Ellen DeGeneres won't return to "American Idol," Jennifer Lopez to replace her

Variety is reporting that Ellen DeGeneres has pulled out of judging American Idol, saying she "wasn't comfortable" returning for a second season.

Ellen said:

A couple months ago, I let FOX and the American Idol producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me. I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.

With the exit of Simon Cowell last season, rumors have swirled over who would be next to join the panel of judges. Recent rumblings have included names like Jessica Simpson.

Fox made a statement shortly after Ellen released her own:

We love Ellen and understand and support her decision to bow out of Idol. We were fortunate to receive the humor, energy and love for talent that she brought to the show.

She will certainly be missed, but with several other projects in the works, including her new record label, 11:11 Records, it's not a surprise that Ellen would have to give something up. She added:

I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had, I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.

It seems Ellen prefers to be backing artists she believes in, rather than breaking the spirit of hopefuls. It's likely for the best, as Ellen has always maintained that she's not a fan of negativity and is usually a purveyor of dreaming big and never giving up — which is one of the reasons why we like her so much.

Update 5:45 p.m.

Jennifer Lopez will replace Ellen on the judge's panel. Deadline is reporting:

We hear her manager Benny Medina (whom she once fired) orchestrated the meeting with the American Idol producers a month ago, and negotiations have been ongoing ever since. We've learned a deal was closed earlier this week under the utmost secrecy.

Deadline also says Ellen wanted out two months ago, saying "She's not comfortable. She's not happy. It's not been fun." Apparently Fox Broadcasting's Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice and Alternative TV President Mike Darnell said that "with Cowell leaving, 'We can't let you out now because it would be bad for our franchise. Give us a chance to figure out who we could get."

It seems there hasn't been any ousting of any kind and that Ellen chose to exit the show before JLo signed on. The official announcement is expected from Fox at TCA on Monday.

Now that...

That ladies, is what we call jumping off a sinking ship.
I would bet money that American Idol slumps and gets cancelled not long after Simon leaves.

Good for Ellen though. It's a smart move for her in so, so many ways. :)

Thank Goodness

Ellen was way too good for that show anyway. And if you are saddened by this news, I simply ask you to re-evaluate.

Yeah, I felt

that Ellen was always a bit stiff.  Her uncomfortableness came through too often. I've seen JLo interviews and I think she'll be fun, bring some latina sass to the show.

American Idol, Talent Show Dying

I haven't watched AI since Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson.

AI will be cancelled soon. 10 years on televisio, AI have made big dreams come true but so limited in my opinion.  Take a clue if you're best judges are leaving(no matter what their excuse is for exiting) ummm something is wrong with the show.

Oh well.

Ellen should stick with her daytime talk show so she can rule daytime television even bigger and better than ever.

Ummm...

I know Jenny isn't everyone's cup of tea... but I frickin' LOVE her. You should see my childhood bedroom back at my Mum's house... COVERED in posters of Jen!! She was my childhood idol... and I still really love her.

So, just like I only watched American Idol last year for Ellen, I shall definitely watch this year for Jen!! :D

As for my needy Simon Cowell fix, there is always The X Factor! :]

How sad...

I know this show is "famous" in the US and I'm personally sick of it. This is a new low for Jennifer López. Her career is definitely is danger.

J Lo and Ellen

Is it official that J LO will be Ellen's replacement on Idol? I know there are rumour mills but not really an official statement saying:"Yes, Jennifer Lopez will be the new judge on AI"... as soon as I hear it for real, then I'll believe it... but good for Ellen for leaving Idol. I love her and all but her stint on AI was a waste of her talents, IMHO.

Not a bad move at all...

AI's not obviously Ellen's turf, and she was getting more negative reviews from it than otherwise.

Ellen was never suited for Idol

It was very uncomfortable watching her on that show.  It's gotten to the point where Ellen really needs to step back out of the spotlight because she's getting to be too over exposed.

Completely agree. She wasn't

Completely agree. She wasn't qualified for it anyway. You can be a 'nice' judge but there are plenty of people with way more knowledge and understanding of the music industry and what a good singer sounds like etc than Ellen. To me, it's just another example of celebrities now taking over everything. They are now interviewing eachother (Interview Magazine - Come on - there are plenty of unemployed journalists out there) and the Huffington Post is overflowing with celebrities blogging about 'real issues' like the Gulf etc. I don't want to hear from a celebrity, I want to hear from an expert or at least a journalist.

100 percent agree

I didn't like her comments, neither her jokes. It was frustrating watching her on that show!

Glad Ellen is Moving on from Idol

I thought Ellen would be interesting on American Idol but instead I found her jokes awkward and not appropriate for the show. I also wanted Ellen to give more constructive critiques of the singers but insstead she complimented them on their clothes or hair.  What I wanted from Ellen was honesty regarding the person performing and she didn't do that. After a couple of episodes I realized American Idol was not the right venue for Ellen, where it called for judges to give honest (but not necessarily cruel) critiques. I hope Jennifer Lopez is more honest and direct in critiqueing the performances of the Idol contestants.  Ellen was like Paul Abdul light but with those painful awkward and embarrassing jokes and I found it very hard to watch her.  By the way, I really love Ellen's talk show and watch it every day on TV.

Ellen on American Idol

While I just left a comment on Ellen and the Christian comments saying she "ruined" American Idol and with some idiotic reference to pedophiles in that statement, I have just now read she would not be returning. While I am sad to hear the news, like I had said in my other comment Ellen is a kind person with a warm heart and I see that she had said something to the effect of not wanting to crush young and hopeful talent. To me that's just one more benevolent character trait of hers shining through. And of course understandably so, she is incredibly busy. I just hope it wasn't pressure from radical and extremists that spurred her decision. As for me, I honestly watched the last season just because she was a judge and I love her incredible personality and kind heart. It does me good to see people in her position and influence that truly care about other people. She will be missed. I wish her the best of luck in all other endeavors.
