Morning Brew: Monday, Feb. 8
I hope you all had a great weekend and not too many party snacks.
Good news, La Roux fans: Elly Jackson recently told the press that she doesn't want a label, but she finds both women and men sexy. "I can appreciate other women. Beyonce is beautiful. But I find men or women sexy. The Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal is hot and I've always fancied James Dean — but weirdly, I want to look like the people I fancy. I don't have a sexuality. I don't feel like I'm female or male. I don't belong to the gay or straight society, if there is such a thing. I feel like I'm capable of falling in love with other people. I'm not saying I'm bisexual, I'm just sexual!" Fine with me, Elly. Call me if Beyonce isn't available.

In other awesome news, Julie Benz has been asked to stay on Wisteria Lane longer than her original three episode arc. So we officially have another reoccurring lesbian character on network television? Just how long is "undetermined," but I still want to give Marc Cherry a hug — especially after reading Dana Delany telling EW.com that she does "more than just kiss" Julie. "We're taking things to the next level," she said. "I get to do it. I'm very honored." I am honored to be able to watch this relationship unfold. Also, it's about time.

Next month, another lesbian will be on TV for an undetermined amount of time. Carol Leifer is a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice, and she recently did an interview where she said she was most impressed by castmate Bret Michaels, hints that she inspired Ellen to go vegan and why she bought Michael Vick's handwritten apology from his dog-fighting trial. What she says is true: "Lesbians are really known for being animal lovers. Gay women always have so many pets." Two pugs, two cats over here.
Check out this Valentine's Day ad from Armani Exchange and then tell me if you think the women are really gay. Just wondering. Doesn't make it any less sexy.

Legendary performer Josephine Baker's adopted gay son has put together an exhibit of her "forgotten years" at the World Erotic Art Museum on South Beach. One of the things covered was her secret lesbian life. Said her son: She was "looking for tenderness that only another woman could show her."
One of our readers from Mexico has the inside scoop on a new TV series that will have a prominent lesbian character. Las Aparicio will begin production in March and the character of Mariana (Erendira Ibarra) is an out lesbian who will be in "every episode." Mariana is "a self-secure, confident, intelligent and witty aspiring actress who makes a her living as a chef for a small catering business she runs with [best friend] Julia." She's going to have a "major romance" and there will be some "very hot, hot scenes." I'm all for that kind of visibility.

Rachel Maddow doesn't want to get married. She told USA Today, "We live in the state [Massachusetts] where the right has existed for the longest, and we have not made a decision to get married. This spring, we will have been together for 11 years, and our relationship is serious and happy, mature, monogamous. We like having the right, and we think that everybody should have the right, but we're making our own decision about whether we should exercise it." Also: no kids.

Venice fans will love the latest NOH8 photo:

Also, it's quite likely you've already seen it since you probably follow Crystal Chappell on Twitter. If not, I sometimes doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion Otalia.
That's a lot to brew over. Check back tomorrow for more fun lesbian bits.

Dana Delaney as a lesbian worked for me once. I'm sure it'll work for me again (though Julie Benz is no Bette Porter).

Ooh, that's right. I'm
Why they didn't even kiss...
is totally beyond me. I don't think Jennifer Beals would have minded, or Dana Delany either. This particular "L Word" episode really pissed me off, just one more reason I'm glad it isn't on anymore. Still waiting for a real lesbian show, obviously I shouldn't hold my breath. But, it will be interesting to see Dana Delany and Julie Benz together on "Desperate Housewives". I loved Julie Benz on "Dexter", glad to see she got another acting job so quickly after being brutally murdered on "Dexter".
So is Elly coming out as
Dammit
on the armani exchange ad i
on the armani exchange ad i dont really think that those two girls are gay. in deed i wish that they were believe me! But i dont think that the guy that is featured in the center and left portion is straight. granted i dont know the models but that is what i think.
Are you serious?
"...and then tell me if you think the women are really gay."
They're Armani models. They were picked for the Armani look. Of course they wouldn't "look gay", even if they are: they'd "look Armani," just like all the other models in that and every other Armani ad.
seriously
I think it's kinda neat
And implied that the
Armani ad
Not sure if this is correct... it looks like...
The guy in the middle with the glasses is the guy in the same position in the ad with two guys. The woman in the middle with the glasses is the woman in the same position in the ad with the two women. Perhaps there are subtexts and messages to this ad... and the brand...
Can't wait to see Ms.
on the subject of gayish ads:
Who thinks THIS model looks totally gay(licious)?:

You're welcome.
OMG! SRSLY OMG!
Thanks for that photograph of...
What does 'looking gay' mean?
On the Armani ad and the question 'do they look gay?', a remark I've often seen made on some of the AE articles, I must ask what on earth does 'looking gay' mean?
There is no such thing as looking gay, as being gay has nothing to do with what we wear or how we look physically. While it is undeniable that many stereotypes and gender reversing roles have been incorporated into gay culture, they are just that, cultural, and not something espoused by all or even I believe by most gay people (especially in any other country besides the U.S.). Why is there always then the inherent need to criticize or question lesbian representation when it does not fit the (for me, old school) ideas of what lesbian should look like? In this case, always questioning when they look too femenine, as if you are not a real lesbian if you don't have some masculine traits in the way you look, dress and the other ridiculous stereotypes ascribed to lesbians (power tools, watching sports, and the rest of the inane examples). Have you ever questioned a lesbian because she is too butch?
It's time to get with 'the times'. It's 2010 already and we need to get past these anachronistic notions, or better yet, as AE used to do so well in its early days, have thought provoking debates on gay indentities and changing trends of our times.
Hrmmm. And it's only Monday!
"Espoused, inherent, ascribed, inane and anachrnistic?" Really? Over a magazine ad? Already? I like to ease into my week. Can you please wait until at least Tueday to start your women's studies seminar or Gays in the Media lecture, or whatever it is you're doing to take the fun out of everything?
Thank You!

Loving that
Tuesday??
Just a note that I didn't
Exactly
I totally agree with you
I totally agree with you SaturnaliaGirl! I get so damn mad with all this "look gay" rubbish! There is nothing remotely stereotypical about me, so does this mean I am not gay? I hate that gay women still think there is a gay look. As for whether these models are gay, since 40% of models are lesbians according to insiders and most of them do hook up with each other, yes it is very, very possible that they are gay! Why do people think "oh those guy models are so gay but the hot girl ones are so straight?" Gosh... annoyed.
sparkle motion!
Sparkle Motion!
I loved the reference too. :]

"Elly Jackson recently told
"Elly Jackson recently told the press that she doesn't want a label, but she finds both women and men sexy."
Way to state the obvious there Elly lol. As for people thinking she might be trans / etc / etc / etc / etc... she's not, she is a person who can find something hot about a man and woman. She doesn't need a label to validate her appreciation for both sex, and frankly, none of us need a label to validate who we like either. She doesn't have to stick to a label. She's a human being capable of falling for other human beings. doesn't matter the sex. Its as simple as that to me.
"Those girls on the ad are totally not gay"
Unless you know them personally, or these models have said in public that they are indeed gay/bi - you don't know for sure. They probably are, they probably aren't/ They are probably straight, or probably bi-sexual. We don't know. We can just have fun guessing, but i think its sorta rude to just state a person cannot or definetly aren't be gay because the 'vibes' aren't there lol.
What she says is true: "Lesbians are really known for being animal lovers. Gay women always have so many pets." Two pugs, two cats over here.
Eww, i hate animals.
I really love how the women
Yes! I love Gael Garcia
Yes! I love Gael Garcia Bernal too!

Who cares of those models are actually lesbians? They're hot.
