In this episode of Gay Girls Who Game, Tracy gets her Beatles mania on in "The Beatles: Rock Band," while Angela remains dubious about the Fab Four and their hippy trippy magical mystery tour.
They also look at two bits of plastic, and outline why some gaming gear is so much better than others, as well as a segment on gaming vs. real life. Gay Girls Who Game: Episode 2.35

Rock Band Beatles = Love
And as Lennon said, all you need is love! I am pretty smiley, especially after playing the game. You seem to smile lots as well. ^_^
Great review! I think I played it too much too; my girlfriend said she was becoming a bit tired of Beatles songs. How could anyone get tired of them?! Hee hee.
A Mulder and Scully painting?! I am so jealous! That's worth a zillion points. I might have also action figures though. >.>
Personally, I am not buying any batarang that was not developed by Batman himself in the Bat Cave. The lancer looks cool, but it would frighten my puppy dog, I think.
I am a pretty big Beatles fan (speaking of action figures, I might also have Beatles action figures), having paid $85 a ticket to see Paul McCartney in concert on his US tour. And I had heard every single song. They mixed "Tomorrow Never Knows" (from Revolver) a bit with "Within you without you" (from Sgt. Pepper). That is from a 2006 remix album called "Love." Originally, they are different songs.
I do agree on the difficulty. If you want something as challanging as some of the hard Rock Band and Guitar Hero songs (Thrasher, Through the Fire and Flames, and so on), well, this is not quite the game, but that is not the point, the point is the fun. I was able to go through it on guitar quickly too, and then I went through it on bass quickly. I am trying to take my time on drums.
Have you gotten the Helter Skelter achievement on drums? "I got blisters on my fingers!" On a random note, did you know that Ringo Starr is left-handed, but played drums right-handed? I remember reading that somewhere once. I cannot remember what song it is, but there is one Beatles song where Paul McCartney played drums and John Lennon played guitar (Harrison and Starr had walked out). While recording, Lennon said "Pick it up a bit, Ringo!" and Paul responded "Okay, George!" Yeah, I am full of Beatles trivia.
George Harrison's songs are not popular?! "Something" is one of the most beautiful songs ever, in my opinion! <3
The videos, both between the stories and during the songs are beautiful. Beatles fans will probably adore the little bonus footage and trivia too. I loved their little bit from the Christmas album. Well, hello-good-bye! ^_^
This is the best burrito I've ever eaten
First - I wanted to apologize for kind of taking over the comments, I was just so excited to see someone from my hometown was posting here and I just kind of had to rub it in their face.
Secondly - I guess if you were planning on being in Toronto, but aren't, I shouldn't gloat over the Midnight Madness program at TIFF (Toronto Inter'l Film Festival). Except maybe I can over the Aussie films, since the one that's been my fav of the program so far, premiered at the Melbourne festival. The Loved Ones has some truly distrubing scenes, so torture porny extreme I had to look away. But omg, the movie is awesome.
Third - Re: WOW - I was ok the first year I played, but then I got into raiding in Burning Crusade...and yah, I lost my life, and then my friends started playing and they still play, and talk to me about it.
Fourth - Have you seen The Dark Spire? It's an old school dungeon crawler on the DS (it's difficulty is also old school). It's been waiting in lines much easier, but it's so frustrating (the game) at times. I'm not used to games being hard anymore.
I liked the game too. I was
I liked the game too. I was sort of disappointed about the length. I'm not really that much of a gamer, my brother is and so it was nice that we could play together and want to play together for the full day. There was also a sense of accomplishment of finishing it. I don't finish that many games. I was sort of excited that the difficulty level was down because I'm not very good and to be able to play a song on the drums on medium was super cool. I hadn't played rock band 2 online because I haven't finished it, so since I'd already finished this game, I played online a bit. That was fun, not playing alone even though you're actually alone. I was expecting a few songs that weren't there and that was what I disliked more than the length. I know they're coming out for download and thats nice, but I'm not looking forward to paying for downloadable content, especially since this game was more expensive than the regular game. I totally agree with you on the graphics. Its hard not to look at the background when playing. My brother screwed up a couple times because of it.
I am green with envy!
You got to drive a Subi WRX rally car! Dangman, I can totally believe that it is better than the game version. I. Am. So. Jealous.
That said, I just got scribblenauts today (and the official maxwell's rooster hat) and so far the game looks like it will be wicked awesome. I can't wait to see how many problems can be solved by a tyranosaurus rex armed with a flamethrower. ; )
Great review of "The Beatles: Rock Band". The clips look amazing, especially the LSD trippin' retro graphics.
