Cherry Bomb: "Gay Marriages"

We want the right to marry just like opposite sex couples, but what do you really get with that piece of paper? You may be surprised how few rights are "equal" when it comes to the current state of gay marriage. This week, the women of Cherry Bomb welcome lawyer Chris Wilson to get the real story.

They discuss the “Vote No on Prop 8” push and what it means to couples nationwide. And in this week’s surprise question: How do you deal with the issue of bringing an interracial baby home to your family?

Woo first comment. I'm so glad I live in Britain. I think it's shocking that in the 21st century we're still having this debate.
eve_jig_it's picture

It is nice that in Britain

It is nice that in Britain the rights in Civil Partnership’s are the same as those in heterosexual Marriage’s…(from what I understand, please correct me if I’m wrong).

I do find it sad though that 'Civil Partnerships' can't just be called Marriage as well. Its like an equal stance, but with one foot placed behind the other.

I have friends adopted in interracial families and they are exactly the same as any other non-mixed race family out there. The differences are not seen as differences but instead enhancements to the entire family dynamic as a whole.

A couple of things.

First, I want to say that Nikki looks really yummy in her outfit. ;)

Second, I so, so, so agree that it's important to be out (obviously when you're ready) and like Nikki said, make it so that people look at your sexuality as a secondary thing instead of walking around with a rainbow flag. It's one thing to be proud but it's also another thing to make your sexuality the biggest part of your life. If people look at gays as people who just so happen to be gay and not just "gay people", it'll make it easier for gays to be more accepted.

Awesome!

I don't know how you ladies manage to put together such good videos each and every week. This one was absolutely riveting as you all asked questions that were spot on to the topic. And the advice you gave for the question of the week made perfect sense (i.e., take your family along with you on the journey of pregnancy and look for family allies). I wish you had more time to talk about gay marriage, though, as it is definitely a timely topic. And if Prop 8 gets defeated here, then hopefully that will start a trend across the country.

By the by, are any of you coming out (so to speak!) to Palm Springs Pride? It's coming up at the end of the month. Also, I think taping a couple of your shows at Dinah next year would be outstanding.

Proposition 8 & Same-Gender Marriages

www.myspace.com/lunakiss7

Ladies you seem to top yourselves every week. I vote this vblog episode on my top 5 fav episode  lists of all the vblogs on AE. This was defintely an important issue to breakdown. I'm very glad you had an attorney to come on as a guest to help us understand the legality of Propsition 8,state and federal laws stance on same-gender marriages across the US. I want to thank you so very much.

Thanks Dalila and Gloria for speaking the truth to the African-American womyn about interracial babies/children and lesbian relationships.

Awww Nikki, I hope your wishes come true about wanting an interracial baby. All babies no matter what race or ethnicities are beautiful.

Worship you all!

Very sad to share a border with such a backwards country

I love my American neighbours, but seriously...  your country boasts about being the land of opportunity etc and something about apple pie, yet equality rights are still being trampled on.  Honestly, it seems so long ago when we passed Bill C-38 The Civil Marriage Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Marriage_Act).  Why is it that it takes so long for the US to hop on the same boat?  If we did a census, I'm sure there are more LGBT people in the US than there is in Canada, yet we are the country that has the rights.

I can only hope for my neighbours that Prop 8 gets shut down, and that it is just one step towards being the 7th country to legalize same-sex marriage ( I was going to say 6th, but apparently Norway is gaining recognition next year!)

P.S.  I volunteer to have Nikki's interracial baby :)

Recently married!

And it's awonderful thing. we were married at our local city hall last week.  SF city hall. Don't let anyone tell you it doesn't make a difference. It has made an incredible difference in our stature, our life as a couple. It's fabulous.   Our lawyer explained that though it is not legal federally, it is a contract executed in CA that calls for what is mine is hers and vce versa..A mile starts with a few steps. We must assure this law remains in tack.

For our young baby dykes everywhere.

Is it just me

I'm not trying to start something...

It almost seems like Nikki wants Gloria's ethnic babies.

