Retro Reviewing: "Desert Hearts"

This week, the Retro Reviewers took it way back to the 1980s with Desert Hearts, one of the very first lesbian films to enjoy mainstream success. With strong acting, a realistic lesbian relationship, and a fun Western setting, all of the ladies were impressed.

Despite what the ending titles of this episode list, the Retro Reviewers decided that a special Halloween episode would be more seasonal for next time, and they plan to attack The Hunger. Watch if you dare!

aaaw c'mon Desert Hearts is the best movie ever made ..okay okay I'm biased a lot .. I must have come out about a few months just before I first saw this film which would have been in 1994 ..we didn't get to see it til later in the Uk but this movie hit home and is part of my growing up so yeah! It's makes me cry everytime I see it ..and I watch it a lot ... and everything you girls said was pretty spot on .. your comments about the clothes made me laugh ...I looove 40's and 50's those Kathryn Hepburn pants wow! hahaha ..people had style back then.. but yeah you're right.. things move on and I'd never wear cut offs that went that high up the waist!

Hey I'm an older lady, yeah I'm still well preserved... I'm well educated and have two Batchelors and a Masters in Fine Art  and I make films ... ha ha ha I even take baths with my Bi girl friends...    don't all mail at once I have a lady!

Research

Hey guys, you might want to try doing some research before you review any of these films. It's strange that you don't seem to know the most basic things about the actors, writers and directors....for the sake of crediblity please do your homework!

Thanks for watching

Loved it! The bath tub

Loved it! The bath tub scene at the end was hilarious! I think Desert Hearts  is one of those films that doesn't seem to date as much as others because it is set in a different era to begin with. Therefore, its already purposely 'dated', and still appears fresh. Great film. 4.5, and the review itself - 5 gay magics!

I haven't seen The Hunger, so I will definately check it out for next time.

Cut 'em some slack

Vannie2 they do this for fun, for our entertainment why the hell should anyone care? Anyway... I liked this movie. My favorite scene is right before the sex scene. I thought it was funny because the Kay character got undressed really fast. She was almost like Superman jumping into a phonebooth only sans the blue spandex. And then Vivian was telling her to leave, Kay's response was "No you don't want me to leave". It was like a Svengali influence, only non-evil, just awesome. Sometimes I wish I had that power of persuasion. Also the Darryl character was weird. He was stalking Kay, and just reminded me of all the times guys thought they had a chance with me. It's funny, true and very sad. All in all I give this movie about a 3.5 on the gay magic scale. Yes, it was the first gay movie, but I felt that it moved slow and it was a bit choppy in parts, and Darryl was creepy.

And I have to say, I have never taken a bath with my straight friends. I've been in a hot tub, but I doubt it is the same thing.

Never met a pearl quite like you that could shimmer and rot at the same time through

The book desert hearts

Hey guys. Love the vlog, the relationship Cay and friend Silver was sexual in the book as far as I can remember. Just adding my two cents.

Cut em some slack

I understand that this vlog is not meant to be some sort of academic exercise, but fun....I only think that if one is going to make comments about a film, you might want to know some basic information about the people who made it to give you some insights on why they did certain things in the film, for instance, Donna Deitch. the director is indeed a lesbian. I enjoy this vlog as much as anyone else, and by the way, being entertaining and informative are not mutually exclusive.
Rina's picture

Hi

We do want to get our information right and we really appreciate the comment and any corrections. Thanks for watching us. We did mention that Donna Deitch is a lesbian. What we did mention is that Personal Best was a film done in the same period and that was actually directored by a man. I think the fact that Donna Deitch is a lesbian director really makes this film very special. Again thanks for watching and I admit yes, I at time will butcher people's names. Also, I have a hard time remembering people's names, but don't most people?

A definite 5

Rina, I'm totally with you on this one: it is certainly a 5!

