Joan Jett wants to convert you

PETA has enlisted several celebrities for its advertisements, hoping to convert both celebs and civilians into herbivores. Joan Jett, a dedicated vagitarian vegetarian is the latest to give her "Veggie Testimonial" on the organization's website.

Has she converted you? (To being a vegetarian, I mean.) OK, so maybe you love your turkey on Thanksgiving, but you can still appreciate she stands for something. Although I must say, using Joan's face and body is false advertising: No one but her can look that good at her age — vegetarian or otherwise. Results not typical!

You just have to love the video's cheesy ending: "Kick the meat habit and see how it rocks your world!"

Whatever you say, Joan. Are you available for home visits? I need you to survey my, uh, kitchen.

I'm already a vegetarian,

I'm already a vegetarian, but I wonder where JJ gets all her what I assume to be pleather clothes. Good pleather pants or jackets are so hard to find.

Maybe they are leather?

I didn't watch the segment because I'm at work right now, but you can absolutely be a vegetarian and wear leather.  I am.  Whether you can be a PETA spokesperson or not, who knows, but technically being a vegetarian just has to do with what you put in your mouth.

This week's Time had an interview with the founder of PETA and among other things she said just go veggie one day a week, if that's all you can handle.  You are making a difference even with that.

Vagitarian - LOL! I've

Vagitarian - LOL!

I've already tried being a veggie (my gf is one so it would probably make meals easier) but I couldn't do it.

already converted

I agree with her 100%! You're right, totally cheesy ending. You'd think they could come up with something better. Oh well, good message though! I think the environmental aspect should have more people thinking twice.

It doesn't matter who they get

I'd still eat meat. I respect people's decisions to be a vegetarian and I would appreciate the same respect.
Katie!!!'s picture

yes, but...

the argument in this case isn't about not respecting people's decisions to eat meat, it's about helping the environment, i mean, the organisers who run PETA might kinda want it for the animals' sake, but the main fact is that eating/farming meat is harming the environment, and since it's possible to cut meat out of your diet, they are trying to make a difference by doing exactly that!

i have been a vegetarian for the whole of my life, but my parents (who obviously brought me up vegetarian) became vegetarians after LIVE AID, in the 80's, because they thought that it was stupid, that the world was producing enough food materials (eg. corn, wheat etc) to feed everyone living in it, but these items were being fed to animals instead of humans.

They became vegetarian, not because they thought it was cruel to animals (which i've always thought, so i was a bit surprised when they told me their real reason to change) but because of the way farming animals had a negative affect on humans suffering on the other side of the world.

but now it is the environmental issue which needs to be addressed (although human hunger needs to aswell, in my opinion)

so there you go! that's my thoughts :D

Dearlylovedaimee's picture

You do realize...

I understand that people want to protect the environment. I happen to be one of those people. But I choose to do it in other ways besides eliminating meat from my diet. I just hope you realize that farming can also be harmful. As long as there continue to be living and breathing organisms on this earth, there will always be some type of destruction done to our natural resources.

I also believe you just proved my point. Just because I choose to do things differently, doesn't make it any better or worse then how you choose to do things. However, people who are part of PETA or any other radical organization don't seem to understand that nor do they care. If you don't live up to their codes or standards then some how you are this terrible person whose sole mission in life is to destroy our world. Sounds like the argument that fundamentalist Christians make about homosexuality.

Let's hope it's pleather

Let's hope it's pleather she's wearing and not leather.  Otherwise that'd be a tad hypocritical!

Hmm half vegetarian?

I go vegetarian on and off although, that really isn't vegetarianism,
But I can't do for a long time, I usually do it a week a month or more or so.
I like tofu and other substitutes though,
I wear a leather belt and I hope it's plether watch,
I can't find any fake leather belts for some reason?
I try to to support it as much as I can, I blame my mom for addicting me
to shrimp curry, chicken curry, etc, And yeah I'm aware of tofu curry and vegetable curry but hmm! Darn it ! Okay okay fine, I blame myself!

Hmm half vegetarian?

-edit- Sorry darn those double posts!

I'm a vegetarian

A real one, I mean; I don't eat fish or anything like that. I'm still not opposed to real leather. I have a lovely leather jacket I got at a secondhand store that I've been wearing a lot recently. I'm sorry, leather is just too sexy for me to get all up-in-arms about it. Fur is another story.

All vegan over here

I've been vegan for a few years (vegetarian before that for several more years) and for me it definitely started out being about animal rights. However, it has since evolved into also being about environmental concerns, not to mention my health. I definitly feel way healthier since cutting dairy out of my diet. In the end, for me, it just feels like a very simple thing to do that has a huge effect on the world as well as indivdual beings.

And all efforts definitely count! I love introducing my meat eating friends to yummy vegan food. It's win-win: They find new favorite foods and while they don't switch to an all-vegan diet they consider switching up their diets and cutting out the meat from their meals every once in a while.

As they say: Praise seitan. :)

Too bad it's PETA

PETA:  What an evil, misogynistic, I'm sorry but CRAZY organization.  There are so many better animal rights organizations out there.  PETA's only the most famous because they are the most detestable.  They do more harm than good.  I still love Joan Jett, and I'm sure her heart was in the right place, but she should research organizations better before she endorses them.  Or maybe she knows about their bad behavior but just doesn't care (um...doesn't give a damn about their bad reputation?  I'm sorry for that, it just tumbled out onto the keyboard)
Sophie's picture

Totally agree!

