This week, Michelle accidentally devotes the entire episode to the feud between Perez Hilton and will.i.am, and takes the time to question whether or not Perez is a good representative for the GLBTQ Community.
Most importantly Michelle wants to know your thoughts on if Perez is someone you want as a gay spokesperson.

Could not have said it
Honestly...
When I first heard about the altercation between Perez and Will.i.am, I couldn't help but think that Perez kind of had it coming. Granted, I don't wish and certainly don't approve of violence in retaliation to Perez's comments, but the guy talks and rips about anyone and everyone daily, and if you talk trash about people, it's bound to bite you back in the ass.
As for Perez as a spokesperson for the GLBTQ community, I can say without a doubt that unless he gets his act together, then he's not exactly the most ideal representative we could have. I mean, I'm just imagining that to someone who's never met anyone from the community, or knowingly met anyone from the community imagining that we're all like Perez, and the image is not a good one.
Perez
I have never been a fan of Perez Hilton - and I can promise that I have never been one of the millions who visit his site -- I have as much respect for Perez as I do for Elisabeth Hasselback.
I just feel like for anyone to become and accidental "celebrity" does not give them the right to talk out of their ass like their word and opinions are good as gold. I am sure I am not the only one in the GLBT community that is, more often than not, embarrassed by his actions, statements and behavior.
We have so many barriers we are trying to break down right now, the last thing we need is someone behvaing so juvenile and feeding into the this social sterotype that has been created on our community. I am glad that there are people out there speaking their minds and being themselves, but have some class while doing so.
he is a disgrace
he is about the worst figurehead possible for the community. it sickens me that so many people must go on his site and think that gay men are all like that.
he makes his money and fame out of exploting others. although i wouldnt condone violence i think that how he treats people on his website is even more hurtfull. if you take the way he talks about lindsay lohan for example, someone who has had her fair share of issues, its a miracle the girl even leaves the house.
i think hes absolutley blown it now. he posted this on his blog before Jackson's death was confirmed
http://twitpic.com/8et2f
thank goodness we have people like rachel maddow and that we have some great straigh allies in the media
What goes around comes around...
Great ranting as ever.....
Love how passionate you get about all these topics!!
I don't know much about Perez Hilton (weather thats because he's not so prominant over here in the UK or just because I don't tend to read general 'gossipy' columes I'm not sure) so I've only heard about him outting closeted celebraties (which I don't agree with) and adding to the rumour mill, all of this adding to the 'bitchy' and gossipy gay male sterotype and his persona.....all of which is passable and there is certainly a huge market from the figures you said, but what he said was absolutly unacceptable!
If we don't want f****t and dyke ect slung at as us derogativly, we can't sling it at others, as that only reinforces the view that is acceptable to do so! I think, like you said, weather he likes it or not, he represents the LGBTQ community to the general public as he is a high profile gay man, the same way Ellen and (now) Portia do. This means that he has to take responcibilty for what he says and the way he acts. It would be the same for any high profile minority (weather that be religion, race, sexuality, political belief ect) celebratary/blogger/vlogger ect what you say and do reflects back on all in the community as many of the people you are reaching out to and communicating with only have you as a representation, however distant that is from the truth.
What bothered me reading a quick blog about the incident, is that Perez originally refused to apoligise to the community. That to me speaks volumes about him and his respect for the LGBTQ and his understanding on his impact of representation of us.
Yes Will.i.am was wrong to attack him no question, (although the cause of the attack is unclear from what I can find on the internet) but that doesn't make what Perez did ok.
At all.
I guess what I'm trying (and hopefully not failing) to say is that I wouldn't be comfortable with him being a gay spokesperson as he doesn't appear to have much respect for the community and the impact that he can have on the general public's view on it.
EDIT: after reading the comments that were posted between me starting and actually posting my comment (yes it did take that long lol) I looked at the link that strict_machine put up, and I think it just confirmed that he is indeed an idiot! Micheal Jackson may not be the most loved person after the aligations, but at lest find out that hes stable (at the lest) before questioning the reliability of the situation.
I re-iterate, I wouldn't want this man as a spokesperson.
hes out of line
i saw on queerty yesterday that now he wants an appology from GLAAD.
Interesting to see this statement from the Mathew Shephard foundation
http://www.matthewshepard.org/site/PageServer
wow
strict_machine - 2 great postings - I am glad to see that the Matthew Shepard org is not feeding into Hilton. Thanks for sharing!!
Infuriating!
