News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Straight musicians dedicate their songs to us

Surely you've noticed that straight people are just as fascinated with us as we are with them (probably more so). Some are so intrigued that they use us as fodder for song lyrics, which can be either disastrous or hilarious, depending on the context. Others walk a fine line (i.e., Kanye West rapping, “Heard they'd do anything for a Klondike/Well I'd do anything for a blond dyke” in his single, “Stronger” — funny or offensive? The jury's still out.)

Here are some of my favorite tunes about us, but not by us:

Weezer - “Pink Triangle” — Choice lyrics from this '90s hit include:

I'm dumb, she's a lesbian
I thought I had found the one
We were good as married in my mind
But married in my mind's no good
Pink triangle on her sleeve.

Sorry, Rivers!

Reel Big Fish - “She Has a Girlfriend Now” — A ska band singing its woes! It seems this girl made the right decision because this dude never had a chance:

I never thought it would end like this
just because I've got no t--s.

Yeah, that's totally the only reason she's into chicks.

Jens Lekman - “A Postcard to Nina” — See, some dudes can be sweet! As he explains in the clip, this song was written about Jens' lesbian pal who asked him to pretend to be her fiancé so her dad wouldn't know she was gay:

Nina I can be your boyfriend
So you can stay with your girlfriend
Your father is a sweet old man
But it is hard for him to understand
T hat you wanna love a woman.

Two other honorable mentions that don't have videos in their honor: Engelbert Humperdinck's “Lesbian Seagull” and Loudon Wainwright's “I Wish I Was a Lesbian” (the latter is especially awesome). We're just so song-worthy!

side note abt kanye's lyrics.

i was offended until i saw him perform on ellen and imply that his lyrics were about her. needless to say, ellen then reacted awkwardly and that hilarious and priceless moment saved those lyrics for me.
pfl's picture

Oh that Jens....

He's such a sweetheart :)

The only other gay-positive song from a straight person that I can think of is Kate Bush's "Kashka From Baghdad." It's about a male gay couple though. Still, very nice.

Here's a part of the lyrics:

Kashka from Baghdad
Lives in sin, they say,
With another man,
But no one knows who.

Old friends never call there.
Some wonder if life's
Inside at all--
If there's life inside at all.

But we know the lady who rents the room.
She catches them calling a la lune.

At night
They're seen
Laughing,
Loving.
They know
The way
To be
Happy.

They never go for walks.
Maybe it's because
The moon's not bright enough.
There's light in love, you see.

I watch their shadows,
Tall and slim,
In the window opposite.
I long to be with them.

'Cause when all the alley-cats come out,
You can hear music from Kashka's house.

At night
They're seen
Laughing,
Loving.
They know
The way
To be
Happy.

Hmm...

How about the killers song, 'Somebody told me'?

Chorus:

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Still love that song =)

Jonathan Richman - I was dancing in a lesbian bar

is another great example:

One of my favourite songs while riding the underground or pretending to do sports. Makes me laugh every time I'm listening to it and actually gives me some hope that this kind of bar really exists somewhere even if I haven't quite found it yet :)

I LOVEDDDDDD that song when I first heard the album, which I originally bought for another tune. Best money spent on a full album for supposedly one song! I still have it too.

For you younguns out there, an album is a large plate sized but thin piece of vinyl with songs scratched into the surface. It's played on a RECORD PLAYER or TURN TABLE, preferrably connected to a stereo receiver and speakers. These were quite popular until the rise of CDs and the demise of the vinyl format. You can still find these in some nightclubs and vintage record shops...hee.

Album explanation

LOL at your explanation about vinyl albums :p

Guess I'm not a 'younggun' anymore afterall, since I actually listened to those when I was a kid.. Heck, my girlfriend owned a record player with about 50 records up until last year when she decided to sell it all!

(and I'm only 22.. now I feel old ;P )

As for the turnables, 3+ are in use in our home at any given time. You can't quite match the sound quality of vinyl; not so "crystal clear" BUT better in some ways... warmer I'd say.

And as for your first releases of Bauhaus... I'M JEALOUS!

Quarterflash sounds great on vinyl too!

Patti Smith's song "Gloria" has got to be a lesbian anthem.  Patti Smith is definitely straight (sigh) though.

"I-I walk in a room, you know I look so proud
I'm movin' in this here atmosphere, well, anything's allowed
and I go to this here party and I just get bored
until I look out the window, see a sweet young thing
humpin' on the parking meter, leanin' on the parking meter
oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling and then I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine
ooh I'll put my spell on her "

My best friend - Hello Saferide

I already mentioned it and saw it mentioned around this site, but this song deserves to be better known because it's hard to get homo-friendlier than that, plus well it's catchy I think!!!

