Indigo Girls and Jill Sobule go it alone

Jill Sobule has some generous fans, because her new album is all thanks to their support. This year, Sobule put a call out for fans to donate money so she could afford to make another record, and the total collected was $85,000.

Wow, they love her; they really love her!

Sobule has just announced the fruits of her fans' labor, California Years, will be released on her own label, Pinko Records, on April 14. Why did it cost so much? Well, for one thing, it was recorded at Henson Recording Studios, the same place Joni Mitchell recorded Blue and Carole King made Tapestry. Talk about some great history!

Also releasing their own album independently in the next year are The Indigo Girls, who were up front about being dropped from Hollywood Records after 2006's Despite Our Differences. Poseidon And The Bitter Bug will come out March 24 on IG Recordings, an imprint of Vanguard Records.

Poseidon is said to be a two-disc album: one with the new tracks in full-form, the other featuring the same tracks played acoustic. Fans, take note. The only donations the Indigo Girls will accept, however, is in form of buying their album when its available for purchase, though Jill Sobule might inspire some other artists to follow her money-making route in the future.

Self produced

I hope IG is producing it themselves. I like their sound best when they self produce.

I absolutely adore Jill

I absolutely adore Jill Sobule and gave money to the new record twice. Of course, I'll be doing it a third time to finally get to listen to her beautiful music.

I've been pushing Sobule's music on my family for so long, it's one of the few artists my Dad recognizes when it comes up on my Zune.

IG Rox

I think both of these stories are awesome.  Obviously, IG can afford to go it alone....they are legends!!!  I'm so excited about their new album, it is amazing that after 20 years they still have something new to say.

And go Jill Sobule, that's a great way to get your name out there.

Thank god for Indie radio stations

Or I would never have heard either Jill Sobule or the Indigo Girls.  And at that, I still hear tons more of IG than Jill.  Shame all the mainstream stations only play the same old 12 rap songs a day.

Hi,

Just so you know, the photo that you used is creative commons. Therefore, you should probably give credit to the photographer or at least link back to her site.  People who take concert photographs and put them up on a Flickr/etc site put a lot of effort into their work.  A bit of credit would be nice.