On what grounds I wonder, can demanding an apoligy from GLAAD, make sence?!? the more I read about him, the GLAADer (sorry couldn't resist, I love a bad word play :P) I am that I don't have anything to do with his website!
Very interesting statement, well written, thoughtful and an un-inflamatory (is that a word? is now!) way of seperating Perez's comments with orginisations and people that are helping to show tolerence to the general public! Agreeing with smasoni!
woe is he
Thanks for all these great
so bizaare
Perez
I totally agree with your views. The sense I get from him is that he rips down people.. Very negative.. Thats why I like watching your videos. Very supportive, uplifting and intelligent and thought out topics.. I don't think he is really a true spokesperson. Spokespeople don't make fun of other peoples problems or rip them apart with foul language or gross photo editting.
A true spokesperson, like you, Ellen, AfterEllen people, BeaverBunch.. etc.. Support, uplift, educate, inspire and comfort.
Being negative and feeding off of the darkness is not good.
Being a positive light is far far the greatest thing.
...thank you michelle...
...your passion on the subjects at hand is what keeps people coming back and watching you....i don't think you can ever get too emotional over something you feel hurts the very part of you life that you seek to inform, educate, and receive equal rights...and i would like to take the time to thank you for being such a great represenative of the lesbian community...i think i can speak for the majority of us when i say that you passion has inspired us to get more involved...or at least more informed...about major issues we face as a community...it is people like you..as well as the rest of the afterellen staff...who seek to counteract the negative stereotypes that other individuals of the community unfortunately portray...so thank you and keep up the good work!
Perez Has Issues!
I don't condone violence. I never liked Perez Hilton. I know everyone has their opinions, but I feel like he crosses the line every time.
Honestly, I think there is a bigger issue at hand. I think he may have been teased when he was growing up and it seems he gets off by making other people feel the same way. The elementary school ridiculing picture doodles. Come on. People in grade school do that, when they wanted to make fun of someone.

My thoughts exactly... he
Very good point
Two Thumbs Up To You Michelle
This is one of best vlogs/vblogs so far by you. I'm seeing a side of you that I wanted to see.
I agree with you 200%. You highlighted everything about Perez Hilton issue. I also wanted to add the whole fiasco was caught on camera which probably will be used in court if a lawsuit is filed and pending. However, will.i.am did not hit Perez. Will. i. am. 's manager did. It's the fact at first Perez indicated will .i. am. did the physical altercation and it pissed me off. It also makesPerez Hilton a liar. So if 10 million viewers are logging on to his site. Those 10 million viewers are being fed daily lies by this man who claims he cares about LGBTQIA comm and he doesn't.
Seriously, the so "leaders" of the LGBTQIA community shouldn't back him up. As my mom would say this word "instigate", Perez instigated the altercation and that is extremely dangerous. The judge probably will take that into consideration.
We need to focus on people who are actually doing good for the community and not on ones who are hurting the community.
Michelle you fall in that category. I changed my mind on commenting on here. I find your thoughts and insights interesting. Keep on doing what you do.
I have never liked Perez
He said stupid shit and
i mostly agree
but i dont think that i face any discrimination as a white person, quite the opposite which isnt the way the world should be but hopefully things can change.
the problem which we face is of all those 10 000 000 people that visit his blog, a great many of them will think thats what gay guys are like. he is like a caricature of the worst stereotypes of gay men. and alot of the people that visit his blog are not going to be the people that will watch or see the people that we can be proud of as public gay faces. i dont want to generalise but hilton's demographic arent exactly the same as rachel maddow's or wanda sykes's.
we shouldnt have to appologise for him and i certainly wont but to alot of straight young people perez is what gayness is about. its sad but thats the way it is. cos theres not alot of out gay people in the public eye
Quote:but i dont think that
Right, niether do I (and I didn't mean to imply otherwise). By using that as an example, I was trying to point out how absurd it is to take one person as representative of the whole, or to ask a community to throw one of their own under the bus for the sake of appearances. For some reason, people feel free to do this with minorities (blacks, gays etc), but if anyone ever implied that all white people are like Bernie Madoff (or any of the other numerous white guys who stole from and cheated the American public), no one would take it seriously. No one in the media would write a story with that tone, you know what I mean?
Anyway, I'm definitely not defending him as a person. He's said countless asinine things, and he definitely seems to have a serious problem with women. I just don't like the tone of some of the coverage (and I'm also not referring to this vlog or AE's coverage, just to make that clear).
absolutley
I don't follow Perez... but
I don't follow Perez... but I saw some of the video on youtube. I love the Black Eyed Peas, though violence it just seems so 90s. But didn't Perez already apologize? I think the dude obviously has some issues, but I think it was all stemed from genuine fear, insecurity, maybe humility.
