Mac love and Spore apprehension

I LOVE MY NEW MAC!  It is so bad ass and powerful.

I do want to play Spore but I'm not too happy about EA's DRM on it.  I don't like only having three installs.  Plus what does it mean to the resale market?  How can you sell the game if it's already been instaalled?   If I do get it, though, it'll definitely be the mac version.

Oh and I have a facebook account.  Give out some facebook info love.

P.S.  Angela, I love how you say "Cannon Fodder."  Can you say it again, please?

It says I've got to write something here

I don't think anything could beat the Sims in terms of gaming...but then I am a bit obsessed biased.

My brother has been talking about Spore for a while so I bought it for him as a birthday present (his birthday is on Saturday) and tried to keep it a surprise. He bought the game on Monday and has been playing it ever since. So now not only do I have to take the game back I have to think of something to buy him for his birthday and I have no idea!

Is there any chance of a review of the new Mercenaries 2 game please? Everybody seems to be going mad about it (it's sold out in most shops here) but I can't see it being much different to a lot of games already available.

Spore

I was able to play the game prior to release (friends in low places always come in handy.) As we all know not all gamers are created equal, and PC games are not my gig. However, Spore was an instant hook for me. The multitude of character options was the biggest plus for me. The more autonomous a game allows us to be, the more viable in the market it becomes because we all have a little 'Goddess' in us yearning to create and control the environment.

And...just this past weekend I saw a special on Animal Planet that used the animation and evolutional aspect of Spore to create an entire show on how the world's animals will evolve in the year 2200 (or some crazy number.)

Fun Vlog- again!

Love the vlog once again ladies. You two always do such a nice job.

I made it halfway through my BSG marathon this weekend, and had to stop due to work. I'll finish it up after this weekend (my birthday is Saturday so I will be up partying..um, I mean, "celebrating in an adult-like manner", and won't be able to watch.  But never fear, I will finish all four seasons! And most of my residents probably think I am insane- although they really enjoyed the video I posted on facebook of myself and my staff playing RockBand. It has upped my geekiness factor. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJFzfRwa7pU sorry the sound quality is terrible)

I enjoy the newbie dance, and the fact that the two of you are in sync... very nice!

Just a tidbit, some of the more uber conservative Christian groups around here HATE Spore because it "promotes the fallacy of evolution." I will try and find some of the editorials they have written... personally, I find them H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S.

Angela- I want that wallet!!!!

Tracy- It cracks me up that you didn't like civilazation because you can't take over the world by being "nice."

The t-shirts are on their way (at least according to UPS)... so look for pictures next week!

Gaming groups

Great Vlog

And thanks for doing a non consule review. Seen anything about Ego Draconis? I'm really looking forward to that RPG but I'm not sure about female content. All the preview game play video's are a male charector, hopefully one will be able to play a female charector who turns into a female Dragon.

Because you brought up that Alexa Archer is from the S.F. Bay Area I wanted to ask if she or others know if there is some sort of gaming club/s in the area. I realize most gamers communicate virtually and play in groups through the Xbox (I don't have one)but I've been having the urge to talk to some other gamers in person. I am at a place where I want to learn more about setting my computer up as a gaming rig and I'm having trouble doing it with internet info. Maybe clubs/groups don't exist anymore. Its hard for me because no one (and I mean no one!) I know plays computer games. Best of course would be a group of women who game but that is probably asking for the moon. Couldn't there be game clubs like book clubs??

Is there some sort of lesbian gaming community on Xbox, maybe I'll have to get one if there is. The thing is I don't have access to the TV on a regular basis just odd hours when its not being watched. Two TV's won't cut it as we live in a one (big but not two TV's big) room live/work type apartment.

Are there community college classes for building gameing PC's ?

yay!

A whole episode spore review! My cup runneth over! Not entirely sure whether I should buy it in case it will interfere with my studies... I tend to have pretty good self control, but if it's as good as you guys say it is, my social life/ hope of a good degree may vanish. May wait a few weeks and see if I have enough free time, if not i'll buy it for the holidays :) Angela, your "Spore christmas?" comment made me laugh out loud. One question: I know they have/ had a seperate 'creature creator' for sale on the website, does that mean the one that comes with the game is in any way limited?

Oh and with regards to the helicopter, I tend to fly it in my room where there's not many breakable objects, but I have taken out the lamp a few times...