Hope you guys do a new "cribs" edition, and best of luck in the job hunt.
edited to add thatafter some serious gameplay scribblenauts has sucked me in to the totally awesome world of "make your own game fun". Very creative and totally engrossing. Even though it is a DS game, with minimal graphics, the gameplay is wicked awesome. I can see why it got such accolades at E3.
"Dig a Pony" is from the
"Dig a Pony" is from the album "Let It Be" and "Whitin You Without You" is from "Sgt Pepper." So it's not after John Lennon's death. The album "Love" is a remixed album, so it's just regular Beatles-songs which been remixed. So non of the songs from "Love" is after John Lennon's death.
Hey girls!
Great vlog, as always. I haven't been gaming much recently but I've been keeping up with you guys and I've enjoyed the last few vlogs as well.
I don't really know any beatles songs very well so I'm not sure I'd want to play a game with ONLY beatles stuff. Plus, I don't think my girl will be very happy if I played the game, she can't stand them. Don't ask me, it could be that her ex-hubby loved them. She's more of an Elvis, Billy Joel fan.
I will totally have to set aside some time to play Batman. Looks like a great game.
Have a great week everyone!
Lucky You!!
So lucky you got to drive a Subaru Impreza WRX STI! I'm jealous lol. The Beatles Rockband looks like so much fun, I can't wait to try it out. =]

Despicable!
Yeah.... I like playing evil. Nowadays i dont even play the good storyline. Usually i make a devilish lady dressed in all black, and I will ignore the plight and pleas of helpless townfolk as a I selfishly pursue my own goals. When i see someone i like, I might act nice and help em out, but then back to my dastardly deeds! Unfortunetly sometimes the story pushes you in one direction, but I am nobody's tool... or attack dog, I choose my own quests even if it means being a goody two shoes once in a while. In Fallout 3 my character is neutral, avoiding most direct conflicts, doing alot of stealing, and killing only the mindless wasteland creatures. The problem is that some quests force you to take sides, so I usually leave those unresolved. Ideally most games would let you play neutral, but since thats usually just being bi-polar I prefer to play super evil especially when you get bonuses like dark-side points and stronger powers. I really enjoy being a character who is bad-ass... and usually the good storyline makes you an ass-kisser. Mass Effect changes this but in general you get a feeling of power from the evil storyline. Thats what i enjoy, since thats closer to my ideal of being a lone-wolf type character who plays around with people along the way.
Anways... pardon the rant. Great show once again.. the racing is spectacular. I'm glad you liked guitar hero... im personally not a fan of rhythm games... though god of war/heavenly sword style rhythm game would be AMAZING. Keep up the good work and oh yeah... public service announcment!
Do you buy used? No? Maybe you should. I used to say.. I would never buy a used game. Nowadays the box/manual are really low quality, and the games may not be worth $30-60. Amazon's secondary retailers sell used games for dirt cheap, and they ship fast and come in good condition. This is a must for console games and old PC games that are out of stock. Just make sure its a highly rated seller.
bataran as piece of crap lol
#1 before i forget. CONGRATULATIONS Tracy!! Hope you love the new job. :)
#2 im actually going to try not to monopolize the message board this week lol
#3 are you kidding? of course you get major points simply for owning a UFO poster and even more points for actually having it haning on the wall! Then the xfiles limited edition painting and action figures .. : O .. soooo friggin cool.. that gets you both brownie points, gold stars and high fives!
#4 an additional *high five* to Angela for not being a beatles fan! thank god there is someone else on the planet that would understand my lack of enthusiasm over the beatles lol
#5 its really no secret that i have an affinity for beautiful cars and fast driving.. so i LOVED the real vs gaming driving. love love loved it to pieces! soooo awesome you got to drive a rally car Tracy! Looks like way too much fun - makes me want to go play need for speed again.
p.s. i think its quite apparent that the Canadians love you guys : ) you should totally come to Toronto!
Hmmm....
What's wrong with monopolizing the message board? lol
And you're right, Canadians do love them both!
just for the record...
I blame you!
you just make it way too easy to do the flirty banter thing im so accustomed to. if you wouldnt indulge me so much then maybe i wouldnt have to write so many responses lol
(p.s. you posted at 1:01am? - you should be sleeping.. mwahahaha) that is all.
Well...
I don't think that it's fair to blame me. It's obviously someone else's fault entirely. I'm not sure who at this point, but I'm fairly certain that it isn't me lol.
Yes yes. I was up late. It made for a very early and grumpy morning for me. Stupid job.
Well firstly...
Firstly Angela, so glad I stopped my order for the special edition of Batman, I stumped for the game only as I'm stoney broke right now and I'd been kicking myself ever since, but after your views on the cheap and nasty batarang they included I'm feeling like I did the right thing! I did check out the lancers a while ago on ebay and they looked pretty nifty but I'm too tight to part with that much hard cash.