What he said was wrong, and I'm not taking sides, (I just don't care that much), but I think he was just trying to hurt one individual not the community. I don't think he even realized his fault there. I just think he was consumed with anger maybe adrenaline and just didn't think how this might affect others. He was stupid and juvenile, but I think people are entitled to mistakes if they show remorse. We're only human.
Just my two cents.
He is infuriating..
I mean doodling semen on teenagers faces on his blog? Gross. I was never a fan, even before he made it pretty clear that he's a huge hypocrite. All that stuff with Miss California just got ridiculous. He may have disagreed with her (as I do and many others do) but that doesn't mean she deserved any of that media back lash. And now with this will.i.am debacle..uugh. I don't think physical violence is ever the answer but..maybe it was karma? I'm happy that glaad asked him for an apology, at the very least it shows that all queer people aren't like him and don't approve of his actions.
Anyway, loved your rant. I couldn't have agreed with you more.
edit: He also made a very disrectful blog post about Micheal Jackson being taken to hospital and promptly deleted it once he died, like I needed another reason to not like him. http://mashable.com/2009/06/25/perez-hilton-michael-jackson/
completely agree with you - unfollow him!
When I heard about the situation and saw his statement video, I was really, really surprised at the language he used. I didn't like it when he called Ms. California the b-word, because that's a word I generally don't like, but that he, as a gay person, used the f-word really infuriated me! I read his blog on a regular basis because he as a lot of celeb news, and I followed him on twitter, but after I saw the video I unfollowed him and I haven't visited his blog since.
I don't think violence is ever okay, but his reaction was not okay either. Calling Fergie names, when she did not actively harm him, is not okay. She was hurt by his words and I'm pretty sure she didn't tell the agent to punch Perez, so to lash out and call her names is not okay.
Jezebel also had a post on how Perez seems to get away with misogyny, worth the read (http://jezebel.com/5301152/why-does-perez-hilton-get-a-pass-on-misogyny)! I was always really annoyed when he wrote about Samantha Ronson and capitalized the 'man' part of her name. She's a butch, she's not a man and as a gay person I don't get why he doesn't respect her in her identity. He can critisize her as a djane or something, but the whole man thing is just tasteless.

Yeah, I thought it was
Yeah, I thought it was ridiculous that PH called Wil a “Fa**ot” SERIOUSLY!
Perez is famous WHY?
I'm not sure why people pay any attention to perez.
Nobody speaks for me.
tobie does have that couch. it's comfy!
Long-time reader, first-time commenter here.
Here's the thing. Perez Hilton is not some misguided soul. He knows exactly what he's doing. This altercation with Will.I.Am is just the latest ploy for media attention. He thrives in the controversy it creates. He wants people to talk about him, positively or negatively. He is the ultimate real-life incarnation of the Internet troll.
It sickens me too that people hold him up as a representative of our community. Perez cares about no one but himself. He certainly doesn't care about us, or whom he hurts.
I think we need to denounce him, then ignore him.
Perez needs to be voted off the LGBT island!
I think we all need to sit down at gay tribal council (of course, our tribal council area will be fiercely decorated) and vote Perez's ass off the LGBT island! He infuriates me so much. I know that the LGBT community is supposed to try to be as inclusive as possible, but the fact that he is such a public face for LGBT just makes me crazy.
Michelle, I agree 100% with you about Perez, but honestly, I don't think he has it in him to do anything good or positive with his psuedo-celebrity status.
The person above me describes him beautifully... "He thrives in the controversy it creates. He wants people to talk about him, positively or negatively. He is the ultimate real-life incarnation of the Internet troll."
Frankly, I'm surprised that Perez doesn't get bitch slapped on the regular. You can't continuously be that negative and hateful towards people and expect nothing to happen.
If you haven't seen his overly dramatic video response to being "attacked" by Will.i.am, you really should, it's great theatre. It stars Perez as the victim, of course. *sigh*
Seriously, can we get Jeff Probst on the phone so that we can take a vote already?

Really Really Perez
I haven't really been following this story as I live in the UK and never really took much notice of Perez until the media coverage of the incident at the Miss USA Pagent (sorry of this is wrong). Just the fact that he used the F word as an insult to smeone else as a member of the LBGTQ community is horrible. He is not a good representative for us.

