New Music Tuesday: 12-02-2008

Not too much excitement at the record store this week, as we're so close to the end of 2008. The only big release that could rival the return of Britney Spears is R&B singer Akon's latest, Freedom. However, I think Spears will reign supreme, if the current media blitz is any indication.

Britney SpearsCircus (Jive Records)

Whether you think she's nuts or could care less about her woes, the pop star has positioned herself as having a comeback with her latest CD and single "Womanizer." She's embracing the idea that she was a chaotic mess, and claiming to be past it now. As long as she's got all the right people behind her and she can stay away from umbrellas and beauty salons, she could be a success story.

Various ArtistsCadillac Records Soundtrack (Columbia Records)

Nevermind Sasha Fierce — it's Beyoncé who shines on this movie soundtrack. She stars as Etta James in the film, so naturally she has her own renditions of "At Last," "Once in a Lifetime" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" on the new release. Also featured is her younger sister, Solange, with "6 O'Clock Blues."

The DecemberistsAlways the Bridesmaid: Volume III (Capitol Records)

Once a highly favored indie band, now The Decemberists are being pushed by their major label in a big way. This is the third release in a monthly series featuring singles by the Colin Meloy-fronted group, which presently includes multi-instrumentalist Jenny Conlee. The Bridesmaid series should hold fans over until the band's next full-length hits stores in spring 2009.

I'll admit it

I'm such a huge Britney fan. I've loved her since she first made her apperance on the music scene, and I own all her albums; I'm really looking forward to this one.

I'm sort of half glad The Decemberists are getting some sort of recognition, but at the same time I'm pulling the annoying indie-fan card and hoping they don't burst out and become the next American Coldplay or Snow Patrol, and all young adults and teens start to like them just because they're the 'in' indie band. And I swear, indie bands start sounding different once they gain mainstream success, their sound becomes more pop and easy-to-swallow, and if The Decemberists were to go down that path and let go of their melancholy rawness, it'd be so disappointing. But somehow I don't see them going down that path!

circus!

honestly, im loving the britney album! ive been posting tracks of it for the past few weeks, and im still impressed by how much she's grown. and ill admit to dvr-ing the britney doc on MTV on sunday night. she's had some really big missteps of late (though id argue a lot of that is because she got way too famous, way too fast, and the paparazzi are enough to make anyone bat shit crazy), and it's good to see her back on top.

my faves are probably Mannequin, If you seek amy (in which i like to pretend it's totally sapphic when she says "all the girls want to f u c k me"), circus and amnesia.  good stuff.

oh, and always the bridesmaid should be good - Valerie Plame was a great track. colin's always enjoyable, and it's good to see them getting some facetime.

Not me.  I love that song and its been stuck in my head since the first time I heard it.  I wouldn't really say I'm a Britney fan but I gotta say I love this new album.  And have you seen the video for Womanizer??  Yowza!  She is looking decidely tasty!

'oops she did it again'

lol..I like that new album cover, beautiful. Also, good thing the media is warming up to her again, so I don't have to see some crazy tranny in question guy screaming 'Leave Britney Alone'. It was fun to watch, but damn it was it CRAZZYY.

But anyways if you have to buy one Album, BUY AKONS, it's way better lol