That said I love the game and am looking forward to your view on it, dealing with the foes is a bit 'samey' for me but the riddles etc it fun, the jokers teeth just get annoying after a while, they aren't really a challenge.
OK so The Beatles, My pop's brought me up on them so this game is a dream come true. I've never really played any rockband games so this is the one that'll get me to dig in and give it a go. I love the screen shots and trailers I've seen so far I just think the whole kit is costly but its not enough to stop me.
I'm going on my first holiday in 3 weeks so all my funds are tied up, but the second I'm back on British soil I'll be picking it up. I'm guessing that you all have to be in the same location to play, as in my mate in Wales can't play as Paul while I play as George in England?? I think they should look into that if its not the case, but I digress.
Tracey you should give George a chance - All things must pass is a great double album, and no matter how much I love paul and John (Ringo is somewhat over rated IMHO) George had bags of talent musically and I think matured quicker than the others.
Looking forward to your next review, btw a new cribs edition would go down well....;)
So...
I just had to pay an electrician an obscene amount of money to come to my house, but I will somehow come up with the money to buy The Beatles: Rock Band. My drum kit has been hidden away in my bedroom closet, doing nothing but collect dust, for far too long. I think it's time that I pull it out and see just how much I can annoy my new neighbours with my late night Rock Band playing.
I'm not a huge Beatles fan, but I like enough of their material that the game should be fun. And I usually play with a group of people, and that's always fun regardless of what you're playing. Is the drumming really that easy? Am I going to now have to make the leap to expert???
dammit... i lied.
Okay it seems I've failed miserably with trying to cut down on my posting. BUT I must say that I am not a beatles fan but I did see this game last night and even I found it very impressive. My friends who were playing it LOVED it and raved about it. I don't doubt you would have uber amounts of fun with it Jenn.
Also got to see NHL10 which is pretty neat and worth a look for any hockey fan. Very typical of a hockey game which bores me a bit but the career mode/drafting/trading setup is actually quite intriguing. Fighting seemed to lack a little bit of excitement though, it doesn't appear that you can draw blood or knock your opponents teeth out which is a tiny bit disappointing to any true hockey fan but I guess that's what an E rating gets you. Face washing your opponent is always fun though lol
Yeah.....
I somehow wound up at Futureshop today... I swear I was only helping my brother to install a new stereo in his car. I promise I was only there looking for a re-location harnass.
Sigh... I now own The Beatles: Rock Band.
DAMMIT!
I have to say I always play
I have to say I always play through as 'good' on games with some sort of alignment choice like on infamous and (back in the day) true crime. I think maybe there is some sort of paradoxical thrill in taking the moral high-ground and resisting being bad.
I know, downgrading sucks :( but speaking of moral choice games (sort of) I might dig out san andreas again. Speaking of playing good - I once tried to play through that without killing anyone I didn't have to which is much harder than it sounds. I guess it's back to some of my old 'classics' (not sure I can call all of them that!)
I must say that rock band does look very visually impressive. Me and that game have never particulary got on though (my friend just used to automatically put on 'disable failure' when i was round). But it still looks good.
Grat vlog as usual anyway - I'm glad I saved watching it till now because I was just about to go mad after being at work all day.
Oh and I saw this comic and it made me think of this vlog :P
The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes, but don't be afraid...
Oooh i was freaking out when
Oooh i was freaking out when you were rally driving, i held my breath for a while until it finished, looked so much fun.
Right 'Wet' well i was very excited about it as you would be due to the hotness of Rubi and the fact its a woman as the main character but i was disappointed i must say, it was fun but they soon became repeatative and then oh its finished lol very very short, loved loved loved the grindhouse feeling of though.
Im never evil in games i just cannot bring myself to do.
Been playing Batman Arkham Asylum wow it was amazing i must admit when it finished i was sad coz i didnt want it do end, thought the game play was wicked and it looked amazing.
Hopefully youll do another vlog before Oct as im off to Vegas on 5th Oct for 2 weeks so wont be able to watch you, Oooooh im so excited im seeing The Veronicas on thursday woohoo i love them.
I'm glad y'all like my
I'm glad y'all like my screen name. Last yr my housemate Jack saw it and did not appreciate the play on words.
I was gonna reply to this vlog yesterday but got distracted by the arrival of WET in the post. I've decided to play it on hard since I usually play on normal and finish games too quickly, it certainly seems more challenging so far. I'm enjoying the game so far and what a bonus that Ms Dushku has lent her voice to the main character.
I was super impressed by the rally driving, I'd be too much of a wuss to try that for real (especially since I can't drive) not that I'm a fan of driving games other than Burnout.
