Retro Reviewing: "Imagine Me and You"

After a very, very long week of finishing a few graduate theses, the Retro Reviewers were finally able to enjoy a little down time with their review of Imagine Me and You, a super cute 2005 film starring Lena Headey and Piper Perabo.

Everyone liked the flick for its attractive leads, fun story and happy lesbian romance, and the reviewers very much enjoyed throwing together a few wacky re-enactments for your own viewing pleasure.

...Lena Headey and Piper

...Lena Headey and Piper Perabo look NOTHING alike!! One's tall and blonde, the other's short and dark!!! Wtf?!

I actually thought that the

I actually thought that the two girls in lost and delirious looks really similar, not in this movie.

Some other movies you could review:

 -Fingersmith

-Boys Don't Cry

-Tipping the Velvet

-Fucking Amal

-My summer of love

-itty bitty titty committee

-8 woman

I Agree but...

I agree with the list, but Fingersmith was a movie? I thought it was a short series on British tv! Am I wrong?

Fingersmith appeared on tv

Fingersmith appeared on tv in two parts, but you can get it on dvd as a movie

like your list

I think those are some great suggestions bilong.

I don't think Piper Perabo and Lena Headey look at all alike.

Despite not believing in love at first sight (lust at first sight than can over time become love once you get to know the other person yes), I really enjoyed this film. It was sweet and beautiful.

Perhaps, if there were more romantic lesbian movies that weren't angsty and had happy endings we might be more harsh on this one, but until then this remains one of my favorites. 5 unicorns!

Tozita's picture

Great movie

1. Piper Perabo and Lena Headey don't look alike. No way.

2. I believe in crush at first sight, but not love at first sight. In spite of this, I enjoyed the movie.

3. I give it a 5, because it's a great movie. I loved the plot, I loved the characters, I loved the English accents and I even loved the music.

's picture

This movie frustrated me.

When I saw this movie I was annoyed. It lacked character development and the ending was anti-climatic. They spent most of the time avoiding their feelings and looking at each other longingly and when they final get together it was not satisfying. It reminded me when I watched a Bollywood movie with my roommate about this young couple who were arrange to be married. It didn't have subtitles, but I could get the gist from the animated acting and the occasional translation from my friend. The whole movie was spent with them getting to know each other as they eventually fell in love. Add a curious kid, a jealous aunt who wants her own daughter to marry the guy, and a devastating fire and you a slightly interesting movie (I liked Devdas better). The problem was that I waited throughout the movie to see them married so they could finally kiss. And what was the final shot?! Them holding hands in a ICU burn unit. Extremely frustrating. I know, I know in India they are very conservative and don't show anything...but it was still frustrating.

Anyway, that’s how I felt about this movie. I put in the time to watch them struggle with their emotion (I use the term struggle loosely) only to have some anti-climatic kiss in the back of a flower shop and a lame professing of love.

Oh, and the girls don't look alike in my opinion.

Rach's picture

I hate that movie

Not 'Imagine Me and You' I thought this movie was super sweet but Lost and Delirious. I don't understand why so many people like that movie...Ugh, I will save that for when you actually review. Anyway, loved the movie pick this time around. Great vlog. Oh and I agree with bilong, you should do Fingersmith sometime soon. Loved the book and miniseries.

And just a quick add. I do agree with Clowie O about the underdevelopment of the characters. True it isnt the best written movie but given most of the slim choices there are for 'happy ending' lesbian cinema this is pretty good or at the very least alright...

Oh, 'happy ending' lesbian....I realize that didnt sound right. Ha!

Love this film

In my opinion theY look nothing alike, but I love the film because it was cute, happy and funny so I give it a 5.

I love this film! And it

I love this film! And it was kind of a happy ending for the guy (SPOILER) he said that he wasn't doing what he really wanted - writing travel books - because of Rachel and then at the end you see him on a plane going off to do that and he meets that girl there.

