New Music Tuesday: 4-14-09Artists are getting creative in order to continue to make music — or at least, if they want to get it heard. Jill Sobule (the original "I Kissed a Girl" songstress) was not above asking fans to help contribute funds toward the recording of her new album. Lucky for her, they were not above helping!
California Years is the product of Sobule's fan base, in which she rewarded donations with prizes including a free digital download of the album, an advanced copy and a 'Thank You' in the liner notes or free admission to all of Sobule's shows for the year. And for a $1000 donation, Sobule would write you your own personal "theme song." Three big spenders, however, donated $5000 and received special performances at their homes. The album is sweet and happy indie album in true Sobule fashion. Fans will be proud of tracks like "A Good Life," and glad they helped make it come to fruition. Also out this week: Grand Duchy — Petits Fours (Cooking Vinyl Records) Violet Clark's vocals are a throwback to 1990s female rock singers, when they would frequent mainstream alternative radio. With bandmate Black Francis (aka Frank Blank from the Pixies), Grand Duchy play dreamy and undeniably catchy indie rock. Metric — Fantasies (Last Gang Records) Emily Haines is one of today's most underrated songwriters. Most well known for her sexy and bittersweet vocal style, she also makes her own solo music as well as Metric's songs all single-worthy, with extended metaphors and romantic allusions that makes Fantasies come to life. Tasha Ree — Training the Skeptics (Blueleaf Recordings) Tasha Ree is a electro-pop artist that just wants you to dance. If you like fun, mindless songs that sound like they borrow from familiar tunes of '80s and '90s past, then you wouldn't mind if songs like "Do You Feel Me" played while you were out at a club. Ida Maria — Fortress Round My Heart (Waterfall Records) Fun, fearless and talented beyond belief, the Norwegian singer is like Lily Allen with substance, a raspy voice and rawer production. Check out her re-worked album with the song "Oh My God" and you will see what I mean: She's sassy in the best of ways. Submitted by on April 14, 2009 - 11:30am. |

ida maria!
totally radom coincidence: this morning, i decided to do a 5 am youtube music post, and was surfing around after watching Telepathe's So Fine, and found Ida Maria, and fell in love with / posted Oh My God. all of Ida's videos are totally kooky, and her music is sort of... off... in this incredibly infectious way. (also check out: I like you better when you're naked - who wouldnt?!?) trish, i like your taste.

NAKED!
Ida Maria
i like you so much better when you're naked.
Hm...
I noticed that she has gone on record saying her music is ``for girls''.
Interested song title...
Ida Maria
A little note... Ida Maria is Norwegian and not from the UK.
She's amazing!!!
She already say it
(About Ida María) " the Norwegian singer is like Lily Allen with substance..."
Thumbs up for "I like so much better when you are naked" i think i will play it next time i feel shy in the right moment . "Stella" is great too with that shout in the way of Marlon Brando in "A Streetacar named desire".
Thx for discovering me Emily Haines. I love the pic ( the 2 in the middle are hidden themselves of the photographer under the hair while the extremes ones no, good play ).
p.s. Tricia do u know Gemma Hayes?, Irish gorgeous singer? maybe u wrote something about her and i didn't. "Horses" is one of the most beautiful songs i never heard ( From her second album and my favourite one " The roads don't love you").

love all her work -Metric, BSS, Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton !!
Ah Metric
I bought Metric's new album Fantasies over a month ago. Pre-ordered! And I've been listening to it everyday since they put it up on their myspace. It's an amazing album! My faves are 'help i'm alive' 'sick muse' 'gimme sympathy' and 'collect call'. Those are #1 for me, but the rest of the album is so worth listening to. Honestly, the entire album is just 100% goodness.
Metric is <3
And Emily Haines ... oh my god. That woman is gorgeous!
Totally agree!
I'm addicted to Help I'm Alive. Also Gold Guns Girls is cool.
As well that, I agree about the fact that everything she touches turn into gold. Knives Don't Have Your Back is a fantastic album. Plus she is wonderfully hot.
She and the rest of Metric are playing at the Electric Ballroom in Camden soon, is anyone going?
Best New Music Tuesday ever
I've been a huge fan of Metric for about 4 years now... and I agree Emily Haine's is totally underrated. Everything she touches turns into gold!
Ida Maria also is very good... like I said Best New Music Tuesday ever.

all i'm wishing for now is to see them live..
ps: anyone who likes metric:
check out their dvd "the rawside of metric" which is .. wow.. i can't even describe it..
YES!
Metric. Ida Maria. Tasha Rae.
LOVE IT.
Especially Metric's new cd. I got it on iTunes, and dear god - it's brilliant. I never get sick of Emily's voice - sweet yet powerful, a strong example of what Canadians have hidden. One of the bests in the business, yet she rarely gets the credit she deserves. Just goes to show ya - the best artists just do it for the joy.
:]
Metric
I saw Metric live a couple of years ago. My life will never be the same again.
Knives don't have your back
Seriously,
Emily Haines is my dream girl. And her solo album "Knives don't have your back" is incredible. But I'm not sure if I'm feeling this new pop-ish recor. I guess I'll have to give it time.

Not just that!
Not just that!
She is a member of Broken Social Scene and she sings lead on "swimmers" and "Anthems for a seventeen-year-old girl." She also provided vocals for the Stars (Amy Millan, singer in the Stars, is also in Broken Social Scene.)

Also try Brendan Canning's "Something for the all of us." I bought it on a whim and I love every bit of it. Amy Millan is on that album as well. BSS sticks together.