You call me up in the mornings
We’ll stay on the phone until dawning
You tell me secrets I actually keep
You call me up around noon and
Bring me all the good gossip
You hold my head when I throw up
I hold your hand when you weep

And we talk about friends
And we talk about records
Talk about life
And we’ll talk about death
And we dance in the living room
Dance on the sidewalks, dance in the movies
Dance at the festivals, dance, dance
No men ever really dance like this

Damn! I wish I was a lesbian
Damn! I wish I was a lesbian
Damn! I wish I was, and that you were, too
So I could fall in love with you

You call me up in the evenings
And tell me what they did this time
No matter what, I’m by your side
When it’s raining, we’ll go to the video store
We even like the same movies
No damn jedis or hobbits, this time!

And you laugh at my jokes
And I laugh at your jokes
And I even like the birthday presents you get me
And we dance in the living room
Dance on the sidewalks
Dance in the movies
Dance at the festivals
Let’s dance, dance
No men ever really dance like this

Why don’t I fall?
Why don’t I just fall in love with you?

And here's the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJU1bbBC3g8

Not exactly a very happy song...

but Ben Harper's "Mama's Got a Girlfriend Now" probably fits into this category as well.

MUJER CONTRA MUJER!!!!

Oh please this MUST be number one!!!

Mujer contra mujer - Mecano ( 1986)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATMzgCbMjVs

There's nothing special
About two women holding hands
The shade comes after that
When they do it under the tablecloth

Then, alone and with nothing to lose,
The hands go first, and then the rest of the skin.

A love to hide
Though naked, there's nowhere to hide it.
They disguise it as friendship
When they go out walking round the city

One of them thinks that that's not right
The other one says: " Who cares?".
And other's opinions don't count.

Who stops doves flying?
Flying over the ground
Woman on woman.

It's not up to me
To throw at them the first stone
If I'm in the wrong circumstance,
And I found them lip to lip in a room
I wouldn't even dare to cough
If I don't like it, I know what I've got to do.
With my stones they build their own wall.

Who stops doves flying?
Flying over the ground
Woman on woman.

One of them thinks that that's not right
The other one says: " Who cares?".
And other's opinion doesn't count.

Woman on woman.

NOFX - Liza and Louise

pretty explicit lyrics

Liza's had enough of men,
She says, she won't get burned again,
She says, they don't know how to f***,
Her last boyfriend, the shmuck,
Shared with her a nice disease,
Kept her passive, on her knees,
Till one day she took his car,
And drove it to the city.

When she met this girl named Lou
Who convinced her to go home with her

Ben Harper...

in "Mama's got a girlfriend now"... I don't know if its his song, but anyway... it goes like this:

Papa he left home today
Said he ain't comin' back again
Said he ain't gonna be nobody's second best
Just 'cause mama's got a special kind of friend

Papa he left home today
Said he ain't comin' back no more
Said he ain't gonna take no damn back seat
And how could mama do him so low

But mama's got a girlfriend now boy
Mama's got a girlfriend now
Mama's got a girlfriend
Mama's got a true friend
Mama's got a girlfriend now

You see mama don't watch your damn football
And your beer drinkin' just won't do
You're just stayin' out late
And you're preachin' the hate
And you never have been true

You see mama she want her somebody
Who will let her be herself
So she's leavin' you
And your stinky damn ways
Cause she's found somebody else

tim, i wish you were born a girl

ok... this is another song that doesn't quite fit in this category.  but this is the ultimate song for a gay girl to play for a good male friend who would be the perfect girlfriend, if he was a girl.  it's by of montreal and it's a really sweet love song from one heterosexual man to another heterosexual man.  so, it's not really about the lesbians. it just recognizes that since they're not gay, it's too bad that one of them isn't a woman.  and i think we've all had a situation where we've had a really good friendship that maybe could have been more if biology had been right so i think it is a theme a lot of lesbians/bisexual women relate to.

"Tim, wish you were born a girl

So I could've been your boyfriend
I know it's not possible now
I just never met a girl I like half as much as you

And we could lay around in bed, stay there all day
Or at least until the afternoon
And I could make you spaghetti with tomato sauce
With just a touch of oregano and a parsley stem

And then when you got sick
I could take the day off work
I could've made you chicken soup
And we could watch soap operas
Oh, those TV dramas!
I could catch your cold
And you could take care of me

If I could've met you at school, or met you at work
It would have changed everything
Those years of losing, confusion and insecurity
They would have been shared
They would have been easier

Tim, wish you were born a girl
So I could've been your fiancé
I'm not saying you can't be all these things for me
But it's just not the same because you're a man

And so am I"

Interesting...

I didn't know that about the Kanye singing on Ellen thing... very interesting Gem, thanks for the info.

I really enjoyed Jens Lekman's song The Opposite of Hallelujah and because of that I started to look into some of his other songs, when I came across the song A Postcard To Nina, which is a really great song as well.

