New Music Tuesday: 5-5-09This week, you might just break the bank on buying music — and that's not necessarily a bad thing. There are several albums worth spending your money on this week, so let's get right down to it. Ciara — Fantasy Ride (Jive Records) You've probably heard her single "Love, Sex, Magic," which features Justin Timberlake, but the rest of the CD features other hit makers like Missy Elliott and The Dream. Consider Ciara's newest your summer soundtrack. St. Vincent — Actor (4AD) Annie Clark's follow-up to her debut Marry Me should prove to be just as dreamy. Her single "The Strangers" will be enough to keep you interested in what follows. If you're just discovering St. Vincent, I highly recommend listening to "Now Now" from the last album as well. Peaches — I Feel Cream (XL Records) The ultimate electro-queer artist, Peaches sings a little lighter on this album, which is actually quite a pleasant change. Is she channeling the likes of Lady Gaga? Maybe, but she does it better on songs like the title track. Tara Jane O'Neil — A Ways Away (K Records) Out singer/songwriter Tara Jane O'Neil is not like most other musicians that could be prefaced the same way. A Ways Away is her K Records debut, and her prolific songwriting about relationships and real life situations are both poetically heartbreaking and pleasing. Also, Mirah guests on the album. Katie Melua — Pictures (Universal Motown) Having released this material in the UK in 2007, fans of Katie's might already be familiar. However, getting your hands on a hard copy in America. A hit with gay women, her album cover features the pop-rock songstress in a leather jacket. This might be a need-to-own. Submitted by on May 5, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

"The Promise" by Bif Naked
She's back with a new album; the songs were written while undergoing chemo therapy - and I like all of them!
The album's in stores across Canada as off today... Don't know if it's out in the US as well...

Not in U.S. stores, but
you can purchase CD or download from her website (www.bifnaked.com). I got my CD yesterday, and love it.

St. Vincent
I LOVE St. VIncent. "Your Lips Are Red" is probably my favorite song from Marry Me ('Now Now" is a close second, though).
not a photo of TJO
indeed!
Mika Miko
Love Annie Clark!
Another new release this week: Mika Miko. All girls group from Cali, sounds like modern Bikini Kill.

Flunk!
Flunk has a new album coming out this week, too. Yay for Norwegian synthpop. Anja Oyen Vister's vocals are so amazing, def worth the look-see.

I've been listening to
A Ways Away
Looks like a trip to the record store is in my future: I absolutely loved Marry Me--hands down one of my favorite of 2007--and I can't wait to see Annie Clark has for us on Actor. I'm also looking forward to picking up TJO's latest...her music is enchanting.
The video for Ciara's lead single with Justin Timberlake was all kinds of wrong, so her latest album definitely is not on my shopping list (though, really, Evolution should have cemented that decision for me).

If You're a fan of St Vincent
Then you need to catch this rehearsal video of her for SXSW - she has some nifty guitar work here:

highs and lows!
Peaches' I feel cream = spectactular. Ive been obsessed with Talk to Me for the last month and a half, and discovering that the rest of the album is just as good = awesome.
as for annie clark's latest, i like a few tracks, but on the whole, it's not nearly as catchy as Marry Me.
also, check out the sound of arrows. fantastic pop bliss.
