Rachel Maddow gives in and buys a TV

In a new interview with Dossier magazine, Rachel Maddow admits she has finally given in and purchased a television:

I got drunk last Thursday and ordered one on Amazon! (Laughs) Susan and I ordered take-out Chinese and I made cocktails and then somehow it just happened. I mean, it wasn't like we were on some total bender or something — it was a weeknight — but I woke up the next morning and there was the confirmation email stating that we had indeed bought a $400 television.

Of course, since we were drunk, we had it shipped to the wrong place, so now we have to get this giant box all the way to NYC from our place up in Massachusetts and figure out how to install it. Neither of us have had a TV in years and years. The last time I lived in a house with the TV was in 1990, when I moved out of my parent's house to go to college. Now there's a giant box with a TV sitting in Susan's art studio waiting for us.

This makes me wonder what Rachel will be watching. She doesn't have a lot of free time, and she did not mention cable or a DVR. Still, I have my own ideas of what she might tune in to.

Gossip Girl

Rachel could easily be pulled into the teen drama about upper class richies and their overly-stimulated minds and bodies. She can compare their issues to the scandalous lives of Washington's elite.

Ice Road Truckers

The dangerous lives of ice road truckers appeals to many, and our favorite MSNBC anchor could be one of them — especially after missing out on years of great television. The History Channel might become a favorite on her television remote, if she figures out how to program it.

Arrested Development

I have faith she'd own all three seasons on DVD. (FYI Rachel: They have them on Amazon.)

Guiding Light

Is she catching up on the Otalia romance? It can't be politics 24/7. There's got to be room for a little daytime romance. Maybe Susan could tape them during the day, or they can catch up on SoapNet at night.

What do you think Rachel will be watching?

I'm thinking she'll be watching the 6 season-boxed set of our favorite lesbian drama!

Nah.

Rachel is far too smart to put herself through that.

.....

This post is hilarious:) The pictures on the TV screens are killing me...

Look at Rachel. She's so sucked in to each show, isn't she. I can sense the tension in her body language watching that truck half submerged in icy water.

I think she bought the TV to watch herself. There are so few lesbians on TV she must support the cause.

nice shirt

Okay, this might be a liiiiittle off topic, but, um...where did Rachel get that t-shirt? It's kind of awesome.

"Susan and I ordered

"Susan and I ordered take-out Chinese and I made cocktails and then somehow it just happened."

She sounds like she's trying to explain to her kid how little Rachel Maddow Jr. came to be.  "Bought a TV" is totally a euphemism for "made a baby."  Except not because, y'know, they're both ladies.

watching every season of Grey's Anatomy and blogging about how unfair the firing of Brooke Smiff was. And then falling kinda in love with Arizona, although not completely in love just yet because they're still more awkward than hot. But I digress.

amazing

The fact that she got drunk with her gf while eating takeout and ordered a TV on Amazon fills my heart with joy. She is the best ever. Can't even handle it.

Cool

This is cool. I wonder what kind of tv they bought. It only cost 400 dollars so it can't be a big tv.

Alcohol is the gateway drug that leads to TV watching!

There goes the Maddow Show!

pjrcdn -- that is truly clever, and likely not far off, that alcohol is the gateway drug that leads to tv watching.

I have for months hoped it would not happen -- that RM would never cave in. Once she knows the DEPTHS of mediocrity that passes for journalism on the other shows, I fear that even SHE, as amazing as she is, might begin to falter a bit. Kind of like how you work really hard on a paper in 7th grade, and then when you see what the other kids hand in, you're like, oh. ok. And you subsequently only spend 5 minutes during break writing your next papers.

And GOD help her if she happens upon that CRACK known as Otalia. Can you imagine?

Drunken Amazons?

Oh, wait...no...I read that wrong.

Some people drunk dial, some people drunk text; Rachel Maddow drunk-Amazons.

Ha.

Rumor has it that in addition to the TV, Rachel and Susan have purchased a cable package so they can watch all the Red Sox (ugh) games.

Now then....

If Rachel Maddow has a TV there is no excuse for her not watching Otalia. Otalia-palooza is sweeping the globe, and Rachel's never one to miss a beat! Maybe she can ridicule CBS whilst she's at it.

Ah...I heart Rachel Maddow. I think I will hear Rachel Maddow with a TV even more.

oh man, i've done that

oh man, i've done that before... but I have a tendency to drunk newegg.com more because i'm a tech nerd.

And there she was...

And there she was... wearing a purple shirt. :)

I'm guessing she's watching Otalia on Guiding Light!

Food Channel

I think she'll petition the Food Channel to have a show about the art of making cocktails... and then she can be a guest.

Cable Modem Too

I heard Rachel's interview with a local radio station in San Fran when she was in CA at the end of March, and not only do they have cable, they have a cable modem and high-speed internet access. As of that interview, Rachel had everything set up but had not turned the TV on yet out of fear of addiction. She had tried out the high-speed internet.

I think they will find that over the past 20 years, TV today may have lots more channels, but less to actually watch. They'll find a couple of things they like and maybe record (most of our cable boxes here come with DVR). I can see Rachel loving the History and Discovery Channels (and their relatives on digital). But I think it'll be used for Red Sox games and Susan can watch Rachel's show live without having to be in-studio.

My biggest bet is since they are both far more into the internet than TV, the high-speed internet connection will be the true love they find in their new tech digs.

I know the thing we missed most when the cable was out was the internet, not TV. We took our laptops and headed for anywhere that had high speed access and cheap food or drinks. My son and I watch very little TV, except Countdown and TRMS. We hardly ever miss them, and we get the podcasts just in case we have to miss them.

If they truly didn't want the TV, they could have cancelled the order the next morning when they found they had actually ordered it. It's probably been something they've thought about and discussed for a long time, and the cocktails were just enough lubrication to make them slide down the path to buying it.

But ya, the line

"Susan and I ordered take-out Chinese and I made cocktails and then somehow it just happened."

sounds more like explaining how that home-made sex video was made, where those compromising pictures came from, or how Rachel or Susan Jr. came along (except neither has a sufficient sperm count to make that happen). Most of us would not use that language to explain why we drunk-ordered a new TV from Amazon.com. I'm not sure we would feel the need to explain why we ordered a TV at all, but we haven't spent 20 years not watching TV either. That's why we love Rachel so much. She's on another plain of consciousness (the true geek one) and it's so funny, disarming and endearing.
