"Mamma Mia!": how can you resist it?

When the Swedish quartet ABBA was performing pop songs like "Dancing Queen," I wonder if they visualized the phenomenon it would become. From their dance hits came a Broadway musical, Mamma Mia!, and now a film of the same name, starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried.

The film had its world premiere in Berlin on Wednesday night, and the cast (which also includes Christine Baranski, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnon among others) was in attendance for the showing and the after party. If you have yet to see the trailer, it will give you a good idea what we can expect when it opens here on July 18:

Yes, that is Meryl Streep singing, and she seems to have some pipes. But we are all aware how frighteningly amazing Ms. Meryl is; it's Amanda Seyfried that is the breakthrough star of Mamma Mia. Up until now, she has served as part of ensemble casts on Big Love and in films such as Mean Girls and Alpha Dogs. As 18-year-old Sophie Sheridan, Seyfried seems like a shoo-in for good reviews, no matter what the outcome is for the film in its entirety.

If you were never an ABBA fan (which really seems quite impossible), Mamma Mia! seems like it could still be a fun summer flick to check out. Something tells me it might be hard to sit still and keep from singing along in the theater, though. Perhaps I will steer clear of seeing it in a theater close to Boystown.

But if you are into going to the theater that is of the musical variety (read: Broadway), the show is still open in New York City. Tickets might be hard to come by after the film comes out, though, so take your chance in Logo's contest for you to bring your Mamma (or anyone else of your choosing, but wouldn't she appreciate it?) to see it with you in the Big Apple.

I Can't Wait...

I can't wait to see this movie... every time I catch a preview of it, it makes me feel like getting up and dancing and singing out loud. I remember the first time I heard Meryl Streep singing... it was Amazing Grace in the film Silkwood and I was just blown away!

The music of ABBA is one of those that everytime you hear it, it makes you feel happy... so when you combine their music with the fantastic performers in this film, it only leads you to believe that this film should be great!

Amanda Seyfried.

Anyone who watched "All My Children" while Bianca and Maggie were on should also recognize Amanda as the actress who played Joni Stafford opposite Jamie, Reggie and as a part time woman of Fusion...before Joni disappeared into Martins' attic! lol

The Perfect Storm

I cannot wait for this film. There are only 5 celebrities alive whom I would care to meet; the 4 members of ABBA and Meryl Streep. Meryl Steep + ABBA=Mamma Mia= The Perfect Storm. I can't wait.

West End

I've seen Mamma Mia performed twice in London's West End, and LOVED it both times.  Just brilliant.

My first time, I was sitting second row.  The whole audience is on their feet at the end, dancing and singing along ... extremely good fun.  :)

Can't wait to see it on the big screen, particularly with this cast!

Oh how I love

Oh how I love Meryl! She is and always be my favourite actress, and is one on the view actresses I go see a film for just because she's in it. Have seen all of her films, except one or two from early in her carreer. Now, this is something diffirent, because the film itself is reason enough for me to go see it (yes, I'm a ABBA 'fan') That ms. streep is in it makes it all the more fun though! And she's singing again! Can't wait!

I have

seen every single movie that has Streep in it. In fact. she's the only actress whose movies I don't even check beforehand because... well if she's in it that's good enough for me.

I'm also a huge fan of ABBA.

So, for me Mamma Mia! is a stroke of genius. Sometimes, I give the Universe a big, fat A for arranging things exactly as they should be.

Meryl Streep!

Meryl Streep has to be one of the few actresses/actors I'll watch in anything - regardless of what it is. And she'll be singing in Mamma Mia which is even better!

I hope it will have the same buzz in the audiance that the sing along in the play has(fingers crossed). I just know it will be a great time! Looks like I have to start warming up the old pipes for the sing-a-long. *clears throat*

Off to London

next week. Plan to see it with my daughter :)

Wasn't an Abba fan, but in hindsight, their songs are pretty much irresistable :)

And with Meryl Streep singing and doing the splits, who can resist?

