Melissa Etheridge is disappointed in Elisabeth Hasselbeck

I'm really glad that Elisabeth Hasselbeck has found someone who loves her. I'm happy that someone (a man, of course) actually thought she might be worth marrying.

Good for you, Hasselbeck. Now it saves me from campaigning against you being able to be with the one you love (and who, for some reason, appears to love you back).

OK, I wouldn't do that (obviously), but I might campaign against her being able to speak her mind on The View if she didn't sound stupid and cry so much. (Having Whoopi and Joy there to keep her in check gives me the ultimate satisfaction.) But there are definitely times when I want to reach through the TV screen and give her a talking to, which is what Melissa Etheridge so subtley tried to do on today's show. (Click on the link to watch the video.)

Melissa Etheridge appeared on The View this morning and spoke for myself and other gays) who told Elizabeth Hasselbeck, "I'm disappointed in you." (That always hurts more than "I'm mad at you," right?)

"The rights of the minority should never be voted on the direct democracy of the majority," Etheridge said, quoting Thomas Jefferson and speaking on equal protection under the law. Hasselbeck acted like she agreed for a moment ("I didn't vote on Prop. 8. I wasn't there.") before the singer asked her, "So you're saying you're for gay marriage?"

Right as Hasselback attempted to backpedal on previous statements she'd made in defense of Proposition 8, co-host Sherri Sheperd brought the conversation back to Melissa's Christmas album.

What's wrong, producers? Too much political talk past November? Too close to Christmas for all that gay talk? At least Melissa put in her two cents to Mrs. Hasselbeck. Whoopi and Joy seemed to have fun watching, and Rosie doesn't appear to be invited back anytime soon.

It might be time to have another lesbian View to make Hasselbeck uncomfortable. Melissa, what are you doing after the holiday?

Yesss!!!!

So glad to see this footage. If there is one person on TV who I truely cannot stand, it is Elizabeth HasselFuck. Well, thats what I like to call her. She is just so narrow minded, it drives me CRAZY! Like you said, its good to have Whoopi and Joy keep her in check, but man she gets on my last nerve.

Glad to see that Melissa put her on blast. I wish they were able to talk about it more though.

We are all disappointed in you Elizabeth. VERY disappointed.

Oh gosh I can't stand Hasselbeck

OH GOSH WHEN I SAW THIS TODAY!!! I was like yay! Elizabeth on blast, by the extraordinary Melissa!!! I hate Elizabeth... she's so narrowminded! Yuck! And she was mad today cuz she wasn't invited to the Whitehouse party or whatever... she's so annoying. Now I understand why Rosie used to bicker around with her all the time!!! When are they gonna eliminate her from the show? Although I just tuned in because Melissa was announced to be in the show in her website. Props to Melissa by praising Whoopi on her support on gay marriage... and props to her again for blasting Elizabeth!HAHAHAHA When Melissa asked "So Elizabeth are you for gay marriage?" She answered with an evasive... uh she didn't answer! Geez it's so obvious she's so homophobic!
Melissa Hsu's picture

Ohhhhhsnap.

I love how calm Melissa was through the entire thing. She nonconfrontationally confronted Elizabeth right into a hole. It was brilliant.

Hassleback is so small. If she's trying to fill Ann Coulter's shoes, she's doing a pisspoor job of it...which is great for us, actually.

Am I the only one who can't keep a straight face when I look at Sherri Shepherd? She's just...so random. Her constant mispronunciations crack me up.

As I watched this segment this morning I was cheering out loud , saying thank you Melissa!!!  Elizabeth, you are a pain in the butt!!!!

Honestly, I have more

Honestly, I have more respect for people like Fred Phelps than I do for a tool like Elizabeth Hasselbeck.  Either you support gay marriage or you don't.....and if you don't, then why not?  Tell us that we're going to hell or should be put to death...that's fine by me, as long as you have the courage to say it to our faces.  Just don't blame your lack of support for us on your love of democracy.  It's such a slap in the face and  its just infuriating.

It still blows me away that she was the best they could dig up to replace Lisa Ling.

Liz...

Is a little mind in a big world. I haven't even watched clips from the show since the primaries. I already know what she's going to say...wahtever the Republican talkng points are for the day. I'm just thankful for the internet so that I can watch Melissa's part on the show...the only thing I am interested in hearing from The View.

They had something special with Rosie on there. She took a lot of crap...even from within our own community, but God bless Rosie for having the balls to stand up and make intelligent arguments for our community and our rights, even in the face of crazy opposition from every side. Whoopi has it easy being "straight" and all.

I love Melissa so much!

thanks for posting the full

thanks for posting the full interview :)

Its like some other people have mentioned, its extremely infuriating how she is so small minded and pathetic to base her views on how the majority of people think, or more so even be too afriad to actually have a view of her own!!

It would have been great if they had have had more time as you could see that Melissa was ready to voice her opinion and correct some peoples views and, even better, get that annoying woman to answer some questons by putting her on the spot.

....Good interview!!

