"Milk" gets nominated for eight Oscars

The Oscar nominations have finally been announced, and most of the categories hold little to no surprise. Largely, it seems as if critics appreciated films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire, Doubt and Milk the most, as other performances in Revolutionary Road, Wendy and Lucy and Rachel Getting Married were left off the list.

The gayest movie of the year, Milk, is up for eight Oscars: Sean Penn (Best Actor in a Leading Role), Josh Brolin (Actor in a Supporting Role), costume design, directing, film editing, music score, Best Picture, Writing (Original Screenplay). There's tough competition in each category, but the film definitely stands a chance.

Some of the other nominations include:

Actress in a Leading Role

Anne HathawayRachel Getting Married

Angelina JolieChangeling

Melissa LeoFrozen River

Meryl StreepDoubt

Kate WinsletThe Reader

Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy AdamsDoubt

Penélope CruzVicky Cristina Barcelona

Viola DavisDoubt

Taraji P. HensonThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Marisa TomeiThe Wrestler

Some women I thought I might see recognized were left off the list, including Sally Hawkins (who won the Golden Globe for her performance in Happy-Go-Lucky), Michelle Williams (Wendy and Lucy) and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire).

It is worth noting that M.I.A. is up for Best Original Song for the track "O...Saya" from Slumdog Millionaire that she co-wrote with composer A.R. Rahman. Her competition is Peter Gabriel's "Down to Earth" from Wall-E and "Jai Ho," another song from Slumdog.

What do you think of the nominations? Are there any surprises or glaring omissions?

Same old Same old

I just feel as if they picked about 5 of the most famous films of the year and put them in nearly every category, except for when it was unavoidable to chose another. Like Animated.

It feels like it's becoming such a joke. There are so many other films out there that deserve recognition, all the more, if they don't have a well-known cast.

Saying that, I do think Kate Winslet deserves the Oscar and Im glad to see Slumdog Millionaire in there too.

oscars!

i kinda agree with these nominations rather than the golden globes. i couldn't make it through revolutionary road because leonardo was so terrible in it. is it just me or does he play every character the same?

milk was kinda boring and corny. slumdog millionaire was good but not awesome. the curious case of benjamin button was the only one i'd watch again. (still haven't seen rachel getting married or the reader, but i'm dying to).

hmmm

i cant believe they snubbed revolutionary road! leo and kate are incredible, but not even a nod for best adapted screenplay? surprising.

milk was good, but im not sure i buy into the sean penn madness. he always strikes me as mildly... off. though i admit, once i saw the clips of the real milk & friends, the actors did do an incredible job of capturing their true characters.

mixed feelings on penelope cruz for vicky christina barcelona, though the woman is gorgeous. and i do love anne hathaway, but im surprised by her nom as well.

at least wall-e is up for best animated - how can it not win!??

Freida Pinto?

She's great and everything, but what exactly does she deserve an Oscar for? Being pretty?

I'm with you on that.

I'm with you on that.

Well....

Not the most surprising choices but I’m still a bit disappointed.

I had been hoping for Sally Hawkins to be nominated, it seemed that she might have half a chance since winning the Golden Globe and all. I also think Darren Aronofsky should have been up for best director. On the positive side of things Richard Jenkins is up for best actor for ‘The Visitor’ which I think is great even though he doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning.

Personally I think as I do every year that the Oscars need a big shake up so they actually represent the best films of the year but that’s not gonna happen. At least as it is some good films do get the attention they deserve.

Btw when you list the supporting actress nominations you’ve titled it “Actress in a Leading Role”.

I cannot BELIEVE I didn't

I cannot BELIEVE I didn't get around to seeing 7 of the 8 films with nominated females, and that the one I did see had the stripper. I am a terrible feminst.

curiously absent

Emma Thompson for Brideshead Revisited. Kristin Scott Thomas for I've Loved You So Long. Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road. Pretty much everyone in The Badermeinhoff Complex.

The inclusion of The Reader in any category other than adapted screenplay or set design/costumes simply astounds me. I sat in the cinema with three of my German friends as we cringed and cringed and cringed some more. Who on EARTH decided that the entire cast should speak with German accents? No one in their right mind would stage Chekhov with Russian accents, but for some unknown reason, German accents are go. It's beyond strange and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It spoiled what on paper could have been an excellent film. I would have expected Stephen Daldry to have done better. Much much better.