 Looking forward to next week!

Waaargh

Hi ladies - I haven't had a chance to post in awhile so I'd better do it now while I'm thinking about it.

I should have Spore on Thursday to check out.  The DRM thing doesn't bother me and I think the ratings on Amazon for Spore (1 star) is pretty shitty.  I bet more than half of those who gave the poor rating have pirated a number of games in their time.  Regardless, it's always the jerks like that who ruin it for others; hence the DRM.  For those that do not know what I am talking about, the Spore box limits installation to 3 PCs.  You'll have to contact EA to get additional unlocks if you install on more than 3 computers.

So, I have spent much of the free time I've had playing Lost Odyssey.  I'm going to say now that this game is not for everyone, but I absolutely love it and am hooked.  It's a turn-based Japanese RPG so you're not going to be clicking buttons to swing your sword or block; rather you're going to designate your characters to perform a certain type of attack or defense.  Think original Final Fantasy or Ultima.  Let me say that the graphics, animations, sounds and story are amazing.  Mistwalker Studios did an amazing job with the creation of the game as well as all of the localization translations and voice overs.  They I think Tracy and Angela would like it and I sure would love to see it reviewed here.  Here's a trailer for it.  Awesome graphics.

I've got some pre-orders coming my way as well for the Xbox 360.  Fable 2.  Played the Pub Games some and they're pretty fun.  This is a collector's edition that's definitely worth it.  Fallout 3.  Well, of course this collector's edition will be worth it because it comes with a bobblehead and a lunchbox!  Lastly, there's Rise of the Argonauts.  October is going to be a busy gaming month.  I'll have to prioritize.

And yay for reviewing a PC game!

You might not see much of me here in the next few months with all these games and Warhammer Online releasing.  :D

Can I get a Harpy dance?  Sort of like the Safety dance -- But not really.

not 3 computers

it's not 3 computers, the problem is it's 3 installs without uninstalls, and I think most pc users here have experienced problems that required a wipe and re-install. Which means you'll risk using them all up on the same computer if you have a spot of trouble. Demanding internet use for a single player game with optional shared content is shitty. And sooner or later, EA will discontinue the DRM server for spore (years and years from now, but it'll happen) at which point your bought game becomes worthless. Several music DRM systems that have gone out of favour left the people who did pay for their music unable to play it since the DRM server vanished, while those who pirated it kept on without any bother. That being said, I love spore, and I bought it DRM and all, I just dont like it (the DRM)
milena87's picture

Uhm...

Not exactly like that... You have 3 authentications, not 3 installation. Basically, on the same pc you can install the game how many times you want, but if you change some components (like motherboard, graphic card, ecc...) it will require a new authentication.

The same thing goes for Mass Effect. However, it's enough to backup all the game datas to be sure :P

Bioshock had SecurRom too, but they released a patch a while ago so that authentication won't be required any more.

Basically I hope that what happened to Bioshock will happen to Mass Effect and Spore too, my 5 PCs demands it (yeah, I have a large family lol)

OH MY GODS!

Okay, I got Spore the day it was released and have been completely obsessed ever since. The greatest game i've ever played? hmmm let me thi...OF COURSE IT IS! I too have been waiting for years and I could not be more satisfied. Also, this vlog has given it even more bonus points by encouraging Tracy's cuteness factor to be at an all time high :) And I'm totally with you Tracy about that whole manual reading rubbish, gaming is what I do when I get bored of reading so there's no way I'm gonna read when I could just do.

And oh gods do I ever love the customization. You made the BSG ships, well I of course was nice up until the civilization point as well, so I had religious ships as well, and the second I saw all the parts I knew exactly what I had to do. I made Moya!! AS in the beautiful fantastic living ship from Farscape(as if you didn't know) If there was any ship that could convert me, it would be that one, especially if it had Claudia Black aboard........................... sorry spaced out there for a second(get it, spaced, heehee I crack myself up)

Anyways now my enthusiasm is getting the best of me, and I'm off to play again. Whats your name on sporepedia I wanna see your BSG ships :) I'm KateLouise, if you wanna come see my Moya.

Wwooooooo

Even with the DRM issues, I am getting mine tomorrow and I can't wait to play it.

Especially since I have been waiting ages since I first heard about this game.

After this review I am super excited and I plan to play it all weekend too :-p

Ejay clubworld on PC?!?!!!