I just watched the 2 disc special edition the other day, so here are some interesting facts regarding the things you talked about:

In 2007 the director, Donna Deitch, held an interview with the two leading actresses, Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau (thank god I don't have to pronounce that... imagine the comments on that one). they talked about their decision to do the movie. both of them said they had no reservations or second thoughts whatsoever, but were both advised by people around them (agents, family etc) not to do it. luckily they didn't listen.

The sex scene was not a one shot. the bonus disc includes a detailed account of how it was filmed: the director talks with the actresses about it, plus there's the actual footage.

Thanks for another great vlog!

The four of you had me

The four of you had me smiling and laughing throughout this vlog!  I just re-watched this film for the first time in a couple of years right before I watched the review and it reminded me how much I love this movie.  That car/rain kiss was incredibly hot and I really loved the build-up of their relationship too.  Ratings wise, I'll give it a 4.5.  Plus, it doesn't hurt the score that I developed a huge crush on Kay!  Oh, and I really loved the blue popped collars and bathtub reinactments!!!
ice cream's picture

hmmm.... "divorce ranches" back then

if ne one has seen the original movie The Women.... the main woman character (sry.... forgot the name lol) has to go to a "ranch" so she can get the divorce papers.... just a guess but i think back then u had to go to certain states to become divorced. m not sure that all states had the ability to divorce people.... again just guessing here. that movie was done in 1939.... not much of a time difference (meaning this movie, as u all said, was 1950's). maybe that's why she was at that ranch....

good thing she went to that ranch tho (in this movie) lol :). proved very interesting.... and prob. a little insightful.... overall i thought the movie was good.

Vivian and Kay

I'd be really interested to see a sequel, if there's such a thing.... because the difference between the two characters is so huge. Vivian is a highly educated and accomplished career woman and Kay, a young 'hippie', sort of. Their relational dynamic is charming to me, but I wonder how it would work out in real life or in long-term. We all gravitate towards our own kind, but these two break that mold. Curious to see how this type of relationship would develop.

The atmosphere in the movie - 50s in Nevada - is so exotic to me, but somehow I was taken in.....

mustang_sally's picture

If I'm not mistaken

I believe Donna Deitch has a sequel in the works.  It will be very interesting to see how it plays out.
ice cream's picture

possibility of a sequel to Desert Hearts

well.... Deitch says she wants to, and is in the process of, creating a sequel. i've read that she wants to have it set in New York in the 60's, (am assuming that'd be another period piece type thing), and it will have Vivian and Kay in it.... but they won't be the main characters. i'm pretty sure what i've said is correct.... just google Desert Hearts sequel to find out if that's right :).

Hi girls, I'm a huge fan

Hi girls,

I'm a huge fan of your reviews which i found both funny and interesting.

I' m from France and I think you should try to review some french films, these are two of my favourites:

- la Répétition by Corsini with E. Béart. There's a georgous love scene in it.

-La tourneuse de Page .

I'm sure you can find english subtitles.

Otherwise if you just wanna watch english spoken films then  what about Mulholland drive. The lesbian storyline is not the main theme of this film but, to me, there's one of the most beautiful love scene between 2 women.

 A ++

frosch411's picture

Oh I agree with the love

Oh I agree with the love scene and the beauty of E. Béart and P. Bussières in La Répétition, but then this movie is another prime example of lesbian depression.. sigh!

Thanks for your requests.

So many lesbian films, such little time.  We will for sure get to foreign lesbian films. Thanks for watching.

Divorce in the 50's

Back in the days when divorce was shameful, you could get a "no fault" divorce in Nevada or Mexico.  You had to stay for weeks to establish residency to get a "quickie" divorce - really not so quick but great for the local economy - hotels had guests, restaurants had customers, casinos had gamblers, lawyers got clients, courts got fees etc...

And we got a wonderful movie location for great movies like "The Misfits" and "The Women" and "Desert Hearts"...

Your COMMENT ROCKS!

