Iman wants black models to be taken seriously

On this last cycle of America's Next Top Model, second runner up Fatima was constantly being compared to Iman. That's certainly nothing to complain about – Iman's beautiful bone structure and glowing skin are only some of her greatest assets. She's currently the host of Project Runway Canada but hasn't stopped modeling – in fact, she is said to be on the cover of an upcoming issue of Italian Vogue, which is being dubbed "the all black issue."

Iman told New York Magazine that she's not necessarily in support of "all black" issues of magazines, however. "They'll think, 'Okay, we did it.' And then they're done with it, and we'll have to wait till next year," she said. She also remarked that she doesn't want black models to be seen as "caricatures."

If anyone would know about how black models are treated in the industry, it is Iman. She is one of a handful that have often been the lonely only black model amongst several white models in shows and shoots throughout her career.

However, in the changing times, more models of color are being recognized for their strengths as models, not as "black models," which has also helped to give them careers in other sectors of the entertainment business.

Besides Tyra, Naomi Campbell and Iman, there are talented and beautiful women like:

Selita Ebanks

Jessica White

Honorine Uwera

Those are just a select few who I could stand to see on some billboards and magazine ads and not in one issue of Italian Vogue. Do you have any favorites you'd like to see used more often?

These Womyn Are So Beautiful In Their Own Ways

Thanks mentioning this. It just made my day. These womyn are just so beautiful. Selita is so hot!  I'm completely offended by that remark, Fleur-de-lys. I'm sick lesbian womyn on here picking on womyn who were born a size 0-2. I'm one of those who fits in that size. I get hated on all the time. I swear. It's like you either too skinny or too fat in this country and still to be seen as unsexy. Maybe I should start a Haterade Anonymous Support Group.  Womyn come in all shapes and sizes baby. Stop the bashing. Even I laid off  bashing womyn's sizes.

I agree...

It's soo overdone with the bashing of the women who fit the "beauty" standard. If you are a size 2, 4, 16 born that way or whatever it does not matter as long as you love yourself. If you have blonde hair and blue eyes good for you, the point is that I don't look that way...and don't care. Who says that we have to agree? We tend to "agree" buy buying into it, the majority vote by sales(capitalism). Even if you happen to look that way, well you're not any more beautiful...to me atleast. A healthy spirit is more beautiful.

Beauty is in diversity look at nature there are many things that make up a whole. As women we look different and that what makes us beautiful. So don't believe the hype!

 Snowflakes!!!!!!!

Oh no!

People are taking offense at completely innocuous questions that were in no way intended to be taken as 'bashing'!  What to do?!

I'm not rascist, but I don't

I'm not rascist, but I don't understand why people of a certain color or race have to have a magazine which features only people of that race or color. I mean we are all trying to erase rascism and segregation, but then people go and have magazines which feature only certain people. I know Iman isn't rascist because she is married to David Bowie, but seriosly - come on.

To Mary...

The reason there are magazines geared toward a specific nationality or race is people of color aren't really shown in the popular magazines unless the person of color is very well known. Or a specific issue is very well known at the time. From famous to the average persons and their stories can be explained in a specific people of color magazine compared others. Also important to moderate issues are explained. An example is JET magazine.

Would I be able to read about the education of people of color such as a paragraph on a great teacher or every week new Black History facts, could I look in People or Cosmopolitan magazines for this?

Thank you Trish Bendix for writing this article.

Oh the irony!

Do you realize the irony of your comment?  Here you are on a lesbian website that features gay-interest articles, written by lesbians for lesbians and about lesbians.  Now, if we are all trying to erase homophobia, why do we have to have a website which feaure only gays and gay-friendly people?  Why are you here when you should be on some gender/sexual-orientation-neutral website?  Are you trying to segregate yourself from the straight world?  Are you hetero-phobic?  So why are you here and why would African-American women read Ebony?

The answer is common-interest.  Sometimes people of the same culture, race, nationality, sexual orientation, etc., need to come together to talk about things that might be of interest to that particular group.  It's building a community.

There are things you can talk about here with other lesbians that a straight person may not understand or care about.

Same with certain magazines with targeted audiences.  Ebony publishes human-interest stories and life-tips that are tailored to the needs and interests of the black comunity, specifically black women.  It's not racism or segregation.  It's a recognition that we all have different interests and needs.

Ahh you beat me to it legallybrunette!!!

I usually roll my eyes at the phrase "I'm not rascit, but....". Yea it's not about segragation, it's like any common interest magazine or website. Websites devouted to golfers, does this disriminate against non golfers? No. Can non-golfers find some unique insight to ransom issue such as lawn care? Yes. This goes for mags like Ebony, if you're white you can still find some leveling ground in their articles that might tickle your fancy. I read all kinds of culture mags (ebony, lantio, brides, men's health, etc.) mags and the perspectives I get are quite enlightening.

If anything I think more people should read these mags that might not "fit" their interest or know you are not the target audience, you'll be surprised on what you find.