Meryl Streep's a trained singer

In fact, when growing up in NJ (I know, she's not much of a Jersey girl stereotype :-), she trained to be an opera singer from the age 12 on. Sing on, Meryl!

So excited!

Ever since I first saw the previews on Entertainment Tonight (and there have been A LOT on there), I've wanted to see it. I even preordered the soundtrack off Amazon 'cuz I know I'll love it. I want to see the Broadway show, but the movie should be good. :D

I can't bear it.

I love ABBA..I own ABBA gold and I went to see Mamma Mia very shortly after it first opened back in 2000. It was fantastic and I will never forget it. I think it helped that it was my first West End experience. Everyone was up dancing and having a good time.

But, I just cannot bear to even watch the trailer for this film! It makes my eyes burn!! I can cope with cheese and over the top acting in the West End...but there is no way I'm paying £7 to see it in the cinema. I don't know what difference it makes, but perhaps I'm just a film snob. I don't like mixing the genre of musical with film. It rarely works well in my opinion. Grease, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and Moulin Rouge are all fab and all classics. Anything else makes me want to vomit.

I love Meryl Streep but why oh why??

Amanda on Veronica Mars

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Amanda Seyfried's role on Veronica Mars. RIP Lilly Kane.

Best. Show. Ever.

I am looking forward to seeing Mama Mia

I am looking forward to seeing this film, but based on the trailer, the central plot (single mom living in coastal Mediterranean village, daughter wants to get married, three different potential dads show up for wedding, confusion ensues) seems to have been lifted from a movie from the late 60's, shot in Greece or Italy, in english. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the movie.  All I remember was that the actress playing the daughter was fine. (I saw the movie in the late 80's on the TV, not in the 60's.  I'm not that old!)  Any film buffs got a clue as to what the name of this older non-musical movie predecessor was?
Morgan's picture

Oh, Lily...

I am excited to see this.  Amanda Seyfried is pretty terrific.  And let's not forget her small, but pivotal (and adorable/amusing/snarky) role as Lily on "Veronica Mars" a vastly underappreciated show.  She and Kristen Bell were quite the dynamic duo!  I hope to see her career take off from here!

It's Ms. Streep...how can I resist???

I actually have wanted to see "Mamma Mia" for a very long time now and haven't been able to in my area.  If you add in my Meryl, I don't know how I could possibly go wrong by going to see this movie.

It has catchy songs that I know I will be singing in my car for months to come, just like I did with "RENT".  I love that they are bringing the broadway musical genre to the big screen.  I only wish more people would give them a chance in the hope of encouraging movie makers into being less timid about bringing more of them to the masses.

WOW

I went to see this on sunday and i loved it!! LOADS Amanda was wicked as Sophie, never really thought she was hot before...but after this film i certainly do!

I can't wait to see Mamma Mia!

I fully expect this movie to rise to cult status a la Rocky Horror Show. In fact, some indy theatres could do just that after first theatrical run.
HotHandle's picture

A fabulous hot "Mamma"!

Just returned from seeing "Mamma Mia" at the local theater.  Fabulous!  Blew me away.  I have always been a fan of ABBA and Meryl Streep, but wow.  Meryl deserves her 5,000th Academy Award nomination for her solo rendition of "Winner Takes It All".  A great actress who can sing?  She does take it all.

And when the whole cast dances to "Dancing Queen", the whole audience went wild!  Everybody clapped several times during the movie.  Not too many movies inspire wild applause, do they?

Last but not least, how many bands in the world have had not one, but two films feature their music?  "Muriel's Wedding", starring Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths, featured ABBA's music as well.

Go see "Mamma Mia", it will definitely put a smile on anybody's face.

I too love abba so mutch ... I can't describe how much I love this band. And I only has 23 years old. Their  “clothing” in those photos is simply unforgivable