Thanks for your comment. It's so interesting to read about divorces in the 1950's. That really clears up a lot about what was going on in this movie. We love the fact that with every Retro-Review show that we do, we get so much great information about these movies.  Thanks so much!

I found myself smoking whenever Vivian was

Most enjoyed the vlog, the rubber ducky song especially.

When i played rugby we had naked communal showers together after a match, not for socialising mind, does that count?

Only seen half the film due to dvd scratchs, damn it. So have purchased another one and muted whilst you talked about the ending.

The slow pace isn't bothering me, (unlike personal best, which i only managed to watch for 5-10 minutes), the transitions remind me of Star Wars and I keep thinking an x-wing is about to fly over head. The film really drew me in emotionally in certain scenes when the two were together and i'm really looking forward to the second half.

Don't worry about the lass above, she sounded a bit harsh. She could've been nicer about it, manners and tact are still important in cyberspace. You're doing your best and the last thing you'll need is someone giving you shit. You'll have other things in your life and might not have time for deep research. It's a blessing that you're doing the vlog at all. You're doing a top notch job and I for one am greatful for it.

Thank you.

Thanks!

Hey - thank you so much for understanding where we're coming from - that's much appreciated. While we certainly wish we had the resources for a research assistant (and five cameras, and a real director, and a switcher, and a swanky wardrobe department and maybe a nice caterer...) the reality is that we're all putting ourselves through grad school and working, so if we mess up sometimes, it's not for a lack of trying.

How about

reviewing Amour de Femme?  It's another French film request and also one of my favorites.

Very entertaining this week ladies.  The bath scene re-enactment was too funny.

Please keep doing exactly what you are doing! love your reviews, and not because I wish I was 15 years younger, you all would be in big trouble!!

Thank you

LOL.  Thanks.  You are too funny.  Thanks for the love.

Ha-thank you!

Thanks for that! Though, we may be a little bit older than we look. The camera adds ten pounds and probably subtracts ten years. Hey, you win some, you lose some :)

that love scene still turns me on

Here I go, I just fall in love again.

Desert Hearts was and still remains a "classic."  We were all in love with Patricia C., and cheered when she finally seduced Helen.  Well, okay.  I still find that love scene hot.  I appreciate your comments, and your ratings.  And I'm still in love with singer Anne Murray, young or old, and I can't help myself, I fall in love again.  I've been a teacher, and I've been the seducer, and let me tell you that seduction scene was pretty authentic, and among the best.   <smile>  Love from a happy lesbian.

Retro Reviewing Virgin!

Okay, so this was my first viewing of the Retro Reviewing v-log! Great job, ladies! "Desert Hearts" is the movie that made it all click for me as a 20-something coming out, so it's a joy to see the next generation appreciating it for the pillar it has become in the lesbian movie genre. I personally had a hard time deciding which actress was  "hotter" when the movie debuted, and still do! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys for watching and the helpful comments. Glad to see we got new viewers and hope you guys keep on watching. Love the fact you think we are so young...we really arent that young I'm afraid!

You're welcome

Anyway, you're all adorable.  Take that as a compliment.

DH!

Desert Hearts is definitely one of my faves. It's an oldie but goodie. That love scene still ranks as one of the greatest - and the kiss in the love scene is the best - straight or gay - that I've seen in cinema. I really love the intimacy and lack of sound used in that scene and the nerves played by the professor, which I believe were an influence on so many films in the future regardless of orientation - from Aimee and Jaguar to Unfaithful. I disagree about any enthusiasm about the in-the-works sequel. I really don't want to see these two together when they are even older. I think the magic was in their meeting and subsequent romance, and the train ending was all I needed and my imagination can do the rest. I don't know what this need-to-know thing is that the public has, and why they can't just let something rest on it's laurels. I think characters should be allowed their secrets and the freedom to live out the rest of their fictional lives without everyone eavesdropping.

great movie

this movie is so great. powerful sex scene. great love story. i haven't watched too too many but this is my favorite lesbian movie so far