"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light"
All I have to say is...
I completely agree
I am not a fan of Perez. I do not like him and I definitely Do not believe hes a good representative for us. As a community we should make this known to him. Heres an idea: each and everyone of us should go on his website and send him thoughtful, respectful comments on how we feel about his attitude and how he is representing us and how we would like him to put us in a nicer light with his actions to use his power for a good cause. Because its true, he has so much power and I hate when i see such powerful people having a negative influence on our society.
Bi-Lesbian: a woman who can be butch or femme interchangeably. :P
thats a great idea
You said every point
You said every point perfectly. Seriously. So I won't repeat what you said.
I realized Perez would never be a good representative for the lgbtq community when I first realized who he was. For a while everytime I heard that name I thought he was Paris Hilton's brother or something.
When I finally googled him and saw his page, I realized he would never be a gay member I'd want to see on my pride parade float..
HOW I realized this many may disagree with my source. It was the constant bashing of Lindsay Lohan in his articles. He still rags on her so much more than the rest. I understand Lindsay is no future UNHCR goodwill ambassador like Angelina Jolie... and I realize she is no church going straight laced lady.. but Perez, that does NOT refute the fact that she is the first OUT celebrity who is on the Hilton, Spears, Kardashian level of popularity.. she's the first teeny pop sensation to come out as a (part time) vagitarian. She's the star of mean girls which is every high schhool girl's bible for christ sake, and the star of that is out.. i'm sorry, but that's fucking awesome. I see it the same way I see Lance... another teen sensation, comes out.. it's so rare when it happens it's like christmas morning.
You'd think he'd embrace the .0000001% of celebs who are out!! But he slams her constantly like she's a joke. She's one of us, if anything he should at least be rooting for her success. He calls her names in articles like "LOLhan" and "LINSANITY" or she's "pAArtying" and the shit goes on. After reading like 5 articles of lohan on is site I've disliked him since. And everything since, I can't say I blame that dude for punching him. All my friends are guys, and honestly I'd probably tell them to do the same thing. Because honestly, some people just deserve to be punched in the face.
Can someone get me the managers number?? And then Ann Coulter's address? Thanks.

exactly
again, i dont condone violence but compare a slight bruise to that verbal violence. and its not samantha ronson to him but saMANtha.
if he hounded someone into the grave he wouldnt care, mock it then appear sorry
Perez Hilton
What got to me
My two pence.
Up until now I've never really had a problem with Perez Hilton; he's made a very tidy little 'career' for himself by just being a bitch, and while I don't necessarily agree with what he does, I understand that his persona is exactly that - a persona - and it's something he deemed necessary in order to be successful or popular or whatever. I always thought he was very aware of the nature of the beast. But then I saw his little vlog about what happened and my opinion changed. It seemed totally shocking to him that somebody punched him, when in reality the most surprising thing was that it took this long to happen. I don't condone violence and I don't like what happened, but this highlights that he doesn't know what a consequence is. Instead of taking the stance of, well I am right and you are wrong, he should realise that he played a large part in his own attack.
That he used the word faggot as an insult is just completely baffling to me. Maybe he thought that being gay gives him licence to use that word, and I suppose to some degree it does, but to use it as an insult? Again, the actions of a clueless man. Words are just words to him. That word was just another insult, that evening was just another day at the office, except it didn't go according to plan because he didn't have a monitor to hide behind, and now he's throwing his toys out of the pram.
Compare what he does to Kathy Griffin, for example; there is a woman that carves her stand-up routine out of bitchy stories and comments about celebrities and yet is always, always aware of what she does, of what she's saying, of who she's saying it to, and she's still loved for it. There is a very clear line there between Griffin the comic and Griffin the person. And despite what you may call her negative routine, she is a great LGBT ally. Cutting as she may be, she's smart, and that's why many LGBT people are proud to have her as something of a spokesperson for our community.
Notice how the same can't be said for Perez. He's not smart enough to be any kind of LGBT advocate and it's disturbing to me that so many people look to him as their token LGBT voice.

My thoughts
No human being deserves the verbal abuse Perez throws at celebrities. I find nothing funny in drawing cum on celebrity paparazzi photos or throwing insults at a community is supposed to be a part of. I visited his site for the first time the other night and that will be the last time I subject myself to his hideous so called humor.
