Great!

Wise and smart as usual.

I've been on and off workouts for the last ... years.

Like everyone else my resolution for 2010 is to be fit and lose a few pounds not necessarily to look good (well it is one amazing side effect for sure) but to feel good.

Working out is mood regulating, self-confidence building  and an energy boosting.

Well, if Lacey would come over and give me the little kick in the lower back that I need to start working out again I would be happy.

The problem is to START working out. Once you're in the mode it is fine but hell... the first step!

Determination and motivation will be my salvation. I'm going to start digging to find my abs, they must be somewhere but I haven't seen them in so long that I almost forgot I have some.

yay. <3

Thank you so much for doing a vlog about this. I decided late last year that it was time that I finally adapt a healthy lifestyle. I changed the way I ate and started working out regularly - I've lost 14 pounds. My girl has always talked to me about her working out but I could never relate.. now I can and it's so nice.

Lacey - I get a lot of inspiration from your Twitter, so thank you. :) And I wanted to ask... I've hit a plateau it seems so what are some ways I can boost my workout? I'm doing 30 minutes of cardio 4-5 days a week.

Leenaomi's picture

Hey ladies

I was just waiting to see this ep, before I hit the bed.

Lacey, I totally agree about meeting a fitness professional.

This is what I did and I've been working out for 4 months now. I love dancing, I used to be a professional dancer (not the kind who does it with a pool, lol _ These lovely ladies :-D) and took another path with my life. After several years without training, I felt HORRIBLE in my body. My friends couldn't understand, and thought that I looked good and didn't need it therefore going to the gym was a waste of money.

I wasn't at ease in my body. I definitely needed to start working out again at least 4 days a week, but I just COULDN'T WORKOUT ALONE. I tried ; it works for several days and than :-§.

I'm fortunate that I can afford my personal trainer. But what about those who just can't ? Not even a membership at a gym. What would be your advice to them ? What would be the 5 or 10 steps for a healthy body ?

Jessica I just fine you EXQUISITE inside out. You are part of the reason why I'm such a fan of this vlog. And Lacey you are just too CHARMING to leave you a side. By the way, love the hair.

Again thank you. Have a great week, bisous.

great vlog

My ex was not sporty or into being fit as much as I am, and it's true what you two say. I became lazy etc.. but now I love going to the gym again, and yes it does help if you fancy a personal trainer at your gym.. I do, I find myself going to the gym more often! :)

Looking forward to the next vlog.

Lacey.. you are looking GORGEOUS!

Motivated!

I loved this vlog, as always. I wanna play "kissy face with someone I like." I agree that being in relationships can result in a shift in body-health priorities. It happens often. My wife jokes that on our first date I ate the chicken salad and water and she ate the cheeseburger with fries with mayo on the side (to dip the fries in)with a coke. 11 years later we still eat at the same dinner except I order a cheeseburger. Speaking for myself, I think exercising and eating healthy gets pushed to the wayside when work needs to come home and life happens. It is now a conscious effort to work out and eat healthy. When I was in college I did a varsity sport and got my butt kicked 1-2 times a day. I wish all those hours could go on a tab :) As for support for getting healthy, it is extremely important to at least be on the same mindset "bacause" if not the other person might sabatoge your health goals. Lacey, take out the garbage and help with the chores. I'm not going to say chores = love but to me it equals respect in the relationship. We all hate, what I call, cyclical chores, the ones that once you do it have to do the next day, but it needs to get done. That is something you could talk about gender roles in the lesbain household (i.e. man takes out the trash, woman does the laundry). I look forward to next Monday. Lacey - I like your hair color. It's not as blond as I thought it would be.

dory's picture

..dude, if trash = love, DO IT! :)

Great topic, ladies!

I think that the more two people have in common, the better! I couldn't imagine that I would be happy being with someone that didn't support and share at least some of the same interests as me, especially healthy lifestyle practices!!  I agree that fitness is extraordinary, and can only add happiness to peoples lives..

when i saw this, I thought you should do a vlog about lifestyle themes (fitness, healthy, food). i think it would fit better to you , than the more relationship orientated vlogs and its more interesting

studbagel's picture

cooking (and me doing dishes in return) = love

If trash = love for some people, then I definitely have to chime in that my partner cooking meals = love, and I hope me doing dishes = love in her mind!

