New Music Tuesday: 6-9-09

By now it's probably pretty impossible for you to stop singing "Boom Boom Pow." It's OK, honestly. It's catchy, it was made to be that way. It's the poppiest of pop and the Black Eyed Peas are non-apologetic of that.

So will you be buying their new album The E.N.D. today? It's their first album since 2005 (seriously, four years ago?), and primed with some dance hits now that Fergie is back from her solo excursion. And with her promise that there is some "girl-on-girl" business going on in the video for their next single "The Feeling," it might at least be something to pay attention to.

Here's what else came out today:

Sonic YouthThe Eternal (Matador Records)

After releasing several albums on major labels, the grunge punk band returns to indie for the first time in 17 years. Does it change the sound? No, but that's because Kim Gordon and co. have always managed to maintain their stripped-down aesthetic. And, dare I say, the infectious "Sacred Trickster" is one of their best tracks ever.

Lynda CarterAt Last (Potomac Productions)

Most famous for playing Wonder Woman in the TV series, Lynda Carter has also been a singer, both as a recording artist and Broadway star in shows like Chicago. At Last is her first album since 1978, and is a collection of standards, including the famous title track, which has to be one of the most frequently covered songs ever.

Nanci GriffithThe Loving Kind (Rounder Records)

The Grammy-winning songstress releases a new album of four covers and nine original tracks. The oft political-themed country-soaked contemporary folk CD is going to do well with fans of Nanci herself and the kind of music her label releases from labelmates like Allison Krauss and Martha Wainwright.

Will you be stopping by the record store today?

marina & the diamonds

honestly, im actually having a hard time even getting into Boom Boom Pow. definitely hadnt realized it was their first new material in four years; Fergie did a great job with her solo gig, and I might actually be more partial to her album than BEP's.

anyway, what im most excited about this week: Neon Gold Records just dropped the new Marina & the Diamonds EP yesterday, and it's fantastic. she's been compared to La Roux and Little Boots (both of whom i adore), but id say there's a lot akin in her voice / music to Thao Nguyen as well. Check out "Seventeen", and "Im not a robot" - both are awesome.

"Obsessions" reminds me of Regina Spektor...

...taken down an octave, with a bit of Sia thrown in. It's one of those tragically beautiful piano pop songs. Has to be one of my fave singles of 2009, hands down.

Excited that someone else digs Marina + The Diamonds! They're definitely worth a listen.