I'm disappointed

that Hasselback still has a job. Of all the thousands of Americans that have recently and unfortunately lost their jobs it's off putting that Hasselback is not one of them. Her head is filled with helium. I await the day that her tether becomes loosened and she drifts to the top of the studio ceiling. Please do blog on that particular episode for those of us that have zero viewing tolerance of The View as long as one of those views is of this nincompoop.

honestly, whatever, no comment.

wanderrerr's picture

What idiotic questions.

What idiotic questions. What special rights are you talking about? If you have a point to make, then please, make it and quit throwing around incomplete sentences that make no sense whatsoever.

Having said that, I personally think it's about time the Right got  a better representative on that show. Elizabeth is entitled to her views but her views often sound like what she picked up from the talking heads on her drive to work. Since someone's already mentioned her here, I'd say Elizabeth pales in comparison to Ann Coulter who, say what you want about her or her views, seems to be quite intelligent.

woody-69's picture

Ok, thanks for the 1st part, but....

"Since someone's already mentioned her here, I'd say Elizabeth pales in comparison to Ann Coulter who, say what you want about her or her views, seems to be quite intelligent."

Let's talk. The woman is a complete tool who's total place in this life is to be sensational. She couldn't manage that on the merits of her views, so she is THE antagonist to end all antagonists. She and Rush Limbaugh could produce Satan's spawn.

wanderrerr's picture

"The woman is a complete tool who's total place in this life is to be sensational. She couldn't manage that on the merits of her views, so she is THE antagonist to end all antagonists. She and Rush Limbaugh could produce Satan's spawn."

Haha! That last sentence was funny.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that she isn't all those things, in fact, I'm certain that she is; however, I wouldn't question her intelligence. The woman can express her views quite clearly and has opinions beyond whatever's the Republican talking point of the day. Yeah, she makes outrageous comments now and then (particularly when she has a new book) but insufferable as she may be, I don't think she's dense by any stretch of the imagination.

cowardice

Watching people try to explain why they're against gay marriage is like watching someone try to brush their hair with their feet. Hasselback is too much of a coward to look Melissa Etheridge in the face and say "You don't deserve the same rights that I have."

What really cracks me up is the end, when she says "let's discuss it over lunch." Yeah, I'm sure rock star Melissa Etheridege wants to have lunch with reality show contestant and conservative tool Elisabeth Hasselback to discuss how she shouldn't be given equal rights.

Autrav19's picture

I totally agree...

...and I thought the same thing watching Mike Huckabee on Jon Stewart. It is so easy for people to write words or say something in a group of like-minded people, but when the issue is personalized one can really see how totally baseless their "arguments" are.
jen's picture

hmm.

while i'd like to pat melissa etheridge on the back for making elisabeth hasselbeck look like a moron who can't keep her opinions straight, I'M disappointed that the view, and sherri sheperd, halted the discussion like that.  though i don't watch the view, and really don't know their take on political discussions, i'd personally rather hear about the hosts' and guest's views on political events.  as you pointed out, it seems like they're afraid to step into that realm after the election.  apparently politics is something you shouldn't talk about, unless there's an upcoming election.

however, as we all know, prop. 8 and the other hateful amendments DID pass, and there is still a lot to be done now, not just immediately before the next election.  i wish more mainstream news and talk show programs would discuss this issue.  it's nice to read about it on afterellen and the advocate, for instance, but isolating the conversation to glbt sites doesn't help our cause with the rest of the population.  hopefully this issue will come into the limelight again soon.

Jodie's picture

oh yes I completely

oh yes I completely agree.... I know they only have a limited anount of time to talk on the show and they had to allow enough time for Melissa to perform...... HOWEVER I was extremely annoyed at how they halted the discussion, as you mentioned... especially as Melissa was clearly making a point and putting that woman on the spot to uncover her true feelings. At the end of the interview they said they will have her back for another interview on this topic...... a half an hour, or an hour of this would be amazing! (do not think it will be happening though)

elisabitch vs celesbian

yes...unfortunatley all shows have to follow strict guidelines regarding time because if they did continue the discussion they'd have to cut some commercials to make up for the added time which would not make the advertisers happy since they have a lot to do with funding

although i would much rather see elisabitch and melissa debate this issue instead of melissa performing

we havent really had any public televised debates featuring intelligent people with opposing ideas discuss prop 8 :(
Lil Bit's picture

Thank You Melissa.

I just so happened to be up before 11 this morning and decided to watch today's show. I was pleasantly surprised to see Melissa on the show and over-joyed when she politely stuck it to Elisabeth.

I honestly don't know how someone who's claim to fame is losing Survivor and that other small minded moron that's nothing but a D List comedian is on a television show. Both Elisabeth and Sherry both claim to be 'gay friendly' stating they still needed to send a wedding gift to Ellen and Portia but manages to uphold the 'majorities' right to discriminate. To fall back on 'it's the people's decision and we should abide by it' and 'letting radical judges impose their will upon society i undemocratic' is both insulting  and sad. Had we listened to that line of thinking, Brown v. Board of Education would have never come to light.