LOL when Gloria replies, "ok, we gonna get you one."

Are Nikki and Gloria...

Or is Nikki REALLY affectionate?

It's a little early to be talking about having kids.

Beating gays and getting away since 1969

lol..she got that jungle fever. Niki got that jungle fever haha.

I guess..I was kinda hopin for someone crazy enough to say why is marriage such a big deal with gays. I understand equality is a huge factor, actually the most important factor of this marriage movement, but I guess for me its like commitment is about loving that person for who they are not what they have. Because it seems like thats what we are fighting for, we are fighting to have the right to our partners assests if God forbid they pass away. Because aside from the blenders, cook pots, and wine glasses, thats one of the main benefits like lawyer lady explained, to having your marriage recognized in both state and federal statutes. And also I think we ought to be worried more about pushing efforts to include gay bashing as a hate crime. It would nice to be able to introduce someone you love as your wifey, but what good is that if le wifey is gon' get beat up and raped and have the ahole who did it walk after serving a minimum of 10years depending of course on whether or not its goin to make it to trial, etc..

I believe that both issues are important, but we gotta take a look at which serves a better purpose.

Stand up, take action!

Please, please take action against Prop 8 everyone!  I'm a volunteer lead with my local San Diego headquarters and we're working so hard to keep people coming back in for another shift.  With only 17 days left, we don't have time to recruit new volunteers.  We need everyone on the phonebanks and we need every volunteer to recommit to another shift!

Steve Bing and Equality California has also issued a challenge to all supporters of No On 8 and will match every dollar donated from now until Sunday up to 1 million dollars.

Visit www.NoOnProp8.com to find the closest field office to volunteer or to donate online.  Anything and everything helps, even if it's just one volunteer shift or a $5 donation.  Send me a message if you want some more info.  This Proposition isn't going to defeat itself!

You do not have to live in California to donate, so don't that stop you. Everything counts from now until Nov. 4th.

Seriously.  Who wants to wake up on the 5th and think to themselves, "What if I had just volunteered one more time, or made one more donation?" Seperate but equal is an issue we thought we defeated already, but don't let anything fool you into believing that we have this fight in the bag.  Nov. 4th, I'm going to be clutching the hands of my fellow volunteers who I've been working beside for the last three months until the very last voting booth results come in.

It was on my heart ...

I thought this was an incredibly informative vlog.  Loved it.
I did take note of a few comments that gave me pause.
I know that these comments were innocent. However, I believe that both imply a sense of "Otherness" when it's not necessary.
  • "Mixed babies are stunning and gorgeous and adorable."
In my opinion, the comment above implies that there are a set of characteristics associated particularly with children of mixed heritage.  That's not the case.  It's a stereotype.  And we all know that stereotypes are troublesome.
  • "I wanna little ethnic baby."

Every single one of us belongs to an ethnic group and are ethnic in some way. Nikki belongs to an ethnic group.  Just as I do.  So I don't really get it...

good point

That's such a good point. I've never understood the use of 'ethnic' to describe those who aren't white Americans (or Australians or whatever). As though white people are the standard against which all other races are measured regardless of your point of view. (So I can't call white people "ethnic", because I don't share their racial background, but they can call me ethnic.) It's not a big deal, just wierd - as aksala said, we all belong to an ethnic group. That being said, this vlog rocks! And this isn't a big deal, at least not in this context!
FrozenGrape's picture

This vlog just held such relevance...

This is the first time I've commented on anything on this website although I've been coming here quite a lot and I've watched pretty much every CherryBomb vlog ---

But this one just seemed so important. I'm sure 'Gay Marriage' is important to most people here, but what really got to me was what was said about immigration because I am in one of those long distance relationships. I was an exchange student to the US two years ago and I met my girlfriend there. We've been together for close to 15 months now and even though we're still pretty young --- things like that just cross your mind... Figuring out how and when you can be together (first for visits and then long-term...). I think you start thinking about commitment and what it means a lot sooner.

And the fact that I'm from Germany and that (out of all the countries in the world) Tatum just mentioned that one --- It was just incredible!

