New Music Tuesday: 2-17-09Actress-turned-singer Zooey Deschanel has lent her vocals to her She and Him bandmate, M. Ward's new solo album, Hold Time. The indie singer/songwriter also sings alongside Lucinda Williams, making the album a little bit country, and a little bit of his folky-brand of rock and roll. Fans of She and Him will enjoy the collaborations with both women.
Also out this week: Various Artists — Dark Was the Night (4AD/Beggars Banquet) If you enjoy indie-pop, you will not be disappointed in this AIDS benefit album. Featuring tracks by artists like Feist, Cat Power, Blonde Redhead, Ben Gibbard among several others, there are duets between the acts as well as singular songs. It's for a good cause, and the music is well worth owning with not one throwaway song included. Alela Diane — To Be Still (Rough Trade Records) A psych-folk singer from Portland, Alela Diane releases her second album on a larger label with better musicianship and more accessible songs. Fans of Tara Jane O'Neil and Joanna Newsom will like her style. Sutton Foster — Wish (Ghostlight Records) The Tony Award-winner has created a covers album that's a mix of jazz and cabaret, and includes tracks like Patty Griffin's "Nobody's Crying" and Carole King's "Up on the Roof." I'm the first to comment!
Love these sections; music makes the world go 'round (or, at least, my world). I'm going to pick up the She and Him album as soon as I can. But, for today anyway, my ipod is shuffling Yelle's album.

dark was the night
been waiting for this to come out for months!! the tracks are amazing - theyve been screening them daily on myspace - and there are some fantastic covers (antony, feist & ben gibbard). the sharon jones and arcade fire tracks are awesome, too (AF's "Lenin" was almost on Neon Bible). plus, the national!! i actually heard a radio show hosted by aaron and bryce dessner discussing all the songs that were donated for the cds, and it's really a great album for a great cause. ordering this rightnow!

Great artist.
Chan and Alela...
are both amazing artists. I'm a huge Cat Power fan, love her voice.
And if you have the chance, see Alela live. She'll get the whole crowd quiet.