And I agree with everyone else - they do NOT look alike, but I do think that Lena Headey looks a bit like Keira Knightley and the first time I saw it I thought Piper Perabo looked like Jennifer Garner.

Annie's picture

Blech!

I pretty much detest Keira Knightly, and I absolutely LOVE Lena Heady. So, I'm going to have to a) disagree, and b) pretend I didn't read that. :P

Well obviously Lena (we're on first-name terms) is waaay hotter/nicer/funnier than Keira Knightley..but you have to admit there is a slight resemblance there
faith_in_buffy's picture

I agree

They do look somewhat alike. But obviously Lena isn't as stupidly thin and seems like a much nicer person. Keira Knightly royally pisses me off, she's always complaining in interviews about being famous.

Lena does not look anything like Piper though. But I think some gay ppl do go out with ppl that look simular. I have gay male friend who always goes for guys with simular looks to him, I think its coz he loves himself.

As for this film. LOVED IT. Its so nice to see a lesbian film with a happy ending. As for the question of what alternte universe do parents support their daughter in leaving her husband for a woman maybe the answer is Britain, we don't care about ppl being gay much here. I really loved that Giles was in it and also Sue Johnston (love her in waking the dead) was fab as Luce's supportive mother.

I don't believe in love at first sight so when I watch the film I just think its lust that they have mistaken for love. I think Piper's character prolly is a lesbian which is why she is marrying her best friend. I don't think she really rushed into breaking up with her husband I think it made it appear more rushed than it was. She didn't even want to leave her husband because she did love him (as a friend though) and only did so after he told her she should. I liked it when he said that they were the unstoppable force so he had to move. Bless his little cotton socks.

Makes Sense Now

I always wondered why people in the AE community were huge Piper Perabo fans. Now I get it! I had no idea she played a lesbian. Good for her.

Wow so many demands, where to begin? :P

I would rate this film a 3.75 on the rainbow sugar covered unicorns scale 'cos its just so damn sweet!

I love the happy ending, i thought the character Cooper was really annoying and creepy, Heck and H rocked! As did Luce's mum :D

My favourite scene is the one in the super market, just thought it was really funny. I didn't the rest of the film any funnier though. I hated the "you're a wanker number nine" thing at the football match, don't know why but it makes me cringe.

COMPARING LENA HEADEY TO PIPER PERABO IS A CRIME!!!! sorry. Lena Headey is waaaaay better looking IMO.

I also think love at first sight is real and wonderful but rare.

Love the vlog, i can't wait for you to trash about Lost and Delirious! (I hope you do that film is horrendous)

:D x

Ha!

The rainbow sugar covered unicorns scale shall officially be our new rating system. That is, if I can convince my co-hosts of how amazing it is... I think Katie might shoot it down.

DDR Scene

I like this movie a lot!  It is a really fun little film, and I became temporarily obsessed with the song that played durring the DDR scene, partially because it reminded me of Lena and Piper together, and also because it was sung by someone named Kelly Marie and thats my name (well my 1st & middle anyway)

I kinda like that they never slept together, because she didn't really cheat on her husband that way, it made her character less mean for leaving him, since she waited till after she left him to be with Luce.

The accents are definitely a big check in the plus column as well!

I have been doing my gay movie research(via netflix) and definitely second Gia, I love the woman who plays Juliet in Lost, also you could do a movie called Gray Matters, which isn't a good movie, but when you watch it you will think about how it could have been a good movie (great cast, decent premise, just really rushed/poor execution, cramming waaay too much movie in their movie)  But you get to see Heather Graham and Bridget Moynahan make out, so its worth watching the movie for that alone.  Plus Helena is in it so thats just another reason to check it out.

Welcome back Retro Reviewing team in your entirety, we missed you!