But seriously, I want to know what goes through his mind, not only as a gay man, but a human being, when he makes homophobic slurrs about members of the GLTBQ community.
maybe he's gone mad with power/fame?......alright it's not even
Stop
I am sorry
http://perezhilton.com/2009-06-25-im-sorry
I'm Sorry
Filed under: Personally Perez > Sad Sad"People make mistakes. I have made many in my life, but this past week I have made more than I can count on one hand.
I am sorry. And I mean it. No one is forcing me to write this. I am not feeling pressured to say this. I am speaking out because I realize that the last few days have been more hurtful to me - and many others - than the repeated blows I suffered to my head inToronto
this past weekend.
I have been filled with incredible sadness and regret.
I am sorry that any good work I have done for promoting equality may be tainted by me reclaiming a hurtful word - that's been personally used against me and the gay community - to hurt someone that was verbally attacking me. It was stupid.
Apologizing for me is not easy. Writing this was not easy. Life is not easy. But everything happens for a reason and I will take away a lot of valuable lessons from this experience.
Violence is never the answer. Never.
Victims should not be mocked.
The "F" word will never be uttered from my lips again. Just as others use the "N" word to insult and hurt - or as part of their everyday speech - I challenge them to remove it from their vocabulary as well.
Hindsight is always 20/20, they say. I should have been the bigger man and walked away from an unfortunate situation. Instead, I chose - in a very misguided way - to stand up for myself and only made things worse by how I - under pressure, anger and extreme emotion - handled the situation.
I am sorry.
I am NOT apologizing to GLAAD. I could care less about them, my former employers.
I am apologizing to the gay community, to anyone who was hurt by my choice of words, and to all the people who have ever emailed me to thank me for all that I have done to fight for gay rights over the last few years.
I have reached out to Isaiah Washington, someone I incorrectly labeled a homophobe in thepast
, despite his own public statements that he was not.
I will be donating any money collected from my lawsuit against Polo Molina, road manager for the Black EyedPeas
, to the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
And I will continue to speak out for equality and support the great work done by LGBT organizations, such as LAMBDA Legal and HRC.
Sincerely,
Perez"
interesting
funny part about that is
as it was mentioned above, the Matthew Shepard Foundation refused to accept any money that he might get from that lawsuit b/c of his use of the word f----t.
Then to top it off he made of Michael Jackson while the man was dying then deleted his post after the man died and realized uh oh don't wanna get in trouble again.
http://globalgrind.com/content/776574/LONG-LIVE-THE-KING-MJ-BYE-BYE-THE-...
The site I just posted is a blog from Tila Tequila who took a snapshot of the post by Perez about Michael Jackson. So really if nothing else this week Perez has stuck his foot in his mouth several times. It's hard to be a computer warrior when people know who you really are isn't it Perez, oh well Karma is a b*tch.
"Come On Then Get These Good Done Debbies"
UGH
I'm glad he wrote this...it was the LEAST he could do. Not everybody who knows about this ridiculous fight is going to read that though. Mistakes like this, where you publicly yell derogatory words that are harmful to our community, will continue to do damage as long as that clip is up on youtube...and as long as Perez Hilton is somebody people follow.
It bothers me how he words certain things, for example "I am sorry that any good work I have done for promoting equality may be tainted by me reclaiming a hurtful word ".. he uses the "reclaiming the word" card! You're not reclaiming the word when you use it in the same manner as a homophobe would. You're giving that word life, in the worst way possible.
You KNOW somebody's doing a bang-up job of representing us when TILA TEQUILA is embarrassed by him. I feel like people should stop following him so closely, at least for a while. He needs to know that he can't do/say whatever he wants and still have millions of "adoring" followers.
www.myspace.com/emmahuntermusic
I agree!
There was no reclaiming at all in his use of that word. It was just hate.
You really brought the point home when you said,
"You're giving that word life, in the worst way possible."
I don't even know.
My opinion is that Perez Hilton has hurt more people with words than anybody could ever hurt him with a fist. He's a fame whore, and he'll do whatever it takes to be noticed. He's also a horrible representative for the gay community. I don't even know wth is with the "f----t" comment. I mean, usually he makes some semblance of sense, excluding whether I agree with his views or not.
But that was just stupid.
I never thought Perez Hilton
I don't even know what
I don't even know what happened between will.i.am and Hilton and I honestly don't care but I'm "really really" sure I don't want him to be a representative for the community. Someone who's deliberately outing people against their will is noone I want to identify with. HE, as a homosexual, among all people should know that there's reasons to stay closeted.
From some of the comments I read I take it that will.i.am punched him: I hope he punched him hard! Who is Hilton to talk anyway? What has he done to be this famou...?!?!
