Morning Brew: Monday, March 1

It's March already? I like it. Bring on spring!

Brazil's Big Brother fans might be bummed that lesbian housemate Angelika was ousted last week, but here's something that could cheer you up. She posed for several NSFW-ish photos for Paparazzo. Also, Playboy's editor-in-chief has apparently expressed interest in getting Angelika and her crush on the show, Cocoa, to pose for a cover shoot. As hot as the photos are, this definitely scares me. Both of these publications might have some lesbian readers, but they're a little more geared toward men — just in case you weren't aware. (Thanks Marcela!)

Lesbian comedian Kelli Dunham detailed her trip down to Haiti to help on her blog. Check out her photos and firsthand experience in visiting Port au Prince. (Hat tip, Holly.)

The Baby Formula is now available on DVD from Wolfe. Getting pregnant at the same time as your partner could be your idea of Heaven, or your worst nightmare. There's only one way to find out — well, there's two ways, but watching the movie might be easier.

AfterElton.com reader Mike sent us a note about a great new Canadian Hyundai Elantra commercial where a woman leaves a trace of her lipstick pucker on a note and places is on the car's windshield. When the owner returns, you find it's (OMG) a woman. They're obviously trying to give Subaru a run for their money.

The Daily Mail has a bizarre profile of Alicia Keys in which they keep mentioning lesbian rumors but without any direct comment from Alicia. They also cite that the rumors stem from "her acclaimed performance" as a lesbian assassin in Smokin' Aces. I'm pretty sure they surfaced before 2006, but that certainly didn't help.

Here's a little good news on the Coronation Street lesbian storyline. Helen Flanagan plays the Rosie, sister of Brooke Vincent's Sophie, who will be one of the girls exploring her sexuality on the show. Helen told The Sun: "The story's quite cleverly done. It's going to be implicit, not explicit, and we want that to come across. It's emotional and more about the feelings. You'll be surprised at how [Rosie] reacts. She will stand by Sophie. When you love your sister, you support her." Can't wait to see what happens when it airs in April.

The 2010 Whitney Biennial features two out women artists: Emily Roysdon and Sharon Hayes. The latter's piece is a four-channel video installation called Parole, which "focuses on constructions of gender, sexuality, and protest through public speech." And if the name Emily Roysdon sounds familiar, she's not only an artist, but sometimes performs with JD Samson's band MEN.

Legendary actress Marlene Dietrich is finally getting her due. She'll be honored with the first star on German's brand new Berlin Walk of Fame. Not only that, but she's getting her own biopic, in which she'll be played by Gwyneth Paltrow.

BBC Worldwide Productions bought the rights to the biography Dietrich's daughter Maria Riva penned, and will film it for both the BBC and HBO. So who will play her lover Mercedes de Acosta, the woman who also had an affair with Greta Garbo? I don't know, but they better put it in the film, or I know some lesbians who will be very angry. (Myself included.)

Leisha Hailey's Uh Huh Her counterpart, Camila Grey, will be playing keyboard on Adam Lambert's upcoming tour. It's a good thing Camila is so gay-friendly!

Anyone But Me creator Susan Miller will be on the Blog Talk Radio program The Cancer Show today to discuss sex and cancer. As she told us, "I've had them both!"

Check it out: Jane Lynch channeling Sue Sylvester in her NOH8 photo.

And lastly, SVU is really trying to keep us guessing about Wednesday night's episode. This Tweet from Kathy Griffin makes us wonder what's really going to happen on Wednesday night.

They sure do know how to get an audience going.

Chew on all that, and we'll talk more tomorrow.

Pretty sure you meant to write 'Sophie' there :) but I also cannot wait.

Gwenyth as Marlene>>

As a die-hard Marlene fan, I am NOT feeling Gwenyth as Marlene At. All.

I think Charlize or maybe an unknown would have been a better fit.  No, Gwen. Just...no.

I am totally with you here.

I am totally with you here. I am a huge fan of Marlene too and Gwyneth just so bland imo to play her. I am disappointed already .

Third.

Almost anyone would have been better.

If you want to know who

If you want to know who should play Marlene, just look at shortypants' profile pic.  Cate Blanchett would be great!  And after watching her turn into Katherine Hepburn, I kind of want her to play all my favorite classic film stars.

Alternately they could cast, I dunno... someone actually GERMAN!

Cate Blanchett as Marlene>>

Actually, after I had posted I thought about that very thing and got all excited: Cate would be GREAT as Marlene!

Or you know, an actual German actress would be superb as well. Spot on.

Again, I don't have anything against Gwen it's just that she isn't right for this part at all.

*sigh* I'm disapointed in this already and the script probably isn't even finished yet...

Ana (awesome)'s picture

Cate!!