I really like that this vlog brought up a topic that has been really important to my relationship. For me, a relationship cannot work unless we are jiving on food/nutrition and fitness/activity. I like to eat healthy, eat a variety of cuisines (I'm always up trying something new), and I like to be active, whether its running, ultimate frisbee, hiking, backpacking, cycling, basketball, etc.

Like one of the posters above, I dated someone that I didn't mesh with on those levels, and I too became lazy, unhealthy, gained some weight, and was pretty unhappy in general. When I started dating my current partner 3 years ago, I made myself workout everytime she went to triathlon training. Now that she's in a phd program, she works out less than she used to, but we still are able to do quite a few things together. And even though she's not out there training every day, I haven't let that become an excuse for me to work out less.

Ok, don't know where I am going from there, so I should probably just say "that's all I have to say about that."

My Tattoo reads

from the bottom up..."Strength from Within" My mantra because I have taken control of my body for myself. Not for someone else but for me. Believe it or not I was once really fat and this is what I have become for myself. Bam!

By being the best person I can be...I am better for someone else. Until I am happy inside no one else can bring me happiness.

Think about the instructions provided on a plane about the masks that fall from the overhead compartment. "Put your mask on first before you help others". Great advice to live by. Make you great....others will want to share in your greatness.

I like what you said.

gotta know yourself, before you can share it with someone else.
Lexi's picture

love the topic!

Oh my, it's like looking into a mirror this with topic.

I don't know why but after a nice, long workout, I think to myself, "wow I lost weight, now I can eat whatever I want for the next few hours." And then I just end up back where I started. And then there's the reverse, where I eat so much junk, that I feel bad and need to do whatever to feel better -even if it means running around the house for an hour.

Gah, why couldn't we all just ban junk food, after all out of sight is out of mind!

pyramidita's picture

great!

I completely agree...eating right and exercising needs to become a lifestyle, not a set period of time that ends in a bingefest.

And Lacey, if you were my trainer, I'd do anything you'd tell me to do ;)

I love you girls! Keep up the good work!

A little question for Lacey

Hey Lacey, I love the show and watch it everyweek.

I have a question regarding fitness. I train basketball and I'm just wondering since I train alot around evening time and sometimes I finish around 8 or 8:30  pm do I eat dinner before or after training.? : )

ZoraII's picture

I always take out the trash

jk.  I love this vlog. You guys are so inspirational, you give me hope that I'll find true love one day.

Anyway, this topic was on point. It's true that a person's fitness lifestyle can play a major role in whether or not a relationship survives.  I had a friend who was very health conscious and I just couldn't understand it. It was weird to me that she worked out daily and watched what she ate (this was back in my teen years when I could get away with eating anything I wanted and not gain a pound). I would tease her and encourage her to eat junk food but she was always very uncomfortable with it. I didn't realize back then that her health and fitness was very important to her, so much so that it affected every part of her lifestyle.  Our friendship didn't last very long, so I can imagine just how bad it could be in an actual romantic relationship.

Now that I'm an adult I see that my unhealthy lifestyle is starting to catch up with me. I'm overweight for the first time in my life and I find myself starting to have mysterious aches and pains. I just joined the Y but I have yet to actually go and all this stupid snow is not helping things much.  I guess the weather is giving me an excuse to put off going to the gym for another week.

I have a question for Lacey

I work in the city and my commute to the office takes about an hour by train each way.

So when I get home its roughly 6.30-7.00pm sometimes I feel to go to the gym and am motiviated enough to go, but other days I can't be bothered esp since it will mean I end up eating dinner later when I'm already hungry.

I have a nintendo wii, whats your thoughts on games for fitness - things like the wii fit, and the ea sports active? Are they a good alternative to the gym?

couldn't have come at a better time!

I really needed to hear this!  I've been working to lose fat for almost a year now, but school and holidays and unforeseen circumstances have thrown wrenches in my gears, lol.  After taking off a few months for school, I'm going back to the gym tomorrow with a friend of mine.  It wasn't until about a month ago that I realized how much I missed working out!  Yes, it's a lot of work and sweating and such, but generally I felt so much better about myself.  Now, I've been eating poorly again and I've been severely lacking in energy and I just can't wait to get back to feeling nice and healthy again.