But regarding the film - Ol Parker did ok.  I'm sure he'll do better - maybe not on the same subject matter.  I like the film mainly because I love Celia Imrie.  Loved her work with Victoria Wood on "As Seen On TV" - esp "Acorn Antiques".  Also, some years back, my friend and I helped her with her luggage when she was having a little fit when she was on the Tube.

It was just a nice film - not fantastic, but not utterly crap either.

Kelly's picture

couldn't I just replace

couldn't I just replace those two sailors with Lena and Piper and call it a day!?  Thats what I will attempt to do in my mind to prevent that video from coming into my head everytime I hear that song!!

really cute avatar btw!!  I love baby sylvester!!

K's picture

If you really want

So, if you really want, you can replace them, but the song will forever be a naff '80s disco track from the UK which was quite popular (No, I don't own a copy! LOL - oh, okay, I liked it too)

Hey, it was a toss up between putting my picture up (and frightening people) or putting up a cute picture - cute picture wins hands down every time.

BTW - agree with your comments about Elizabeth Mitchell - she is swoonsome - in Gia, Lost, ER, Nurse Betty etc...

Gray Matters - hated the film for being so ...so ... I'm actually lost for words.  That's how much I disliked it.  Although Briget looks wonderful, which is it's saving grace.

Kelly's picture

Gray Matters

I agree that it definitely wasn't a good movie, but you have to admit that buried beneath the suckitude there was the potential for the movie to have been good somewhere along the way

Yeah I was definitely upset when Elizabeth Mitchell left ER, its not just that she is extremely hot(which she really is, I almost burned a hole through my copy of Gia), there is something else to her, she always seems to light up the screen, she is one of the many things that has me tuning into Lost every week.  I just hope the rumors aren't true that she might not be back next year!!!  I haven't seen Nurse Betty but now I may just have to add it to my netflix queue!!

I can't see the video. HELP!

As a matter of fact, I can't see any video on AfterEllen. The video "box" is not even visible, it's just an empty space. What media player do I need installed so I can see it?
Trix's picture

Do you have Flash installed?

You need the Flash player to see these clips, but you shouldn't need anything else. Can you see clips on YouTube?
Mays's picture

YouTube? Yes. AfterEllen? No :(

I don't get it. If they require the same player why is it different here? But thanks anyways, I'll try and see what I can download.

I watched this movie in a big theatre, which was really cool.  It's also the first lesbian movie I ever bought because it was actually in the new release section at Target when I was browsing through.  I really, really like this romantic comedy.  It's definitely a movie that I've watched many times.  I have to say that I also don't think that they look alike at all.  I'm glad to see this vlog back, it's definitely my favorite!  So Lost & Delirious is next week...the ending of Imagine Me & You is so much better, but I think that Piper is much hotter in L&D.

I love this movie. It is cheery and funny and cute and all things mushy. It is definately one of my uppers. Plus they are both HOT and look NOTHING alike. I am a sucker for accents so I think my score is a bit higher because of it.

names & looks

I don't realy have a problem with people dating others that look like them as much as I do same names. That bugs me. I don't know why but it does. It's just like with a friend. I get so frustrated when people say my name and you respond then realize they weren't talking to you. That's just my opinion.

summernerd's picture

I don't like this movie

Two reasons why this movie was almost unwatchable (it took considerabl will power not to turn it off):

1. No character development.

2. It's not that funny. A bridge going to the bathroom at McDonalds? A crying lover being consoled by a quirky child? None of the scenes that were supposed to be funny actually made me laugh (except the early scenes with Luce's dad).

I still think it's an important film - it's rare to see lesbians in comedies with happy endings. Also, Lena Headey is a hottie.

Thank you!

This movie is not good! The only positives in this movie is it has two hot girls, Giles from Buffy, and a happy ending. I am more frustrated with this movie because it could have been a better movie if they just spent time on character development.

One of my favs of all time - thanks for reviewing!