Cate B...would be moreee than awesome in that roleee
Waka/Jawaka's picture

Cate would be good, but

Gwenyth has the eyes and mouth.  She can also do the sultry sexual stare better than Blanchett, I think. I will admit she was born to play Sylvia Plath, and she did it so well... it is hard to see her taking on another bio.

I agree with ElusiveJ about maybe getting an actual German actress...

I know, Gwyneth Paltrow is not at all the right choice

I know, Gwyneth Paltrow is not at all the right choice, I mean there are sooooo many choices it's rediculous she would even come to mind!!!!

Clearly my Hyundai Elantra

Clearly my Hyundai Elantra needs to start working a bit harder.  It has yet to pull any phone numbers for me.  So glad my car company is recognizing ladies who love ladies in their commercials, although they'd have to be pretty damn gay to beat Subaru.
Diotima's picture

Agree

I don't think Gwenyth as Marlene is a good choice, niether is Charlize but certainly much better. An actress with a "strong" personality is needed to play Marlene. I think someone as Hanna Schygulla would fit if she was younger of course.

Commercial for Hyundai is nice :).

Not getting my hopes up...

Can't say I'm happy with Gwyneth but I'd only be truly happy if Juliane Kohler was cast as Dietrich.:P

I'm not allowing myself to get my hopes up for this film because 1) I don't think Gwyneth Paltrow is right at all for the part and 2) I think the chances of 'very angry lesbians' is probably quite high.

I could be totally wrong and this could be surprisingly good though. Fingers crossed for that!

*face palm*

Really? Really? Gwyneth Paltrow is the best person they could cast to play Marlene...FFFFFFFFFF Hollywood.

Angelica, the most charismatic brazilian lesbian!

There is nothing to worry about, Angelica photos helps to reduce the prejudice against lesbians in Brazil.

These photos helped Brazil to understand that a lesbian can be feminine. I mean, a lesbian is not necessarily a butch.

Another thing, men and women access Paparazzo webpage.

We, brazilian lesbians, are proud to be represented by Angelica!

Today is her birthday! Happy Birthday, Angelica! We looooove youuuuuu!

Juliane Kohler

Juliane Kohler could be a good choice to play Marlene :).

Karina Miranda: Indeed, Anjelica is beautiful and sexy.  I watched the vids but unfortunately could understand only a little bit, however she seems very honest and outspoken about her sexuality!

Juliane Kohler>>

OK- I just looked this woman up.

Not only is she quite striking in the looks department but as a German actress, that's a major FTW! She would be an amazing Marlene!

Also, I didn't realize she was in 'Nowhere in Africa.' I saw that movie and it was superb and she was superb in it. It rightfully won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Phenomenal.

Gwyneth will rock!

I think this will be a comeback performance for Gwyneth. I can see her as Dietrich easily. If the script is good and they stay true to Dietrich's life, it could be an award-winning performance for Ms. Paltrow! It's in her genes, man...
imthey's picture

Gywneth Paltrow-Really?

I neither like nor dislike Gwyneth Paltrow, but when I read that she's going to be playing Marlene Dietrich I was honestly a bit aghast. I just can't picture Gwyneth Paltrow channeling Marlene Dietrich.

I just can't help but wonder if all Hollywood was doing was looking for a "name" actress to capitalize on, as there clearly would have been a lot of other suitable actresses that could have IMHO channeled Marlene Dietrich better.

I guess I should reserve my judgment and see what she makes of the role and hope for the best. At least I can always go back and rewatch the one and only original Dietrich in her roles if I want to be truly satisfied.

In response to the news that Paltrow will be portraying Dietrich, i will quote the great lady herself and say just one thing:

Quatsch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You Thank You Thank You

I though I had lost my mind after seeing that Hyndai commercial. I only saw it once (while watching the olympics actually) and in vain couldn't seem to find it again. I thought I was dreaming.. very glad I wasn't :)

Commercials

There are gay people in Canadian commercials quite often. I recently saw an ad for something to do with Ontario Health care or insurance or something and they showed a gay couple embracing as they looked at their car. They were men but gay content is gay content.

For the love of poop Alicia

For the love of poop Alicia Keys DID NOT play a lesbian in Smokin Aces.  They other chic was a lesbian... Alicia rod off into the sunset in the arms of Common.  That ain't a lesbian thing to do.

Nicole as Marlene

Nicole Kidman could be Marlene. She has personality and is a good dramatic actress.

as far as Marlene goes

Vera Farmiga WOULD HAVE BEEN PREFECT!

A German actress would be good, and there are plenty of good ones to choose from I'm sure. Maybe a relative newcomer as well.. (who can obviously handle such a role). Someone with 'presence' is key.