Anyway, my friend has never been to a gym before and I've had a hard time convincing her that just because she'll be lifting weights, that doesn't mean that she's going to get ripped or lose her feminine figure.  I think this is a problem for most women and the reason why so many do fad diets instead of going to the gym.  What advice can you offer for someone in my situation?  What should I tell her?

Torpian's picture

You have your fitness sh*t together!

Well, funny you should be vlogging about fitness. I started working out in Sept. P90 by beachbody. Lost 2 inches all around and 7 lbs. I was on my way to doing better. Then I started feeling tired and like the other people that posted before me, I was getting home late just wanted to veg out. I got really dissapointed in myself and when by Jan 2010 I was not working out anymore.

It's important to continuously renew your annual goals, I call them objectives. I went to lovely Lacey's website and found inspiration. Here are two twentysomething women who have their fitness sh*t together. You HAVE to. Your partner should be into what you're into. Lacey, I've been reading your blog entries in your website and have a renewed look at my fitness. Here it is: I'm doing it for MYSELF!  Yeah, that's right! I'm still learning to eat better and better. This year I'll be joining a bicycling fund raiser for diabetes and a kayacking club because, this is really me. I like wearing the sporty clothes, the sporty watches and sneaks. This is who I really am. And, once you are yourself and are comfortable with yourself you will attract the right person...I don't have to tell you both this....

And my workouts? Changed them to mornings! Getting it out of the way, and I have more energy throughout the day, including a well deserved sense of accomplishment to last me the entire day. Point: if something doesn't work for you, find an alternative. Find another way.

Thanks for the inspiration Lacey. BTW, you're hot! Jessica you're too.

Aw crap! I didn't want to be long winded. I'll cut it shorter next time.

This is the one topic I unfortunately do not share with most women, but great vlog.  Wow, I love Lacey's shirt!!  Where can I get that?

boob check!

I had to laugh SO F-ing hard when Lacey grabbed her boob and apologized to the camera... I sometimes forget I'm in public when I do a boob check too hahahhaha

Anyway I think it's really important to work out for yourself. It WILL make you feel better, it usually gives you tons more energy (i'm a little suprised at the comments on it being draining, though I can see how you might just not feel like it at the end of a long work day--I'd suggest trying to get the work out in in the AM and see how your energy feels afterwards!) and it's important to make it part of your daily routine FOR LIFE, like it can't just be an "I have this goal for the new year, I need to lose X amt of lbs" because I've seen so many family and friends reach their goal, and then gain it back 2x over. And weight fluctuation is way unhealthier than maybe being a few lbs overweight but keeping it steady (correct me if I'm wrong Lacey)  Once working out is like wiping your ass you'll be glad you did it because itchy butts aren't healthy, cool or sexy ;) and you start to feel weird if you don't work out, like your day isn't somehow complete.

that's how it is for me anyway

5 Love Languages

So what you said about Jessica appreciating you taking out the trash or doing the laundry more than flowers or anything reminded me of this really amazing book/test. It's called the 5 Love Languages. Here is the website where you can take it: http://edified.org/myspace/lovelanguage. It takes about 2 or 3 minutes and is really insightful. The love languages are Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, and Acts of Service. It will show you how much you appreciate each of these things, and helps give you insight into how to best show appreciation and love to your girlfriend, boyfriend, friends, parents, kids, etc. For instance, I love physical touch, but giving me a gift doesn't mean that much. I feel like I have everything I need (ie. I prefer a hug or other things ;) to flowers). Knowing this is really powerful and it has helped me a great deal in the past. Plus it's just really interesting. So you should take a few minutes to take the test, and if you actually listen to the results, I promise you you won't regret it.Thanks again for a great video! I look forward to these every week! ~

LOVE 'The Five Love Languages'!!

It's one of the most useful books that I've ever read and I absolutely recommend it to all!  Lacey and I have totally incorporated it's concepts into our relationship and the way we work to communicate love to each other.

