Paula Patton thinks playing a lesbian is important in "Precious"

If you weren't familiar with Paula Patton before Precious, you should get acquainted with her in the new issue of Giant magazine.

Being called "the next Halle Barry" is a great compliment, especially for a relatively new actress like Paula.

Her first film was 2005's Hitch and she's only been in a handful since then. Fortunately for her, she's been able to land parts in fairly high profile films like Idlewild from the men behind Outkast and now in Precious, which broke box office records this weekend.

Patton plays Ms. Rain, a lesbian teacher that helps Precious to question her life's worth and her sexuality. In this great video of interviews, Paula discusses her love of Gabby Sidibe (the actress who played Precious) and why it was important that her character be a lesbian.

With so many other stars in the film, it's important not to ignore Paula Patton — she's going to be on our radar for a while. Next up: she's in a comedy alongside Queen Latifah. I smell lesbian icon status in her future.

Terrific that you mention

Terrific that you mention Paula on her own merit and not hitch her wagon to her successful husband (Robin Thicke). Also terrific that you mention her small role in Hitch. But what about DejaVu with Denzel Washington? She gorgeous - easy to watch on screen with (I think) more raw talent than Halle. And did I say - she's gorgeous!

Yup

That's her, when I came across that NY Times article I totally flipped 'cause she's hotness was a word made to define her. I posted another picture of the same article below!

She's awesome in all her movies. Man, you know what sucks balls?...I read the book "puch"(that's the book "precious is based on) anyway, so i read the book right and i was sooo excited about the movie, But how about they're not showing it where i live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is just so wrong!.

Thump thump

and effing SWOON.

Okay, so that was unnessary, but she's beautiful and can surpass Halle Barry.  I agree, she's far more talented, but I never could jump on the Halle bandwagon.

I can't even think right now.

yes!

i was just telling hank that...i kinda <3 paula for not shying away from taking this role or distancing herself from it. Or being all, 'ew, lezbunizm! i'm so heterosexual, i love penises, this was just a role' about it, as some folks are wont to do. This movie is...kind of a big deal. Yay for visibility! (my biggest fear about the film adaptation was that they'd leave out the whole 'Ms. Rain is a lesbian' angle. Cuz, ya know, Black folks can't be gay.)

also. the fact that she played in butch drag in the pictures Mély Mel'eau posted? Yes. I haz a new crush.

Robin and Paula

I love me some Robin Thicke and Paula Patton. They are my favorite celeb couple and he is always talking about how much he loves to have sex with her. Can you blame him? I can't believe they have been together since they were 15.

Oh Paula!

I Got Nuthin' But Love For Paula Patton

Thanks Mely for those photos  of Paual P.  Paula is so much better than Halle Berry.  She's not the next Halle.  There can only be one Halle Berry. Just like there can only be one Paula Patton. She had me at Deja Vu. Paula played a butch drag character.  I'm so lost at words.

Love.  It's all love Baby.

Robin Thicke ,dude is like  luckiest man on earth.

I'm so getting my hands the mag Giant w/ Paula on it.

Oh.My.Gosh!!!!!!!!!!!

Thud is the sound my jaw makes at that picture. I've been on the Paula P train since I saw her in Hitch and it has yet to let me off at a wrong stop. She's not only gorgeous and articulate, but there's a passion in her acting I haven't seen from a woman of color in a while. And the fact that she has always stood in her own spotlight as the wife of another celebrity, just makes her that much more amazing. Plus who doesn't adore someone that plays a lesbian (and does it right) not just for show, but because that character's story is important

Plain and simple, she's definitely lesbian icon worthy

I have to this point out again:

Oh my god those pictures!

Also what Cheeky Chester said.

If this movie doesn't come to Maine I'm going to be soooo upset! It's gotten great reviews and almost everyone in the cast is being recognized for their performances!

Fantastic

I saw her in her tiny role in Hitch first and then I saw DeJaVu, in which she was awsome and sooooo pretty! I agree with some of the other posters, much prettier than Halle Berrie...and hopefully she won't be making any bad female superhero movies either! I hope she starts to get the regonition she deserves.....I think shes awsome!

amazing woman

Wow. She seems so amazing. She is a great speaker (not to mention she has a sexy rhaspy voice to go with it) and seems to understand things pretty well. I love how she saw the lesbian part of her character as something more than just her sexual orientation. She didn't talk about how it was 'playing a gay', but how it contributed to the role and the story. I respect that a lot. It's hard to imagine someone so beautiful being so down to earth.

She's my new Ms. Honey (Matilda). I've always had a thing for the cute-yet-tough teachers. :P