Thanks so much for the garage band title to search..  I have been trying desperately to find ejay club world for the pc, but have been quite stymied by Amazon and other online retailers here in the states. My big problem with ejay club world on PS2 is that there is no way to translate the game from PS2 files to Mp3. That is a big bummer. But on a happy note, I am thoroughly enjoying  Rayman Raving Rabbids on my PS2. Something light to escape from the political "discourse" we in the states are getting from our "news" media.  And I am definitetely going to check out Spore for the PC. Also, I finally got through the first mission on "Black" for PS2.   That was a great recomendation. Keep up the good work at lesbiangamers.com and lesbiangeek.com, and of course, here at AE.  y'all rock, you'betcha!

I don't think I can wait until Christmas!

I first heard about Spore from one of my geeky guy friends at work. I told him that the extent of my gaming ability was Mario games and the Sims (I only watch your vlog because its A. entertaining and B. A way for me to be able to talk to my little brother) and he told me about Spore and that it sounded right up my alley. It seems from your review, that he was right. When Spore came out last Sunday and Discovery Channel was having a special, I said to myself, oh, a good Christmas present, even though I wanted it now, but with University starting up again in two weeks, I thought it would be smart not to get it. Now, with all your enthusiasm, I think I need it now. At least I'll get some quality time invested before it needs to be hidden so I'll study. What my Mom doesn't know about what I'm doing with my money won't hurt her....

So yeah, I'll probably head out tomorrow and get it after I go to the dentist to get my cavity filled (was that too much information?)

Random List Of Thoughts Again

"When one window closes another mac opens" - So going to be my catch phrase from now on... (It has over taken "Cous Cous so nice they named it twice")

I got loads of money for my birthday and I am one step closer to my Mac Book Pro (YAY!!)...

I saw the 'spore' comerical the other day and wondered if you where going to review it...

I do want to buy Spore but I think I will wait till I get the new Mac...

I finally saw Rock Band on sale for the for the Wii (£130 - Cheap)...

My comment from last week

My comment from last week was mostly about the new-poster-dance. The music and the moves go perfectly together :D

Spore seems really addictive. Did you girls every play Myst back in the day? My brother and girlfriend are planning on having a LAN-party.

your dancing is a little bit of heaven

I LOVE the way you guys say the word "butterworth" - haha it makes me laugh everytime.  I imagine that you say it exactly as the Queen of England would if she were to have some lovely syrup with her pancakes! So proper and fancy!

I wonder if you ladies have any photos of yourselves as young gamers playing any old school games or systems ... those would be spectacular to see and i'm sure would be enjoyed by your myriad of fans!

oh.  and I don't bake - on the weekends or otherwise.  but if I were coming over to visit i'd be glad to go out of my way to stop at a delightful donut shop, buy some pastries and then pass them off as my own so that I don't ruin the magic that is mrs butterworth for you!

Harpy's picture

Sweet

LOL!  I had the same reaction to 'city'.  I agree though, 'Butterworth' is much better said all 'proper and fancy'.

The youth photos idea is also a fabulous idea.  :D

Fun vlog!

Hey Guys,

Another enjoyable vlog.  Now that you've covered Spore and I'm less confused about the whole concept behind the game, perhaps you could enlighten me as to what Little Big Planet is all about?  I know it's not out yet so I don't expect an answer straight away, however there's so much hype about it but little explaining what type of game it is.  Once again, I'm confused.

First PC game...

Well.. thanks to you ladies, and to a few of my friends that lean towards the nerdier side of the spectrums reviews, I went out two days ago and got my self a copy of Spore even though I haven't played a PC game in a long... long time.

I have to say, I'm loving it. I went the predator route and attack everything in sight.. it's much easier than being all nice. Singing and Dancing is harder than biting, and spearing. I really don't know how you had the patience.

Anyways, I'm a rare commenter but thought i'd let you know that Spore has joined my Wii in my collection of guilty nerd pleasures. Though I am pretty sure that my Wii is going to be replaced by a 360 fairly soon... thankfully my girlfriend has a nerdy side too!

Its going up on my deviant site for everyone to see for free... Yes the word free... its relative you know. (still learning the art of coloring stuff)
Im open for commissions by the way <attempt at geting gass money... if you actualy want a bit of artwork done by me you can contact me via the email listed on my deviant site. www.balambao.deviantart.com
