TV Alert: "Samurai Girl" debuts on ABC Family tonight

Heaven Kogo is a regular teenage girl — she just also happens to be a ninja. OK, so perhaps "regular" isn't the word; it would be more correct to refer to her as Samurai Girl, hence the name of the new three-part series on ABC Family that begins tonight at 8 p.m. EST.

The series is based on a young adult book series of the same name written by Carrie Asai. The character of Heaven seeks to avenge her brother's death and get out of an arranged marriage (she really gets herself into some crazy predicaments). Luckily, she's a master of the sword, and is able to take care of herself as well as some others (though the latter happens to be in a violent sort of way).

Jamie Chung plays Heaven, whose acting credits include Greek, Veronica Mars and CSI: NY. Oh yeah, and you also might remember her as herself, when she was a cast member on MTV's The Real World: San Diego. Good to see that something pleasant can come out of that kind of exhibitionism.

If you're a fan of any kind of ninja-ing (martial arts films, Kill Bill, kicking people, etc.), Samurai Girl is just long enough to keep you interested for three nights and short enough for those with limited attention spans. However, if it's as good as it looks, we might be asking for more.

Samurai Girl premieres tonight with parts two and three following on Saturday and Sunday. Will you be watching?

I remember her from RW San

I remember her from RW San Diego.  I might give this a watch b/c I love martial arts films and well, frankly, she is really hot.

Wow!

I completely forgot that she was ever on The Real World. I knew she looked familiar. Now, Ive already seen part one of the first episode (thanks to ITunes) and it is a bit weird. Im not going to spoil it so dont worry. What I really would llike to know is how the AfterEllen Asian community feels about this show? I have already read a few of the comments on ITunes and they are not so pretty. I am certainly not asian but I do understand how "Hollywood" has a tendancy to mix cultures together. I will give it to ABC Family, though, for employing a good number of asian actors in this show. We'll see how the rest of the does.

And if all else fails, Jamie is totally hot!

Hmmm...

Well, it looks interesting, but commercials tend to give all the best parts away. I honestly would not be surprised if it doesn't turn out well.

But on the bright side, Jamie is a beautiful woman, so I'll be watching :)

my eyes, they are rolling

1. She's not Japanese.

2. Samurai and ninja are completely different things.

I'll probably watch this, but I'm not expecting anything amazing.

Think I'll...

Samurai Girl....yah

So I skipped out on tons of parties this weekend just so that I can watch this three part show this weekend! Well, it's not to that extreme but I am, however, watching it (even though currently it is on commercial).

So far, this movie is very cheesy and the acting: Ha...Ha...Ha...no comment.

But this does show me something though: I will continue to at least watch this episode/part one because she is extremely cute.

And she was on RW San Diego? Hmm, i was wondering why she looked wicked familiar.

Besos :)

no for me

ninja?  arranged marriage??????  that would be cool and all, if we had other kinds of asian girls represented on tv and film and other media.  but right now i'm not wanting anymore of this kind of...this kind of...sigh.

Definitely pass. I tried

Definitely pass. I tried watching the pilot but it was just one big meeeeeeh. None of the characters were mildly interesting and the pilot managed to do everything except draw me in which is its only objective. To get the viewer hooked so they want to watch more, right? Well this was just poop.

Lots of support for Jamie

Lots of support for Jamie since she is from my hometown and went to my high school, but I can't believe she'd actually agree to participate in a series that's so misrepresentative of Asians. First of all, she's Korean. Second, as someone else mentioned earlier, ninjas and samurai are different...and Japanese. All Asian cultures are NOT the same.

god was this bad!!!!!!!

absolutely awful! Comparing this to Kill Bill is like comparing water and wine. One is utterly bland and boring while the other is the drink can make you wild and might increase your chances of getting layed when the night is over. This show made me hurt for all those awesome Asian peoples out there. It sucks for you guys!! If there is ever an Asian chick cast in a movie she is either a geisha or a butt kicking, tree jumping, kung-fu queen. I was so pissed when I saw this. I reinforces those steriotypes that should already be a thing of the past. What a peice of crappity crap this whole production was...
