News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Former Gladiator Hellga plays gay in "Madea Goes to Jail"

You might recognize Robin Coleman under a different name: Hellga. On last year's return of American Gladiators, Coleman competed as the blondest of the buff crew, taking on any who dared challenge her in a physical contest.

After a brief stint on Days of Our Lives, Coleman is on the big screen playing a character named Big Sal in Tyler Perry's new film, Madea Goes to Jail. The film reached number one this past weekend in its debut.

Big Sal is a lesbian inmate with whom Madea has several run-ins. One review cites their scenes as mostly of the slapstick violent variety:

A melee with Big Sal involves Madea shoving the woman's head beneath a steam press. [Another character] Candy also gets into the act, half-heartedly elbowing Big Sal after Madea tosses her foe into a laundry bin.

It looks like Coleman wasn't hired just for her acting skills. The woman has some brawn — and that's an understatement. Nonetheless, she seems pretty excited about her part in the film. Watch this interview with her about her character:

She doesn't discuss Big Sal's lesbianism, which, of course, comes off as predatory when she hits on her peers, making them uncomfortable — Madea included.

Perhaps Coleman will be so convincing she will get herself a part in The Farm, although I can't say I see a future for her and Alice Pieszecki. And as with the rest of Perry's Madea films, you have to go into them knowing stereotypes are plentiful. You can either choose to take offense or laugh with them. Take it from me — the latter is much more fun.

i can't wait to go see this

i can't wait to go see this movie.  in the play version, madea has run ins with an inmate named Chico, she's black, and the lesbianism (or rather queerness) is implied.  wonder what's up with all the drastic changes

Oh Tyler Perry. I want to  see this movie badly b/c I enjoy a lot of his movies but seriously why do writers seem to fall prey to their own cliche writiing especially if they're trying to be creative. I think Robin Coleman was a good pick. It sounds like she wanted to audition for the role. Yeah, I wonder why she didn't mention her playing a Lesbian, hmmm. Or maybe it's not a big deal to her, hmmm.

Thanks for picking this  story up.

surprisingly good

My mom, my sister and I went to see this movie because my mom wanted to see it, but about half way through I decided that it was pretty funny and that Vanessa Ferlito's sexiness was definitely worth sitting through the whole thing. The lesbian jokes weren't really bothersome because Madea didn't apprehend Big Sal because of her orientation, just because she was sexually harassing her female friend. And when Madea was calling Big Sal "young man" and other various male pronouns it just seemed appropriate rather than mocking or wrong. They even sorta become friends near the end. So it was a pretty good movie that had a moving plot while still being an enjoyable comedy. I was pleasantly surprised.

Uhm, Hellooooooo

Didn't you guys notice Candace, the carpenter, as the girlfriend? Forget about the gladiator woman, our connection is Ion who played Candace in TLW. She was the fiance. Anyone? Anyone? This movie was hilarious.

I thought i was the only one who noticed that! She looked a lil' off in the movie, though; guess i'm used to seeing her in oversized overalls with her tongue in bette's mouth [*i'm so terrible]

Tyler Perry is a comedic

Tyler Perry is a comedic GENIOUS! Of course his movies are hilarious but his live dinner theater is just as good. The fact that he has combined some of my favorite forms of entertainment (Gladiators and Madea) just makes me want to see it even more. I have a feeling this movie is going to be AMAZING!