-----

And while I'm at it (at commenting, I mean) I just wanted to thank the CherryBomb ladies for their effort and time. For their insight, eloquence and for their loveliness. It is much appreciated : )

AMAZING!

Wow it was THE most relatable Vlog for me yet! I love Cherry Bomb and never miss an episode!

I have the privilage of living in Canada, where it same sex marriage is legal, and that law is from our federal government.  There is at least one province that on a provincial level does not recognize gay marriage, but the fact that the rest of the country does is down right amazing.

I excercised my legal right this summer and got married, it was a beautiful backyard wedding in my parents yard, with both sides of our family present. There were about 80 guests there to witness and celebrate in our marriage, I wore the $1000 dollar white gown, there was a wedding cake, I tossed the bouquet, we had a big dinner and dance the whole show. It was the wedding I had dreamed about since I was a little girl. I felt so privilaged to be able to marry the woman I love and have my dream wedding without even having to think twice about it! I wish so much for Americans that one day they too can have this privilaged, that won't even thought twice about, because well duh you want to committ for life, you go and get married just like any one else.. because we are anybody else.

I still do not feel that gay marriage is is safe in Canada.  Our conservative government would love to turn that law back, but thankful are currently a minority government and do not have the power to do so right at this moment. But it is unnerving to know that there is a possibilty of having my civil right that I am entitled to taken away.  So I will continue to fight the battle with you all.

I also loved the question of the week, as I am in a same sex interacial marriage. I am caucasian and my wife is Phillipino.  We do plan on having children, and thankfully we are legally married and so our children will be legally both of ours and we will not have to go through the ridiculouness of adopting our own child.  We are both planning on having a child, and we are hoping to use the same donor for both children so that we are all that more connected, our children will be truly blood related.  And just to throw another side of otherness into the mix, the donor that we are looking at having is an interracial child himself, His mother is from Barbados and His father from Hungry.  So we will be a very Canadian family!!

Did you all get a new make up artist this week?? Because you all were looking even hotter than usual, who knew that was even possible??!! And Nikki, your breasts peaking out of that top that fit you so perfectly were very distacting.. looking HOT!

Keep up the good work on the show! Love IT!

Also thanks to the guest, it was very interesting insight!

Interracial Children: A Topic That Should Be Explored

One of the things I love about Cherry Bomb (besides the concentrated hotness) is the realness of both Dalila and Gloria when it comes to expressing an African-American point of view.  Anyone who's ever been to a black family reunion could relate to everything you two said.

Being mulatto myself, I am a bit worried about this wave of white people wanting "ethnic" babies, especially if their plan is to live in an all-white enclave where their children will be tokens.  For me, if it wasn't for my father and my black family, I would have never been given the social, cultural or political tools to navigate in a racist country.

It would be great if you all expanded the topic to a whole show.  Just a thought.

lesbian moms pick donors

lesbian moms pick donors based on criteria that doesn't necessarily begin with skin color. The number of donors available at specific cryobanks along with how they match the egg donors health screening and genetic predisposition for certin illness factor in as well. Is he CMV negative or positive? What's his Rh factor? Some white women CANNOT carry a baby fullterm with a white donors sperm [genetic flaw],so they choose a donor of color to over come that obstacle. And yep there are those who have been tomented for years with too fair a skin who choose dnors of color also. There are many reasons so it's best to not assume we know why.Isn't it great that we get to choose. Even doctorates donor programs!

The only thing I wish is that when those who don't have kinky hair choose to have children that "do" that they would invest the time in educating themselves on the care and up keep of said kinky[nappy] hair, instead of letting it sprout up out of the childs head until it looks like a big dry tumbleweed easily set a flame by a stray cigarette. There isn't a black hair stylist out there that wouldn't teach someone who wants to learn how to comb babygirls hair!

and the argument that black identified kids suffer an identity problem being raised in a ll white world isn't all that true. Ask gloria or myself.Heetee

The importance of gay marriage

The property rights and estate issues drive me most insane. I know that if it was up to my family they wouldn't respect my wishes to leave everything to a partner. To say nothing of the fact that after I work for all the years it takes to build a pension and then I can't say what happens to it when I pass.

