"Fish Out of Water" takes on Fred Phelps and homophobiaIf you're a fan of For the Bible Tells Me So, consider this an updated sequel. Fish Out of Water is a new documentary that will be debuting at Outfest in Los Angeles next month, focusing on the interpretations of homosexuality in the bible. You may remember reading about the film before when Kaki King talked about working to score the film, and why it was so important for her to be involved in the project: It didn't take much convincing. It's a project they've been working on so hard, for so long ... I've had people call me a sinner, and I'm like, 'I'm not a sinner, I'm a great person.' I'm a big fan of Jesus, even though I'm not a Christian, but in his role as a philosopher. His message and the message of Christianity can get so twisted, and for such weird reasons. Fish Out of Water is from lesbian film director Ky Dickens, who felt compelled to put together the documentary after facing homophobia from the sisters in her Vanderbilt sorority.
The film follows Ky's personal journey as she narrates footage from the first legal gay marriage in Boston, shots from Prop. 8 rallies, the Obama election and animated sequences illustrating Bible verses. There's also a lot of actual commentary from the people she's talking about: Gays and lesbians and the ministers, preachers and historians who all want to see the truth about religion and gays reaching the others in the film, who openly discuss their discontent for the LGBT community. And that includes this guy:
That's right: Fred Phelps. And he, of course, always has something to say. Luckily, there are lot of more intelligent, well-spoken people involved with the film. Here's the trailer: Does Fish Out of Water look like something you would be into seeing if it comes to a film fest near you? Submitted by on June 4, 2009 - 10:00am. |

I'll definitely try to watch this...
... though probably in about 10 years time when it finally makes it to a cinema or TV screen near me! :-)
But I find this topic really interesting, particularly with how the bible is interpreted. I work as a translator and I know that by simply putting a comma in the wrong place, you can completely change the meaning behind a sentence. I find it crazy that people can take the bible so literally when it has been translated through so many languages and has even been re-translated in its English form. For all we know, the verse "You shall not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination" could have started its Hebrew life as "You shall lie with a man as with a woman; that is natural". A bit far-fetched, I know, but just trying to illustrate my point. :-)
Anyhoo, to conclude my impromptu essay, yes, i'd really like to see this film. It looks like it'll be very interesting. :-)Well...
Point taken.... lol, it has been more than once that I've used that exact statement to ask people to reconsider their blindness.
I will love to see this film, being the proud habitant of a very religious country and a church drop out too, I've found myself in a few bible against homosexuality discussions (and I am not even out of the closet yet... go figure) and sometimes I'm afraid I might run out of ammo...I am sure that films like this will certainly help me out on this issue. I know, I know it sounds like fall-out-short reason but it goes deeper than that, really... lol
I can't wait to see it.
Meh
Fish Out Of Water
Yes. Having grown up in the church I want to see this. This is creative activism at its best.

Thanks for the heads up!
I'm very much looking
I'm very much looking forward to seeing this. The subject matter I can finally relate to and a great score to boot.
It looks really well done.
It looks really well done. I think that having a young filmmaker put this together is going to make it very different in some ways from past efforts--in good ways.
This is a subject which I personally have faced for years now, and which is one of the main reasons I'm not out to most of my family & childhood friends. Although I know one film won't be able to change the world, I'm hoping it'll give me continued hope for the future, and I'll be able to show some more border-line homophobes a better way for religion, society, and homosexuality to interact...
But, hey, sometimes I'm an optimist. :-)
This looks very
Why do people think they can cherry-pick which rules to follow absolutely and which to ignore?
50 years?
I wish I was born 50 years into the future. I'll be 68 years old when LGBT issues will be a thing of the past--I guess I'll have some stories to tell my grandchildren!

loved it!!
Does anyone know where I can download it? I work at a center for gay human rights and I'd love to show this doc to the people I work with... I've shown them 'for the bible tells me so' (it took me ages to get the subtitles in portuguese) and everybody loved it... I'm sure they would love this one 2 :D
Thanks ;)
@carolsdc
getting in touch with the filmmaker
CaroL, You should check this link:
http://www.outfest.org/fest2009/print-source-guide.html
Since the film is showing at Outfest, go to the source list, and see who the contact person/company for the film is: could be the filmmaker or producer, or a distributor. Contact them, tell them why, and you may be able to convince them to send you a "preview" DVD that you can watch.
The source list isn't up yet, but it will be closer to the festival.
TY
Thank you!! :D
