No on Prop. 8 PSAs spoof Mac vs. PC commercials

With new poll data showing that Proposition 8 (which would re-ban gay marriage in California) is suddenly gaining momentum, celebrities like Molly Ringwald and Margaret Cho have joined the fight for marriage equality by starring in PSAs that spoof the popular PCs vs. Mac commercials.

Watch all four very funny videos, and then send them to everyone you know in California — intelligent humor really is the best weapon!

Yay, Apple-esque!

It's great how they're done up like the Apple adverts ... just shows you how cool us queers are, because we're like macs ... look great, really ups your hip-factor to be seen with one, easy to use, and damn but don't you love playing with and touching them!

We're kinda expensive though ... but we last for ages! Unlike those other brands, who can be over and done with in a ... well, you know, really short time, leaving you all dissatisfied and unfulfilled ...

Yes, I'm a mac-head, why do you ask? ;)

But, in all seriousness, these adverts are wonderful ... CA is the battle-ground for this civil rights issue, and there is no other option than winning.

No on Prop 8!

These ads are awesome, especially the third one! It makes me so angry to think that Prop 8 might actually pass. God damn it - I want to be Californian so I can vote!!!

Election materials

As a Californian, I am scared witless that it is going to pass.  But at least the Secretary of State here is helping us out.  The wording of the proposition in all of our election materials makes it explicitly clear that a 'yes' vote takes away rights.  My hope is that when people see that, they will make the right choice.

Florida

I find it odd there's no campaign like this in Florida to stop Prop 2. I wish there were.
monica_ca's picture

My guess

I tend to think that the reason we haven't seen such a push in Florida (and Arizona) with similar advertisements is for various reasons.  One, it's my understanding that in neither state are they trying to actively 'take away' rights that already exist, but instead are trying to prevent rights being granted (I could be mistaken on this).  Two, California has FAR more people than either Florida or Arizona.  Three, lots of 'important people' live in California (ie, celebrities), especially when compared to Florida and Arizona.

Prop 8 ads

These are cute and I hope they make an impression on younger people who see them in various places on the Internet.

What I'm concerned about is their parents, who only see the lying Yes on 8 ads on televsion.  Those ads falsely state that if same-sex marriage is allowed, churches will lose their tax-exempt status, and schools will be forced to teach elementary school children about same sex marriage.  There are three No on 8 ads, two which have been running for a longer time which just say "be fair," don't take away our rights and a newer one that mentions that the Yes people are lying.

If undecided people have to judge between their church losing its tax-exempt status, their minister being forced to marry gay couples, their children being forced to learn in school that boys can marry boys versus this abstract concept of "equality," I think it is likely that most people will vote for their church and their children.  How are people going to know who's telling the truth?  They're only hearing the lies from the Yes people (over 50% of their funding is from the Mormom church and the Roman Catholic church).  We aren't telling our side of the story, just begging to be treated equally, hoping people will choose the constitution over their church.

I wish the No on 8 campaign was answering the lies more directly.  Why not have Governor Schwarzenneger or Senator Feinstein or the president of the State Bar Association or the Episcopal Bishop or a famous actor - Harrison Ford, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tina Fey - or all of them condemn the lies in the Yes campaign.  (I liked Ellen's ad.)  I'm no fan of Ronald Reagan, but when he came out in 1978 against Prop 6, the Briggs Initiative, (that would have fired gay school teachers), that was a big help in its defeat, especially with Republican voters.

No on 2

Florida is a conservative state.  Please vote no on 2. State law dictates that I, as a state employee, cannot leave my retirement benefits to anyone other than a spouse or a child under age twenty five. The state gets to keep the money I paid into my retirement account should I die. Just one of the things the right to marry would fix.

No on 2 in FL

I guarantee that I will vote No on 2 here in FL. What else can we do here? Besides talk to everyone else and try to convince them that everyone should have the right to get married to whomever they want to (and leave THEIR retirement benefits to who ever they want to and NOT to the state)! There was a police officer in Tampa that was shot and killed a short while ago, and they denied her partner the benefits that she should be receiving!

We need

more of these on T.V. I'm a Californian and I haven't seen many "No" ads - at least not in comparison to the number of "Yes" ads that are running. AND I see at least three "Yes" signs on my way home from school every day - where are all the "No" signs? Are we really that outnumbered or are we just being lazy about this issue? I was extremely surprised to even hear a few people in my GSA group at school say they "don't really care about the whole marriage thing". I'm not old enough to vote just yet but at least I give damn about the outcome! Grr ... um, but back on topic - these ads should really run more often. Maybe right after that one "Yes" ad about how horrible it is for a little girl to think she can marry a princess. >.>
mediamaverick's picture

These are clever ads,

These are clever ads, however I fear they preach to the converted.  The "Yes 0n 8" folks are flooding the airwaves with sensationalistic ads featuring SF Mayor Gavin Newsome saying something to the effect that gay marriage is here, "whether you like it or not."  The ads also feature a number of untruths about teaching homosexuality in schools, yada, yada.....problem is, we have to figure out a way to reach out and combat that ignorance....that ignorance exists not among the young and groovy mac owners, but among those in the Central Valley, OC, etc.....thanks to the Mormon Church (hey, what about their tax exempt status???) the "Yes on 8" folks are extremely well-funded.  I would love to see some of Hollywood's well-heeled stars, etc. pony up some big-bucks to help out the effort.  I sent in my donation....as much as I can afford, and if we all gave a little bit toward the cause, it could be the difference maker.....

these clips are pretty cool.

these clips are pretty cool. only that "yes" seems much funnier to me than that other guy. of course, that doesn't really make "yes" much more appealing.

Nathan's picture

It's about truth, not hate.

I am voting yes on Prop 8 simply because I fervently believe that no union between two members of the same sex constitutes marriage. I believe homosexual couples should have the same rights as married couples, but to define gay unions as marriages is to defile a divine and sacred institution that has, since its existence, involved husband and wife.

kalered's picture

TROLL Alert

Of course our AE members will ignore this fanatic. Nathan, are you not tired of your groups petty tatics like buying up the google ads to show your ads up on gay sites? Or going onto people blogs/forums and post your comments as means of advertisements? Nobody here will take your word or listen and since I see you posted at 2:35am means that you're not quite settled with the new poll ;D. People don't give up! I'm going to go to the rally on saturday to protest No on Prop 8 this Saturday and giving more donation to the cause! Don't let our right be trampled by religious anti-gay people! Love conquers All! VOTE NO ON PROP 8! Equality for All!

P.S. I am convince there's a group of prop8-ters going on the internet and doing their best to shut our voices

teanene's picture

It's about semantics

I just wanted to bring to your attention that your divine and sacred institution of marriage can be granted to atheists, devil worshippers, or just about anyone as long as one penis and one vagina is involved. So please explain to me just how allowing two men or two woman to marry can defile that divine and sacred institution.

WELL DONE

PSA 3 was too hilarious hahaha. PSA 4 was also great. I just don't get why banning gay marriages is such a big deal to the US government.