Well, with David Kross

Well, with David Kross learning so much english for the role and the fact that he was going to have a German accent, it was clear that his older version was going to have one, and then from there, his family. Even if the accents were off, it makes sense to me that they would try because it would have seemed even sillier to not try at a certain point.

The nominations are ok

Missed:

Daren Aronofsky - Best Director

Sally Hwakins and Cate Blanchett - Best Actress

and that's pretty much it. I wished Frost/Nixon would have stayed out of the competition as well. Smells like Michael Clayton! hahaha. Good movie but shouldn't be among the nomenees.

Viola Davis!

I'm so glad they nominated Viola Davis--she deserves it. With only one scene in the film, she makes you feel what's actually at stake. She's always been a fabulous actress, but she so rarely gets parts that are worthy of her talent. I'm looking forward to rooting for her on Oscar night!

wow. I can't believe that

wow. I can't believe that the academy didn't even nominate Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road. While it is a tough film to sit through one should not overlook the amazing performances!

Milk - so glad it's up for 8 oscars !!!

I went to see this on Tuesday at a special BAFTA screening and thought it was an amazing film.  If Sean Penn doesn't win an oscar for this then there is something wrong - he was absolute mind blowing as Harvey Milk fantastic acting.    It was such an emotionally charged film, it stirred everyone emotion in my body from anger to happiness and then sadness.  It was well acted, directed and filmed.  I urge every gay person to go and see this as it is part of our gay history - especially in US.

Well done Sean and Gus Van Sant for bringing this film to the screen.

I agree

I don't really care much for the Oscars, but I'm happy to hear Milk got that many nominations.

i'm with you!

MILK was pretty much one of the best movies i've seen in a long time and i thought the acting and the whole cinematography was really good! i would have been so upset if it wouldn't have gotten the nominations... and i didn't expect 8 of them because it's prude and homophobe america if i have to remind some people (it might sounds mean but for most parts it's true....)! i know we live in a mostly open-minded world but i didn't think the academy would be so cool about it after the brokeback mountain disaster a couple of years ago. and america isn't just NYC, LA and San Francisco...

just my short german opinion! ;)

good news

I need to catch up on some movies, but Sean Penn was totally AMAZING in Milk, wow I hope he wins the Oscar!!!!!!!!!  A great film for sure!!!! Excellent costume design too really felt like the times, plus the whole story was so well told I actually want to see it again in the theater, and that almost never happens for me.

Slumdog Millionaire was rocking too!!! But my favorite actor in the movie was the little kid who played Jamal's brother Salim at the youngest age, lol... am I the only one who was so wowed by the kid actors?  Awesome concept for telling a story, and the sound/ music was killer!!!

I am so eager to see Rachel Getting Married, Happy-Go-Lucky, and The Wrestler as well. This was a good year and there are so many movies I need to catch up on.

MILK

I am so glad, and relieved, that MILK got nods for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Direction and especially Best Picture.  There was a chance it could have gotten left out.

I'm disappointed

I haven't seen most of these movies yet (I keep meaning to, but I never really have time). But I saw I've Loved You So Long, and absolutely loved it so I'm sad to see the absence of Kristen Scott Thomas. On the other hand, I'm super-glad Milk got so many nods. The Oscars are quite often just about the 'popular' (well reviewed, critically-accalaimed) type movies, so I'm not completely surprised about the choices they made this year.

Super shocked

I cant believe Kate didnt get a nom for Revolutionary Road! And Kristin was amazing in Ive Loved You So Long...that movie was superb & should have gotten nominated for Best Foreign Film. Too female-centric I suppose.

Same as Doubt, brillant film, female-centric again, passed over for a movie like Curious Case!? That movie was soooo boring, not even Cate & Tilda could save it for me...

Why do i get the feeling that The Pitts are gonna make the Oscars theirs this year...hmmmm...

I havent seen The Reader yet, but Im sure Kate will be awesome (and im really rooting for her this year)...but the person i really want to see win for Best Supporting is Viola Davis...she was just amazing...perfection. Had me balling my eyes out in the cinema...she better win!
