Feminist fashion: Wear Gloria Steinem on your sleeve

Have you ever thought it would be awesome to wear a bell hooks hoodie? Probably not, but in any case, it's completely possible. KMStitchery is an independent eco-friendly clothing line that uses stencils of famous feminists for their items, which include jackets, T-shirts, skirts, dresses and tank tops.

So far, the collection includes stenciled items of Gloria Steinem, Emma Goldman, Simone De Beauvoir, Victoria Woodhull, Lucy Stone, Angela Davis and Frida Kahlo. (I know — it's amazing!)

And the clothes are cute and modern in flattering fits and bright colors. You can rep feminism while looking totally stylish and being friendly to the environment. Wearing outfits like this for a night out is exactly what Emma Goldman meant when she said, "If I can't dance, I don't want your revolution." At least that's my interpretation.

Would you wear any of the clothes made by KMStitchery? Are they missing your favorite feminist?

bell hooks

For reals: bell hooks used the bathroom at my house once a few years back. (I was her host for a book reading and we hung out for a few days). I would tell all of my hipster feminist friends, "bell hooks used that toilet!" as they walked back there. Most of them were unfazed.

But, I was thrilled about it.

I think these clothes are an awesome idea. And they look cool, too. A friend of mine has an Angela Davis shirt that I covet. Now I can get my own.

ooh my my, bell hooks - amazing...

now THAT is amazing. as if your feminist friends were unfazed! What was it like to hang out with bell hooks? and what book reading was it?

For a feminist activist course I was in few years ago, we had Leslie Feinberg come in to the class to talk about trans issues and it was a six week intensive summer course. The class was a total split between gender studies students and people that just needed an extra credit. So on the day that Leslie Feinberg came in to the class it felt really intense because 5 or 6 of us were ready to faint or cry (basically felt like we were meeting madonna...or jesus) and the rest of the class was just like "who is this person? and why are you all fighting over who sits at the front of the room?"

I love the clothes. Hm ... I'd like a shirt with ... judith butler or judith halberstam ...except...not alot of people would know who they are. or ... minnie bruce pratt or leslie feinberg. or ... audre lorde.

Actually...I'm going to make a shirt that says "talk theory to me, baby" hehe.

Judith Halberstam

I would totally, hugely dig a Judith Halberstam hoodie. or a Leslie Feinberg one. I can't believe you got to see Leslie Feinberg in person! I probably would have hyperventilated at the back of the class, the way straight tween girls would at the Jonas Brothers.

But back to my huge crush on the super intelligent "Jack" Halberstam - come on, girls, she looks like this! Why would you not wear a shirt that has a picture of the author of the seminal Female Masculinity on it?

And I repeat again, she looks like that!

Wow!

I would love to hear Feinberg read or lecture. That must have been great. She is a pioneer in trans lit. Her books have been enormously helpful to people curious about and sensitive to trans issues.

"Talk theory to me" is a GREAT shirt. You need to patent that. (also am chuckling over your sign-on - fishwithoutabike :)

bell hooks was a reader and a guest at a big reading festival held by the daily newspaper I was working for at the time. I was not her chaperone but she took a liking to me and I ended up spending most of the next few days with her. I would be driving her around in my car and eating breakfast with her and thinking, "This is unbelievable."

She was hilariously funny, sharp, and totally great company. She was advising me on my love life and she was very candid. That woman is wise.

Hell, yes! But wait...there's more.

I think, that is great. I would totally wear shirts and hoodies. Another thought on that crossed my mind though: This fashion line can make feminism more popular. It leaves space for many interpretations to the ones, who see someone wearing a shirt e.g. Or worse, the interpretation is lost and it is bought just "for fun". To be hip and new. To be on top. Like it happened to the whole Che Guevara shirts. I guess, that is the same. I see so many people waering these red shirts without knowing anything about his life. They assume, he might be a hero, but in fact, they have no clue.

I'm not sure, if I want this to happen with feminism.

how is frida kahlo a

how is frida kahlo a feminist? lol. i had to do an essay on her in 8th grade, and, seriously, she was WEIRD. i don't get the entire feminist thing. anyway.

Frida the feminist

Her position as a pioneer female artist is part of her legend. Her work was equal to or greater than the work of her husband, Diego Rivera. Frida was also a communist and egalitarian who held the belief that women and men were equals - which was apparent in her stormy marriage. Frida cheated as often as her husband did - with male and female lovers. This is a women who lived in Mexico, in a macho culture IN THE 1930S. I think it's safe to say she was a feminist tho I'm not sure what name Frida would have called it.

Definitely a feminist by nature.

She was for sure... very well said Gina!!! Believing that women and men are equal is definitely the founding thought of feminism. That's what its allll about!

Go here for my view on all things lesbian: http://allthingslesbeau.blogspot.com

Eight years of Bush

I think eight years of the G.W. Bush administration has made "feminism" a scary word. There is nothing wrong with a women who believes she is equal to a man -except maybe she's short-changing herself?:)

It's ADMIRABLE - not silly or bitchy - for a woman to hold the belief that we are equal to men and to react to the many things in our culture that still undermine this idea. Plenty of studies have shown that females are treated differently from the day they start kindergarten. It's our job to be aware of these discrepancies and to change them.

Speaking of Bush...

This is a cool idea, but I know other people who already do things like this. My favorite is the Condie Rice hoodie my friend silkscreened for me. Now she is a feminist if I ever saw one. Or just a lesbian.

The F-Word

The aversion to 'feminism' (in both name and concept) goes way back before Bush, although the last eight years haven't helped. The backlash has pretty much been up and running since the second wave first took hold; and it's not just conservatives/the right wing either -- 'liberals' have frequently proven themselves just as capable of hating women and belittling the cause too.

And for anyone who doesn't 'get' feminism, I think the best definition I've come across is: 'feminism is the radical notion that women are people'.

Anyway ... I like the idea of the clothing line. Although I get the point of the comment above that the 'message' might get lost, it's nonetheless a great opportunity to draw attention to, not just feminism itself, but some of the great women who made what change has occurred possible.

WOW, I just checked back 8

WOW, I just checked back 8 hours later and the Steinem shirt I wanted to buy is gone :(

LOVE these featured women, except I'm not crazy about Angela Davis.

Yay feminism!

Maybe they had a surge of orders because of this post? They'll probably make more. I hope so, cause I have to wait until payday, but I definitely want to order a Simone de Beauvoir hoodie (I'm kind of a nerdy feminist). Would also love either the Steinem/Davis or just Davis t-shirts. It's funny that Gloria Steinem did not know how to make a fist.

Kathleen Hanna

I'm surprised they haven't used a stencil of Kathleen Hanna for their items, I would buy them all :)

Hi to everyone, I'm new here :)

Gina Vivinetto's picture

yes to Hanna--and

Someone should rock a stencil of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, too. Put her in a little bonnet.