More cheers for the ladies this week. I can't tell you how much I wish that these women were in my friend circle. I would love to be on that couch for the conversation. And for the wine. And for Dalila. Mostly for Dalila.

I feel a but naive bit

I feel a bit naive but how does this work for a trans couple maybe like if theres a trans husband and a woman wife... do they get the same rights as a  traditional hetero couple? I think its such a silly question... To truly believe that because I love another girl I shouldn't be able to enjoy all the ups and downs of marriage without worrying about my future or my wife's future for that matter God forbid if something happened to me or her, like it just doesn't make any sense.  I don't live in cali anymore but my mom does and she just told me she has yes on 8 signs all in her yard, and I just feel so heartbroken to hear that from her

Viana Says:

Smile ;)'s picture

In Australia - if a Trans

In Australia - if a Trans person has not officially changed their gender legally, (on identity documents) then they will by considered by law to be the gender that was assigned to them at birth. And thus if an Male to female trans person wants to marry a woman that couple will have the same rights as a opposite sexed couple.

I am not sure what happens if an opposite sexed couple marries and then one member of the couple changes gender I don't think that the marriage would be nullified it might be a loop hole...

Trans and gender-queer issues are very complicated legally because gender is one of the major discriminators in our society. Basically the reason we can't marry who we want is due to the gender we were assigned at birth and the ramifications and social expectations that gender assignment has on a person. From that one assignment we are supposted to be attracted to certain people, have particular interests and even dress in a particular way.

KFDsbitch's picture

actually I've read a few

actually I've read a few articles about this(I live in OZ too) and I'm pretty sure that because gay marriage isn't legal here if a member of an opposite sex marriage does change their gender they are considered no longer married...which I think is really sad because people who have been married for years are suddenly unmarried just because one of them changes gender

interracial baby

What is needed in bringing home an interracial baby to a home is the same thing that needs to be in every home to which a child is brought into. It needs to be filled with love! This is the exact thing that ANY baby needs in ANY home that they are brought home to. It does not matter that both parents are of the same sex or are a more traditional male and female variety. The child needs to be loved. I personally think that it should be a crime that everyone cannot marry the person that they want to no matter who that person is (or what sex that they are). Just like any crime against anyone just because they are different (ie: gays, other religions, other colors, etc) should automatically be classified as hate crimes.

Very Informative

Thanks ladies! This has been a very informative vlog.

I never knew that even if the state legalizes gay marriage that they still don't get federal benefits. It makes me pretty sad to hear these kinds of things because I feel like we are still sooo far behind from where we need to be. But any progress is still progress.

But this whole prop 8 thing just gets me so angry. I just can't understand why people think its okay to deny rights to people. And worse yet lets let peoples rights be decided by popular vote? Come the eff on. Its just nuts. This country really needs to take a serious look at itself and realize that its not what it claims to be.

But on a lighter note... Nikki, I definitley wouldnt be opposed to giving you some little hispanic babies. Eh, eh? lol.

Prop. 2 in FL

Prop. 2 states "Florida Marriage Protection Ammendment"

This ammendment protects marriage as the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife and provides that no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.

The direct financial impact this ammendment will have on state and local government revenues and expenditures cannot be determined, but is expected to be minor.

They not only want to deny a gay marriage, but to never have to let a gay couple think that they even ARE A COUPLE!

the_Rad_Seed's picture

its so bs and unconstitutional

im not even out 2 my friends but ive made my facebook staus anti-amend 2 twice already.

the language of it denies all rights and recognition of even a civil union, and thats what dangerous. no legal, health or insurance benefits even? thats scary. as its been said, it would be the first amandement to ever take away rights.

The good news is the polls dont show it passing as of last week like 58% in favor, forty sum % against with some not sure, but not the 2/3rd majority needed to pass it. Both sides are taking that as the cue to step up though.