Great suggestion MereMere! Thanks to everyone for your comments.  In terms of the fitness questions for Lacey, I'm sure she'll answer when she can but also many of them are actually answered in the ARCHIVES of our Fitness Blog http://sweatcity.wordpress.com/

 Hope that helps!

The answers to your questions and mmmoorreeeee!!!

Heeellloooooo EVERYONE!

Thank YOU for your comments, compliments anndd all aroundawesomeness. Soooo I apologize for not getting back to you sooner… Life hasbeen CRAZY with our Wedding planning, some awesome work possibilities and I gotinvited to a SWEET NYC Fashion Week Event tomorrow.  I gotta say people goooo after your dreams… Even when thedoor SLAMS in your face.  When youbelieve in yourself you’re unstoppable.

Ok sooo this is good now because I can give you BIG ole longresponse.

I would love to tell you that it’s easy and if you take thismagic workout or eat this miracle food it will happen over night, SHAZAM!  But then I would be lying and I don’tdo that to anyone. Listen people to have a great body and a great life it takesa lot of effort-and-sweat-and persistence.  Things are going to happen, life is going to get complicatedand you’re going to want to quit… You’re going to want to give up.

I find that fitness is a microcosm of life. When times gettough in your job or in your relationship do you quit?  I hope not…  When you give up on your fitness you give up on you.  That’s why it feels so painful, no onelikes to give up on themselves. When you feel good about you and your body it’s unexplainable howwonderful that feeling is. It’s priceless… It’s worth the workouts trust me.TRUST ME.

I sooo WISH I could train each and every one of you to feelas passionate about fitness as I do. But for now I am going to tell you this… No more excuses.  There will always be an excuse so stopmaking them now.  Instead of makingexcuses as to why you can’t start finding solutions as to how YOU CAN.

  1. It’s to early. NO. You will wake up earlier.  Find a way to take control of your life. Get out of your own way and become the person you were meant to be.  Stop blaming your boss, your girlfriend, and your parents for your faults.  Start to take responsibility for who you are.  Find your passion and go for it. Live your destiny.

Plateaus – Dodo and Cassandra asked about this.  Your body is like a machine.  Once it does the same thing over andover again it becomes easy.  Thisis why you are not seeing results anymore. YOU need to challenge your bodyagain, change up your workouts. Use a different machine, do a different class, up your intensity ortimes you workout per week.  YOUshould see some changes if you apply this simple action.

RIPPED- Lots of women are sooo afraid of lifting weights…Tell them to watch my video and look at my arms. I db bench press 45lb dbs ineach hand, I would love to get more ripped but I can’t because I don’t haveenough testosterone in my body to make that happen.  Weights ROCK. Tell them to email me…I am very tired of womenbeing lame like this and lifting 10lb dbs… How much does their purse way???Coommmeee ooonn ladies suck it up! J

Night Time Eating – It’s important to eat dinner and keepthat metabolism going. I try to eat 5 times a day 2 snacks 3 small meals… Yourbody is like a fire you have to keep the wood on it or it will burn out but youcan’t put to much wood on the fire or it will burn out too.  BALANCE.  If you give yourself 3 hours to digest your food at 8pmthat’s fine sister.  The worstthing to do is to eat and go straight to bed because that makes it harder foryour body to work with all the calories you ingested. Get it? J

Wii Fit – It’s ok, for Yoga… But I don’t think it’s where itneeds to be yet for cardio. I would suggest Beach Body workout DVDs, P90X beingthe best if you want to stick with in home workouts.  My DVD is not out yet but when it is… We will have funtogether! J

My SHIRT – I got it at the Marc Jacobs store in New York, actually Jessica got it for me. It says… I pay my taxes and at the bottom itsays… I want my rights. It’s a great shirt with an awesome message, maybe youcan find it online? http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/07/new_marc_jacobs_declare_gays_r.html

Can’t afford a Trainer, How to get Started, FIND a way? Doyou really want to have a great body? Then you need to be willing to dowhatever it takes.  When we arewilling to do whatever it takes… You will yourself into being Fit, into beingthe person you were born to be. GET educated, go to Barnes and Noble get theBEST Selling book on what you’re looking to accomplish and read it. If you seesomeone that inspires you with their fitness level on the street or even afriend approach them… Talk to them… Take ACTION mmmaannn…  Anything is possible if you have thecourage to pursue it.

