may be why lesbians seem to love it. Whenever I go to a bout, there's always tons of lezzies there so it's also a good place to meet women. :-)

I'm really looking forward to Whip It! if only for the lovely and talented Ellen Page. She's a good casting choice. She looks like she would be a derby gal.

hammy_mac's picture

I can't wait...

I've 'researched' in to this derby which involves rollers...and find it utterly confusing...jammers/blockers/packs and what not...I just don't get it, not that I don't get the reason or purpose of roller derby, I just don't get the rules?! Possibly as I'm in the UK, though a friend has suggested joining her Roller Derby team lol! Yes it is in the UK!

I can imagine it being highly competitive, full of lean athletic women, determination and utter skill..hmm now that does sound exciting!

Now back to the main subject, I am looking forward to seeing it, I love the films that Drew is part of and hope her directing debut is a success. I am also a big fan of Ellen Page, so combining the two will surely be a winner. Especially with the supporting actresses like Lewis, who no doubt will be a hard bitch/sarcasm stylee...isn't Bell a stunt double or something?! Didn't she do Xena/Kill Bill...no wonder she'll be in this then, so some good action from her!! And Wiig to bring in some funny comedy to round up a good looking cast.

I hope it makes it to the UK! :)

You should definitely have

You should definitely have a go at  roller derby i'm with The Sheffield Steel Rollergirls ( http://www.myspace.com/sheffield_roller_derby)

i only started in February and am absolutely hooked. Its such a  awesome sport. When I started I could hardly stand up on skates but soon got the hang of it.  We train twice a week and it does take a lot of determination but feels so good even when your legs ache.

We are all hoping that  the film makes it to the U.K  as well

I have no idea what a roller derby is but I'm looking forward to watching this film. Drew Barrymore directing and Ellen Page starring...it just seems too good to be true!

Yes!

Finally a release date! I have been so excited for this film. Ellen in any film is automatically worth seeing but with Drew directing and starring too? Talk about spoiling us!

Although as with most movies, i'm pretty sure it will be released in the UK later than october 9th :( regardless, ellen in shorts? This film can't come soon enough...

danes38's picture

already marked!

one more reason to wish summer was over... i will watch anything with ellen page in it. i even had to rewatch x-men after i learned of her awesomeness!

I don't know what

I don't know what Roller Derby is but I'll still watch a film if its got Ellen Page in it.

My friend watched Juno for the first time the other (after my long time persistence) and her opinion was.. "yeah, it was actually quite good". And I was like "Good!? Its damn hilarious is what it is"!!!

Melissa Hsu's picture

It's been too long, Miss

It's been too long, Miss Ellen Page, haha!

I don't know anymore. I mean...I'm excited because it's just Ellen Page. That's it. The movie itself, well, I'm not so sure. I guess we'll have to see!
Melissa Hsu's picture

Can't wait to see 'Whip

Can't wait to see 'Whip It!'. Ellen and Drew are 2 of the coolest chicks around.

As for 'Jennifer's body', not so much.

waiting!

I'm waiting for it just because of Ellen Page since I'm not a fan of roller derby, I don't understand it and it doesn't exist in my country but it looks kinda cool!
Bianca St. Binji's picture

Yes, recognition

I love that roller derby is getting big budget recognition. I LOVE Drew Barrymore and I like Ellen's style.

I play Rugby and my teammates and I are always looking at Roller Derby going, "Hmm, I wanna try that, that looks like Rugby on wheels!" Violent women, just my crowd. lol

Now all we need is a big Rugby movie.

Tam G's picture

Finally!

I've been so excited for Whip It since I found out about it after stumbling onto a picture of Ellen splayed across Zoe during a Halloween party at Drew's house. COME ON. Pure awesomeness.

I'm also excited to see Drew as a director. She's been strong on the producing side so this will be an interesting next step. Of course I absolutely adore Ellen Page but Zoe Bell seriously deserves to be making more movies. That girl has got some serious presence. And you know the physicality will be great. Throw Drew, Eve, Juliette Lewis, Kristen Wiig and all of it in a very dykeadelic sport? Yeeeeah.

Plus, it's totally going to be so subtexty. You just know it. The Ellen/Zoe fan fic that will be coming? Think of it.

The caption probably needs to be fixed. I'm assuming Ellen's shirt says 'Axles of Evil'.
