New Music Tuesday: 6-30-09Let me start by saying that I'm sorry I didn't give The Cliks some love last week. I did do a review in Sound Check, so I was giving the new Gossip album some attention since I was finally able to get a listen to it all! But since so many of you are fans of the queer Canadian trio, I'll give them some face time, like with this wonderful photo:
Since Dirty King came out last week, you've probably been able to hear tracks like single "Career Suicide," which make the alt-rock album stand out from other modern rock songs from today. This time around, the line-up is stripped down to frontman/guitarist Lucas Silveira, bassist Jen Benton and drummer Morgan Doctor, and the songs are also a little more stripped down and rawer than 2007's Snakehouse. Silveria appears on the album cover with his shirt off, seated in a boxing ring, hunched over from being punched in the face and gut. He recently told Spinner.com: To me, it was about exposing vulnerability. That's the intention behind it. This album has some places that are really dark and vulnerable. I felt a lot of hurt and really exposed as a human being in places that I never, ever would've thought. That is me taking a few punches.
It's a great concept, and a great album. Check it out of if you haven't already. Here's what's new in stores today: The Fiery Furnaces — I'm Going Away(Thrill Jockey Records) The eccentric brother and sister duo of Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger release their eighth full-length this week with their blend of art rock and folk-pop, citing inspiration from the television show Taxi. It's an acquired indie taste, but if you dig bizarre soundscapes, you'll like The Fiery Furnaces. Tanya Tucker — My Turn(Saguaro Road Records) The country singer, author and celebrated TV personality returns to music with covers of men's country classics. She puts a spin on songs like "Wine Me Up", "Lovesick Blues", "Ramblin' Fever" and "Oh Lonesome Me." If you've loved her before, you'll love her again. What's on your playlist this week? tanya tucker!
ohhh, im totally getting her new one! ive been a sucker for her ever since Delta Dawn.
my recent picks: anything involving Marina & the Diamonds, Florence & the Machine, Discovery (Vampire Weekend + Ra Ra Rio = bliss), Miike Snow (check out his ridiculously sexy remixof Passion Pit's "The Reeling", or the amazing "Animal") and Sunset Rubdown (im a huge Spencer Krug fan, but the massive presence and importance of Camilla Wynne Ingr is evident on their newest LP, Dragonslayer)
