New Music Tuesday: 6-22-2010

Mia is M.I.A. today so I’m filling in for this week’s New Music Tuesday. You might recall I wrote this column way back when, but gave it up to my music-loving friend. She’s been doing a fabulous job, no?

Sia’s second solo album has been long-awaited, and you won’t be disappointed with what she delivers. It’s pure fun electro pop with the Aussie’s trademark vocals and vibrato.

The multi-instrumentalist dresses in drag on her album cover, and that’s not the only thing subversive about her. Homeland is a collection of experimental avante-garde rock produced by Lou Reed. Fans of eccentric artists like CocoRosie and Hercules and Love Affair will dig her track with Antony Hegarty.

Miley is trying hard to become relevant to music listeners other than teens and tweens. With this album, she steps away from her Hannah Montana alter-ego and sings more sexualized songs like the title track and also “My Heart Beats for Love,” hew new song dedicated to “gay fans.” She’s angling for the Lady Gaga crowd, but doesn’t quite have the aesthetically pleasing appeal.

The vocalist-turned-actress returns with her first album in three years. Although she isn’t likely to recreate the popularity of “I Try” with any of the tracks on this CD, she has found success lending some of her songs to TV campaigns on Bravo and Ugly Betty. Her voice is still the same throaty rasp-tinged alto it was before, so don’t expect anything new.

Neko Case guests on this album from the Canadian folk-pop singer. Give a listen to single “Captive” and you’ll have a good idea if you will like the rest of Oh Little Fire or her previous work.

Cyndi sings the blues. It’s all cover songs and features collaborations with Johnny Lang and B.B. King. Her voice isn’t necessarily suited for the genre, but it’s fun to hear her try.