Am the only person in the world who doesnt get the whole rock band thing? My cousins love it, they play it a lot and are pretty good. But they own a real gaytar and drums that they cant be arsed to learn. Being really good at pretend gaytar aint ever gonna impress a chick. I also don't get how ppl can fit all that rock band stuff in their house.
As for the Beatles I'm not really a fan but I can appreciate they were good. I saw one of their films though and thought it was awful, perhaps it needed more drugs to be good.
I like the idea of an episode about up coming releases. Also I like the idea of a retro game episode, I've been playin old school pokemon red lately and to be honest its every bit as fun and addictive as any ps3 game. Its strange how old games like sonic were so difficult even though they were in 2D and it only was directional buttons and jump. I didn't complete any of the sonic games till I got it on ps2 and could save.
"My life's like a romantic comedy that's never romantic! Or comedic! My life is nothing like a romantic comedy!" - Caitlin (Cashmere Mafia)
My thesis is finished!
My thesis is finished! Hurrah! I was within the word count and actually handed it in two days early which is a record for me. I have a week off and then I start my PhD at Birmingham which is... scary, lol.
I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum this week and I loved it. I'm not much for third person button mashing fighting styles, but it seems to work pretty well in Batman. I spent far too much time getting all the Riddler challenges, and I loved all the stuff like Twoface's cell having Harvey Dent posters up, and Catwoman's mask being in a display case in the mansion. Very cool. The interview/interrogation tapes kind of reminded me of Bioshock but in a good way - I think I loved Harley's the most. (I have a soft spot for Harley Quinn!) Just need to work on getting all the challenge medals now :D It sucks that the special edition had that plastic batarang with it :( For how much the special editions cost, you'd think they'd put a bit more effort in!
I kind of want to get Beatles: Rock Band but I don't think I like the Beatles enough to justify it. There's maybe five Beatles songs that I LOVE and I bet half of them aren't in the game, lol. I like the idea of the harmonies and complicated ambidextrous drum parts but I think I'd get fed up of the song choice. Think I'll just keep spending millions of MS points (magic points! it's not like spending real money!) on Rockband DLC instead, heh.
Speaking of, isn't the L4D DLC out soon? We need to have another epic ten hour gaming session :D
www.myspace.com/stopstartstall - acousticy music type stuff.
awesome!
Excellent Vlog again ladies- thank you for the birthday song- that was awesome! I thought it totally rocked.
I got Beatles Rock Band for my birthday (thanks to taintedidealist!) and we played it ALL WEEKEND. I know most of the songs that were on there, and although I am more of a fan of the early stuff, I liked the game. Although everytime I play "Yellow Submarine" I then have it in my head for DAYS.
Tracy- Congrats on the new job- i hope you are enjoying it! and I also played the solo setting in one sit down (singing).. and it was fantastic.
Angela- I have trouble playing evil- even after I play good the first time around. I tried to play evil for Mass Effect and I just couldn't do it. Damn those morals of mine! And Lesbians with Lancers? I like it!
Oh, and I agree with HanM- another L4D 10 hour marathon should happen!
Alas i'm not a Beatles fan
Alas i'm not a Beatles fan either. I just never listened to them as i was growing up and never got into them now. But then I actually dont own any Rockband or Guitar Hero stuff. I have to rely on inviting myself over to a friend's house to try stuff out. Same goes for other games, this student life of being broke sucks!
I have to say, i'm a sucker for bonus toys or special edition releases of game, or dvds. Hell i went out and bought an Xbox 360 just because it was red. But i'm glad i didnt end up getting the Batarang through the special edition, i might just hunt it down from a replica store like I had to do for my Buffy Scythe.
Queer camp was EXCELLENT! Its an annual camp organised by the West Aussie contingent of Cross Campus Queer Network, which is basically an unfunded sudent run group linking all the queer departments from the different universities in WA and represents us at state and national student union meetings. They also organise events throughout the year, our next big event will be organising a float for the Perth Pride Parade! Our theme is Prom Zombies! Mmmm...Brains!
Sadly (or more like thankfully) I didnt get caught in too many photos from camp! The only one I was snapped in looked like I was getting busted for staring at half naked girls lol. But my costume didnt quite turn out as I had hoped, my paper-mache ninja turtle shell got stuck on the basket i was using as a model so i couldnt bring it :( But had no excuse to be sad, It was lots of fun, throw a bunch of queers into 4 cottages seprated by mud, add alcohol, a ninja vs pirate party, a student drag king troupe performance by A-Attack and lots of ppl stripping down and doing laps around the cotage containing the vegetarian lesbians and you pretty much have Queer Camp. There were also some serious workshops regarding coming out, dealing with family, a make-up course and muddy soccer, so it wasn't all just fun and drinks.
However for evidence of me learing at half naked girls whilst in my Donatello costume, just add me on facebook :D