My intro to IMAY was a bit of a winding one. I'd bought it on impulse at Blockbuster, thinking that I was being all out and proud with my relatively new found gayness. It sat on the shelf for a few months, and then one day, bored, I finally decided to watch it. I expected to see an arthouse, weird, hard to comprehend, total lezzie flick. What I saw instead was a romantic comedy that made me laugh my ass off (so loud that I'm sure my neighbors were wondering what the hell I was laughing at) and a film that latched it's way onto my sentimental heart.

Later, my friend who runs a site for the film (www.imaginemeandyouthemovie.com) told me to check out a photo shoot with Lena Headey. I gaped, drooled, asked her 'WhothehellisLenaHeadeyagain?!' and ran to the DVD player and pretty much started playing IMAY nonstop. Thus was the beginning of my massive Lena crush. As director Ol Parker says, the film is about love, not the package it comes in, and I love that this film has a happy ending. And Lena Headey. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this film - it's like my 'comfort movie' that makes me feel good after a bad day. And it does keep me on the lookout for cute, redheaded, hot-as-nails, yelling 'You're a wanker number nine!', florist. Hey, I can dream! ;D

Hopeless_Savage's picture

Well, I couldn't even

Well, I couldn't even finish watching this. I watched a retro reviewing thing a while back and thought 'WTF' when they got details of the film wrong. But seeing as how Imagine me and you is one of my faves, I made an exception and watching this again.

Yeah, I wont say too much, coz I don't wanna make anyone feel bad but, won't be watching this Vblog again, or watching the remainder of this thing.

Astrogirl's picture

Hmmm...

Guess your mum never told you that if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.

Cause you said plenty. Unnecessary. I'm tempted to flame you but I'll listen to Harpy and Sarah and will put the matches down. I will say that you could have just left quietly and with dignity.

Loved the movie. Light romantic comedy with lesbians as the leads characters - not a bad way to spend an afternoon. Was the first gay movie I saw and I still enjoy its simplistic and sweet style. I liked the review and am looking forward to the next installment.

not eveyone has to have a positive opinion

I'm sure the reviewers are big girls than aren't going to cry over a bit of criticism. I gotta say I wasn't wildly keen on the review but it was ok. I personally would have brought up different parts of the film that i particularly liked but there were also comments made that I agreed with. But yeh I don't think everyone has to say something nice, if you put something on the net for ppl to see you cant expect everyone to like it and if there is a section for comments ppl should be able to voice their oppinion.

Constructive Criticism

I think if she (Hopeless Savage) had given constructive criticism that it would have been a different story, but she wasn't really specific about why she didn't like the review, or what they could have done better.  If she had cited some specific examples of what she thought was wrong with the review, and then suggested how to make it better, that would have been acceptable, I'm sure even encouraged.

Nevertheless, I love watching retro reviewers, its like a little glimpse into the social circle I can only wish I was a part of, funny, attractive, and intelligent lesbian filmmakers discussing the representation of our community in film and comparing it to their own lives and experiences.  You guys make a great vlog that I look forward to watching every two weeks.

Astrogirl's picture

Thanks Kelly

That is exactly what I was trying to say. There is a big difference between giving feedback on something you thought could improve or dragged a little or that was overlooked but a big "YOU SUCK" like that from Hopeless Savage deserves a big WTF.

If you are so interesting and talented HS then put up a vlog of your own. Put your money where your mouth is and show us how it should be done. No frontin' G. *eye roll*

Danielle Riendeau's picture

Of course

We always welcome constructive criticism, though vague insults are a little off base...

If I may...

When we shoot an episode, we typically talk for a good 40-45 minutes. Much of it is good, serious discussion, and another large part is wacky, off-topic fluff. Then we do re-enactments, which we've generally seen a good response from.

In editing, I try to strike a balance between the serious talk and the funnier bits of rambling. We've taken a very informal approach, and that works for us.

As always, we love our viewers and read each and ever comment - sometimes obsessively! We absolutely love all of the positive feedback and truly welcome constructive, level-headed criticism.
