"Donnie Darko": Part Dos?Whether you loved it and didn’t understand it, or hated it but claim to “get it” all, the film Donnie Darko is undeniably a cult classic. The 2001 indie film starring Jena Malone and both Gyllenhaals focused on the lead character’s existential crisis involving a bunny rabbit and his untimely death. It also featured cameos from Patrick Swayze and Drew Barrymore and had a rocking '80s soundtrack. Why mess with perfection? The director Richard Kelly did not want to — and still doesn’t, which is why he wants no association with the film’s upcoming sequel, S. Darko. The new film stars Daveigh Chase (Big Love), who played Donnie’s young sister, Samatha, in the original film.
She reprises her role alongside other new cast members Ed Westwick (Chuck from Gossip Girl) and Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets). The director is Chris Fisher, whose previous work includes Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders (guess I missed those two at the box office.) The film follows Samantha at age 18 on a road trip to L.A. with a friend when they start to have “bizarre visions” — perhaps the ghosts of Sparkle Motion Past, Present and Future. Filming is slated to begin May 18, and S. Darko will screen at next years’ Cannes Film Festival. The probability of this being bought is most likely very high, but the probability of it being very good? The jury’s still out — it might depend highly on a Swayze appearance. Come on — he did it for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights! Submitted by on May 13, 2008 - 3:53pm. |

Two Words
Oh No
Never met a pearl quite like you that could shimmer and rot at the same time through
One word...
...ditto...
Have they not seen the disasters that were the sequels to the likes of Cruel Intentions and Wild Things, which immediately spring to mind when thinking about a Darko sequel, which confuses me, because Cruel Intentions, Wild Things and Donnie Darko are in three different leagues of movies..? Hmm..?
Well...
it doesn't sound very promising...
Loved Donnie Darko and still do, but I usually don't like sequels.
"ehm...yeah..."
loved the original
Awwww.... shit! Its gonna
Awwww.... shit! Its gonna be nothing like th first. Its gonna be an entirley different movie, Which is a ggod thing, Maybe i'll just pretend it has nothing to do with the first lol.
God helps those, Who help themselves.... In bed.
WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Thirded.... there's no
Thirded.... there's no reason for a sequel and it's hardly a sequel anyway...
Bleh.

Didn't Southland Tales
Southland tales.....
...... Do they never
......
Do they never learn? You don't need to mess with the originals. ARGHH. Did they not see what happened with Star Wars and The Matrix? ARGGH.
I really don't even want to
I really don't even want to reply to this topic cuz.... it really, really upsets me. So... I'll just so NO THANKS! there.

live for lust die for love
this is gonna suck ass -_-
Lock me behind my Cellar Door and throw the key away please...
OK... who comes with me to burn the studios down with everyone involved in this inside??
A sequel to Donnie Darko is like slapping your grandma in the face with a wet sweaty sock.... something that, for many reasons, YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT DO!!!
(*ignorant fuckers*) :-@
* I am the Cinnamon Spider *
XD... Count me in!
Well my grandma's safe 'cause I guess I'll be using my socks to stuff into the tops of the alcohol bottles that we'll be setting fire to and hurling at the studio! ;)
No, but seriously, while I find this completely unacceptable I'm not all that shocked. No hint of originality is safe in Hollywood.

Tore my mind on a jagged sky...
i haven't even seen the
i haven't even seen the movie and i know this is a baaaaaaaad idea.
in other news.....hellooo daveigh. last time i saw her, she was this cute little thing doing the voice for Lilo.
You can Keep That ...
No way....I was late seeing the dark film just a mere few years ago. Loved it. Why, mess with it? I swear folks just don't know leave good films alone especially dark cult indie films. Bekkah see it. It's quite interesting.
I''ll pretend the second won't exist.
uh oh i don't even need
uh oh
i don't even need frank to tell me to flood the studio, plant kiddie p o r n in it, and then burn it to the ground without substantially damaging the 'evidence' of a pwonogwaphy ring
it's all marketing
now that we know there's going to be a sequel, we're all going to watch for the sheer pleasure of imagining how we're going to trash the director's home
How to put this and not
How to put this and not sound redundant...
... please NO?
hell no, i can remember a
hell no, i can remember a little movie sequel called the butterfly effect 2, it frackin stunk and so will this one.
cause the best thing in life is chicks
Mystic Meg
Ok, let me make a prediction... Film is released with terrible reviews, drops out of cinema release after a week and is only ever referenced in lists such as top 10 duds of all time and will always be associated with the sentence " what where they thinking?" I´m not a film producer and yet I can see this coming so why on earth would anyone put up money for a film that is destined to be a turd?
In my travels I discovered the definitive list (apparently) but its open to debate of course...
The 25 Worst Sequels Ever Made
http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,1169126,00.html
here are some examples-
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN (1989)
SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL (1997)
DIRTY DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS (2004)
DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD
REVENGE OF THE NERDS II: NERDS IN PARADISE (1987)
All classics, I think we can agree although I think I would rather watch any of these rather than S. Darko. (imaginative title) I can feel another prediction coming...a new number 1 maybe?
but...really??
I know the film ended up being a hit and Hollywood naturally wants sequels to hits so they can milk the cow, but really? I never predicted that 'Donnie Darko' would have a sequel, I can't think of any similar film that had a sequel, these kinds of films are usually left alone. What they gonna make a sequel to next? Mulholland Drive? Pan's Labyrinth? Irreversible?
Bleh
What everyone else said: Hell no.
I heart Donnie Darko. The idea of a sequal is ridiculous...the plot of the sequal sounds like total crap.
It reminds me of the sequal to Blair Witch Project. It was an entirely different movie.

Who doesn't blog these days?
I think the point of Donnie Darko...
is to leave the viewer wondering EVERY time they watch the movie. I know that, personally, I never watch that film and think I have it figured out. I have a different idea about it every single time.
With that being said, S Darko. Sounds like it would just be a lame horror flick.
This is only going to taint the original.
this looks ugh
This movie is going to suck real bad. I can just see it's rating on imdb.com now.... 3.4 . It will join the ranks of epic movie and step up 2. I don't think this will taint the original as you must believe this is the sequel to have that happen. The original director didn't give the go ahead, therefore this is rubbish and not even related in my book.

um.
shit.
shit. i can't deal with this.
let's not mention this movie ever again.

let's just pretend i said something constructive and intelligent.
???
I really do now see the logic or sense behind this. Although both an amazing movie and a cult classic, it was not that financially successful. Why would anyone want to make a sequel? PS: If you have not seen the directors cut I highly recommend it, it adds even more insight into the movie.
=S
Baad Idea
Patrick Swayze
Isn't Patrick Swayze quite ill (pancreatic cancer, if I remember correctly)? Somehow I doubt he's going to make an appearance on a film that most likely isn't going to be very good when he's got far more serious things to worry about...