I too would rather have someone outright hate me then to have someone shake my hand while stabbing me in the back. The level of restraint that both Whoopi and Joy exhibit on a daily basis is commendable but damn what I wouldn't give to see one of them bitchslap Elisabeth and Sherry.

Jodie's picture

Spineless Producers

Although the producers' behavior was dismaying, Etheridge kept her cool.  I continue to be impressed by the context, history, and courage with which she presents her position.

This web site might help the rest of us:

http://www.equalmarriagenow.com/

It contains some damn effective and incisive talking points _ including Biblical self-defense.  (He wrote those pieces before the infamous Newsweek story came out, so to speak.)

It has helped me articulate  cogent, persuasive and grounded arguments for marriage equality.  And you're right, Miss Ketina: "Speak your mind, be the truth."

Hasselblech rescued

How ironic is it that Sherry Shepherd pulled the plug so quickly, supposedly at the direction of the producers, when poor Elizabeth is clearly losing the intellectual battle? Anyone remember how long it took to go to commercial when EH was attacking Rosie, despite the pleas of Joy Behar? Perhaps EH is just too fragile to survive an intelligent discussion...

My question is why is this woman on TV?

Is it that she is representing the networks real voice? probably.
Watching that video I noticed something else, the control over what was trying to be said by Melissa Etheridge, as she was trying to make a point Sherri Sheperd subtly put her hand on Melissa Ethridge's knee and directed the conversation back to her new ablum saying that that is why they had her on, and I thought the show was called the view.

Wake-Up and smell the control!

for every half-brained

for every half-brained right-winger there's an equally half-brained left-winger out there.. There's worse people on TV than Elisabeth, she just seems so much like a crazy bird because she's not saying anything any of us really like to hear. But as much as we don't want to hear it, there's a lot of people that do. That's why she's on tv. At least most people don't take her too seriously and doesn't have the bow-down believers like some other of the talking heads.

Personally, I can't stand any of the women on the view , aside from Whoopi. They never talk about anything constructive and all they do is try to talk over each other. It's the most annoying thing to watch and I can't believe it doesn't give people headaches.

sunnychic's picture

AMEN

amen sister!! They irritate the crap out of me. They are so rude. Always talking over each other, even their guests! Hasselbeck has no mind of her own, she just says what she has heard others say. Whoopi is about the only one I like. Joy isn't too bad though.

that fishsticking chopstick is so fishsticking stupid!!!! it's unbelievable!

argh! i'm so annoyed! she's one of those ppl that waste too many words on explaining why they are a*sh*les!!!

look at how sherri patted melissa's thigh as if saying to her "just let the stupid chopstick make herself look stupider on tv yet again..."

am i gona get in trouble for this? :D i hope not....

jenks's picture

Hasselbeck is lame

lol you can almost hear Whoopi and Joy sigh with disappointment when Sherri interrupted the conversation.
Leah's picture

I think it's ironic...

...that so many of us say we do not like her (or Sherri's) views, opinions, or stances on many issues, and that such beliefs are hateful. We say people that believe like they do are wrong for doing so. And it's ok to disagree, it happens.

But then we respond with critcism and ways of describing them that are rarely respectful or constructive.

I do not personally agree with many of the things they say, but I would never let my anger lead me to speak about them so harshly.

I know I can't force anyone to speak or think a certain way. I only ask that you consider the words you use.

They're just opinions, that's all. No harm done. I might have missed something, but I believe that no one spoke of threats or death wishes to her. No one is saying that they want her to die some heinous death or something of the sort.

We're just speaking of our complete and utter disgust for her. No big deal.

Survivor

...oh my goodnes!!!!!!

I only just realised who Elisabeth Hasselback is! The View has only recently been aired in Australia and so I have only begun watching it.

I remember years and years ago I watched survivor and had a massive crush on a contestant called Elisabeth who seemed like such a sweetheart. It's kind of disheartening to realise that one of my first crushes is actually a hate-filled homophobe.

Oh well, her loss, we could have been beautiful together!

EH

Melissa is one of my sheros. She is smart, articulate, passionate and brave. I have not been able to stomach The View for a while but, think it vital that there are lesbians and/or other smart progressives willing to counter the wealth of ignorance in which that show is enveloped.

I have always maintained that Elizabeth is about as deep as a kiddie pool.

Pyewacket's picture

Both Elisabeth and Sherri supported Prop 8.

Sherri might have even voted in support of prop 8 because she lived in California until she got the job on The View.  They discussed the topic on the show before.  Whoopi made it clear she was against prop 8 because as she simply put it, she has gay friends.

And Sherri made it clear she was afraid her pastor might get sued if he refused to marry a gay couple in the church (one of the many scare tatics by the pro-prop 8 people) and so she was strongly for prop 8.  Though she was still worried about what to get Ellen and Portia as a wedding gift...bless her heart.

As far as Elisabeth is concerned...at least she had the balls to voice the Fox News party line she regularly spews...about "activist" judges being wrong...and how the majority votes is the way to go on this issue...while Melissa was on the show.