It’s not going to be easy but that’s what the reward is.When you work towards something and you start seeing great success you don’twant to stop. You will keep going to see even more success… and once you’vebeen going long enough… You will hit the tipping point and then there’s noturning back…  NO TURNING BACK. Youwill be on the journey to you and no one wants to turn back once they’ve foundthat journey.

RECRUIT an All-star Team of people that support you and yourgoals in your life. If you want to be fit, surround yourself with fit peoplethat will help you on that journey. People that will tell you that you can’t do it even when you don’t thinkyou can. You need to seriously question why you’re listening to people thatdon’t support you and your goals. And if that person is you… GREAT now you knowwhat’s stopping you… Start working on getting out of your own way.

HOW… One day at a time.  The choices we make every minute of every second of everydayadd up to our lives… What we look like and who we are.  It’s as simple as the choices youmake.

Are you ready to change your life forever?

Hope this helped… I have lots more where that came from! Andif anything I wrote struck a cord you should join my mailing list. I send outemails once month inspiring you get where you want to go.  I want you on my Team and I’m here foryou… Just an email away www.laceystonefitness.comclick on sign-up for the mailing list on the Home page.

Thank YOU all!

Lacey, you are pretty much my new fitness role model..

I can appreciate the fact that you took time out of your seemingly busy schedule to answer everyone's questions.  I can tell that you genuinely care about each and every person that wants to take that next step to bettering themselves through healthy lifestyle practices.  Good on ya WOMAN! You are going to be GREEEEAT!!

Lacey, I need help!

I really need some advice. I’m slim, but I’ve been trying to get into better shape and I try to do so by using a treadmill for 15 minutes every day. Is this sufficient or is it just lazy exercise? I’m really worrying about this, so help from you would be much, much appreciated. I really want a toned tummy more than anything, my legs are very firm, it's just the tummy!

1cor13's picture

To Lacey -

I try to stay fit, simply because I want to continue to play volleyball. I got my knees injured in my late 20s (some kind of "inflammation" due to traumatic stress - obviously from playing said volleyball), but physical therapy made it possible for me to be able to hit the ball again (woohoo!). I'm pretty old (boo), but my physique is like that of a teenager according to the BMI. The downside of it is that my muscles and bones are not strong, so I try to compensate it by working out. The problem is that I can't find a "personal" trainer for my needs. They all seem to focus on weight control, not so much on toning and strengthening. I'd like to have a trainer who prescribes the workout regimen specifically suited for my purpose and body. Am I asking too much or looking in the wrong place??

I realize that you have just answered all the questions from the posters - such is my luck, I guess... If anyone who can comment on this, I'd appreciate it.

Marceeahh's picture

weights & yoga

If your bones aren't very strong I'd recommend taking a calcium supplement? This might help in the long run for osteoporosis too!

I used to have horrible knee problems (along with flat feet, abnormal hips and a significantly longer right leg which along with knee problems gave me some back problems) and it hindered my running for a few years, so I started doing spinning which is easier on the knees, and also strength training with weights and yoga to help align my body (not all in the same day obviously, but say some days spinning, others weight training, others yoga). Strengthening my thigh muscles helped relieve the pressure my knees got on impact during running and now I'm running again sans knee issues.

I'm in NO way shape or form any kind of a fitness professional, so I'd consult with a doctor/trainer at your gym... but this helped me!... hope it helps you too!

1cor13's picture

Thank you for your input!

Thank you for your input! Obviously, you have problems unique to your body and it's great that you have overcome them and now can run. Did you have a trainer who suggested how to strengthen various muscles for your specific problem? I know some basics, like the quads are important for the knees, but I feel there's more effective way to deal. Yeah, I should have been more insistent on contacting those trainers at my gym --- it's a University gym, so trainers are not necessarily professionals, though. What is "spinning", BTW?

Love the blog! this one really stuck me as I had an Ex that, when I said I wanted to go start hitting the local gym because I was unhappy in my body told me NO.  Reasons varied between it will take time away from family time (which was bogus) and her main beef was she said she didn't want me to get in shape becasue other women might notice me. Glad she is an ex.