PETA are a bunch of insane hypocrites!!! I mean seriously, they PRETEND to be all about animal rights, but they're so not! Never mind the fact they execute all those cute little healthy kittens and puppies, because its the "humane thing to do", they want everyone to be vegetarians and ban horse racing. What do you think they want to happen to all the cows, sheep, pigs etc, and horses??? I mean I am all for campaigns against battery chickens, (I've always bought free range eggs but until Jamie, Hugh and Gordon came along with their big campaign I never copped I needed buy free range chicken breasts and the like, I'm such an oblivious dumb posterior sometimes!) but surely a cows life is worth something, the end may not be very nice, but their deaths are quick (most of the time, I know there are horrible exceptions, I am all for campaining against them) and the rest of their lives consists of wandering happily round fields eating grass in the sun and then eating hay or silage in a barn during winter.

As for the enviroment, if people put half as much time into being creative and coming up with solutions like alternative energy or massive chemical scrubs as they put into whining then the world would be in far less of a mess than it is now!!!

It's sad that Joan Jett wanted to do ad for them. I still love her though. Opps I mean her music. LOL.  I personally don't like PETA. Some things in life you can get a message across and not be so freakin loud, boisterous and nutty about it.

I'm a vegetarian but will never be a vegan. I like seafood.  I eat chicken and turkey. Plus cutting all meats out of diet and not sub tofu, soy, lentils or other b-vitamins isn't good for your health. I have to eat soy and tofu if done right is ok. I try to get all b-vitamins in though.  Please do your research before going veggie or vegan. Please.

Pheme's picture

You are not a vegetarian if

You are not a vegetarian if you eat fish, chicken or turkey.  To be a vegetarian you have to eat no animal flesh at all.  A vegan eats no animal products at all (like eggs or dairy).

...

Once "they" invent the steak flavored carrot, I'll convert!

In the meantime, it's good to remember that there are a bunch of us who do not live anywhere near a supermarket, or near agricultural regions, or live in places with very short growing seasons. For us, meat protein is the most available and cheapest. I can afford to eat lots veggies primarily because I worked my ass off all summer growing a garden and spent hours in the fall preserving my produce.

One thing we omnivores can do is check the source of our meat, fish, eggs, etc. Eating as locally as you can and as organic as you can is a start. The more of us "omnis" eat that way, the bigger the market for meat protein that is not laden with stuff that will make you glow in the dark will be.

And for some reason, I now have a craving for a veggie burger!

Provide your resources of what a vegetarian  and I'll recant my statement of labeling myself a vegetarian. I'll just say I don't eat red meat. I don't. I haven't in years.  Oh another thng that ad is total misleading.

Trix's picture

It means not eating meat

Actually, to be more precise, here is the Merriam Webster definition:

Main Entry:
2vegetarian
Function:
adjective
Date:
1849
1 : of or relating to vegetarians
2 : consisting wholly of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products <a vegetarian diet>
Then there's Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarian. Eating flesh from fish or chickens means you're not a vegetarian. The word comes from "vegetation" after all.
I don't eat red meat, and that's what I say I do: I don't eat red meat (or I say I don't eat lamb, beef, venison, etc, if there is any confusion). I've never called myself a vegetarian, even when I was only having something like fish once a month.

Are you serious?  Or are you joking?  It's hard to tell with text.  I can only assume you're serious...so here goes:

Before I became a vegetarian non red meat eater. I did my research. Thanks for the link. I'll look it up. I guess I'll take my non red meat eater self and do some further research. So much confusion on vegetarianism and veganism.

Vegetarianism. To aswer question probably false perceptions or myths from others.  No wonder why when I said it people looked at me weird.

You won this round. You're right,Pheme. Still there is a lot of misconceptions about the Big V.

Geez.

Thanks!

Joan Jett wants to convert you

and I want to convert Joan Jett.

Were at a crossroads with each other I feel **sighs**

C'mon Joan. C'mon.

Kiseki's picture

to miss ketina...

Thanks for recanting. Please don't go around telling people you are vegetarian when you eat everything but red meat! Saying stuff like that is why no one understands what vegetarianism is. Also, it is totally healthy to subsist without any meat or fish in your diet.

Respect

and Love for Joan Jett, if thats her secret to lookin like that at her age, much respect. But once I read P.E.T.A it was like god damn she then sold her soul to the devil. Okay, not really, but the only thing that comes to mind everytime I see those four letters is terrorist. I have a lot of respect for Vegetarians and more power to them for getting on such a diet, but I can't say the same for tis organization.

Going vegetarian was the

Going vegetarian was the best thing for me. I feel so much healthier than before when I was eating tons of meat and fast food. I tried going vegan but that only lasted for a few weeks. Maybe I'll try it again someday when I'm ready to give up cheese. Veggie cheese just doesn't compare sometimes.

I do not support PETA

I support everyones choice to eat/not eat what they want but i will NEVER support PETA.

Many people think that PETA is a great organization that is all for the welfare of animals.  Last year the shelter they run euthanized 90 percent of the animals that came into their care.  Most of these animals were adoptable.  Peta does not believe in having companion animals of any kind.  They also support BSL (breed specific legislation).  Peta is no friend to anyone who has pets or believes that people should be able to have pets as long as they provide complete care for that animal.

Here are 3 links to more information about what PETA really is.

Guh...

I'm not Peta's biggest fan, either, but it bugs me when (not all here, but still-) people can't see the message because they're too busy shooting the messenger.

And yes, I'm vegan.  The real kind- no meat, dairy, leather, wool, honey (thanks to those of you who set the lovely lass above straight on the eating of birds & fishies).  Not vegan because of Peta, rather because of my love and respect for animals, my body, and our planet.   It's easy if you care enough.  Sure it's different at first, but... then it's nothing.  It simply becomes second nature.

Note to the poster above.  Research who's behind those web sites you just posted.  They're the same men who'd beat the crap out of someone for being on a gay web site.  Don't support organizations you don't fully research first.

And since we're all link=posting, check out http://www.VeganOutreach.org if you're interested.  They're good folks.
