News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Celesbians come out for the 2009 GLAAD Awards in NYC

Last night in New York City, celebrities gathered to celebrate the 20th annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards. Several lesbians were honored as part of the ceremony.

Suze Orman with T.R. Knight

The lesbian financial guru was recognized with the Vito Russo Award, which is presented to "an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community."

In her acceptance speech, Orman said she wants the LGBT community to take note of the corporations that put their "time and money" behind us:
Do you want to continue to give your money to people in corporations that oppress us, that keep us down? Or do you want to give your money to the corporations who can help us rise and change what needs to be changed in the United States of America today. I ask you to honor those corporations not only with your support but with your money as well. We can do this — and here's how you're going to do it. You are going to think about every single penny you spend from this day forward. And the only think I ask of you is to spend it and invest it in those companies that invest in you.

Giving Awards

just for not totally hating us.

I don't know why I'm cynical about these awards....it always seems like 1/2-3/4 are scraping the bottom of a barrel. I wish they'd forget the whole nomination and category process and just give awards to people who do something worthy of getting an award.

Noteworthy

Shelter and Noah's Arc tying for best limited release film over The Edge of Heaven which proves that when it comes down to it they will always award something mediocre with gay male content over something outstanding with lesbian content.  Least they could have done is given that award to XXY, a beautiful movie about a hermaphrodite.  Just the way GLAAD rolls to go for insipid over the brilliant because it has gay male characters.  That also means since 2001, 14 of 17 film winners (limited and wide release combined) have been for movies where the GLBT presence was gay male/bisexual male characters, 2 movies where the GLBT presence was lesbians/bisexual women, and one movie with a trans character.

Can't wait for television to roll around.  We'll skip comedy's 8 in a row streak of shows with gay male characters winning since that is hardly GLAAD's fault that there have been few comedies with lesbian/bi female characters.  However, since 2001 the drama winner has gone once to a drama about lesbians once and 7 times to a drama with gay men.  This is despite the presence of such landmarks as Once and Again and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Again that is how GLAAD rolls.

just goes to show that

just goes to show that discrimination against/contempt for women seems to cut across just about every demographic group. i thank god that i'm a lesbian sometimes, because it seems like finding a man who truly respects women as his equal is pretty much impossible.
