News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Morning Brew: Monday, Nov. 30

Good morning!

Leave it to Beth Ditto to plug other lesbians in The New York Times. As this Sunday's featured Playlist interviewee, the singer shared one of her favorite new bands, Explode into Colors and said she knew them from around Portland. "It’s like six degrees of lesbianation," Ditto said of her home city. "There’s so much overlap." Portland and everywhere else, B. Ditty.

Explode Into Colors, Playing Six degrees of Lesbianation

We're not the only ones hoping for Gretchen and Claire to get together on Heroes. TheFrisky.com listed the Heroes roomies as one of the couples they'd like to see hook up. I'm already thinking of their couple name: Graire? Cletchen? Sweeps lesbian kiss that will likely lead nowhere? That's a little long.

Kissing for the first/last time

Out singer Holly Miranda wrote on her blog that her "sweetheart" Lola is in a music video for gay musician Chris Garneau's new single, "Fireflies." Not only is Garneau an amazing artist, but the video has a Legend of Zelda theme and Lola looks fierce as the princess.

Her name was Lola, she was a music video princess

Lesbian singer/model Samantha Fox was kicked off the UK's I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here last week. As soon as she left the show, she hugged her fiancee Myra Stratton and said "I've been waiting for a bath all week." Of course, this was turned into a headline including the words "lusts" and lesbian lover." I had no idea every time I took a shower I meant that I really wanted something sexy involving my lover. And all this time I was worried about hygiene.

Have you been considering purchasing a ticket to Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour? Perhaps this will win you over: A review of her show in Canada notes that there's a "lesbian orgy in a dentist's chair." Suddenly Sapphic admiration for the "Bad Romance" singer could rival that of gay men. Well, maybe if there are also more videos like "Love Game."

A pop star intent on making her live shows lesbian-friendly

Lesbian author and Pace University professor Karla Jay penned an open letter to her students that was published in this month's issue of political mag In These Times. In it she writes: "There’s a Stonewall Coalition at the university, but you don’t need that because New York City has so many queer bars and you have the fake I.D. to get in. You’re oh-so-out, though most of you can’t apply the LGBTQ words to yourself in my queer courses." Something tells me she's not so psyched on the young and the label-less.

Jamaican stage actress Camille Davis says her dream role is to play gay. "I look forward to different characters. What would be out there for me is playing the role of a lesbian. Like a 'butch' lesbian," she told the Gleaner. That's a role that might be better received somewhere other than Jamaica. Come visit us in the U.S., Camille!

Enjoy what's left of November!

I love Morning Brew.

I love Heroes and i hope that Claire and Gretchen hook up again (probably wont though).

P.S Gaga could have hardcore lesbian sex on stage and i still wouldn't go. Sorry i'm just not a fan.

Heroes

Gretchen is shown with Claire in the previews for the next show, so I'm assuming the story arc isn't over yet.

That news is definitely the pick-up I needed after being sick all weekend.  Now I REALLY can't wait to see GaGa from 5th row in Chicago this January!

Wow, seems like AE has no faith in the Claire and Gretchen storyline.

Burned Before...

I think a lot of AE readers lack faith in the Claire/Gretchen storyline from being burned so often from past storylines that hinted at lesbian/bisexual relationships and ended up going nowhere or simply being used to increase ratings during the "sweeps" months of TV and then to disappear once sweeps were over.

I always get excited by the prospect of any new lesbian or bisexual storyline making its way into any of the shows I watch, but I have learned not to get overly excited, just in case my hopes are yet again dashed.

These hints, hopes and wishes for more lesbian/bisexual storylines on our airwaves is why subtext, fan fiction and femslash is so popular... we figure that we'll at least get what we want from the shows/characters whether TPTB ever actually bring it to fruition or not.

Here's hoping that Hereoes will do right by all of us!

I'm not so into heroes but I

I'm not so into heroes but I like hayden she seems like a really sweet girl and she was so outspoken and passionate about saving the whales and such. Doesn't hurt shes hot too. Loved madeline since californication so I'd definitely like to see them develop this, I wont hold my breath though!!

Heroes

I'm doubting that the Claire/Gretchen pairing will be over any time soon. They just set off on an adventure together and I'm hoping that it brings them closer together than they already are. As for their ship name, I've given it a lot of thought as they're my favourite characters on television (next to Calzona) and a lot of people are really going for Claitchen, it's what I've seen popping up mostly, and I think it has a nice ring to it and it equally combines both of their names :)

The newspaper Camille Davis

The newspaper Camille Davis spoke to is called the Jamaica Gleaner, not the Gleaner news.

I'm Jamaican and I totally saw that actress in a play called Love Games about a year ago when I went home. I was quite impressed with her. Plus she's kind of hot.

She might be able to play a lesbian back home if the role is sufficiently caricaturized and ends with some tired moral that teaches the audience that nothing good can come of queerness.

In any case, it's heartening to hear someone even publicly expressing an interest in playing such a role.

Actually the newspaper is

Actually the newspaper is just called The Gleaner, which is what we call it back home.

I may be a little bit

I may be a little bit obsessed with the Gaga. It's a little ridiculous. BUT SHE'S NOT COMING TO TEXAS. not anywhere in this huge state of ours! booo. Random City, Indiana, yes, but not Dallas, Austin, Houston or San Antonio. I'm just a tad upset over this matter. Just a tad. I need her to bring the crazy down here, thanks!

Oooh

I love Explode into Colors :) such fun music

And heads up to the speech by Karla Jay!  I read the whole thing and have to say she raises quite a lot of issues I have been thinking a lot about. I like that she sees both sides of the pie and does not only criticize the students for lack of acitivism but also counts in the changing conditions surrounding them which makes it difficult for some to get involved. I think a lot of social movements are standing still because people focus on their own lives and might have the feeling enough has been done or they feel helpless and stranded. BUT activism is important and this self-centered, career-driven society has got to change if we want a future together!

Never stop exploring.