Oh, and Heidz, I've been listening to that Quarterflash song Valerie forever now and always wondered whether the singer was straight/gay and how the song came about, since it's a rather early song (I think it came out around 1981) dealing to some extent with a lesbian topic. Thanks for a bit of an update to my queries.

I have (at last check) 11,294 songs in my iTunes library (I'm not sure I'll ever get to listening to them all-and the iPod holds 25,000, so I'm far from done), so I'll have to keep my ears open and try to discover if there are any more lesbian friendly songs by straight artists amongst my collection.

"hotel song" by regina spektor could have any number of meanings but i've always thought it was about waking up with a strange girl.

come into my world
I've got to show show show you
come into my bed
I've got to know know know you

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
but I wake up in fear
you will never be my, you will never be my fool
will never be my fool

Floaters in my eyes
wake up in the hotel room
cigarettes and lies
I am a child, it's too soon

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
but I wake up in fear
you will never be my, you will never be my fool
will never be my fool

a little bag of cocaine
a little bag of cocaine
so who's the girl wearing my dress
I figured out her number
inside a paper napkin
but I don't know her address
I wade downstairs

the porter smiles to me
a smile I've bought
with a couple of gold coins
a sign that I've been caught

I have dreams of orca whales and owls
but I wake up in fear
you will never be my, you will never be my dear
will never be my dear, dear friend

my dear, dear friend...

poi dog pondering

their song, "sandra at the beach" is very cute.

partial lyrics:

"... Well Sandra's with another woman of 35
who's much more reserved,
standing just out of reach of the waves
licking up her feet.
She's watching Sandra's every move.

Sandra looks so good today I think that she is in love.
Sandra feels those eyes and they feel good.
Just like pin prick lips on the seat of her suit.
And she is moving out into the waves,
and she is so inspiring in love like this--
and you know,
it makes me wonder what kind of night they had last night.
"Some kind of love," to steal a phrase or two--
"No kinds of love are better than others...."
Sandra looks so good today, I think that she is in love...."

Partial lyrics:

'Cause I need sleep with somebody soft.

Take a drink, a toast to his fortune.
But I'm not ready yet, for coffee or talk.

Is there a woman out there who'll take me away?
'Cause I may never find love with a man

Vienna Teng

My bff, singer/songwriter, Vienna Teng, wrote a song called "City Hall" about gay marriage in San Francisco.

You can hear it here.

She also writes several songs from the guy's point of view, which often has fans asking after her sexual orientation. Vienna is straight, but is very supportive of the gay community and not just because I'm in her life. I'm incredibly proud that she continues to care about issues that affect our community and uses her platform to trumpet them. That, she might do, because I'm in her life, but hey, we could use all the support we can get.

Married by Elvis - Barlow

I adore this song...and it's catchy.

There's a real cool couple living on my street
They smile and wave every time we meet
They've been together for the past five years
They're perfectly happy and perfectly queer
Its not a Brady Bunch episode
They're not the Cunninghams its not the Cosby Show
That black and white world didn't ever exist
Who says a family needs a mister and miss

They've got a dream
Picture the scene

They want to drive down to Vegas
Get married by Elvis
Get drunk on champagne and get legally laid
They'll cherish the kisses
As missus and missus
Now is that so terribly strange
Ain't it strange

"Give it a one one twenty in a Cadillac boom boom boom and me never look back"

Now it's a long, long way out of Buffalo
Thay've got the Dom on ice and a slice to go
In a top down Caddy in the desert breeze
Romeo and Juliet meet Thelma and Louise
They've got the radio, they've got one CD
Top 40 and some old Lou Reed

They got caffeine and gasoline
It's the Great Escape starring Jean McQueen
I think tonight
They'll both wear white

Yes, Vienna is an amazing person. I always say if I were gonna pine after any one of my straight girlfriends, it would be this girl. As she's one of the smartest and goodhearted people I'm lucky enough to call a friend. The girl got a 1590 on her SAT's and went to Stanford, holler.

I will give both girls your best. cheers.

She's Losin' It - Belle and Sebastian ("she said 'inch for inch, and pound for pound/who needs boys when there's Lisa around'")

Panik - Bratmobile ("she's the Joanest Jett around/like to get her in my bed")

Acoustic Guitar - Magnetic Fields - written by a gay man but sung by a woman ("acoustic guitar/you can have your own car/just bring me back my girl")

Phantom Limb - The Shins - according to the songwriter, this song is about two young lesbians in love("a latent power I know they hide/to keep some hope alive that a girl like I could ever try")

Polythene Pam - Beatles - not technically about lesbians, but I always like to imagine it as an ode to hot butch dykes ("she's so good looking but she looks like a man/well you should see her in drag, dressed in a polythene bag")
