Ellen Page is out, Alison Pill is in for "Jack & Diane"

Right around the time Juno was released, it was well publicized that Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby would co-star in another picture together, Jack & Diane, which followed two teenage girls in love, one who just happened to be a werewolf.

However, they told the press production was delayed because of lack of funding. In the meantime, Page took on several new roles in films like Smart People and the upcoming Whip It!.

So it's bittersweet for me that I can give you this update: Jack & Diane is finally being filmed with a budget for both "special effects and animation." However, Ellen Page has been replaced by Alison Pill.

I don't mean that Alison Pill is a poor choice — she was great as the sole lesbian character in Milk — I'm just a huge Page fan and would have loved to see her play a lesbian. And a werewolf.

Either way, I'm still psyched on the premise of the movie, which screenwriter/director Bradley Rust Gray describes as such:

My focus in making Jack & Diane is to carefully examine what happens when two young people fall in love for the first time. I want to show this love by looking inside the character.

The rest of his director's statement and information about the cast and crew can be found at Gray's website.

The film sounds like it's being made with good intentions and the lesbian relationship won't be gratuitous in any way. And with such great actresses attached, I'm finding it easier to get over the break-up with Ellen Page. I know, she's busy. I guess I'll just have to hold out for lesbian role in the feature film version of Freeheld.

WHAT!?

My heart just broke.  Also, for some reason, Allison looks way older than Olivia.  Maybe it's just that one picture.  But Ellen and Olivia would have been perfect together.  They're already great friends, and they have great chemistry on-screen (i.e. Juno).

That's not true, Allison is

That's not true, Allison is like 22 or 23 years old, now i'm not sure how old Olivia is but that does not count as Allison being way older than Olivia. I'm pretty sure that Ellen page is like 21 years old, not much difference in age with Allison.

balaustine's picture

I Know

I know she's not older, it's just, for some reason, I feel she looks way older than Olivia.  I think I'm still just smarting from the lack of awesome Ellen/Olivia goodness.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!! okay i

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!

okay i suppose it could have been worse, but i have been excited about this movie for a while. at least another substantial female lead was cast and the adorable olivia is still in. i guess its better for her to play a lesbian who made a difference in the world rather than a werewolf ;)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Omg, I always thought Alison Pill reminded me of Ellen Page...BUT Ellen is sooo much better. I'm so disappointed. I was waiting forever to see Jack and Diane to be finished. Now the main reason I wanted to see the film is now not even in the movie. This blows.

I'm having a massive sense

I'm having a massive sense of humor failure about the title of the blog post. Most of us would read it anyway so please don't do give false hope again!

I felt the same way.

I felt the same way. Afterellen.com has always been in the category of (online) magazines that didn't need to use cheap headlines to attract the readers. Please don't change that!

honestly? i've been waiting for this for so long that i think i'd rather pretend they're not making it. ellen and olivia would've been fantastic in this, and although i have nothing against alison, i ... sigh. curse juno, i love the movie but if only she could've just done this one first. i may be a little heartbroken.

vegetarian430's picture

Is Ellen Page out or not?

I really dislike misleading headlines. It does a real disservice to the reader.

Subject line FAIL

Hey! Come on with that misleading headline! My heart stopped for a good ten seconds before I scrolled down and saw what was in the article =(

That being said, I'm happy as a clam that Jack and Diane is going to be made, Ellen Page or no Ellen Page. I think the premise sounds rad, and I can't wait to see it.

Alyssia's picture

im not sad about jack and diane BUTmostly because...

when i read "ellen page is out"  i honestly thought you meant she had "come out". as in i was hoping she admitted that she uh, plays well with girls. sigh...

so sad.

not that the whole J&D thing isnt a bummer too.

finally.

so happy this film is being made!

I actually quite like Alison

I actually quite like Alison Pill. can't say that I'm disappointed. it almost seems like Page has gotten too mainstream to do risque films. Pill, on the other hand, is great. she is excellent in in treatment and has good range.

Alas I was looking very forward to seeing Ellen Page play gay. Maybe she will in something else if we ask nice enough :(

Seriously?

this is a Seriously, Seriously moment with the reaction of people to the title. It shows yet again that people DON't READ further than what they want to believe.

I'm the hugest Ellen Page

I'm the hugest Ellen Page fan ever...but I knew she was never going to do this movie. Hell, I'm surprised the movie even got off at all. I would have just DIED of happiness to see her in this role, but Alison Pill is great so I'm not MAJORLY bummed. I wonder if Alison is a sister...always thought she was a cutie.
katenormal's picture

I'm genuinely gutted.

I'm genuinely gutted.  Lesbian werewolves were going to be the subject of my first novel!  When/if I finally got round to writing it.  Boo for no Ellen Page, though I like the look of her replacement, and Olivia Thirlby is beeeeoooootiful.  Woot for gay werewolves in any permutation.

I always thought George in Being Human was gay, and was always surprised when he had romantic scenes with that (female) nurse.  All became clear when I found out Russell Tovey was gay.  Woot for my gaydar too.

:O

For a second there I actually thought Ellen Page had come out =[.

I can't believe she isn't gonna be in the film though. I might still watch it, But will always be thinking " Thats suppose to be Ellen"
